San Francisco 49ers podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Job for now is Garoppolo’s; Lance will need accuracy to win job

Trey Lance (5) and Jimmy Garoppolo (10) will be mixing quarterback duties at least for the first game of week 1 in Detroit on Sun Sep 12 against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field (mercurynews file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Jeremiah, How much pressure is on Trey Lance now that he knows he will be rotating at quarterback with starter Jimmy Garoppolo as opening day approaches on Sun Sep 12.

#2 Head coach Kyle Shanahan says that Lance will get plays but he won’t be the starter to begin the regular season.

#3 Garoppolo most likely will be starting and if he is the winning quarterback under center with improved numbers he will remain the starting quarterback.

#4 One of the things that Lance has to do to win the job is he will have to show he’s mobile out of the pocket and that if he goes long he accurate and can set up scoring situations.

#5 Both Garoppolo and Lance had fairly good camps will this be a matter of Lance learning the system and executing it to win the starter job and this more of a quarterback controversy than just trading off mid games?

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Lance out 7 days finger injury; Relief mixing is in the mix for Garoppolo and Lance at quarterback

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance who suffered a micro chip fracture against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sun Aug 29, 2021 will be out for seven days but is expected back for the 49ers opener in Detroit on Sep 12th at Ford Field in Detroit (AP News photo)

#1 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has suffered a chip fracture on his finger after hitting his hand on Las Vegas Raiders defender Max Richardson’s helmet on Sunday and will be sidelined in what is being a call a micro chip bone fracture and should be back by Sep 12th for the 49ers opener in Detroit.

#1 Dave, all the talk has been about week 1 versus the Detroit Lions in Detroit as 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is considering mixing quarterbacks as Jimmy Garoppolo will start and and Trey Lance would be doing work on the mid series.

#2 Dave, with the 49ers mixing series between Garoppolo and Lance is this another strategy to keep opposing defenses off balance because each quarterback has their own individual way of staying in the pocket and running the football?

#4 Dave, talking about the Detroit Lions the oddsmakers have the 49ers picked to run up the score on them, the Lions are coached by Dan Campbell, at right tackle is first round pick Penei Sewell, and former Cal quarterback Jared Goff under center how do you see this first game kicking off?

San Francisco Finishes Off Las Vegas 34-10

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the San Francisco 49ers took on the Las Vegas Raiders in their third and final pre-season game. In this pre-season the 49ers dropped their first to the Kansas City Chiefs in a close contest followed by another close win over the Chargers.

The first quarter of this game was all San Francisco. They took the early lead when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo scored on a one yard rush 7-0. Going into the second quarter the team picked up where they left off in the first quarter.

The 49ers had their second touchdown on a 2 yard rush by, of course, quarterback Trey Lance and the QB shuffle continued to yield some nice benefits.

They now led 14-0. Mid-way through the quarter Las Vegas got on the board via a 51 yard field goal. San Francisco would kick two field goals before the half. A 21 yard and a 19 yard field goal gave the 49ers a 20-3 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was an impressive one for running back JaMycal Hasty. He ran for a 35 yard touchdown and another 3 yard rush for a td giving San Francisco a 34-10 lead. Earlier in the third quarter Las Vegas scored on a pass from Nick Bowers to Nathan Peterman for 16 yards.

Neither team would score in the fourth quarter. The 49ers came away with the 34-10 win as they now prepare for the regular season.

San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo finished 4 of 7 for 64 yards and Trey Lance was 6 of 13 for 46 yards. San Francisco had a great day in the air with 133 passing yards and on the ground as well with 242 rushing yards.

The team will now head to Detroit for their first regular season game on Sunday September 12. They will be taking on former Ram’s quarterback Jared Goff as they prepare to showcase their QB platoon. Kickoff is schedule for 10:00AM. San Francisco is favored to win their first game of the 2021 season 61.3% to 38.4%.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Shanahan going with Jimmy G as starter Sunday vs. Raiders

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be switching off with quarterback Trey Lance during Sun Aug 29, 2021’s game at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara as announced by head coach Kyle Shanahan (file photo from wikipedia.com)

On the 49ers contest with Jeremiah:

#1 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will be going with his starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo will get every opportunity to work his skill set but is this a try out for starter or does Garoppolo have the starting job?

#2 Jeremiah this is not to say that Shanahan wants to get some looks at quarterback Trey Lance who threw for two touchdowns in the last pre season game in Los Angeles against the Chargers.

#3 Shanahan said he will mix Lance in the game on Sunday against the Raiders and most likely will not have Lance doing any rushing just have him stay in the pocket to avoid any injuries.

#4 Last Sunday Garoppolo did play all 15 of his snaps in the opening series of the game and Lance later took over and got the win for the 49ers over the Chargers with the two touchdowns and 15-10 win.

