On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry:

It was a tough loss for the Stanford Cardinal last 24-21 last Saturday they dropped to 6-3 with the loss and now they have two loses in the Pac 12 and now they have to face a very tough opponent in the Washington Huskies at Stanford Stadium on Friday night. It would have been better for them to win in WSU but the Cougars held Cardinal running back Bryce Love to just 57 yards and Love was suffering from the ankle injury.

The report going into Friday night’s game is that Love is not 100% but he’s been practicing and how much time he sees will see what coach David Shaw comes up with for the game against the Cougars. The Washington State was a tough customer last Saturday and head coach Mike Leach might have been the reason why the Cougars have improved so much this season and why the Cardinal lost but lost in a close contest 24-21.

Washington State edges Cardinal in the snow 24-21

Washington State effectively bottled up the injured Bryce Love, then pushed across a go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, as the No. 25 Cougars stunned the visiting No. 18 Cardinal 24-21 Saturday in Pac-12 football at snowy Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash.

With the victory, the Cougars (8-2 overall, 5-2 Pac-12) stayed in the Pac-12 North race. The Cardinal (6-3, 5-2) had not played in the snow since 1936, in a game against Columbia in New York.

The snow started falling heavily at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars’ 94-yard winning drive was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Luke Falk to Jamire Calvin with 6:56 remaining in the game.

Falk needed 132 passing yards to break the Pac-12 career record of 13,600 established by Sean Mannion of Oregon State. Falk was 34 of 48 passing for 337 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He needs three more touchdown passes to become the conference’s all-time leader in that category.

Cardinal quarterback K.J. Costello took advantage of a fortuitous bounce when he fumbled a snap. The ball bounced back into his hands, and Costello ran for a 14-yard touchdown pulling Stanford to within 17-14 in the third quarter.

On the Cougars’ next possession, Falk’s pass on fourth-and-one from midfield was intercepted by Bobby Okereke, who returned the pick 52 yards for a Stanford touchdown, giving the Cardinal a 21-17 lead.

After WSU regained the lead and chewed up three minutes of clock near the end of the fourth quarter, Frankie Lubu’s interception of a Costello pass ended the Cardinal’s final threat.

Love was held to 69 rushing yards, his lowest total of the season. Slowed by an ankle injury, Love came into the game as the nation’s leading rusher, averaging 198 yards per game.

After scoring on a 52-yard touchdown run on Stanford’s first play of the second quarter, Love ran 15 more times for 17 yards.

WSU outgained the Cardinal 430 yards to 198 in total offense.

Stanford Cardinal Podcast with Marr Harrington: Cardinal counting on Love to carry them past WSU today

The Stanford Cardinal are counting heavily on running back Bryce Love to help them in offensive yards and having a great ground game as the Cardinal (6-2, 5-1) try to pick up another win this week against the Washington State Cougars (7-2, 4-2). Love was questionable before the game with a ankle injury but by Friday night Cardinal head coach David Shaw said that Love was ready to carry the ball for Stanford in what could be rainy, some snow, and freezing temps in Pullman.

Love who got inured against Oregon a game played at Stanford Stadium on Oct 14th after leaving the Cardinal could only tally 81 yards rushing, averaging three yards per carry. Love had averaged 10.3 yards per carry for first in the nation at 198.1 yards a game. His average per game carry is 53 yards. Love missed a game and still was able to hold the lead in rushing with 1387 rushing yards. His totals put his 56th out of 129 FBS schools.

Head coach David Shaw is just one win away from tying former Stanford coach Pop Warner (1924-32) who finished with 71 wins, Shaw who has 70 can tie that mark today with a win over WSU.

Stanford Cardinal Men’s Basketball Resist Claws of Chico State Wildcats, Win 91-81

PALO ALTO–With eight days remaining until the regular season, the Stanford Cardinal men’s basketball team commenced with an exhibition match against the Chico State Wildcats on Thursday, November 2.

The Cardinal welcomes five new additions to the team this year:

Kezie Okpala of Los Angeles, CA (6’8”, 195 pounds)
Daejon Davis of Seattle, WA (6’3”, 175 pounds)
Isaac White of Adelaide, Australia (6’1”, 185 pounds)
Kodye Pugh of Baltimore, MD (6’8”, 205 pounds)
Oscar Da Silva of Munich, Germany (6’9”, 210 pounds)

The first half started off smoothly for the Cardinal as forward Reid Travis made a shot less than a minute in. Just before the 10 minute mark, the Wildcats trailed the Cardinal by 11 points.

