It’s Just My Opinion: 49ers, Kaepernick need each other

SANTA CLARA Calif — With incumbent starter Colin Kaepernick most likely opting out of his contract, along with backups Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, and Thad Lewis (who spent the entire 2016 season on injured reserve) all set to be unrestricted free agents, the San Francisco 49ers could find themselves in murky waters at the most important position once free agency opens up on March 9 at 1:00 p.m. PT.

The NFL Scouting Combine begins next week where the likes of Clemson signal-caller Deshaun Watson and North Carolina’s quarterback Mitch Trubisky will be on display for teams in dire need of a quarterback.

San Francisco (2-14), who own the second overall pick in April’s draft, fall in line with the 1-15 Cleveland Browns who have the first overall pick and are in desperate need of a quarterback, after having a league-high six different quarterbacks take a snap in 2016.

New 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco’s fourth head coach in four years), who oversaw the NFL’s highest scoring offense at 33.8 points per game, doesn’t have a quarterback like Matt Ryan to run his uptempo offense currently on the roster for the 49ers.

Ryan passed for 4,944 yards with 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions while taking home the MVP trophy and being named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year for his spectacular season guiding the Atlanta Falcons to NFC Championship, before losing to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

It may be tempting for Shanahan, along with new general manager John Lynch to spend their first round pick on either the aforementioned Watson or Trubisky and let him develop as the 49ers rebuild, but here’s a real idea: Kaepernick should opt-in and remain with the 49ers.

You may ask yourself, why would a natural, gifted athlete like Kaepernick, who started his 10th career game in Super Bowl XLVII (albeit a loss to the Baltimore Ravens), would want to continue a union with an organization that has gone down hill ever since parting ways with Jim Harbaugh in 2015?

It’s quite simple: Kaepernick could resurrect his career under a new regime (while pocketing the $14.5 million he’s owed by opting in for 2017, but gives the team the ability to trade him if the right deal comes along), and the 49ers as an organization, can begin to put the pieces back together with the help of a guy who can unite the locker room.

If you’re Kaepernick, staying with the 49ers gives you the best opportunity to be a starter and San Francisco seems like the more comfortable fit.

I can’t see Kaepernick playing for the Jets, whose head coach in Todd Bowles is entering the 2017 season on the hot seat.

Chicago, who wants to move away from the albatross that is quarterback Jay Cutler, is not an option. The Bears have been rumored to be interested in New England backup Jimmy Garoppolo and hold the third overall pick and could use that pick as trade bait to land the Illinois native.

For what it’s worth, if the Bears do dump Cutler as expected, many NFL insiders and “experts” believe that Cutler would be a fit with the 49ers.

Let me say this, “No.”

Cutler has no business being a starting quarterback in the NFL anymore and should retire, as he’s hinted this offseason.

Scratch off Cleveland and Buffalo from the list of possible landing spots for Kaepernick.

Hue Jackson is enamored with Watson and Trubisky and won’t pass up taking a quarterback this year after trading away Cleveland’s pick (No. 2 overall) last season to Philadelphia that turned into Carson Wentz.

Wentz threw for 3,782 yards and 16 touchdowns during his rookie campaign and looks like the Eagles’ franchise quarterback for the next 10 years.

Buffalo is expected to pick up Tyrod Taylor’s option worth $27.5 million in 2017. Taylor has enjoyed success in two seasons with the Bills, tossing back-to-back seasons with 3,000 yards to go along with 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

In 11 starts last season, Kaepernick threw for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions, but the 49ers were just 1-10 during that stretch.

Kaepernick showed flashes of the quarterback that had defenses on their heels at times, but the 49ers were just an eye sore to watch that had many fans staying away from Levi Stadium in droves and changing the channel quickly.

But with 72 touchdowns and 30 interceptions (4:3 TD/INT ratio), Kaepernick still has the ability to grow into a serviceable quarterback and with the help of Shanahan, who has a history of working well with average quarterbacks like Brian Hoyer (44 TDs/26 INTs) and Robert Griffin III (42 TDs/26 INTs), Kaepernick could be the right man to lead the 49ers at quarterback in 2017.

