No contest as Cardinal dominate on both sides of the ball trounce Ducks 49-7

by Jerry Feitelberg

Palo Alto- The Stanford Cardinal behind the passing of Keller Chryst and the running of Bryce Love cruised to a 49-7 route of the Oregon Ducks. This series between and Oregon and Stanford has been hotly contested over the last seven or eight years. Oregon ran past the Cardinal in 2010 and 2011. Stanford won in 2012 and 2013. The Ducks prevailed in 2014 and 2015. The Cardinal won at Autzen Stadium last year 52-27 and dominated the Ducks Saturday night at Stanford Stadium. The Cardinal was missing two of their defensive stars, Harrison Phillips and Peter Kalambayi for the first half as they were called for targeting in the game against Utah last week. Phillips and Kalambayi made their presence felt in the second half as they were able to make several key stops early in the half.

The Cardinal got off to a roaring start. After the opening kickoff, they went on a six-play 77-yard drive to put seven points on the board with 12:34 left in the first quarter. The key plays were a thirty-four yard run by Bryce Love and a thirty-four-yard pass from Keller Chryst to J J Arcega Whiteside to put the ball on the Oregon 5-yard line. Love took it in for the score. The Cardinal defense held the Ducks to three and out to force a punt. The Cardinal took over on their 33-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Bryce Love broke through into the secondary and went 67-yards for his second touchdown of the night. Love has carried the ball five times for 115 yards, and there is still over ten minutes left to play in the quarter. Stanford leads 14-0. The Ducks came right back to make it 14-7 with 8:48 left. They went on a five-play 86-yard drive for the tally. Senior running back Royce Freeman mad two big runs on the drive. He ripped off a big 59-yarder and then followed with a 22-yard sprint that took the ball to the Cardinal one-yard line. Quarterback Braxton Burmeister ran it in for the score. The Cardinal regained the two-touchdown lead on their next possession. Behind Keller Chryst’s passing and the running of Bryce Love, the Cardinal went on a 71 -yard drive that consumed five minutes and sixteen seconds off the clock. Pass plays to Arcega-Whiteside, Connor Weddington, and a three-yard throw to Arcega-Whiteside gave Stanford a 21-7 lead. Bryce Love rushed for 136 yards. Stanford amassed 261 total offense in the first 15 minutes of action.

With 8:05 left in the second quarter, the Cardinal defense put seven points on the board when outside linebacker, Curtis Robinson, blocked a punt. Brendon Simmons scooped the ball up on the one-yard line and took it home for the touchdown. The CArdinal now own a 28-7 lead. Stanford to score from the Oregon 7-yard line with 34 seconds left in the first half. The drive was thwarted when the Ducks intercepted Chryst’s pass in the end zone. Stanford leads 28-7 after 30 minutes of play.

The Cardinal continued the onslaught when they scored with 6:53 left in the third quarter. Stanford went on a nine-play 75-yard drive that took five minutes and three seconds off the clock. Key plays on the drive were runs by Cameron Scarlett and two twelve-yard tosses to J J Arcega-Whiteside. Chryst’s last pass on the drive was caught by Arcega-Whiteside for the touchdown. The third quarter ends with Stanford in total control 35-7.

The Cardinal offense continued to pound the Ducks defense as they scored another touchdown with 11:09 remaining in the game. The Cardinal kept the ball on the ground. Running back Trevor Speights carried several times to get the Cardinal down to the six-yard line. With third and goal from the three-yard line, Chryst lofted a pass to tight end Colby Parkinson in the left corner of the end zone. Parkinson made a nice leaping catch for the TD. The drive took five minutes and eight seconds off the clock. Most of the fans have left as Stanford owns a 42-7 advantage.  Coach David Shaw removed most of his regulars and inserted K J Costello as quarterback midway through the fourth quarter. Costello engineered a 58-yard scoring drive to make it 49-7 with a little over three minutes left in the game.

Game Notes- Play was stopped in the first half when a rabbit was running all over the field of play. The 48,559 fans in attendance cheered the rabbit on as he was very elusive until someone on the Ducks caught him. That was the biggest play the Ducks made on defense all night.

