Kansas City’s hopes for a third consecutive Super Bowl victory were all but dashed by a powerful first half by Philadelphia Sunday at the Superdome in New Orleans, as the NFC champion Eagles routed the AFC champion Chiefs 40-22 in SB LIX.
Jalen Hurts was selected as the game’s most valuable player. Hurts was 17 of 22 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 72 yards on 11 carries – a Super Bowl record for a quarterback – and a rushing touchdown.
Hurts became the first quarterback to win a Super Bowl after losing one since Bob Griese won with Miami in 1972. DeVonta Smith was his primary target with four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 21 of 32 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns, but was also sacked six times. Mahomes was also Kansas City’s leading rusher with 25 yards on four attempts. Xavier Worthy caught eight passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.
This was Philadelphia’s second Super Bowl victory, the first was in 2017. The Eagles lost in 2022, 2004 and 1980. In the pre-Super Bowl era, the Eagles won NFL titles in 1948, 1949 and 1960. The Chiefs won AFL championships in 1962 (as Dallas Texans), 1966 and 1969. Kansas City won Super Bowls in 1969, 2019, 2022 and 2023, losing in 2020.
The Eagles built a 24-0 halftime lead on Hurts’ 1-yard TD run, Jake Elliott’s 48-yard field goal, Cooper DeJean’s 38-yard pick-six, and A.J. Brown’s 12-yard scoring pass from Hurts.
Philadelphia extended its lead in the third quarter to 34-0 on Elliott’s 29-yard field goal, and a 48-yard scoring strike from Hurts to Smith. Kansas City got on the board with 34 seconds left in the quarter on Worthy’s 24-yard TD pas from Mahomes.
The Eagles used two ore Elliott field goals of 43 and 50 yards to build a 40-6 lead. Kansas City found the end zone twice in the last three minutes on touchdown passes from Mahomes to DeAndre Hopkins and Worthy.
Records set in Super Bowl LIX besides Hurts’ QB rushing: Elliott kicked four field goals and four extra points for 16 kicking points, his four field goals ties a record held by three others.
The average ticket to watch in person was $7,300 (fees included) according to Stubhub. Ticketmaster had seats listed for $6,600.
Kendrick Lamar provided the halftime entertainment with a guest appearance by dancer and tennis champion Serena Williams. Jon Batiste sang the National Anthem and Lauren Diagle performed “America The Beautiful.”
Donald Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. He predicted a Chiefs victory.
