STANFORD–Weber State took a trip to Silicon Valley to take on Stanford in front of a raucous crowd at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal made sure it was it wasn’t a very productive trip, playing an aggressive brand of basketball and holding the usual deadly Wildcats to a humbling 30% from the floor.

The Wildcats had good ball movement all game, often finding the open man. They were unable to capitalize and finish their possessions with a basket. Through the first half, Weber State shot a dismal 37% from the floor, and 1-11 from beyond the arc (9%).

The Cardinal deserve all of the credit playing excellent defense, closing the space on the dangerous Weber State shooters and altering shots. Stanford took the lion share of the boards, out rebounding the Wildcats 43-25. Star forward Reid Travis led the way with 15 rebounds, including 3 on the offensive side of the court. He also led all scorers with 22 points.

With this impressive win over Weber State, Head Coach Jerod Haase gets his second win in his first season as head coach. They controlled this game throughout with tough defense and a stout presence in the paint. If this game is any indication of the rest of the season, Stanford may very well be accepting invitations later this season.

Final:

Stanford 67- Weber State 49

PALO ALTO- The Stanford Cardinal Men’s basketball team, showing no ill effects from the long trip home from Shanghai, routed the CSUN Matadors 96-69. Coach Jerod Haase, in his first season as head coach of the Cardinal, had his team playing aggressively. They played well on defense and ran the court at every opportunity. Most of last year’s team returned, and they showed how well a team could play with experience under their collective belts. Michael Humphrey and Reid Travis started at forward. Dorian Pickens, Christian Sanders and Marcus Allen, all guards, were in the starting lineup. The Matadors, coached by former NBA star, Reggie Theus, were no match for the Cardinal Tuesday night.

The Cardinal was playing the second game and the first game at home this season raced out to a thirteen-point advantage at the end of the first half. The visiting Cal State University Northridge Matadors jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. The Cardinal tied the game at seven with 16:24 left in the half. With the score 10-9 for Stanford, the Cardinal went on a 19-5 run to take a 29-14 lead. Reid Travis led the Cardinal with fifteen points. Marcus Allen and Dorian Pickens each had eight for theCardinal. The Matadors closed the gap to thirteen at the end of the half.  Kendall Smith led the Matador attack with thirteen. Dylan Johns added six for CSUN. CSUN shot just 37% from the floor while Stanford’s was at 41%. The Cardinal led 22-18 in rebounds, and they played great defense in the half. The Cardinal leads 47-34 after twenty minutes of play.

The rout was on at the start of the second half. Dorian Pickens started the half with two 3-point shots. Reid Travis scored a bucket to give the Cardinal a twenty-one point lead. Josh Sharma, the 7-foot center, and Marcus Sheffield were terrific in the half. Sharma ended the game with fifteen, and Sheffield added seventeen. The guys in Cardinal and White could not be caught. The Matadors trailed by thirty-one 85-54 and were done for the game. Stanford improves to 2-0 while the Matadors drop to 1-2.

Game Notes- After the game Reid Travis, who had nineteen in the contest, said the team “stayed aggressive.” Dorian Pickens had a short answer when asked about how well the team moved the ball. His reply was “great.”

Coach Jarod Haase said he “had a blast” watching his team run to a win. He said this about his players:”they are so willing to learn.” When asked what he liked and didn’t like about the game, Haase remarked:” I didn’t like the ebb and flow of the game.” However,”I liked the way we shared the ball.”

The Cardinal play Weber State at Maples Pavilion at 7 pm Thursday night.  They finish the homestand Sunday against the Colorado State Rams at 3 pm.

Attendance was a pitiful 2801.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: McCaffrey racking up yards and TDs should do some damage in the Big Game Saturday

AP photo: Stanford Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey (5) bursting for more yardage against the Oregon Ducks last Saturday at Autzen Stadium

You have to remember Stanford Cardinal running back Christian McCaffrey missed three games and he ranks tenth nationally and is second in all purpose yards with 193.22 he’s trailing the Oklahoma Cornhuskers running back Joe Mixon with 193.89 razor close. McCaffrey virtually could lead the country in all purpose yards and he still missed three games that unbelievable.

The Cardinal offensive line jelled particularly in the Oregon game McCaffrey in the running game had a 61 yard carry for a touchdown. McCaffrey is just phenomenal showing everyone why he should have been the Heisman Trophy Award winner last season.