Keller Chryst had a good night as he completed fifteen passes in twenty-one attempts. He threw for three touchdowns and had one pass intercepted. K J Costello was five for six with one TD. Bryce Love had seventeen carries for 147 yards. Love sat out most of the second half. Trevor Speights had 8 carries for 61 yards, and Cameron Scarlett also had 8 carries, and he picked up 35 yards for Stanford. Arcega Whiteside snagged six passes good for 112 yards, and Trent Irwin caught five.

Stanford amasses 504 yards of total offense compared to Oregon’s 309. Stanford’s record improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-12. Oregon is now 4-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Both Washington and Washington State lost this weekend and there are now no undefeated teams in the Pac-12. The Cardinal have a bye next week then travel to Corvallis to play the 1-6 Oregon State Beavers.

PALO ALTO–Stanford Cardinal running back Bryce Love is leading the nation with 1295 yards carried. He’s having an obvious impact in Stanford’s success. The Cardinal’s recent success with three straight wins has to do with a Heisman front runner and also getting their feet back up underneath them and the trip out to Sydney kind of threw them for a loop.

For the Cardinal to come back to the states kind out of rhythm it’s pretty much the same when the had to go down and play San Diego State and their a little bit better of a team than we gave them credit for. In the USC game it was one of those game where Sam Darnold kind of did what he can do and what he’s capable of.

The game loses to the Aztecs and to the Trojans were just two unfortunate bumps for the Cardinal. They look like they’ve found their footing of late and they’ve had some good circumstances in terms of teams who have key injuries. Last week’s win against Utah was a big win for the Cardinal  in terms of solidifying who they are as a team. Love was handcuffed early and wasn’t used to getting the yards he’s used to getting early.

Stanford held off a late Utah rally Saturday, and handed the No. 20 Utes their first loss of the season, a 23-20 setback in Pac-12 football at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Bryce Love enjoyed another big day for the Cardinal (4-2 overall,3-1 Pac-12), running for 152 yards and a 68-yard touchdown run that put Stanford up 23-13 early in the fourth quarter.

The Utes (4-1 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) drove to the Cardinal 30, where Utah quarterback Troy Williams, trying to avoid a sack, threw wildly and his pass was intercepted by Quenton Meeks. Justin Reed picked off another Williams pass with 5:52 left in the fourth quarter.

Williams’ 18-yard touchdown pass to Darren Carrington II closed the Utes’ deficit to 23-20 with :44 remaining in regulation.

Keller Chryst, who was cleared to start after missing last week’s game with an undisclosed injury, threw for 106 yards and a touchdown. Chryst also ran seven yards for Stanford’s first touchdown at 9:35 of the second quarter.

K.J. Costello, Chryst’s backup, also played and threw for 82 yards.

Williams completed 20 of 39 passes for 238 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Carrington II caught seven passes for 99 yards and a TD, and Zach Moss led Utah runners with 79 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts.

Jet Toner’s 46-yard field goal with six seconds left in the second quarter gave Stanford a 13-10 halftime lead.

Next Saturday, the Cardinal return home to host Oregon (4-2).

On the Stanford Podcast with Matt:

After last week’s brilliant performance Stanford running back Bryce Love will be going up against one of the toughest defenses in the Pac 12 the Utah Utes. The Utes are second in scoring defense and they also place first in interceptions, turnovers and pass defense efficiency.

The Cardinal who got a ten point win over the ASU Sun Devils at Stanford last week 34-24 and saw running back Bryce Love run for 301 yards to see how he runs on Utah’s defense will be answered soon enough at 7:15pm tonight. Love had a coming out after Stanford lost two straight road games to USC and San Diego State. Then soon after winning two straight games against UCLA and last week to ASU.

The Utes who had last weekend off and are well rested for this one have one player listed as injured for Saturday’s contest quarterback Tyler Huntley who is listed as doubtful and back up quarterback Troy Williams is probable to start. Cardinal quarterback Keller Chryst is back after missing most of the UCLA game and back up KJ Costello started the next game against ASU which the Cardinal won. The Cardinal head coach David Shaw has full confidence in his quarterbacks.