Chico began to step up their game about 15 minutes into the first half; the Wildcats trailed the Cardinal by seven points. Keith Datu, a Chico forward, then made a three-pointer and the Wildcats were only down by four with 3:33 remaining.

The score was tied at 17:00 exactly, when Marcus Sheffield made both free throws after a foul just over 10 seconds later.

Just before the 18:00 mark, two Chico players tried to tip the ball from the rim into the hoop, but Stanford’s Josh Sharma got the defensive rebound, keeping the score tied.

Chico’s Nate Ambrosini shot a three pointer, giving the Wildcats a 33-31 lead.

The score was tied 35-35 at halftime, signifying a decline in Stanford’s defensive plays.

A slam dunk just under 30 seconds into the second half by Travis gave Stanford a 37-36 lead. Minimal, but a step in the right direction. Travis then made one free throw, one basket, and another free throw to give Stanford a 41-36 lead.
The first eight minutes of the second half were a scoring frenzy. Stanford kept the lead, though there were very few moments where Chico trailed by more than five points. Envision a lion (predator) chasing a gazelle (prey). Chico’s score represents the lion’s movement and Stanford’s score represents the gazelle’s. Over the course of these eight minutes, the lion got close enough to nip the gazelle’s tail off. After the eight minute mark, the gazelle uses every single ounce of energy in its system to outrun the lion, which it eventually escapes.

In sports terminology, Stanford kicked things into overdrive after the eight minute “no more than five points ahead” stint and stepped up their game substantially about nine minutes in. They brought the score to 63-48 in the blink of an eye. They eventually exceeded Chico by 23 points (86-63), Travis making a majority of the baskets. Stanford kept the lead, which never dropped below 10 points the entire last half of the second period.

The final score was 91-81.

Travis was, undoubtedly, the stars of the game. He and fellow Marcus Sheffield sat down with the media after the match.

“I like the way we attacked,” Travis said. “I felt that on offense we tried to do the right thing as far as getting to the paint, getting to the buckets. I did not like the way we did not distribute that in the first half. That was a big emphasis on the offseason.”

“I think it just clicked for us,” Sheffield said of the eventual 23-point lead. “We had a few guys step up and play hard, get a few stops, and we were able to run out and get some easy baskets.”

Head Coach Jerod Haase then stepped into the conference room.

“I like the way the guys responded in the variety of times that I challenged them,” Haase remarked. “Competing on the defensive end, sharing the basketball on the offensive end, they responded to the things I said, I liked that. Defensively, there were certainly a lot of teachable moments out there. The energy was not consistent. Chico State has good defense, we weren’t ready for it. It is definitely something we can work on.”

Expected growing pains are present among the team, especially with a number of rookies and with a few absences, such as Cameron Walker who is dealing with injuries off the court. However, if the team continues to work in tandem as they had in the second half, the season should progress smoothly.

Stanford Cardinal Podcast with Matt Harrington: Shaw and Cardinal regroup after razor close win over Beavers; Prepare for WSU for next Saturday

PALO ALTO–The Stanford Cardinal who lost by only one last Thursday are getting back to work to prepare for next week’s game against the Washington State Cougars. Although Stanford got the 15-14 win past the Oregon State Beavers Cardinal head coach David Shaw put the blame of the coaching on himself and the Cardinal failed to beat the point spread and win by two touchdowns.

The absence of Stanford running back Bryce Love was the end result of a late scratch due to a lower body injury as Shaw made that announcement 90 minutes before the game that Love wouldn’t be in the line up. It was a very late surprise scratch and it really gave OSU a lot of confidence in going into that game. Also Love is a potential Heisman Trophy candidate that wouldn’t be on the field and it really took the air out of the sails for Stanford on Thursday.

Stanford squeaked out a 15-14 Pac-12 football win over Oregon State Thursday, doing it the hard way – without Bryce Love.

The No. 20 Cardinal came from behind, as Keller Chryst connected with JJ Arcega-Whiteside with 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, to complete the comeback at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.

