Titans overcome 10-point deficit edge 49ers 20-17

It was a tale straight out of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde novel.

Randy Bullock kicked a 44-yard field goal with four seconds left in the game to help the Tennessee Titans defeat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 on Thursday evening at Nissan Stadium.

San Francisco had its two-game winning streak snapped. They stayed as the sixth seed in the NFC and the second wild card spot.

Tennessee have won two of its past three games and remained in first place in the AFC South with two games remaining.

The 49ers dominated both sides of the ball in the first half as their defense contained the Titans offense. In the second half the tides turned to Tennessee’s favor as wide receiver AJ Brown couldn’t be stopped.

“”I’m frustrated. I think we could’ve won this one,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. “You still have to play good enough on all three phases. We didn’t play good enough on third down and committed two turnovers and they had zero.”

San Francisco (8-6) scored on its opening drive. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo led the offense on a nine-play drive totaling 75 yards that was capped off with a Jeff Wilson Jr one-yard rushing touchdown. Garoppolo was 5-5 for 59 yards.

Tennessee’s (9-5) Jackrabbit Jenkins intercepted Garoppolo inside the endzone to stall the 49ers second drive.

The 49ers went up 10-0 on a Robbie Gould 48-yard field goal on its third possession. The 11-play drive featured Garoppolo overthrowing a wide-open Kyle Juszczyk along the right sidelines, a fourth and one conversion by Deebo Samuel and a face mask penalty on Trent Williams which took San Francisco out of the red zone.

The Titans offense had no answer for the Niners defensive front in the first half as they managed just three first downs (compared to 13 for San Francisco) on its four offensive possessions of the half. San Francisco’s defense had four tackles for loss.

Tennessee came out to start the second half with a 13-play 55-yard drive that resulted in a Randy Bullock 38-yard field goal. The drive featured three third and down and long conversions by quarterback Ryan Tannehill to AJ Brown and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.

The 49ers offense gifted the Titans the ball on their first possession of the second half. Garoppolo threw his second interception when Amani Hooker picked off the ball and returned it to the 49ers 18-yard line.

The Titans took advantage as D’Onta Foreman rushed in for a three-yard touchdown on the fourth play of the drive to even the game at 10-10.

Tennessee’s defense forced a turnover on down when they stopped San Francisco’s attempt on a fourth and six from the Titans 40-yard line to keep the momentum on their side.

The Titans took its first lead of the game to open the fourth quarter when Tannehill connected with Brown for an 18-yard touchdown reception to complete a seven play 59-yard drive.

Brown, who played in his first game since suffering a chest injury back in Week 11, went off in the second half as the Niners defense played a soft zone and allowed him lots of room to jump start Tennessee’s offense which was dormant for the first 30 minutes. He finished with 11 catches for 145 yards and one touchdown.

Garoppolo, who had his own version of Jekyll and Hyde, redeemed himself when he led an eight play 95-yard drive in just under three minutes. The key play of the drive was a 56-yard reception to Samuel that set up San Francisco at the Titans five-yard line. The drive was capped off with a two-yard pass to Brandon Aiyuk to even the score at 17-17.

Garoppolo finished the game 26 of 35 for 322 yards and one touchdown and the two glaring interceptions. Samuel led the 49ers in receiving with nine catches for 159 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed 32 yards on the ground in five carries.

Tight end Geroge Kittle had a quiet game after three excellent games with only two catches for 21 yards on just three targets.

“Our best players didn’t play their best game…Deebo obviously played really well,” Kittle said.

Tennessee limited San Francisco to 83 rushing yards as their front seven dominated the trenches in the second half.

Tannehill finished 22 of 29 for 209 yards and one touchdown. He was 10 of 13 for just 40 yards in the first half but went 12 of 26 for 169 yards in the second half. His 23-yard scramble to the Niners 31-yard line set up Bullock’s game winning heroics.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 3-for-8 on third down conversions. Tennessee was 9-for-16.

#1 The San Francisco 49ers (8-6-0) don’t have much time to exhale after their 31-13 crushing of the Atlanta Falcons (6-8-0) at Levi Stadium last Sunday as they will have a short turnaround and draw down on the Tennessee Titans (9-5-0) on Thursday Night Football.

#2 Talking about last Sunday’s thriller at Levi Stadium the 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo got plenty of time to throw 18-23, 235 yards passing and one touchdown.

#3 The 49ers scored two touchdowns in each of the second and third quarters that help pad the scoring against the Falcons on Sunday a great showing of offense or what they did is the real deal and will be a force against the Titans on Thursday Night Football.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — These are the games you’re supposed to win if you want to be playoff contender.