#5 Jeremiah talk about the wide receiver issues, Brandon Aiyuk has a bad hamstring that will keep out of Sunday’s game, Aiyuk according to Shanahan is expected back next week for practice, wide receiver Richie James Jr who is having an MRI. The 49ers are checking to see if he is having a season ending ligament tear.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: No designed running plays for Lance to avoid injuries

Trey Lance the San Francisco 49ers quarterback prepares to let one go threw for two touchdowns on Sun Aug 22, 2021 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood against the Los Angeles Chargers (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 Dave what do you think of the 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan staying on the side of caution not designing any running plays for quarterback Trey Lance in helping him avoid injury.

#2 Lance has carried once and it was on a eight yard play in 63 snaps during pre season after he carried for 1100 yards in 2019 at North Dakota.

#3 The Las Vegas Raiders return to the Bay Area to play the 49ers this Sunday at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara. it’s the last pre season game. Will this last pre season game bring some intensity with the players and fans?

49ers comeback in win over Chargers in second preseason game 15-10; Lance throws for 2 TDs

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) avoids getting taken down by Los Angeles Chargers defensive back Tevaughn Campbell (20) but can’t make the two point conversion in the first half at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood (AP News photo)

~ August 22, 2021

~ INGLEWOOD– San Francisco began and ended with the lead 15-10 in their first visit to SoFi Stadium for Los Angeles´ first official home game with 68,327 attendance.

There were a lot of penalties in the game, 13 for the 49ers and 12 for the Chargers, the first occurring with 14:18 left in the first.

San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo started and stayed in for one drive like last game, because of how long the first drive lasted. He was able to avoid a sack and scramble for 10 yards, but was eventually intercepted by Asante Samuel Jr. The possession took 15 plays and lasted almost seven and a half minutes.

The 49ers got their first safety of the preseason when DL Jordan Willis sacked QB Easton Stick in the end zone with 10:42 left in the second.

With 9:07 left, this time it was the other San Francisco QB Trey Lance who was intercepted and it ended up more costly. The following possession after two penalties by the 49ers, the Chargers got the first touchdown. Stick made a three yard pass to WR Joshua Palmer with 5:49 left.

Los Angeles tacked on a field goal to make it 10-2 with just over a minute left to go in the half. This was thanks to a 39-yard long pass to WR Jalen Guyton near the beginning of the drive and despite offensive holding and intentional grounding penalties to the Chargers. LB Jonas Griffith for the 49ers also had a facemask penalty which offset the loss a bit.

The first half excitement wasn’t over yet though. Off a no huddle 12-yard gain by RB Wayne Gallman II to get to 3rd and 1, the 49ers called a timeout and Lance threw another deep pass to WR Trent Sherfield for the second game in a row, this one for 41 yards.

The Bolts then committed a 5-yard penalty and after another timeout, Lance threw five yards into the end zone to WR Mohamed Sanu Sr. and Lance ran to convert for two more points. Kicker Robbie Gould missed the extra point attempt, bringing the score back to within two.

Los Angeles brought in QB Chase Daniel for the second half.

Lance had his first non-scoring scramble go for eight yards as San Francisco regained the lead on almost a six and a half minute drive, in which they converted from 3rd down three times. Lance threw a 16-yard pass to WR Travis Benjamin with 5:01 left in the third.

Things kept going the 49ers’ way when they got their first interception with 13:13 left in the fourth. Safety Jared Mayden intercepted Daniel and went 54 yards for a score, but DL Shilique Calhoun was called for offensive holding.

The Niners committed a third turnover when new QB Nate Sudfeld fumbled on his second drive of the game and LB Cole Christiansen recovered.

San Francisco and the Chargers punted for the remainder of the game, most three and outs or extended by penalties. Bolts´ Jessie Lemonier committed the last penalty of the game with 1:49 left for roughing the passer.

Regarding the 49ers´ quarterbacks, Garoppolo threw 3 of 6 for 15 passing yards, 10 rushing yards and the one interception. Lance finished 8 of 14 for 102 passing yards, eight rushing yards, two scores, the one interception and was sacked twice. Sudfeld went 3 for 5 for 24 yards. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan remained noncommittal after the game between Garoppolo or Lance starting Week 1.

For the Bolts, Stick went 10 for 14 for 85 yards and one TD. Daniel went 14 of 21 for 60 yards and one interception. The San Francisco defense sacked each of them multiple times, Stick three times and Daniel twice.

Overall the Niners won the yardage game, 281-162. The biggest difference came via rushing, with San Francisco outrunning Los Angeles 148-53.

The Chargers rested all their offensive starters.

Up Next: The Niners play their third and final preseason game versus their former Bay Area rival, the Las Vegas Raiders August 29th at 1pm.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Lance advantage he got looks at Chargers first team defense

San Francisco 49er quarterback Trey Lance (5) on the signal count against the Seattle Seahawks on Sat Aug 14, 2021 at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara (USA Today photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 One thing about last Thursday’s practice at the 49ers camp head coach Kyle Shanahan was going to make sure that he wanted to see quarterback Trey Lance get some more reps which he did as Lance got eight straight plays in against Sunday’s opponent the San Diego Chargers first team.

#2 In the practice Lance completed the three passes one was a shovel pass, he also made a nice slot throw to Mohamed Sanu that Sanu dropped. But coach Shanahan was satisfied with what he saw of Lance.

