Lance breaks ankle out for the season, Garoppolo and defense impress in 49ers 27-7 win over Seahawks

SANTA CLARA — There’s bittersweet wins and there’s what happened to Tre Lance.

The San Francisco 49ers second year quarterback suffered a broken ankle running the ball during the second offensive series in the first quarter as the defense carried the team to a 27-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

On a 2nd and 8 from the Seahawks 21-yard line, Lance ran up the right side on a designed run play called by 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and was tackled by Seahawks linebacker Cody Barton. Lance laid on the field for a while before finally being carted off the field ending his day. Lance will have surgery to repair his ankle.

“You don’t have time to sit there and think about it, you have to get (your head) back into the game,” said Shanahan regarding the emotions of having Lance get injured. “I thought the guys did a real good job of that. We’re happy about the win, but it was a little sombering once you get in the locker room and see him (Lance) and stuff.”

Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo came in and filled in nicely as he did what he does best, act as a game manager for San Francisco. Garoppolo connected on a 38-yard touchdown reception to backup tight end Ross Dwelley on his second possession to put San Francisco up 13-0 early in the second quarter.

The 49ers (1-1) defense might have been the secondary story of the afternoon, but they were the key to the team’s victory. They pressured Seattle’s quarterback Geno Smith relentlessly throughout the game and made him uncomfortable in the pocket.

Defensive end Nick Bosa sacked Smith twice and the Niners secondary intercepted him twice, one by Charvarius Ward and one by Taushan Gipson. Strong safety Talanoa Hufunga had another strapping game as he helped contain Seattle’s receivers from making big plays.

“Honestly, I really believe that we just didn’t do what we needed to today. I just think we made some mistakes that we couldn’t recover from,” Smith said.

San Francisco’s defense held Seattle to just 36 yards rushing on the day. They made sure they didn’t have a second half letdown to allow Seattle back in the game like they did last week against Chicago.

“Last week we let them back in the game, being up 10-0. Our mindset is, the offense scores, that’s enough points for us to win the game. So we knew we wanted to play a full four quarter game and I think we did that,” said 49ers linebacker Fred Warner.

Lance’s teammates are going to miss having him around in the locker room the rest of this season.

“Unfortunate events for Tre (Lance). That’s my man. I’ve really been praying for him. (I am) very grateful the energy he has brought into this locker room. We were the youngest on the team last year so we understand what it means to really play at this level. For him, I’m just trying to keep his spirits up and continue to go down this journey. It’s going to be a lot of adversity he’s going to face, but he’s strong enough to handle it,” Hufanga said.

Garoppolo looked rusty at times underthrowing a few balls and also looked like the quarterback the led San Francisco to the NFC Championship last year with precision throws to his receivers.

“Just like riding a bike,” Garoppolo said when asked how he felt in his first game action of the season. “It felt good to be back out there. I feel terrible for Tre (Lance). I’ve been on the side of it. This league is tough. That sucks for him, feel bad for him but he’s our brother and we’ll pick him up.”

Garopollo finished 13 of 21 for 154 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. He also had a one-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter to seal the win for San Francisco.

“I thought he did a real good job coming off the bench. (He) made some key throws. Real proud of Jimmy (Garoppolo) with how he came in and (was) ready for the moment. Helped us get a win. He looks good, still handsome,” said Shanahan.

Seattle (1-1) could not generate any scoring offensively but its special teams were responsible for its only points in the game. Tariq Woolen blocked a 25-yard field goal attempt by Robbie Gould late in third quarter. Michael Jackson scooped up the ball and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown.

“We manned up for a while and then at the end of the game, those guys just toughed it out and they (49ers) played good today. So, credit to them for coming in with a plan and sticking to their plan,”said Seahawks free safety Quandre Diggs.

Jeff Wilson Jr led San Francisco in rushing with 84 yards on 18 carries. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk chipped in with a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Brandon Aiyuk led the 49ers in receiving with five catches for 63 yards. Deebo Samuel contributed five catches for 44 yards.