The San Francisco 49ers took care of business in a 31-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons (6-8) on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco has won two games in a row as they continue their playoff push for in the NFC playoff race. They are currently the sixth seed in the NFC and in the second wild card position. Atlanta has lost two of its past three games.

It was a start JaMycal Hasty would soon like to forget as he fumbled the opening kickoff that was recovered by the Falcons at the 49ers 14-yard line.

San Francisco’s (8-6) stout defense let Hasty off the hook as they made a goal line stand on a fourth and goal from their own one-yard line when Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan threw incomplete to Kyle Pitts.

“I thought our defense played really well in the first half,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanhan. “The two drives before our final drive, I think we went three and out on both. We needed to stay on the field and finish them right there. (Our) D came up huge with those four down stops which made us survive it.”

After a 48-yard field goal by Yonghoe Koo the 49ers offense revved up the engine on their second offensive possession. They drove down 79 yards on 11 plays which resulted in a 30-yard field goal by Robbie Gould. The drive was set up with receptions of 25 and 28 yards to tight end George Kittle from Jimmy Garoppolo.

San Francisco went up 10-3 on its third possession. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk rumbled in for a six-yard touchdown run to complete an eight play 77-yard drive. Brandon Aiyuk contributed a 36-yard reception and Jeff Wilson Jr. had a 17-yard rush to help set up Juszczyk’s first rushing TD of the season.

Atlanta (6-8) responded with an eight play 65-yard drive of their own capped off with a 20-yard touchdown from Ryan to wide receiver Russell Gage who leaped high up in the air over Aubrey Thomas for the reception. The drive was aided on a controversial roughing the passer penalty on Arden Key, who had sacked Ryan one play earlier.

Garoppolo marched the 49ers down the field on just six plays and 75 yards in 3:27 that resulted in a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Deebo Samuel to close out the half. Samuel had a 30-yard reception to open the drive.

Samuel now has seven rushing touchdowns on the season, compared to his five receiving touchdowns.

“I just saw it on the install,” Samuel said regarding his new hybrid role on offense. “He (Shanahan) knows my mindset when it comes to just playing the game. I’m never going to shy away from any contact or shy away from anything that they ask me to do.”

San Francisco made the second half a living nightmare for Ryan and the Falcons offense.

Ryan was sacked in back-to-back plays in their opening drive of the second half. The second sack resulted in a fumble by Ryan with Fred Warner recovering for the 49ers.

“Our pass rush is coming alive and they’re coming alive when we needed them to,” said 49ers linebacker Fred Warner. “They’re the ones who start it, penetrating on first and second down so they can earn the right to rush on third down.”

San Francisco only needed four plays to make the Falcons pay for their miscue as Wilson Jr. rushed for a five-yard touchdown to increase the Niners lead to 24-10.

“Our guys were locked in today,” Garoppolo said. “It was a big game. NFC opponent, playoff picture and everything like that. It’s December football. We knew what we were in for.”

It was Wilson’s first rushing touchdown of the season as he made his second consecutive start for the injured Elijah Mitchell.

Atlanta drove 71 yards on nine plays capped off with a 22-yard field goal by Koo.

The 49ers put the game away with another quick drive. They went 75 yards on five plays when Garoppolo completed a four-yard touchdown reception to Jauan Jennings with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter.

San Francisco’s defense held the fort late in the fourth quarter as they stopped back-to-back drives by Atlanta’s offense forcing the Falcons to turn the ball over downs icing the game for the 49ers.

Ryan, who was under duress for the majority of the game, finished 19 of 32 for 236 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions with a QB rating of 92.7. Gage led Atlanta in receiving with eight catches for 91 yards and one touchdown.

San Francisco rushed for 162 yards while holding Atlanta to just 62 yards as both the offensive and defensive lines for the 49ers dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Atlanta’s playoff push took a severe blow, but the team is not ready to concede their season with three games left in the season.

“We know nothing is set in stone,” Gage said. “You know we have three games left, anything can happen. The season has been crazy as we’ve all seen. So we’re gonna go out here and try to find a way to win these last three (games).”

Garoppolo finished 18 of 23 for 235 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions and a QB rating of 126.1. Wilson Jr. led all rushers with 110 yards on 21 carries. Kittle led the 49ers in receiving with six catches for 93 yards.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 6-for-11 on third down conversions. Atlanta was 5-for-13.

#5 Kickoff is at 1:25pm today at Levi Stadium between the Falcons and 49ers, the Falcons have been playing .500 ball winning four of their last eight games, defeating the Carolina Panthers (5-8) last Sunday 29-21. The 49ers are coming off a three point win against the Cincinnati Bengals (7-6) 26-23 last Sunday. Joe what’s your prediction for today’s game.

