49ers competitive with first-place Cardinals, but still suffer narrow, 19-13 loss

Cardinal spikeBy Morris Phillips

Every trying football season has a loss like this. Of course, the hard-luck 49ers have had several, just not one with such a heavy contribution from the referees, who flagged the team 13 times, including a controversial call against Quinton Dial on Arizona’s game-winning drive.

Playing arguably the NFC’s best team, and a division rival that embarrassed them in September with a 40-point loss, the 49ers battled the NFC West-leading Cardinals on even terms for 3 ½ quarters only to lose late, 19-13. A roughing-the-passer penalty against Dial allowed the Cardinal’s game winning drive to continue as Carson Palmer rumbled into the end zone to break a 13-13 tie with 2:28 remaining.

On the pivotal play, Dial sacked Palmer, rapping both hands around the quarterback for an eight-yard sack. But the referees maintained that Dial had tackled Palmer using the crown of his helmet, giving Arizona a critical first down. Nine plays later, Palmer scrambled into the left corner of the end zone for the game-deciding score.

“He hit me right in my face with the crown of his helmet,” Palmer maintained when asked about the play afterwards.

Dial felt that Palmer ducked his head at the point of contact, inadvertently selling the call to the referees. Had the call not been made, the Cardinals would have faced 3rd-and-18 at their 24-yard line with less than seven minutes remaining in a tie game. To that point, the 49ers’ defense had held the NFL’s highest rated offense to one touchdown and two, first-half field goals.

Blaine Gabbert-in his third start in place of the injured and benched Colin Kaepernick—kept the 49ers in it with his 25 of 36 passing for 318 yards. Gabbert led the 49ers on a 12-play drive just before halftime that closed the Arizona advantage to 6-3. Then after the Cardinals opened the second half with a nine-play drive that ended with David Johnson’s one-yard touchdown run, Gabbert kept the 49ers in it with a 77-yard drive and an 8-yard touchdown pass to Vance McDonald that made the score 13-10.

“I think Blaine has continuously gotten better as he’s been in here,” Coach Jim Tomsula said, far more responsive about his quarterback than he was willing to discuss the refereeing. “I thought he ran the offense well today.”

The 49ers outgained the Cardinals on the day with 368 yards in total offense, but couldn’t strike early and they saw their final drive of the day end when Anquan Boldin’s 18-yard catch left him two yards short of a first down at the Arizona 22-yard line. Gabbert had some success with his deep ball, hitting Torrey Smith on a 41-yard pass play that set up the game-tying field goal in the fourth quarter.

Overall, better than those Kaepernick days, but still not good enough.

“I believe there’s progress, but we’re in the business of winning games and we have to win games,” Tomsula admitted.

While the 49ers battled the referees as much as the Cardinals, Arizona overcame the loss of two running backs to stay atop the NFC West. Starter Chris Johnson and key reserve Andre Ellington were both lost during the game to injury, but Carson Palmer kept the Cardinals driving, often with the help of veteran receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald finished with 10 catches for 66 yards, and added some perspective from Arizona’s viewpoint afterwards.

“It wasn’t pretty,” Fitzgerald admitted. “But I’ve been around enough to know that any way you can get a win is a good one.”

The Cardinals won in San Francisco/Santa Clara for the first time since 2008. The 49ers were officially eliminated from the division race with the loss, falling to 3-8.

The 49ers are on the road the next two weeks, first visiting Chicago, then Cleveland, before returning home to face the Cincinnati Bengals.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Cardinals top of the NFC leaderboard; 49ers should be worried for Levis matchup

SANTA CLARA–Last week the San Francisco 49ers (3-7) lost to the Seattle Seahawks (5-5) and I’m not one particularly for predictions but the Arizona Cardinals (8-2) are quite possibly the best team in the NFC right now and the 49ers will lose this Sunday even though their at home at Levis Stadium.

I would bet you anything if you got to Vegas this week you’ll see the Cardinals at the top of the Wager Board in the sports betting room. Arizona is just a really, really good team. They already spanked the 49ers this season and the 49ers aren’t significantly better or any better that I’m aware of compared to that early game.