Smith finished 24 of 30 for 197 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Tyler Lockett led all receivers with nine catches for 107 yards in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 6-for-15 on third down conversions. Seattle was 2-for-7.

San Francisco had 373 total yards of offense compares to Seattle’s 216.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: How big a hole does Kittle’s absence create for today’s game against Seattle

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle runs for it against the Houston Texans during Jan 2, 2022 game at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. Kittle is unlikely to be in the line up for today’s home opener against the Seattle Seahawks. (AP News file photo)

On the SF 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, just how much of a hole does it create for the 49ers facing the Seattle Seahawks in today’s home opener with tight end George Kittle out of the line up.

#2 Kittle was listed as questionable but most likely will not make his 2022 appearance as he’s been out with a groin injury he suffered in practice back on Sep 5.

#3 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Kittle looked “awesome” during half speed sessions. Rain is in the forecast for today’s game in Santa Clara but Shanahan said that the wet weather did not play a role in whether or not Kittle will play.

#4 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster said that the Seahawks defensive line have “really, really big guys” Foerster said that when he reviews video of their defense they take up a lot of the space on the frame. Joe would you say the key reason the Hawks were able to edge the Denver Broncos last week was because they do have a big sized line?

#5 The 49ers this week were able to sign punter Mitch Wishnowsky 30 to a four year extension that would have him playing in Santa Clara through the 2026 season. Wishnowsky was 22nd in punting in the NFL with 45 yards.

On the 49ers podcast with Marko:

#1 Marko, 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has rushed into the 49ers record book for the most carries by a quarterback with 16 in team history.

#2 Was the playbook designed for Lance to carry so much will that be the norm for him this season to carry the ball over a minimum of ten carries per game?

#3 San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has only caught one of Lance’s 54 career completed passes. Chances are Kittle won’t be catching any of Lance’s passes this Sunday at Levi Stadium as he’s Kittle remains a question for this Sunday.

#4 Kittle has missed practice and has been out due to a groin injury he got on September 5th. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said he’s hopeful he could play but wasn’t all that sure.

#1 If it wasn’t rough enough for Elijah Mitchell missing all of pre season from a hamstring injury after getting a dose of the rough and tumble Chicago Bears Mitchell has injuries to his shoulder, ribs, head, fingers, and a sprained MCL to his right knee and is expected to miss two months.

#2 Dave, 49ers quarterback Trey Lance had a couple of good passes early in the game against Chicago but he looked like he did disappear in the second half. Was it a matter of the Bears keeping him on the run or he just couldn’t manage finding his targets and the Bears read the running backs well?

#3 The Seattle Seahawks will be on hand for the home opener at Levi Stadium against the 49ers. The Seahawks just edged their old teammate quarterback Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos at Lumen Stadium in Seattle last Sunday 17-16. How do you see this match with the 49ers and Seahawks for this Sunday.

Braves three run third inning does in Giants in 5-1 loss

Atlanta (88-54). 5. 10. 0

San Francisco (68-74). 1. 4. 0

Tuesday, September 13, 2022

By Lewis Rubman

SAN FRANCISCO–Bay area sports pages and talk shows, when they’re not going on about football and other usurpers of the headlines of September, are full of post mortems for the Giants and Athletics’ autumn hopes.

Since the Giants’ 5-1 defeat by the Atlanta Braves tonight isn’t going to change the fact that the team is, for 2022, dead in the water, I thought I’d bring up one possible cause of the team’s demise before going on to what seemed to me the significant details of tonight’s encounter.

Every so often, the Giants send their fans a survey in which they ask questions like what makes you want to attend Giant games and then give a list of possible answers that the fans are supposed to rank.

In the last one I saw, which was less than a month ago, “because I like baseball” wasn’t one of the options. Now, I understand that baseball is a business and its owners want to put people in the seats (and in front of their screens).

I don’t want to imply that the Giants are indifferent to the team’s inadequate performance this year, but I think the absence of the baseball option says something important-and negative-about the attitude of the San Francisco ownership and, indeed, of the monopoly that is Major League Baseball, Inc.

