New building name, still the same old house of horrors for the San Jose Barracuda. They were humiliated by the San Diego Gulls in a 6-1 defeat on Wednesday evening at Pachanga Arena. The loss snapped the Cuda’s 10-game point streak and have lost the last seven games they have played at the arena formerly known as the San Diego Sports Arena.

Joseph Blandisi drew first blood for San Diego in a first period dominated by the Anaheim Ducks affiliate. Blandisi from Sam Steel and raced his way into the Cuda zone, where he beat San Jose goalie Antoine Bibeau (6-3-3) with a backhander for his third goal of the season at the 18:09 mark. Luke Schenn received the secondary assist.

Sam Carrick doubled the lead for San Diego (10-11-1-2) when he scored a short-handed goal after punching home a rebound off an Adam Cracknell shot at the 6:52 mark of the second period. Carrick’s 12th goal of the season was also his third short-handed goal this season as well. It was the first short handed goal San Jose has given up on the season.

San Jose (16-4-1-3) redeemed themselves on their next power play opportunity. Kyle Wood entered the Gulls zone and fed a pass over to Nick DeSimone as he charged toward the high slot and snapped a wrist shot past Gulls goalie Kevin Boyle (7-5-0), who had been stone cold against the Cuda prior to that, for his sixth goal of the season at the 15:54 mark. Cuda point leader Francis Perron received the secondary assist.

In the third period, things unraveled for the Cuda. Matt Berry started the four unanswered goal barrage for San Diego early in the third period. Berry redirected a Jaycob Megna shot past Bibeau into the back of the net for his first goal of the season at the 4:00 mark. Chase De Leo received the secondary assist.

San Diego put the game away with a controversial goal halfway through the final frame. Deven Sideroff sent in a shot on net that created a mad scramble in front of the net. Berry crashed the net where the puck initially went in, but was waved off at first by referee Ryan Hersey. After a replay review, De Leo was credited with his sixth goal of the season at the 10:10 mark.

The Gulls put the nail in the coffin after a San Jose turnover. Giovanni Fiore centered a pass over to Troy Terry, who buried the puck past Bibeau for his ninth goal of the season at the 14:04 mark. Steel received the secondary assist.

Blandisi completed the scoring with his second goal of the night. He made a spin-o-rama move in front of the net that Bibeau poke-checked the puck off of Blandisi’s skate and slid underneath him for Blandisi’s fourth goal of the season at the 18:00 mark.

Boyle made 23 saves on 24 saves to earn the victory. Bibeau, who was under siege for most of the game, suffered the loss making 33 saves on 39 shots.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 1/3 on the power play. It was the fourth consecutive game the Cuda have scored with the man advantage. San Diego was 0/3.

Defenseman Jacob Middleton missed the game with an upper body injury he suffered in the third period against Ontario on Sunday.

Evan Weinger was a healthy scratch for the first time this season. Jeremy Roy and Cavan Fitzgerald were back in the lineup for San Jose.

The announced attendance was 6,225.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda return home on Friday, Dec. 21 to start a weekend series with the Tuscon Roadrunners at 7:00 pm at SAP Center.

By Marko Ukalovic

It didn’t take long for the San Jose Barracuda to get the bad taste of San Diego out of their mouth. Less than 24 hours after their shootout loss to the Gulls, San Jose scored three unanswered goals to start the game in route to a 5-2 victory over the Ontario Reign on Sunday evening at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

Nick DeSimone drew first blood for San Jose (16-3-1-3) when he collected the puck at the blue line, skated in toward the net from the left-wing and snapped a wrist shot past Reign goalie Peter Budaj (3-5-2) for his fifth goal of the season at the 8:51 mark of the first period. Alex True and Jon Martin received assists.

Martin gave the Cuda a 2-0 lead at the 13:00 mark when he was able to spun a wrist shot from distance off the crossbar into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Zach Frye and True received assists.

San Jose outshot Ontario 11-8 in the first period as Cuda goalie Josef Korenar (10-1-1) wasn’t tested much in the opening frame.

In the second period, San Jose scored its third unanswered goal on the power play. Jacob Middleton fed a pass over to True in the slot, who beat a diving Budaj, who ended up on his stomach, into the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season at the 3:25 mark. Kyle Wood picked up the secondary assist.