Kaepernick, Shanahan, and Lynch all met with each other this past Wednesday, Lynch confirmed while appearing on KNBR radio in San Francisco, as first reported by ESPN Staff Writer Nick Wagoner.

Lynch was coy on the nature of the meeting, but mentioned that the group had a “great discussion,” and “Colin left excited, we left excited and I think as Kyle and I really believe, the evaluation is still very much fluid.”

During Lynch’s introductory news conference, Lynch mentioned that he and Kaepernick developed a strong rapport while the former safety was working as a color analyst on FOX.

Shanahan is certain to sign unrestricted free agent quarterback Matt Schaub, whom Shanahan worked with in Atlanta and Houston. Schaub could help Kaepernick learn the deep offensive playbook that Shanahan has developed over the years in the NFL while working for his father, Mike Shanahan.

The older Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the 49ers’ last Super Bowl title after the 1994 season, before leading the Denver Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowls at the end of the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Quite honestly, Kaepernick should want to opt-in and sign a two-year extension giving him three more years with the 49ers and be the bridge to the real quarterback of the future of the 49ers: USC’s Sam Darnold.

Darnold looked NFL-ready, leading the Trojans to a 52-49 victory over Penn State in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual. The freshman threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns and engineered an 80-yard game-tying drive with less than two minutes remaining.

His 473 total yards broke the Rose Bowl record of 467, which was set by Vince Young during the Texas quarterback’s all-time great performance against USC in 2006.

Darnold is a quarterback that I know Shanahan and Lynch would love to have as the face of the 49ers and build around in the upcoming years.

For now, Kaepernick and the 49ers are better together, rather than apart.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Lami: Niners hoping for success and longevity with Lynch and Shanahan

The recent six year signings of new San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan signals that the 49ers are committed for the long haul to these two newest members of the 49ers. Their giving a six year contract to both of these guys that’s a very rare offer and in the NFL that doesn’t happen too often that kind of just goes to show that this team is in a lot of hurt they need a lot of time to recover. 49ers CEO Jed York is finally showing his patience towards the recovery of the process.

When it comes down to it the 49ers know that they can’t go off ship now they’re stuck with these guys so the 49ers are kind of willing to give time in the process and it’s kind of exciting but there’s no guarantee that there will be a good season for the red and gold this year but whatever they can do it should be interesting. The hiring of Shanahan clearly is one of the best coaches around it was kind of weird what kind of happened in the Super Bowl with that Atlanta Falcons team Shanahan was coaching that fell apart and collapsed.

Super Bowl LI Podcast with David Zizmor: One for the pinkie finger Brady looks for his fifth Super Bowl ring

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady could be the first quarterback to win five Super Bowl rings with one team and the first QB to win five with one team. This is obviously a big deal for the history books. You could debate all you want who the greatest quarterback is. The era has been given to size and the style of play and everything. Brady who had grown up in the Bay Area will be the first to tell you he doesn’t have anything on former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana who has four Super Bowl rings as he’s the quarterback Brady grew up idolizing.

Nonetheless Brady’s a guy whose mentioned in the same breath as Joe Montana at Canton Ohio at the NFL Football Hall of Fame in the future. Brady has four Super Bowls already his legacy is cemented and if he gets a fifth ring he will have accomplished something nobody else has. Again a Super Bowl Ring from one team starting quarterback that’s historical if he can get it done this Sunday in Houston.

San Francisco 49ers Report: 49ers Front Office Starting to Take Shape

KPIX CBS 5 San Francisco still: San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA–The San Francisco 49ers hunt for a new general manager is over. On Sunday, it was reported that they will hire John Lynch. The team confirmed the report on Monday, naming him as the new general manger.

Lynch has never held a front office position in the NFL but does has ties to the Bay Area, playing his college football at Stanford University. The 49ers and CEO, Jed York, don’t view his inexperience as a bad thing, however, as they are willing to take a chance.

Prior to the hiring, Lynch spent his time as a TV Analyst for the NFL on Fox. While at Fox, it was reported that he was one of the most prepared guys in the meeting, something that York later said was beneficial to his hiring.