#3 Shanahan said he will have Lance drill with the starters and the opposition first team and wanted to see what he can do.

#4 Jeremiah, After 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa played last season for the first 11 snaps and was felled by an injury suffering a torn ACL against the New York Jets during week 2 but says. Bosa is leaner and in better shape. 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans said Bosa looks fast and explosive.

#5 Ryans said Bosa’s recovery could make him better than his rookie year in 2019 in last week’s practice he pressured the Chargers quarterbacks. In Bosa’s rookie season in 2019 he had 47 tackles, 9.0 sacks and 25 quarterback hits.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Lance’s 80 yard TD pass is the talk of the town; Garoppolo looked sharp as well

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) is congratulated by offensive tackle 49ers Mike McGlinchey (69) after Lance’s 80 yard pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield during Sat Aug 14, 2021 pre season game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 David, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance’s 80 yard pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield for a touchdown last Saturday is still the topic of discussion while that may not be the clincher for a starting job it was a good initiation in Lance’s first game with the 49ers.

#2 Head coach Kyle Shanahan had a good look at Lance keeping him in for much of the second quarter. Lance threw 5-14 for 128 yards, and one touchdown and stayed in pocket pretty for much for his throws.

#3 Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was also impressive in the short time he saw action going 3-3 for 26 yards no touchdowns. Shanahan like what he saw of Garoppolo as Garoppolo threw with lots of confidence in the first pre season game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance show some elusiveness, Lance went 5-14 for 128 yards and a touchdown. He had some good throws that were dropped by the receivers he could have had eight completions if the receivers had caught the ball.

Lance’s 80 touchdown throw to Trent Sherfield was a good play, Lance’s throw was a dart it had a little wobble to it but it was a good throw. Lance had some great aggressiveness good play calling. Lance pretty played the entire second quarter after quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo quarterbacked one series. For Garoppolo played for ten snaps Garoppolo in his time under center in the game looked good going 3-3 for 26 yards and was able to get the ball out of his hand quickly.

The receiving core there are guys who are trying to make the roster Jauan Jennings had a nice catch on a ball that was throw by quarterback Josh Rosen in the second half the pass was a little high. Jennings one reception and 26 yards in the contest, Wide out Charlie Woerner caught one for 34 yards and didn’t score, and Trent Sherfield one reception and 80 yards and one touchdown.

Chiefs win edge over 49ers in clubs’ first preseason game 19-16

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) threw against the Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Demone Harris (96) at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara on Sat Aug 14, 2021 (AP News photo)

~ August 14, 2021

~ San Francisco almost made a late comeback Saturday, but Kansas City was able to prevail 19-16 with 1:19 left in the contest.

49ers’ rookie quarterback Trey Lance made a splash in his debut, with an 80-yard rocket to wide receiver Trent Sherfield.

Quarterbackwise, the traditional starters, San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo and the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes each played the first drive, followed by Lance and Chad Henne.

The first three drives of the game resulted in punts.

Kansas City got on the board first due to good field position combined with a 13-yard pass interference penalty to Talanoa Hufanga. Henne made a five yard pass to Byron Pringle with 2:57 left in the first.

After an incomplete pass and a seven yard sack in his first drive, Lance followed it up with his 80-yarder score eight seconds later. It stayed 7-6 when kicker Robbie Gould’s extra point hit an upright. Lance finished 5-of-14 for 128 yards and was sacked four times.

The 49ers made it two scoring drives in a row as Deommodore Lenoir intercepted Henne. Robbie Gould helped the cause at the end of the resulting drive with a 36-yard field goal, making it 9-7 with 12:29 left in the second.

Lance made another big play with 9:44 left, throwing 34 yards to Charlie Woerner.

The Chiefs brought in “rookie” undrafted free agent quarterback Anthony Gordon with 7:45 left.

With just under a minute left before halftime, kicker Harrison Butker went for a 62-yard field goal. It would have been a career-best, but fell short.

The 49ers led all halftime stats except for first downs.

Kansas City went up 10-9 after the first drive of the second half. It was the longest drive of the game, lasting 6:14 and culminating with a 52-yard field goal by Butker.

After the opening drives, quarterbacks rookie Shane Buechele and Josh Rosen came in for San Francisco and the Chiefs respectively.

The 49ers had two drives resulting consecutively in an interception and a fumble. The interception came with their closest position of the second half so far when they were on KC’s 19.

Kansas City padded their lead by three with a 46-yard Butker field goal with 4:27 left to go in the game and this sparked two more scores.

Nsimba Webster started San Francisco’s drive with a 43-yard return followed by a 34-yard rush.

With the clock winding down and potential overtime looming, the Chiefs made sure it did not happen and Buchele walked into the endzone for the game’s final points.

The match officially ended on an illegal shift penalty to the 49ers.

Red zone totals were 2-2 for Kansas City and 1-3 for San Francisco.

Up Next: The 49ers will face one of their Southern California counterparts next in the form of the Los Angeles Chargers at the new SoFi Stadium Sunday August 22 at 4:30pm.