That game last week was an embarrassment in Glendale September 27th the 49ers just got destroyed, they really weren’t in that game which is surprising because Arizona is a division rival. To see the 49ers come out flat in that one was really disappointing and while the Niners can come out with little more fire this time they may or may not the fact remains that Arizona is a really good team.

On the day before Thanksgiving Wednesday no one informed the media that 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert would be taking questions at a press conference in the basement of Levis Stadium therefore no reporters showed up to cover the Gabert presser.

Gabbert showed up and approached an empty podium as Comcast’s Mindi Bach was the only reporter who showed up to the presser. Gabbert jokingly said into the microphone, “Good to see ya” to the empty seats in the room and took a seat and said “I’ll be the one taking questions today.” Looks like everyone was either at SAP getting ready for the Sharks that night or they all took the afternoon off for early holiday.

49ers Seek to Get Their Revenge on Division Leading Cardinals

By: Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers are 1-1 in the Blaine Gabbert era, as they fell last week 29-13 to the Seahawks. Their record now stands at 3-7 on the season, tied for last in the NFC.

This week the 49ers get a rematch against the (8-2) Arizona Cardinals, a team that blew them out 47-7 in the third week of the season. However, there is a different quarterback under center from the blowout that saw Colin Kaepernick throw four interceptions, including two for touchdowns in the first two drives of the game.

Kaepernick won’t be facing one of the best defenses this week, as he has been placed on the injured reserve list after receiving surgery on his non-throwing shoulder earlier this week. Instead, Gabbert will get the start against the Cardinals, a team he has never faced in his NFL career.

Earlier in the week, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Tyrann Mathieu commented on the difference of having Gabbert under center for the 49ers, “it seems like Gabbert has a little better grip on what’s going on. He knows where the ball needs to go. I think he gives the [49ers] a better option going forward”.

The Cardinals have been on a tear this year, with the second best point differential at +120 and the highest scoring offense, averaging 33.6 points per game. Quarterback, Carson Palmer, is returning to old form, as he passed the 3,000-yard mark on the season in last week’s win over the Bengals.

It will be interesting to see how Gabbert handles the Cardinals, but like last week Arizona is too strong for the 49ers. However, with a different quarterback it will be a much closer game, assuming Gabbert doesn’t throw four picks as well.

NFL Podcast with Tony Renteria: Tomsula wasn’t the one who picked these players the GM did

On the NFL podcast with Tony San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula was blamed for the team’s failures and there has been talk that Tomsula’s job is hanging in the balance. It was team general manager Trent Baalke who gave Tomsula the roster of players that he has to work with. When Tomsula walked into this job he had a number of first stringers who retired, players who didn’t work out because of off field legal issues, or had or feared injuries.

49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert labored with the offense in Seattle in his second game starting since 49ers starter Colin Kaepernick was placed on injured reserve. Gabbert saw the Hawks defense shut down the San Francisco offense and he wanted to quickly put this trip to Seattle behind him.

Competing against the Seahawks still a mystery for the 49ers

Rawls running  By Morris Phillips

As if the 49ers didn’t already have enough nemeses waiting for them at CenturyLink Field on Sunday, they went a created another one in rookie Thomas Rawls.

Rawls—undrafted and thought to be too small for the NFL—tore up the 49ers with 209 yards rushing on 30 carries as the Seahawks blew past the 49ers 29-13. The 49ers have lost seven of eight to their NFL West rivals, most of them as uncompetitive as this one, including the January 2014 NFC Championship Game meeting that appears to have defined both franchises going forward.

Coming off a rare win, and an extra week of preparation the 49ers couldn’t have been any flatter than they appeared in falling behind 20-0 well into the second quarter. Rawls had a lot to do with that, trucking cornerback Tremaine Brock on the third play of the game instead of running out of bounds. The Seattle sideline erupted in reaction to Rawls’ physical play, and the tone was set on that play as the 49ers went on to tackle poorly and wilt, while the Seahawks were invigorated.