The search for a new general manager was a long one for the Santa Clara, California-based team as their first round of interviews included nine candidates, none of which were Lynch. After the second round of interviews, candidates, from the Green Bay Packers organization backed out of discussions, due to pay raises. After all this wasted time, the 49ers had to go back to the drawing board and wanted to bring in expected head coach, Kyle Shanahan into the discussion.

Shanahan, who has yet to be named the head coach is still in his role as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in this weekend’s Super Bowl.

Without Shanahan being named coach, it seems like he had a lot to do with the hiring of Lynch. Adam Schefter reported that Lynch reached out to Shanahan to claim interest in the position. Apparently, Shanahan thought there was enough of a fit to suggest the hiring of Lynch.

The 49ers wanted to ensure that the new GM and coach got along after York said in a press conference that there was a lack of communication between Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly multiple times last season.

Since the hire, Lynch has made his first move as the general manager by bringing on Adam Peters as the Vice President of Player Personnel. The former Denver Broncos college scouting director is a great hire for a team that has been abysmal at previous drafts.

San Francisco 49ersReport: 49ers Find Their Coach in Shanahan

USA Today photo: Kyle Shannon with headset will roam the San Francisco 49ers sidelines next season as the team’s head coach according to multiple sources

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA–Multiple reports are coming out that the San Francisco 49ers have found their new head coach, Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan is the son of long-time NFL coach, Mike and has been flying up the football ranks in his young career.

The 37-year old will be taking on his fifth job since 2008, but his first head coaching job, as he has been the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Clevland Browns, and Atlanta Falcons.

Currently, with Atlanta, Shanahan cannot be named the head coach of the 49ers until they are officially eliminated from playoff contention, which could be as soon as Sunday, where the Falcons host the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship. If Atlanta advances to the Super Bowl, San Francisco will need to wait another two weeks to make the announcement.

The decision of Shanahan is a great one, as the young offensive minded coach has enough experience leading to where he has definitely deserved his opportunity. He was the most desired coach available, after Josh McDaniels, who ended up backing out of the 49ers conversation to stay with New England another year.

A lot is going to be expected of Shanahan to turn around this organization that is looking at their fourth coach in four years, but with the right man for the job, the 49ers could finally possibly get something built in Santa Clara, besides their $1 billion stadium.

.Now, while the 49ers have reportedly found their man in Shanahan, they still seek out his boss, the general manager. Once again, York isn’t sticking to his promise of not leading football operations by making this strange move of hiring the coach before the GM, but with the terrible relationship between Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly, he must view this as the only solution.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Lami: Things get weirder in York presser; asked why he won’t step down

foxsports.com photo: San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York addresses the media on Monday morning at Levis Stadium

Joe Lami podcasting from Levi Stadium press conference on Monday Jan 2

SANTA CLARA–A press conference on Monday morning called by San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York addressed questions as to why he fired general manager Trent Baalke and head coach Chip Kelly. York also was asking the media during last season’s ending “State of the Regret” speech about accountability and he asked the media to give him a chance to prove he was accountable but this time he was grilled with questions including why doesn’t he step down after the team finished with a dismal 2-14 record. York himself was asked why not hire someone that knows how to run a football team.

It appears that he’s backing up from any accountability and the media tried to press him on bringing in a new director of operations that would be a good idea and he flat out said that you can’t fire the owner which he is. It seems like the system in place is not a good one. It won’t change because Jed York doesn’t want to lose what control he has. The problem is he’s not a football guy, he doesn’t want to make football decisions but yet he is by being involved in the hiring of the head coach and the general manager.

San Francisco 49ers analysis and commentary with Joe Lami: Change is Not Really Coming to San Francisco

SANTA CLARA, CALIF.–A day after both Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke were relieved of their duties of the San Francisco 49ers, owner Jed York met with the local media. He made it evident that a 2-14 season is not acceptable to anyone in an organization that is so used to winning. He wants to bring back that winning culture, and he plans to be the man to do it.

In the same press conference, York has completely contradicted himself. He noted that he was not involved in any part of the football operations, but also commented he would be the one making the decision of who the next GM or head coach may be. This puts Jed at the very top of football operations, in a role that would be more suited for a President of Football Operations, but he’s not making any football decisions.