Ontario would make things interesting as they scored the next two goals to close the gap to a one-goal deficit. First, Kyle Clauge was able to take advantage of a failed clearing attempt by San Jose as he shoveled in a loose puck from atop the crease past Korenar for his second goal of the season at the 14:40 mark. Then Matt Moulson fired a shot past Korenar from between the faceoff circles for his eighth goal of the season with just 18 seconds left in the middle frame.

Dylan Gambrell gave the Cuda an insurance goal at the beginning of the third period. He batted an airborne puck out of mid-air past Budaj for his sixth goal of the season at the 1:02 mark. Thomas Gregoire and DeSimone received assists.

Francis Perron added to the party and closed out the scoring when True, on his way to a career-high, four-point night, found Perron open in the low slot and he buried the puck past Budaj for his 11th goal of the season at the 9:12 mark.

Korenar finished the game, making 24 saves on 26 shots for his 10th victory of the season. Budaj suffered the loss, making 33 saves on 38 shots.

GAMES NOTES: San Jose was 1/5 on the power play. Ontario was 0/2.

Jeffery Truchon-Viel and Jamie Devane exchanged fisticuffs with each other late in the third period as the Reign’s frustrations had boiled over at that point.

The announce attendance was 7,771.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda conclude their three-game road trip with a stop back down to San Diego to take on the Gulls on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at Pachanga Arena.

Barracuda fall to Gulls in shootout 4-3

The San Diego Gulls never say die attitude helped erased a two-goal deficit and eventually win 4-3 in a shootout over the San Jose Barracuda on Friday evening at Pachanga Arena. Despite the loss, San Jose has earned a point in nine straight games.

San Jose (15-3-1-3) drew first blood on the power play just 36 seconds into the game. Jayden Halbgewachs fed a pass over to Alex True below the right circle and True buried a point-blank shot past Gulls goalie Kevin Boyle (6-5-0) for his eighth goal of the season. Vincent Praplan received the secondary assist.

The Cuda would double their lead when captain John McCarthy pick-pocketed the puck off Troy Terry’s stick that led to a 3-on-1 odd man rush along with Kyle Wood and Antti Suomela up the ice. Suomela’s cross-ice pass would deflect off a Gulls defender, as he went sliding onto his stomach, and into the back of the net for Suomela’s first career AHL goal at the 11:35 mark.

San Diego (9-11-1-2) cut the lead in half just under two minutes later when Max Jones swiped in a rebound off a Sam Carrick shot past Cuda goalie Antoine Bibeau (6-2-3). Jones won a battle along the corner and was rewarded with his sixth goal of the season at the 13:28 mark.

Jones evened up the game in the second period for his second goal of the season. After a failed clearing attempt by San Jose kept the puck in their own zone, Isac Lundestrom fed Jones who sniped a shot over Bibeau’s left shoulder for his seventh goal of the season at the 3:57 mark.

The middle frame featured two fights that happened over the final 11 minutes of the period. Jeremy Roy went toe-for-toe with Carrick and then Jon Martin and Like Schenn exchanged fisticuffs.

San Jose regained the lead early in the third period when Dylan Gambrell rifled a shot from the right point over the shoulder of Boyle for his fifth goal of the season at the 6:43 mark. Wood and Keaton Middleton received assists.

The Gulls scored the equalizer on the power play when Carrick bounced a pass off a Cuda defender past Bibeau for his 11th goal of the season halfway through the third period at the 10:03 mark.

In overtime the Cuda had a golden chance to leave San Diego with a win, but McCarthy and Halbgewachs weren’t able to connect on their 2-on-1 odd man rush.

Adam Cracknell scored the game-winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout.

Boyle made 28 saves on 31 shots to earn the victory. Bibeau suffered the tough luck loss making 25 saves on 28 shots.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 1/4 on the power play. San Diego was 1/5.

The announced attendance was 10,911.

Korenar made a key moment in the game in the second period while Bakersfield was on the power play. By Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Barracuda scored two unanswered goals early and then three unanswered late in the game to take down the San Diego Gulls 5-3 on Monday evening at SAP Center. They have now won three games in a row and sit atop the Pacific Division with 29 points.

Kyle Wood scored the game-winning goal at the 6:45 mark of the third period when Francis Perron led him with a pass into the San Diego zone. With the help of a screen from Alexander True, Wood fired a shot from the point past Gulls goalie Jared Coreau (3-4-2) for his first goal of the season. Wood finished with a two-point night (1G, 1A).