Rawls replaced the injured Marshawn Lynch–a well-established nemesis of the 49ers—finding out just before game time that he would be the starter. Rawls had already proven in previous stints replacing Lynch that he’s an emerging factor for the Seahawks, but with the run through Brock and his franchise record for rookie rushers established on Sunday, he took his game to another level.

“I never run out of bounds,” Rawls said. It’s just my makeup. It’s my whole mentality. I think I would feel less of a person just running out of bounds instead of being physical.”

While Rawls sounded like he played, 49ers Coach Jim Tomsula found himself in the familiar position of explaining his team’s shortcomings. Given that, Tomsula got high marks for originality in the face of repetitiveness, when explaining how his defense missed so many tackles.

“You can’t go into a tackle worried about missing the tackle. You’ve just got to tackle,” Tomsula explained.

And if you don’t tackle, the statistical nightmare that the first 25 minutes of Sunday’s game was for the 49ers could be the result. At that juncture, the 49ers trailed 20-0, and were out-first downed 17-2. The 49ers amassed just 38 yards of offense at that point, a number that looked considerably healthier once the team mounted a 92-yard touchdown drive to end the first half.

The score right before halftime also announced the arrival of Blaine Gabbert, who went on to play well, passing for 264 yards and no interceptions, including the first touchdown pass for the 49ers against the Seahawks since 2013. At one point, Gabbert pulled the 49ers within 20-10, but the defense didn’t have delayed awakening, going on to allow 508 yards in offense to Seattle, including 255 yards rushing.

Gabbert found success throwing to his tight ends, Brent Celek and Vance McDonald, who combined for six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Gabbert also hooked up with Anquan Boldin on a 28-yard gainer in the fourth quarter, but the veteran receiver departed after that play, clutching his previously injured hamstring.

With the win, the Seahawks improved to 5-5, giving them a footprint in the NFC playoff picture. The Cardinals beat the Bengals in the Sunday Night game to re-establish a three game lead in the NFC West. The 49ers fell to 3-7 and 0-5 on the road.

So what was learned on Sunday regarding the Seahawks and 49ers? For San Francisco, effort—or lack therof—is everything. The 49ers were so far removed from the mindset of a physical, committed football team it spilled all over the statistical picture of the game with the missed tackles and paltry 22 minutes of offensive possession time. Seattle reporters didn’t hesitate to take their shots with Times columnist Matt Calkins registering the biggest blow saying “the 49ers are the NFL’s version of airbrushing: They make everyone look better than they are.”

So for the two-time NFC champion Seahawks, the same line of thinking applies. Seattle’s struggled to close out in the fourth quarter with late leads in all five of their losses. After a hum-drum win against the 49ers, those same Seattle reporters couldn’t help but point out that the Hawks have beaten the 49ers twice, Dallas (without Tony Romo), Detroit and Chicago (without Jay Cutler). So are the Seahawks merely good enough to beat the downtrodden or are they legitimate contenders again?

Richard Sherman brushed off all of the negative talk, simply saying “a win is a win.”

And for the 49ers, luckily on an afternoon that was as bad as any in a forgettable season, a loss is just a loss.

San Francisco 49ers report: Getting over the Kap; shoulder surgery ends 49er QB season maybe released after the season

by David Zizmor

Photo credit komonews.com 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick during happier times at Super Bowl XLVII

SANTA CLARA–San Francisco 49ers quarterback  Colin Kaepernick will have left shoulder surgery. The 49ers placed him on the injured reserve list. He is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday in Vail Colorado. Kaepernick is suffering from a torn labrum.

Kaepernick threw for all but one game thus far on the 49ers schedule and he sat out two weeks ago against the Atlanta Falcons when backup Blaine Gabbert got the start in the 49ers victory 17-16. The 49ers promoted backup quarterback Dylan Thompson from the practice squad.

Thompson will serve as Gabbert’s back up in Seattle on Sunday. Kaepernick was probable for this weekend’s game but was a scratch when he was on the injury reserve list on Wednesday. Kaepernick’s performance has suffered for most of the season and the 49ers had lost a good share of their games with Kaepernick under center. There has been talk the 49ers could release Kaepernick after this season is over.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Gabbert ready for the big test at Century Link this Sunday

On the 49ers podcast today, the 49ers are coming off a one point win against the Atlanta Falcons two weeks ago at Levi’s Stadium. They had the bye this past week and are headed to Seattle to face the Seahawks. They have lost two of their last three games.