Stanford Cardinal Football Podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Utah will be keying in on Stanford’s Love but he can breaks some tackles

The Stanford Cardinal who got a big win over ASU 34-24 in their last game Saturday put the Cardinal at 3-2 and their heading to Utah and the Utes are 4-0 for the season and are playing very well and they had a bye last week and are well rested and their going to be playing in Utah where the stadium is at an elevation of 4200 feet. So the altitude might be a problem for the Cardinal this Saturday.

Not only did Cardinal running back Bryce Love  have an outstanding game at rushing for 301 yards against ASU in five games he’s got 5,087 yards in 97 carries. He’s averaging 11.1 yards per carry which is monumental who does that? There have only been a few players in the history of college football to wrack up that amount of yardage in such a short period of time.

Former USC running back Reggie Bush was able to carry for 255 yards in rushing in consecutive games so Love is in pretty good company. Bush was a Heisman Trophy winner all be it was taken back for NCAA policy violations. Love is having an unbelievable season for the Cardinal and who knew he was this good.

PALO ALTO–Stanford Cardinal running back Bryce Love had a big pay day for Love 25 carries and 301 yards. Like former Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey was their key guy last year and now it looks like Love could be the go to guy for ground game offense. Stanford head coach David Shaw doesn’t like to talk a lot about his players individually and sure enough here was Shaw again talking about Love’s performance. Stanford got a ten point win over Arizona State University on Saturday at Stanford Stadium 34-24.

Shaw talked about how versatile Love is, how fast he is and just how tough he is. He really gave ASU more than they can handle. Shaw said that the offensive line played as well as they have all year in Saturday’s game. This was Stanford’s second straight win and it was a game that the Cardinal wanted to put out of their minds after that tough loss at San Diego State.

Love runneth over: Arizona State bludgeoned by Stanford back’s record-setting performance

PALO ALTO, CA–Less than a year after Coach David Shaw was forced to step out of character, and heap platitudes on one member of his Stanford football team, the coach who preaches selflessness and teamwork, had to do it again.

This time Shaw had a plan, one he executed in his first utterings to the media after Stanford bludgeoned Arizona State, 34-24 on Saturday.

“The opening statement is Bryce Love, and the answer to every question is Bryce Love,” Shaw declared.

Love had himself a day, rushing for a school-record 301 yards and three touchdowns, surpassing the previous record of 284 yards, set by Christian McCaffrey in November. Love also became only the third FBS back since 2004 to top 1,000 yards rushing in his team’s first five games, joining Northern Illinois’ Garrett Wolfe (2006) and Leonard Fournette (2015).

Folks, that 1,000 yards just days after the official end of summer. Given that, Shaw couldn’t help himself. Like he did when describing the running style of the Heisman trophy runner-up, McCaffrey, Shaw had a few, additional things to say about the guy who last season was merely McCaffrey’s backup.

“He runs physical, he runs tough, and if he breaks a tackle, he’s gone,” Shaw gushed. “I’ve never seen anybody get hit and stumble and then get back up full speed. I’ve just never seen that before. It’s unbelievable.”

Unquestionably, this was the perfect storm, but that didn’t necessarily mean that Love would be perfect.  But he was.  Two weeks ago, Arizona State’s beleaguered defense surrendered 216 yards to San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny, and ASU Coach Todd Graham conceded during the week that Love would provide an even bigger challenge.

From Stanford’s perspective, quarterback stability is often the last piece to the puzzle, and they appear to have that, with K.J. Costello, the sophomore who made his first college start on Saturday, after his eye-opening second half of football against UCLA last week. Combine Costello’s emergence with the Cardinal’s offensive line having what Shaw said was their best performance to date, and Love was basically off and running from the opening kickoff.

Less than two minutes into the game, Love went 61 yards for a score, motoring past Sun Devils’ defenders like a speeding commuter on 101 during rush hour.

Early in the second quarter, Love knifed through the line, then broke outside on his way to a 43-yard score down the sideline.

Then early in third quarter, Love broke free up the middle, and ran 59 yards untouched for his final score.

