Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal take good adrenaline into Saturday’s game with Oregon State

AP photo: Stanford Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey goes full bore from the field for his second touchdown against the Arizona Wildcats in the second quarter last Saturday night

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey was absolutely fantastic on Saturday he ran for 169 yards rushing and had 225 all purpose yards then he also had a kick off and punt return called back because of a holding penalty. He was on his game and you could see that the injury might have slowed him down. The Cardinal made some changes on the offense and it paid off for them and it was a very important game.

Stanford has the potential to run the table in the next four games and become bowl eligible. Stanford has Oregon State (home), at Oregon, at Cal, and Rice at home. Stanford running back Bryce Love also rushed for 178 yards so they had a good one two punch in the Wild Cat game. It’s a good win coming into the game with Oregon State this Saturday.

NCAA Podcast with Daniel Dullum: Chryst stepping into the starting role with a win; McCaffrey shines with new QB

AP photo: Stanford Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey plows into the end zone for a touchdown on Saturday against the Arizona Wild Cats in the third quarter at Tucson AZ

Stanford Cardinal (5-3) running back Christian McCaffrey had himself a day last Saturday against the Arizona Wild Cats with three touchdowns. McCaffrey ran for 169 yards roughly three yards shy of his personal best for this season. McCaffrey certainly had a great first half where he rushed 100 of those yards. Quarterback Keller Chryst Stanford’s new starter threw for 14-30 passes 104 yards and two touchdowns. Daniel says he could work his way to keeping the starting role.

The Oregon State Beavers (2-6) at Stanford Stadium although the Beavers have struggled this season they do have an offense that can execute and have been in a number of high scoring games. With a lot of offense the Cardinal will have to step up their defense this Saturday.

The University of Arizona had slim hopes of qualifying for a bowl game going into Saturday’s game against Stanford, and the Cardinal dimmed those hopes even more with a 34-10 Pac-12 football win at Arizona Stadium in Tucson.

Christian McCaffrey scored three of the Stanford touchdowns, helping the Cardinal snap a three-game conference losing streak. McCaffrey gained 169 rushing yards, three shy of his personal best for the season. The 2015 Heisman runnerup had 100 rushing yards by halftime.

The 34 points represent a season-high for Stanford (5-3 overall, 3-3 Pac-12), while 10 points are a season-low for the Wildcats.

Arizona (2-6 overall, 0-5 Pac-12) is the last team looking for its first conference win. The Wildcats suffered their fifth straight loss and must run the table on their remaining four games to have a chance for even a lower-tier bowl game.

Emblematic of Arizona’s offensive woes was the performance of quarterback Brandon Dawkins, who finished 5 of 15 for 116 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also gained 65 rushing yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, McCaffrey put Stanford ahead with a 45-yard TD run just 39 seconds into the second quarter. McCaffrey’s second touchdown came on an 18-yard pass from Keller Chryst, who was making his first start for the Cardinal.

A 38-yard touchdown pass from Dawkins to Trey Griffey cut the Arizona deficit to 14-7. The Wildcats seemed to be building momentum when Dane Cruikshank picked off a Chryst pass, but on the return, a hit by Stanford lineman Nate Herbig forced a fumble. Chris Harrell recovered for the Cardinal, leading to a 45-yard field goal by , making it 17-7 at the half.

Stanford extended its lead to 20-7 on a field goal, and Mike Tyler’s fumble recovery at the Arizona 23-yard line set up McCaffrey’s third score to make it 27-7.

Chryst completed 14 of 30 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Next week, the Cardinal return home to host Oregon State with a chance to become bowl eligible.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Matt Harrington: Burns played his way out of a job now Cardinal will take a look at Chryst

AP file photo: Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst (10) gets the call to start against the Arizona Sun Devils Saturday is seen here throwing against Notre Dame Sat Oct 15

Stanford (4-3) plays at Arizona (2-5) it was written all over Stanford head coach David Shaw’s face the Cardinal after loosing 10-5 Colorado last week needs to get back on track with some offense. The Cardinal are not in the hunt for that big bowl now but they definitely want to see some players for the future that can produce for the rest of the season. Stanford quarterback Ryan Burns has been replaced for new starter Keller Chryst. What will the switch mean for Chryst as the new starter Matt will take you through that change.