The 49ers 3-6 have a huge task in front of them in playing this Sunday at Century Link Field in Seattle and those fans are like the 12th man.  After defeating the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday by a point this will be a different task for 49ers quarterback Blain Gabbert. It will be up to him to deliver and this is his big chance to prove himself against Seattle.

49ers Hope to Turn Around Struggles in Seattle

by Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers return to action this Sunday, as they travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. Seattle has faced their own struggles as well this season with a 4-5 record heading into Sunday. However, three of their five losses have been by less than four points.

It was just a month ago where the Seahawks blew out the 49ers 20-3 on Monday Night Football in Santa Clara. The 49ers offense couldn’t get anything going, even though their defense held them in the game for the majority. San Francisco will have someone new under center from a month ago, as Blaine Gabbert will be starting his second straight.

He won his first start of the year with a 17-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. He led two touchdown drives, throwing for 185 yards on 60% pass percentage. The 49ers offense looked revived with Gabbert under center, finally having a quarterback that can get the ball into their receivers hands.

Gabbert’s biggest challenge will come to his right as he will have to avoid Richard Sherman. Sherman hasn’t done much yet this year, with eight pass deflections and no interceptions. Earl Thomas leads the mighty Seahawks secondary with three picks on the year. The 49ers will also be using their make shift running back core, with Shaun Draughn expected to get the majority of carries once again.

San Francisco wasn’t able to stop Marshawn Lynch in their first matchup, who will be looking to have a field day come Sunday.

Seattle has just dominated the 49ers at home in recent years, as San Francisco hasn’t won in the pacific northwest since 2011. The streak will continue this year, as expect Seattle to just dominate the banged up 49ers defense. Gabbert should be able to get something going offensively however.

Is Blaine Gabbert the 49ers Future Quarterback

By: Joe Lami

With the benching of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers finally have a breath of fresh air in the locker room.  It seemed to work two weeks ago in the 17-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Blaine Gabbert was able to move the ball down the field with efficiency and ended up with 185 yards on 15 completions and most importantly two touchdowns, something that Kaep only did six times before the benching.

Granted that the opposition was the Falcons defense, Gabbert is proving himself that he is a solution for right now. He faces a mountain ahead of him this week by having to go into Seattle and face the Seahawks, something that Kaepernick was never able to conquer.

It’s well known that the 49ers season is over and at this point they are playing for pride, which makes one have to look towards the draft next year in 2016. They are still predicted to have a high pick and have many positions that need to be filled with it, especially at the offensive line.

With it seeming more and more likely that California quarterback Jarred Goff will be staying for his senior season at Berkeley, the 49ers won’t be able to take the quarterback that everyone is predicting they want. With this in mind, do the 49ers waste a pick on the best quarterback available or do they go ahead and fill in some of the holes in some much-needed areas.

If Gabbert can continue as a winning quarterback, he should stay at quarterback for San Francisco in 2016.  It can give the option to us pick to bolster the terrible offensive line in Santa Clara while waiting for a chance at their eventual savior in Goff.  The 49ers just need a QB that can deliver their receivers the ball. San Francisco has one of the best wide receiving cores in the NFL that just need someone that can get the ball in their hands to win ball games and it appears that Gabbert is enough to get that done.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Gabbert, Tomsula, & 49ers take bye in preparation for Seattle trip

On the 49ers podcast the 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert was all the rage last week beating the Atlanta Falcons and the 49ers winning by a field goal. Gabbert kept the 49ers in check and the defense didn’t allow the Falcons to score a touchdown that would have surpassed the 49ers lead.

The 49ers have a bye this week as they prepare for the Seattle Seahawks. Gabbert who was named the starting quarterback for the game in Seattle on Sunday 22nd. The team looked like they put out a lot harder in the game versus Atlanta than some of their previous games. The Falcons at one time had a perfect record and are the one of the top teams in the NFL. The win over the Falcons last week could be a turn around for the suffering 49ers.