49ers blow big lead, save face in 26-23 OT win over Bengals

They don’t always have to look pretty to count in the standings.

The San Francisco 49ers blew a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter but rebounded to win 26-23 in overtime over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon at Paul Brown Stadium.

San Francisco has won four of its past five games and currently sit in the sixth place and the second wild card spot in the NFC. In losing their two out of their past three games, Cincinnati have dropped from sixth to ninth in the AFC.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw an out route to Brandon Aiyuk from 11 yards out with two minutes left in overtime as Aiyuk dived for the pylon as he was pushed out of bounds. After a replay review, it was determined Aiyuk crossed the plain of the goal line for the game winning touchdown.

“It was a dog fight that whole game,” said Garoppolo. “Guys were battling, we knew it was going to be a 60-minute game, a little extra in this case, it was everything that we could’ve asked for. It was a fun night.”

Cincinnati (7-6) were able to force on what looked to have been an unforeseeable overtime on two fourth quarter touchdown drives from quarterback Joe Burrow.

Burrow found Jamar Chase in the back of the endzone after the pocket collapsed and Burrow scrambled to his right throwing off his back foot. Niners saftey Jaquiski Tartt lost sight of Chase who kept his balance for his ninth touchdown reception of the season.

Cincinnati went on a seven play, 87-yard drive capped off when Burrow took advantage of one-on-one coverage and threw a 32-yard touchdown reception to Chase who beat rookie cornerback Ambry Thomas for his second touchdown of the game and his team leading 10th of the season.

The Bengals won the coin toss and received the ball first in overtime. Burrow was able to lead them down the field for an Evan McPherson 41-yard field goal to go up 23-20 with 6:15 remaining in the extra session.

The 49ers were without rookie running back Elijah Mitchell who was inactive with an injury. They did however get wide receiver Deebo Samuel back from his injury.

San Francisco was in control of the game for the first three quarters of the game as they were up 20-6 as they entered the fourth quarter.

After a first quarter that saw each team exchange field goals, the 49ers offense began to click in the second quarter.

San Francisco (7-6) went on a six-play, 75-yard drive that was capped off by a 27-yard end around rushing touchdown by Samuel to go up 10-3 early in the second quarter.

Samuel, the hybrid wide receiver and running back, has six rushing touchdowns on the season compared to just five receiving touchdowns.

The 49ers were the recipient of two muffed punts by Darius Phillips in the first half. They converted both turnovers into touchdown drives.

The second happened with 56 seconds left in the half. Garpollo needed just four plays and 39 seconds to cash in when he found tight end George Kittle for a 14-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left.

Kittle had arguably his best game in a 49er’s uniforms. His stat line was impressive as led all receivers with 15 catches for 151 yards and one touchdown. However, the majority of his catches were made in clutch situations and ability to make tough catches look easy were critical in keeping drives alive for San Francisco.

On a third and 10 with under a minute remaining in regulation, Kittle reached up to the heavens to pull down a high pass from Garoppolo to the Bengals 29-yard line setting up kicker Robbie Gould’s potential winning 47-yard field goal that Gould ended up missing, setting up the overtime.

In the overtime, Kittle had three catches to convert three third down conversions, something the 49ers struggled with throughout the game, to help set up Aiyuk’s heroics at the end.

“Jimmy made some plays there at the end that I thought were huge,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. I think we’re a hard team to beat when we don’t turn it over. Kittle was huge. He made some really big plays on that last drive.”

San Francisco’s defense kept pressure on Burrow as they sacked him four times and forced the Benglas into field goals instead of touchdowns when Cincinnati was inside the red zone.

Cincinnati was able to sack Garoppolo five times as their front four did a great job collapsing the pocket and leaving Garoppolo with nowhere to go.

Garoppolo finished 27 of 41 for 296 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions to go along with a 103.3 QB rating. Jeff Wilson Jr., who replaced Mitchell in the starting lineup, rushed for 56 yards on 13 carries. Samuel finished 37 yards on eight carries.

Burrow went 25 of 34 for 348 yards with two touchdowns, no interceptions with a 125.6 rating. Tee Higgins led the Bengals in receiving with five catches for 114 yards. Joe Mixon had just 58 yards on 18 carries as the Niners defense kept him at bay for the majority of the game.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 5-for-15 on third down conversions. Cincinnati was 4-for-13.

Shanahan mentioned after the game that Dontae Johnson’s mother Holly Garner had a heart attack and passed away this morning in explaining Jonhson’s absence from the team today.

#4 The Bengals have won five out of their last eight games most recently taking a 41-22 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers (7-5). #5 Last week Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow threw for 300 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. How do you see the 49ers defending against Burrow and his passing game today.