Also a look at the struggles of quarterback Ryan Burns performance or lack of it last week against Colorado at Stanford led to his loosing his job. Also there were games before last week’s game against Colorado that led to Burns loosing his job. The best game that Burns had in recent weeks was against Notre Dame but that was a come back game of sorts.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Despite loss the Cardinal held a high scoring Colorado to just ten points and forced them to miss three FGs

USA Today photo: Colorado Buffaloes defensive back Isaiah Oliver (26) intercepts the ball in front of Stanford Cardinal wide receiver Michael Rector (3) during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game at Stanford Stadium

The Stanford Cardinal defense was very good, extremely good and held the Colorado Buffaloes to a touchdown and a field goal. They held a very high scoring team to just ten points. Colorado has been averaging 39 points a game coming into Stanford last Saturday. The Buffaloes could have put more points on the board they were in the red zone three times and they couldn’t score and they set up three field goals and missed all three. The Buffaloes offense was misfiring but it also could have been Stanford’s defense playing pretty well.

Anytime you hold a team to ten points you should expect to win but Stanford’s offense on the other hand was to put it mildly pathetic. For Stanford quarterback Ryan Burns he had a very difficult day he threw three interceptions and he fumbled the ball. You can’t have four turnovers to win. Burns did not play well. The Cardinal will try it again as they are at Arizona to face the Sun Devils on Saturday Oct 29th.

Stanford Cardinal-Colorado Buffaloes game wrap: Both Cardinal-Buffalo defenses bottled up the end zones for low scoring win for Colorado 10-5

by London Marq

AP photo: Colorado’s Shay Fields crosses the goal line for the Buffaloes only touchdown which would be enough eludes Stanford defender Dallas Lloyd (29) during the first half of Saturday’s game at Stanford Stadium

PALO ALTO–The Colorado Buffaloes visit Palo Alto to take on The Stanford Cardinal in a game that would be an offensive struggle for both teams. Stanford scored a field goal in the first, but a slew of turnovers and penalties hindered their ability to get into the end zone for the rest of the game. But Colorado’s inability to score from the red zone kept this game close throughout.

Stanford QB Ryan Burns was a subpar 16 for 29 with 170 yards and 3 interceptions. The final interception coming at the end of the 4th, sealing the win for Colorado 10-5. After that final interception was thrown a disappointed Christian McCaffrey walked to the sideline, looking downfield at what could have been. The star running back fought and scrapped for every yard he could muster, but to no avail. He ended with 92 yards on 21 carries and no touchdowns.

The lone touchdown of the day came in the second quarter on a 15 yard touchdown pass caught by Colorado’s Shay Fields. Fields had four catches for 51 yards. Though the offensive standout for this game was Phillip Lindsay, who averaged over ten yards per rushing attempt. Lindsay kept the chains moving for Colorado with 131 yards on just 12 carries.

Colorado walks away from this game with the win, but in reality it should have been by a larger margin. Three times they entered the red zone and failed to score, missing three field goals. Give credit to the defenses on both teams who kept this games playmakers bottled up and out of the end zone.

Final: Colorado def. Stanford 10 – 5

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Matt Harrington: Colorado has scored on some very tough defensive teams this season; For Stanford the name of the game is defense

USA Today file photo: Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst (10) looks to find an open receiver against Notre Dame last week will need to find them again against a tough Colorado Buffaloes team

The Stanford Cardinal (4-2) gained a lot of confidence picking up that win last Saturday at Notre Dame and moving back into the win column. The Cardinal who host the Colorado Buffaloes (5-2) will  be playing more than likely from an defensive effort rather than an offensive effort. The Buffaloes have scored some on teams with some of the toughest defense in the NCAA. While the Cardinal held the Buffaloes to a touchdown in the first half trailing 7-3 they still need their offense to show up.