Keller Chryst continues to improve as Stanford’s starting quarterback.

Chryst, who took over as the signal caller three games ago, tossed three touchdown passes for Stanford as the Cardinal routed Oregon 52-27 in Pac-12 football at Eugene, Ore.

The Cardinal (7-3 overall, 5-3 Pac-12) are 3-0 with Christ at the helm. The junior QB was 19 of 26 for 258 yards and didn’t throw an interception.

Heisman candidate Christian McCaffrey ran for 135 yards and scored three touchdowns for Stanford. McCaffrey’s 61-yard TD gave the Cardinal an early lead. After a Ducks fumble, McCaffrey scored on a 5-yard fun, and he had a 14-yard TD run in the first half.

Going into the game, McCaffrey needed only 20 rushing yards to reach the 1,000-yard plateau for the second straight season McCaffrey also caught five passes for 52 yards.

Bryce Love added 82 rushing yards on five carries for Stanford, with Cameron Scarlett running for 68 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

JJ Arcega-Whiteside caught four passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. Michael Rector and Dalton Schultz also caught four passes for Stanford.

Defensive leaders for Stanford were Joey Alfieri with two interceptions, and safety Justin Reid made 10 solo tackles.

Oregon (3-7 overall, 1-6 Pac-12) is assured of a losing season for the first time since 2004. The loss also all but knocked the Ducks out of contention for any bowl game with two games remaining,

One bright spot for the Ducks was the 111-yard effort from Royce Freeman. He also scored a touchdown.

It was the first time since 2008 that the two school met without either being ranked.

Next week, the Cardinal visit California in Berkeley for the Big Game. In two weeks, Stanford finishes the regular season by hosting Rice.

Stanford Cardinal football podcast with Matt Harrington: Cardinal could take struggling Ducks at Corvallis

AP photo: The Oregon Ducks running back Royce Freeman takes a carry against the Stanford Cardinal at Autzen Stadium in Corvallis on Saturday

The win last week over the Oregon State Beavers was a good win for Stanford it wasn’t a perfect game but it was an important win for them and they were playing a team that they knew they had to beat. If you start to look at the individual performances they weren’t quite where you wanted them to be especially with Keller Chryst at the quarterback position with 50 percent completions and only 60 yards.

It was a good win over Oregon State but it wasn’t the kind that makes you beam with confidence but it was a win where they could string a couple wins together and start moving closer and closer to the .500 mark. The game coming up against the Oregon Ducks is important because they have a battle for the Pac 12 powerhouses as we look at the Ducks who appear to be struggling.

Stanford opens Haase era with win in Shanghai

AP file photo: Jerod Haase has a few words with official during UAB-UTEP game last season when he coached at UAB now the Stanford coach picked up his first win in Shanghai in the Stanford Cardinal opener against Harvard on Friday

By Jeremy Harness

It wasn’t pretty at times, but when the clock struck zero, Jerod Haase was 1-0 as Stanford’s new head coach.

The Cardinal went across the Pacific to take part in the Pac-12 China game to open the 2016-17 season and grinded out a 80-70 win over Harvard in Shanghai, China Friday night.

Reid Travis led the way for Stanford by being a real force inside, scoring 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting and grabbing 17 rebounds.

The only drawback to Travis’ game is that he was only 10-for-19 from the free-throw line, but then again, he has struggled mightily from the line during his college career, as he has shot less than 50 percent from the line.

Michael Humphrey was not very far behind him, as he scored 15 points while making five of his eight shots from the field to go along with four rebounds.

In addition, even though it did not show up entirely on the stat sheet, the Cardinal got solid play from both of their point guards. Starter Christian Sanders only scored one point, but he also handed out five assists and only turned the ball over once.

His backup, Robert Cartwright, made a triumphant return to the court on Friday after suffering a compound fracture of his right arm in practice toward the end of last season. He added five points to go along with three assists, including a beautiful feed to Grant Verhoeven off of penetration for an easy layup.

Bryce Aiken led Harvard with 21 points, but he made only five of his 15 shots to do it. Meanwhile, Siyani Chambers followed with 12 points on 3-of-7 shooting to go along with four assists and three rebounds.

Stanford squeaks by in a snoozer 26-15

By Jeremy Harness

AP photo: Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst takes a keeper for 44 yards in the third quarter to the Oregon four against the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday at Stanford Stadium

STANFORD – The game was not pretty by any stretch of the imagination, but at least Stanford is back to their familiar winning ways.