Seahawks defensive stand hold off 49ers 30-23

Lumen Field continued to be a house of horrors for the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seattle Seahawks made one final defensive stand to hold on for a 30-23 victory over their NFC West rival on Sunday afternoon

San Francisco had its three-game winning streak snapped as the fell to .500 and to the seventh and final playoff spot in the NFC with five games left. Seattle, playing the spoiler role for the first time in a long time, ended their three-game losing streak and have won four in a row against the 49ers.

The game got off to a scary start when 49ers special teams player Trenton Cannon was injured on the opening kickoff. He was left the field in an ambulance as he was taken to the hospital for a concussion injury.

Seattle (4-8) drew first blood catching the 49ers off guard on a fake punt. Travis Homer took the direct snap and rushed around the left side for 73 yards for his first rushing touchdown of the season after the Seahwaks first possession went three and out.

San Francisco’s defense responded when DJ Jones stripped Gerald Everette on a reception and Emanuel Moseley recovered the ball.

The 49ers (6-6) offense didn’t waste time answering back on the first play. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw a strike to tight end George Kittle alone in the endzone for a 24-yard touchdown reception to even the score at 7-7.

San Francisco took advantage of a missed 56-yard field by Jason Myers. Garoppolo led a scored on nine play 54-yard drive that was set up by a 28 yard reception by Kittle at the Seattle eight yard line. Two players later rookie running back Elijah Mitchell rushed in for a two-yard touchdown with 1:32 left in the first quarter.

After a Robbie Gould 50-yard field goal, Seattle responded with a nine play 63-yard play drive that was capped off by Adrian Peterson’s two-yard touchdown run. Peterson was signed by Seattle over on Friday as their backfield has been ravaged by injuries.

Peterson’s 126 touchdowns passed Walter Peyton and tied Jim Brown for 10th place on the NFL’s all-time list.

The Niners answered back with its third touchdown of the first half. Garoppolo found Kittle along the left side and the Pro-Bowl tight end did his best tightrope walker impression staying in bounds tip-toeing down the sideline for his second touchdown of the game, a 48-yard reception to give San Francisco a 23-14 lead with 3:47 left in the half after Gould missed the extra point.

Seattle cut the lead two points right before the half ended with an eight play 65-yard drive in just 1:36. Their drive was aided by two roughing the passer calls by the 49ers that kept the drive alive. Seahawks quarterback Russel Wilson capped off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown reception to D’Wayne Eskridge. It was Eskridge’s first career NFL touchdown.

The second half saw the 49ers shooting themselves in the foot as they were shutout in the final 30 minutes of the game thanks to a combination of turnovers and the Seahawks defense playing its best half of the season.

Travis Benjamin fumbled the opening second half kickoff. However the Niners defense forced Wilson into an interception at their own goal line when K’Waun Williams picked off the ball after a deflection off the hands of Everette.

Seattle gained the momentum when it sacked Garoppolo for a safety by Carlos Dunlap early in the third quarter to tie the game at 23-23.

It got worse for the 49ers when Garoppolo threw his second interception of the game when he overthrew a pass attempted for Kittle that went into the hands of Quandre Diggs who returned the ball the Niner’s 28-yard line.

The Seahawks made the Niners pay five plays later when Wilson connected with wide receiver Tyler Lockett with a 12 yard touchdown reception for Seattle’s first lead of the game with 2:28 left in the third quarter.

Seattle tried to put the game away with under three minutes remaining with the ball at the Niners two-yard line. However, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair knocked the ball away from Everette on a shovel pass attempt. Dontae Johnson recovered the ball at the two-yard line to give San Francisco one last chance to even the score.

Garoppolo drove the 49ers down to Seattle’s three-yard line. But the drive ended in frustration after Garopollo’s pass on fourth and goal was tipped at the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over on downs with 18 seconds left.

Kittle finished the game with his best performance of the season with nine catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns. San Francisco needed every yard from Kittle as they were without the services of their number offensive weapon Deebo Samuel, who was inactive with a groin injury.

Garoppolo went 20 of 30 for 299 yards with two touchdowns but his performance was overshadowed by his two interceptions.

Wilson, who had a difficult first half, rebounded in the second half to finish 30 of 37 for 231 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Lockett led Seattle in receiving with seven catches for 68 yards and his touchdown which proved to be the game winner.

Both defenses played well against the run. Seattle had the 49ers to 71 yards on the ground, while San Francisco, with the exception of the fake punt rush by Homer, held the Seahawks to just 73 yards rushing.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 3-for-10 on third down conversions. Seattle was 5-for-10.