The Buffaloes went to the air and still were able to score 30 on Michigan this season and a couple of other Pac 12 teams who play defensively and they still are able to get points against them. It’s going to be tough for Stanford to plan their points off the Buffaloes offensively. So the Cardinal are going to have to have their defense do it and hold Colorado down.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal prepare for Colorado at home this Saturday; Notre Dame coach is in a twisty bunch with a number of coaches and players

AP file photo: Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has been frustrated with his team’s play and with Stanford conditioning coach David Grimes, as his expression says it all in this Sep 24th photo as the Fighting Irish were playing the Duke Blue Devils which Kelly and the Irish lost

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry:

The Cardinal need to keep things going to right the ship coming off their victory 17-10 against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. For the Irish there are a lot of complaints coming out of South Bend regarding their head coach Brian Kelly as the Irish fall to 2-5. Kelly also got into a exchange of words with Stanford conditioning coach David Grimes after both teams were meeting on the field after the game on Saturday. Grimes was Notre Dame’s conditioning coach and Kelly shoved Grimes during a game at the time Grimes was coaching at Notre Dame. Fast forward to last Saturday  Grimes had said “bye bye” to Kelly while walking by after the game and the two had an exchange of words.

Both Grimes and Kelly had to be separated during the shoving spat back when Grimes was at Notre Dame. Kelly has been putting the blame for the team’s loses on other people other than himself and he’s been one of the most talked about troubled coaches in the NCAA.

Meanwhile the Cardinal prepare for the Colorado Buffaloes for this Saturday at Stanford Stadium.

Cardinal come from behind, hold on to beat Irish 17-10; Stanford snaps two game skid

In bad need of a win, Stanford traveled to South Bend, Ind., Saturday and emerged with a 17-10 come-from-behind non-conference football victory over Notre Dame.

The Cardinal won on the road despite not having Heisman Trophy candidate Christian McCaffrey in the lineup. The junior running back suffered what is described as an “undisclosed” injury in the second half of last week’s loss to Washington State. His playing status was undecided up until hours before kickoff, and there’s no immediate word about his availability for next week.

Filling in for McCaffrey was sophomore Bryce Love, who gained 129 yards on 23 carries, as the Cardinal improved to 4-2 overall.

The Fighting Irish (2-5) took a 10-0 lead into halftime on an 8-yard touchdown run by quarterback DeShone Kizer with 1:57 left in the first quarter, and a second-quarter field goal of 29 yards by Justin Yoon.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, this is the third consecutive game in which the Cardinal was held scoreless in the first quarter while scoring six total points in the first half of their previous three games.

Stanford roared back nearly two minutes into the second half, when Quenton Meeks returned a Kizer pass 50 yards on a pick-6. With 1:17 left in the third quarter, the Cardinal defense trapped a Notre Dame running back in the end zone for a safety, pulling the Cardinal to within 10-9.

Kizer was Notre Dame’s leading rusher (83 yards on 11 carries) before leaving the game early in the third quarter in favor of backup Malik Zaire. Kizer, who returned later, also completed 14 of 26 passes for 154 yards and was picked off twice.

The Cardinal took the lead with 10:38 remaining in the fourth quarter when Fighting Irish linebacker James Onwualu forced a Love fumble after running six yards. Center Jesse Burkett recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a Stanford touchdown, and Love ran in a 2-point conversion.

Notre Dame had the ball in the closing seconds with an opportunity to tie the game. But Kizer was unable to execute a pass on fourth-and-10 from the Stanford 14. As Kizer was about to be sacked, he pitched the ball to lineman Quentin Nelson, the ball was ruled dead, and Stanford escaped with its fourth win of the season.

Next week, the Cardinal return to Pac-12 action at home against Colorado. Stanford has a five-game winning streak against the Buffs.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Matt Harrington: With McCaffrey hurt, Burns trying to get on track the Cardinal really need this one against Notre Dame

AP photo: Stanford tight end Dalton Schultz celebrates after recovering a fumble which Schultz ran in for a touchdown in the second half against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at South Bend Ind Saturday

On the podcast with Matt:

The Stanford Cardinal go back on the road after last week’s tough loss at home to Washington State 42-16. The Cardinal are on a two game losing streak they dropped a game the week before to Washington 44-6 and Matt will take a look how the Cardinal should fare at Notre Dame. Stanford head coach David Shaw said the team was a work in progress and they need to improve on both sides of the ball.

Stanford quarterback Ryan Burns threw 20-30 for 233 yards those numbers were inflated because the Cougars were throwing a lot on offense and the Cardinal were trying to move the ball on offense to get on the board as well. Matt takes his pick for this Stanford-Notre Dame match up.