The quote of the day was when he stated, and the biggest slap in the face to fans was, “I am own this football team. You don’t dismiss owners”. That may be true Jed, but the point is most owners don’t have the control over the team like you do. They are smart enough or don’t let their egos get bruised if they admit that they don’t know what they’re doing, so they bring in the right people to run the ship.

Everyday Jed York is reminding me more and more of what Al Davis did to the Oakland Raiders in the early 2000s. He had a little bit of success early on and even lost a Super Bowl. But, his downfall came to his ego, believing he knew more about football and how to run a team than anybody else.

Jed York has admitted that he shouldn’t be the one making football decisions, yet doesn’t do anything about it. He will turn to his advisors, who he refused to name drop, yet gave hints as to who they were on this ugly process. But as long as York has the wheel of the ship, the 49ers will not be successful.

It’s time to become the bigger man, step down, and admit you have no clue what you’re doing before your fan base completely abandons you like they should.

49ers competitive in season-ending loss to Seahawks, then part ways with Baalke, Kelly

By Morris Phillips

For the third time in three seasons, the 49ers are starting over.

After an encouragingly competitive performance against the Seahawks, and a franchise-record tying 14th loss on the season, the team announced that general manager Trent Baalke and head coach Chip Kelly had been fired.

While Baalke’s dismissal had been widely anticipated for weeks, Kelly’s status remained uncertain until the reports surfaced the night before the season finale that the coach would be let go in sweeping changes aimed at getting the struggling franchise righted.

“I have informed Trent and Chip of my decision to pursue new leadership for our football team. These types of conversations are never easy, especially when they involve people you respect personally and professionally,” team CEO Jed York said in a statement released after the game.

“Despite my feelings for Trent and Chip, I felt the decision to change our football leadership was absolutely necessary.  The performance of this team has not lived up to my expectations or those of our fans, and that is truly disappointing. Weall expected to see this team progress and develop as the season went on, but unfortunately that did not happen. That is why now is the time to find a new direction for this team.”

Whoever is hired to replace Baalke and Kelly, will enter a situation with as clean as cupboard as can be found in the NFL, and will inevitably ask for as much time as possible to right the ship.  The 49ers could say goodbye to all three quarterbacks currently on the roster, including Sunday’s starter Colin Kaepernick, whose restructured deal gives him a player option that he is likely to decline.

Beyond the quarterback position the most likely players to return with potential of transformative impact are rookie defensive end DeForrest Buckner and possibly behemoth offensive tackle Trent Brown. Tight end Vance McDonald recently signed a contract extension, but missed the team’s final four games due to injury.  Most NFL talent evaluators when asked have pointed to the team’s rosters lack of impact talent, especially at the offensive skill positions.

At the critical linebacker positions, the team will return NaVorro Bowman, whose 2016 season was cut short due to an Achilles rupture, Eli Harold, Aaron Lynch and Tank Carradine. Longtime veteran edge rusher Ahmad Brooks isn’t likely to return.

The team’s secondary could see upheaval as well despite the presence of valued draftees Eric Reid, Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt.

Veteran kicker Phil Dawson said after the game he will take a couple of weeks to determine his future in football.  If the 41-year old Dawson opts to resume his football career, that does not automatically mean that he returns to San Francisco.

Given the lack of talent and uncertainty within the team’s roster, and York’s frequent firings, attracting a top-notch talent evaluating GM and a compatible coach won’t be easy.  The top candidates for those positions–Scott Pioli, Trent Kirchner, Eliot Wolf for general manager, and Kyle Shanahan, Josh McDaniels for head coach–are expected to be in high demand  with at least six teams expected to make similar changes.

Just last off-season, Chip Kelly was hired after several bigger targets turned down the 49ers and York.

In Kelly, the 49ers had a capable coach whose team frequently enjoyed success early in ballgames only to see things stagnate once strategic adjustments were made.  Kelly also had the respect of his players, no small feat, just one year removed from Philadelphia, where the former college coach did not have the respect  of all his players.

On Sunday, the 49ers started fast again, leading 14-3 at one point as Kaepernick completed his first 10 passes and ran for 18 yards on four carries.