After dropping three in a four-game stretch, the Cardinal got things back on track in a dominant win over a struggling Arizona team last weekend and then kept things moving in the right direction in a 26-15 win over Oregon State Saturday afternoon to make themselves eligible to play in a bowl game.

Now here comes the bad news.

The recent losing skid seemed to have had a significant impact on fan interest. The official attendance at Stanford Stadium on Saturday was 38,813, but the half-empty appearance made that statistic extremely hard to believe.

Meanwhile, this game was marred by bad quarterback play from both schools, which was marked by missed receivers, botched snaps and interceptions

Keller Chryst, the Palo Alto High grad who took over the starting job from an equally-underperforming Ryan Burns, completed 10 of his 17 passes for only 60 yards, and he also botched three snaps – one of which was lost deep in Stanford territory – and made several bad decisions with the ball and simply took too much time to throw.

“Keller continues to grow,” head coach David Shaw said. “(He did) some good things, some not so good things. In a game like this where we score enough to win, win by two scores. You look up, could have had two more touchdown passes. (He’s) just got to connect on those.”

His quarterbacking counterpart, Oregon State’s Marcus McMaryion was not much better, even though he did throw a 75-yard touchdown pass in the first half. He threw for 137 yards on 10-of-24 passing, and he was also intercepted twice and just could not get his offense moving nearly enough.

Oh, and one more thing: When also factoring in questionable play-calling on both sides, it made this contest particularly difficult to watch.

Stanford’s day started with a comedy of errors, but with a combination of tighter defense and the fact that they were playing a bad OSU team, they got away with it.

Despite a lost fumble on a botched snap at their own 33-yard line and a pass-interference penalty on cornerback Quenton Meeks in the end zone, the Cardinal dodged a huge bullet when their defense stiffened up and watched as kicker Garrett Owens missed a 26-yard field goal.

Stanford then marched down the field and got within striking distance, but the drive eventually stalled, thanks in much part to Chryst missing a wide-open J.J Arcega-Whiteside at the Beavers’ 15-yard line that would have given the Cardinal a first down. However, Conrad Ukropina then tied a career-long with a 52-yard field goal to give Stanford a 3-0 lead.

The Cardinal got its run game going late in the first quarter, as Bryce Love found an open lane off the right side of the field and sprinted past the OSU secondary en route to a 56-yard touchdown that gave the Cardinal a 10-0 lead.

Oregon State got itself back into the game in the second quarter when Victor Bolden beat Meeks badly for a 75-yard touchdown catch-and-run, narrowing the lead to 10-7.

Stanford drove deep into Oregon State territory late in the second quarter, thanks to Christian McCaffrey’s 51-yard run that put the ball at OSU’s 9-yard line, but that drive soon stalled and forced the Cardinal to settle for a field goal.

“It went well,” McCaffrey said. “I go where the O-line goes. They did a fantastic job today of opening up holes, allowing our guys to find creases and make a play with the ball in our hands.”

McCaffrey has seemed to get himself back on track very nicely. After an injury limited his play and effectiveness, he broke through at Arizona and showed his teeth again on Saturday, rushing for 199 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown.

The defense came up big in the third quarter, coming up with a big play that was later converted into a touchdown. Midway through the quarter, Harrison Phillips deflected a McMaryion pass and allowed sophomore linebacker Mustafa Branch to make a diving interception at their own 38.

“It’s been a good group,” Shaw said. “The guys are playing hard, they’re playing smart, they’re playing together. They don’t care who gets the play. So for one guy to take up a blocker so somebody else can make a play, they get excited about that because it’s an entire unit that’s playing really well.”

Although he did not make any plays with his arm, Chryst did make one with his legs that helped make the difference in the game. Three plays after the interception, he gashed the Beavers’ defense witth a 44-yard scramble that left the ball at OSU’s 4-yard line.

McCaffrey plunged in from a yard out two plays later to give the Cardinal a 23-7 advantage.

McMaryion ran for a 3-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter, but the Beavers could not gain any more momentum from that point, and Stanford was able to control the clock in the final period to come away with the victory.

Stanford podcast with Matt Harrington: McCaffrey could do some damage against Oregon State in today’s game

Christian McCaffrey was on a roll last Saturday against the Arizona Wildcats at Arizona Stadium McCaffrey captivated the crowd scoring three touchdowns it was like old times for McCaffrey.