“I’ve been trying to chip in any way possible,” said Wood. “It’s nice to see that one finally go in. (It) only took 18 or 19 games. So it was a big relief.”

San Jose (13-3-1-2) drew first blood early into the first period. Kyle Wood skated in along the right boards, fed a wide open Alex True, who beat Coreau top self into the upper left corner of the goal for his fifth goal of the season at the 3:53 mark. Keaton Middleton received the secondary assist.

Wood made an excellent defensive play to stop a goal from San Diego (8-8-1-1) three minutes after assisting on True’s goal. Troy Terry was able to keep inside the Cuda zone when San Jose failed to clear the puck. He fed a pass to the left slot to Kalle Kossila, who had a wide-open net to shoot at. Wood made a diving save with his body to keep the score 1-0 in favor of San Jose.

San Jose dominated play in the penalty-free opening frame as they outshot San Diego 16-5.

San Diego had a short-handed scoring chance just before the halfway mark of the second period from Joseph Blandisi, but Cuda goalie Josef Korenar (8-1-1) was able to stop Blandisi’s wrist shot without giving up a rebound.

San Jose extended its lead to 2-0 when Nick DeSimone had possession of the puck along the right boards and threaded a pass into the middle of the crease where captain John McCarthy re-directed the puck past Coreau for his fifth goal of the season at the 12:16 mark. Rourke Chartier received the secondary assist.

San Jose closed out the middle frame with the ice tilted in their favor as they outshot San Diego 14-7.

San Diego cut the lead in the half early in the third period when Devin Sideroff won a battle behind the net and fed a pass over to a wide open Alex Dostie, who was all alone on Korenar and snapped a back-hander into the lower right corner of the net for his first goal of the season at the 2:17 mark. Ben Thomson received the secondary assist. Luke Schenn received the secondary assist.

It didn’t take long for the Gulls to get the equalizer 13 seconds later. Blandisi fought his way to win a battle and sent a pass to a crashing Chase Deleo, who corralled the puck and tapped it home past Korenar for his fifth goal of the season at the 2:30 mark.

“They scored those two quick goals and we just kinda stuck with it,” said Cuda head coach Roy Sommer. “We get down, guys buckle in and they get mad. They want to continue the success we’re having.”

Evan Weinger gave the Cuda san insurance goal when he finished off a pretty 2-on-1 chance burying the puck past Coreau into the upper right corner for his fifth goal of the season at the 11:19 mark. Matt Fonteyne skated in along the left boards and sent in a pass right to the tape of Weinger, who made no mistake about it as Coreau never had a chance in making a save. Jeffery Truchon-Viel received the secondary assist.

Steve Olesky immediately went after Weinger in frustration with Truchon-Viel coming to the aid of his teammate. Both Truchon-Viel and Olesky received matching roughing penalties.

True scored his second goal of the night on an empty netter with the Gulls having pulled Coreau with over three minutes remaining in the game. Jon Martin fed the puck over to True who did a spin-o-rama before cashing in with his sixth goal of the season at the 17:11 mark.

Terry completed the scoring when he beat Korenar with a point-blank shot that went top-shelf after taking a feed from Blandisi from behind the net. Terry’s eighth goal of the season came at the 18:42 mark.

Korenar finished the game, making 19 saves on 22 shots for the victory. Coreau made 32 saves on 36 shots in suffering the defeat.

Alex True and San Jose (12-3-1-2) drew first blood before the game was even two minutes old. True scored his fourth goal of the season at the 1:25 mark of the first period, putting the puck past Heat goalie Nick Schneider’s five-hole (6-2-0). Cavan Fitzgerald and Francis Perron received assists.

Dillon Dube received the secondary assist.

In what would be the turning point in the game, San Jose regained their three-goal lead when Jeffery Truchon-Viel spun in a puck in from close range at the 4:01 mark.

San Jose extended their lead to 5-1 after Jayden Halbgewachs received a pass wide open in the slot from True and buried it past Schneider for his sixth goal of the season at the 6:24 mark. The goal snapped a seven-game goaless drought for Halbgewachs.

Schneider’s was sent to the showers right after allowing five goals on only 14 shots. Jon Gillies came in mop-up duty for the rest of the game.