“Every play that he broke, we had someone there, unblocked, and couldn’t tackle him,” Graham said. “You have to give him a lot of credit. He’s very, very good.”

But the run that had everyone talking was Love’s final one of the afternoon, a 7-yard run that was all effort and will, and ended with three ASU defenders with hands on the running back.

Stanford overcomes sluggishness, refs to down UCLA 58-34

Cardinal running back Bryce Love breaks into the clear against the Bruins for a 69-yard scoring run to give Stanford a 51-34 lead in the fourth quarter. (Los Angeles Times)

By Jeremy Harness

STANFORD – The Stanford football team had a few things to get through on Saturday, one of them being a slow start for its offense.

If that wasn’t enough, the officiating crew injected itself into the game in the second half, giving UCLA some momentum.

Stanford (2-2, 1-1 Pac-12) shook all of that off to turn in a marvelous bounce-back effort that got things back on track, particularly on offense, to put an end to a two-game losing streak with a 58-34 win over UCLA at Stanford Stadium Saturday night.

It certainly doesn’t hurt to have a guy like Bryce Love running the ball for you. After a bit of a slow start, the junior back proceeded to gash the porous Bruins run defense to the tune of 264 yards on 30 carries, including a gut-wrenching 69-yard dash into the end zone late in the fourth quarter that thwarted any chance that UCLA (2-2, 0-1 Pac-12) had of a late-game comeback.

That total is the second highest in program history, trailing only Christian McCaffrey’s 284-yard performance at Cal last year. He has now rushed for at least 160 yards in each game this season.

Love wasn’t the only one toting the rock with authority, however. Fellow junior Cameron Scarlett further gouged UCLA’s defense, piling up 86 yards on eight carries and found the end zone three times. As a team, the Cardinal rushed for an astounding 405 yards, and at least for one week, re-establishing their dominance in the part of the game that they take the most pride in.

This also overcame UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen’s 480-yard passing night, as he threw for three touchdowns while connecting on 40 of his 60 throws. He was also, however, intercepted twice, including one in the fourth quarter that Stanford quickly turned into a touchdown.

Surprisingly, the offense couldn’t get out its own way in the early going, as the first quarter was one that was full of mishaps for both teams.

The Cardinal gave UCLA a very short field when Jay Tyler muffed a punt at his own 15-yard line. Luckily for him, the Cardinal defense stiffened up and held the Bruins to just a field goal to tie the game at 3-3. Later on in the quarter, Stanford’s defense intercepted quarterback Josh Rosen deep in UCLA territory. However, the Cardinal were not able to move the ball at all and also had to settle for three points.

Neither Keller Chryst nor backup Ryan Burns could generate anything in the passing game, so the Bruins concentrated its efforts on bottling up Stanford’s prized running attack. So in the second quarter, K.J. Costello was summoned, and the sophomore responded, completing 13 of his 19 passes for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

That’s when Stanford’s run game came to life, and from that point, the Cardinal seized control of the game and never relinquished the lead.

However, there was one final obstacle for Stanford to get past, as the officiating crew attempted to take over the game in the third quarter, with a pair of very-questionable targeting calls.

A quarter after UCLA’s Adarius Pickett was ejected for targeting, Stanford cornerback Elijah Holder tackled Eldridge Massington below the waist during UCLA’s first drive of the half, but the officials took it upon themselves to call Holder for targeting anyway, although he was nowhere near Massington’s head while making the stop.

After a review, the call was somehow upheld, and Holder was subsequently kicked out of the game. But the refs didn’t stop there, as they also flagged safety Ben Edwards for targeting while making a tackle on the very next play. Thankfully for Stanford, the officiating crew came to its senses and overturned the call.

Holder’s penalty did enough damage, however, and the Bruins used that to score three plays later, as Soso Jamabo punched it in from three yards out to narrow Stanford’s lead to three.

Stanford, however, quickly overcame that by pounding the Bruins on the ground to get into scoring position on its next possession before Costello hit Trenton Irwin for a 15-yard touchdown, giving the Cardinal a 30-20 advantage.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Cardinal, however. Next week, Stanford will play host to Arizona State (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12), who upset No. 24 Oregon Saturday night.