Afterwards, several Seahawks’ players admitted that the 49ers’ quick-hitting rushing attack hadn’t shown up on film and initally confused the Seahawks’ defensive front.  But Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said afterwards that a series of adjustments along the Seattle defensive line helped to slow the 49ers, who started Shaun Draughn at running back in place of the injured Carlos Hyde.

After leading 14-3, the 49ers allowed Seattle 16 unanswered points and a 19-14 lead in the third quarter.   Besides a gift safety where Seattle long snapper Nolan Frese snapped the ball over the head and out of reach of punter Jon Ryan, the 49ers were shut down the rest of the way save a Kaepernick touchdown pass to Grant Celek with 5:42 remaining.

With Seattle’s playoff positioning decided as the high-scoring Falcons put the finishing touches on the Saints to claim the NFC’s No. 2 seed, Carroll opted to bench quarterback Russell Wilson and several other starters as a precautionary move. But backup Trevone Boykin came on to convert two, critical third down opportunities and help the Seahawks run out the clock.

Ironically,  with Wilson in the game, the Seahawks failed to convert third downs on nine of ten opportunities.  But with Boykin aboard, the Seahawks converted their last two.

The 25-23 loss was the narrowest of the 49ers’ 14 losses.  As a result of the outcome, and the Browns’ loss earlier to Pittsburgh, the 49ers will pick second in the upcoming spring draft.

Seahawks Will End 49ers 2016 Misery; Baalke and Kelly expected to be fired after game sources say

espn.com photo: San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke are expected to be relieved of their duties right after Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks at Levis Stadium

By: Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers kick off their final game of the horrendous 2016 campaign on Sunday against their division foes, the Seattle Seahawks. It will most likely be the last game where Trent Baalke is the GM of San Francisco, who’s expected to be fired after his drafts have put together a record of 7-24 over the past two season.

Colin Kaepernick is also expected to play his final game in the red and gold. Due to a restructure in his contract, he has the ability to opt out during the offseason to go elsewhere. All indications show that to be the case, as his $3 million San Jose home being put up for sale being the nail in the coffin.

While most of the chatter has been on what might possibly occur on New Years’ Day with the front office, the team still has a game to try and win.

Seattle has already wrapped up the NFC West and are playing for seeding in the playoffs. This means that they won’t hold back against the team that destroyed the San Francisco 37-18 in week three. If Seattle wins and Atlanta is knocked off, the Seahawks will receive a first-round bye. However, if the Niners can pull off the upset, Seattle will drop to the fourth seed.

When Chip Kelly was asked about playing the spoiler role, he said that his team doesn’t look at it that way. They should look at the guys on the other sideline and be pumped up about the competition they’re going against.

The 49ers will be extremely shorthanded once again, as hitting the injury bug has added injury to the insult of this 2016 season. Carlos Hyde, Vance McDonald, Torrey Smith, and Andrew Tiller are all out, with Joe Staley and Rashard Robinson being questionable.

The good news for Niner fans is Sunday will be the end of misery and the team could look forward to their highest draft pick since the 2005 NFL Draft. Once again, the need for the quarterback position is the highest.

NFL podcast with Tony Renteria: 49ers Joe Staley named for Bill Walsh Award; How Raiders will look on defense against the pass

The Oakland Raiders are in Denver this Sunday Tony talks about the preparation the Raiders will need on defense going in against the Denver Broncos. The Raiders with quarterback Derek Carr out of the line up will get a good look at back up quarterback Matt McGloin for a good preview of how McGloin might perform in the post season. How McGloin does against the Broncos will gave Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio a sense of how to prepare McGloin  in a post season game.

The 49ers have five key injuries which include running back Carlos Hyde, wide receiver Torrey Smith as they prepare to face the Seattle Seahawks at Levis in Santa Clara.  The 49ers coming off that one point victory in LA last Saturday are expected to have their hands full Tony says their chances to win that game are slim and none. Could their be some miracle left in them.

The 49ers left tackle Joe Staley was named as the team’s MVP for the 2016 season. The 49ers coaching staff voted Staley the MVP and quarterback Colin Kaepernick was also voted the winner of the Len Eshmont Award. The award is given to the player that best “exemplifies the inspirational and courageous” play.