Stanford (6-2 overall, 5-1 Pac-12) announced an hour and a half before the game that Love, who tweaked an ankle on Oct. 14 against Oregon, would be held out of the contest against the Beavers (1-7, 0-5).

A fumble recovery by Harrison Phillips with 2:30 remaining in the fourth quarter got Stanford the ball while trailing 14-9. The Cardinal converted a fourth-and-10 on the Beaver 40 when Chryst completed a 25-yard pass to Kaden Smith.

Arcega-Whiteside snagged a Chryst pass on a fade pattern in the end zone, but Stanford failed to convert a 2-point conversion. The Ducks mounted a final drive, but Darell Garretson’s pass from the Cardinal 44 was picked off with 3 seconds remaining.

Stanford opened the scoring with a 40-yard field goal by Jet Toner in the second quarter. OSU responded with a Garretson quarterback keeper, giving the Beavers a 7-3 lead. A Toner 33-yard field goal cut the Cardinal’s halftime deficit to 7-6.

Toner booted a 40-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter, pulling Stanford to within 14-9.

Cameron Scarlett, filling in for Love, gained 72 rushing yards. Chryst completed 16 of 33 passes for 141 yards, while the Cardinal was held to 222 yards of total offense. Stanford was averaging 456.7 yards in total offense going into Thursday’s game.

It was Oregon State’s second game under interim head coach Cory Hall. Gary Andersen was relieved of his duties two weeks ago.

Stanford’s next game is on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Washington State.

On the Stanford Podcast with Jerry Feitelberg

1 The Stanford Cardinal are at Oregon State University for tonight’s 6:00PM kick off. The Cardinal have a four game win streak and the Beavers have a five game losing streak coming into tonight’s action

2 The Beavers are having a rough time of it they’ve lost six of their last seven and on offense they’ve having a hard time finding the end zone and have faced tough defenses every game.

3. The Cardinal in the last game get a win behind the great passing of quarterback Keller Chryst. The running game of running back Bryce Love has helped pace the Cardinal so well that Love got to sit down after playing in the first half as the Cardinal were blowing out the Oregon Ducks

4 Love set the tone in the first half with a 77 yard carry and two three and four yard pass catches

5 The Cardinal are favored to win this one over OSU but are always cautioned by the coaches to never get over confident a 6:00PM kick off at OSU

If the 49-7 defeat over the Oregon Ducks at Stanford Stadium was an indication of things to come then Oregon State University whose on a five game losing  streak going into this game might have some concerns. On the flipside the Cardinal are coming into Thursday’s game with a four game win streak at OSU. The Cardinal won big last season past the Ducks 52-27 at Autzen Stadium .

The Cardinal had another opportunity to show the Ducks a good time last week as the Cards didn’t waste anytime out of the shoot scoring on a six play 77 yard offensive series at Stanford Stadium. On defense the Cardinal were able to hold the Ducks down to just a touchdown considering they were missing two defensive stars Harrison Phillips and Peter Kalambayi in the first half of the game.

OSU Beavers cornerbacks coach Cory Hall will serve as the interim head coach after head coach Gary Anderson quit. The Beavers needless to say are facing lots of problems on both sides of the ball considering they played one of their best games during this five game losing streak just losing by three to the Colorado Buffaloes 36-33 last Saturday.

Stanford Cardinal Podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal on a four game win streak faces a struggling Oregon State school on Thursday

By Jerry Feitelberg

PALO ALTO–There were a lot good things about doing today’s podcasts as there were a lot of smiles and good feelings going into this Thursday’s contest at Oregon State. The Stanford Cardinal are on a four game winning streak and could easily add a fifth as the Beavers head coach Gary Anderson recently quit an walked away from a huge salary. The Beavers who lost a heartbreak game against the Colorado Buffaloes in a razor close contest 36-33 drop their win loss record to 1-6.

The Cardinal in the meantime are getting it together with their four game win streak and coming off a huge win over the visiting Oregon Ducks 49-7. For the season this was the Cardinal’s first blow out for the season. They did beat UCLA 58-34 on Sep 23rd  but last Saturday the Cardinal left little doubt. They got excellent rushing again from running back Bryce Love 17 carries, 147 yards and two touchdowns and for quarterback Keller Chryst he threw for 15-21 and 181 yards, three touchdowns and one pick.