The Baseball Operations staff was, in fact, busy before this evening’s game began. They recalled southpaw reliever Thoma Sszapucki from Sacramento and optioned right handed ditto Zack Litell to the River Cats

Tuesday game wrap: In tonight’s entertainment, the 87-54 Atlanta Braves sent right hander Kyle Wright (17-5, 3.23) against the woebegone 68-73 Giants. That’s the same Kyle Wright who, in his last start, a week ago today, went into his game against the even more woebegone Oakland Athletics with an ERA of 2.85).

The Bay Area treated Wright more kindly tonight. He went 5-1/3 innings and surrendered one run, earned, on three hits, three walks, and a wild pitch. He threw an even 100 pitches, 42 of which were balls. He earned his 18th win and brought his ERA down to 3.18.

Jakob Junis, coming to the mound at 4-5, 3.98, made his 16th start of the season and first ever against Atlanta.

The slider-sinker artist pitched better than his numbers indicated but still not very well. A few plays that were ruled hits-and, according to the not always fair rule book, those rulings were correct-were just bad breaks.

Junis went four plus innings and allowed four runs, all technically earned, on seven hits, one of which left the park, and a walk. He had five strikeouts and threw 92 pitches, 60 for strikes. He took the loss, his sixth against four wins and saw his ERA rise to 4.15.

The Giants touched Wright for a run right away. Mike Yastrzemski dropped a dying quail to left that got past Eddie Rosario for a one out double in the first. After Evan Longoria took a called third strike, Yaz took second on a wild pitch with Joc Pederson at the plate. Pederson’s single to right drove in Yastrzemski for the initial tally.

The Braves evened it up in their next at bat. Michael Harris II split the difference between Pederson and Yazk to bounce a two bagger off the Game Up sign in left center. He moved up 90 feet on Rosario’s single to center and scored when Robie Grossman beat out second sacker Thairo Estrada’s relay from Brandon Crawford on a missed double play opportunity.

They missed an offensive opportunity when a pair of walks and a single by Joey Bart enabled San Francisco to load the bases with two down in the second.Yastrzemski’s fly to the warning track in left ended that threat.

In the third frame, Dansby Swanson’s fly to left, to just about the same spot as Yaz’s, went a little further and cleared the fence, landing 385 feet into the bleachers with Acuña, who had led off with a single, on base.

That put the Braves ahead 3-1. Two outs later, Travis D’Arnaud whacked a line drive that glanced off González’s glove in right. It was ruled a hit because González had lost it in the lights. Harris singled to center to bring in D’Arnaud with Atlanta’s fourth run of the fray.

When Crawford, attempting a backhanded catch, bobbled D’Arnaud’s lead off grounder to short in the sixth, Kapler, Bailey, & Co., removed Junis and replaced him with portsider Jarlín García.

Wright struck out Longoria with a curve to open the home sixth. It was his 100th and last pitch of the night. His replacement, southpaw AJ Minter, retired David Villar, pinch hitting for Pederson, on a fly that drove Rosario to the left field wall and a strike out of Crawford.

Cole Waites made his major league debut, coming in to pitch the top of the seventh. He had a rocky time of it. He walked the first batter he faced, Ehire Adrianza, on four pitches and then surrendered a double to Acuña, putting runners on second and third.

The rookie showed he had heart and talent. Adrianza held third when Swanson bounded out , Crawford to Villar at first. Austin Riley followed with a grounder to Villar, who threw Adrianza out at home, while Acuña stayed put at second. The powerful Matt Olson flew out to left to end Waites’ scoreless baptism of fire.

Minter remained in the game long enough to strike out Estrada and walk Wilmer Flores, batting for DH Willie Calhoun, in the home seventh. When JD Davis was announced as pinch hitter for González, Collin McHugh took over pitching duties for the visitors.

(Go your left, your right, your left). He walked Davis on a full count, putting the potential tying run at the plate in the person of the resurgent Joey Bart. He slashed a vicious one hop line drive to Adrianza at second, who converted it into a rally killing 4-6-3 double play.

Luis Ortiz, San Francisco’s fourth pitcher of the night, allowed a leadoff single off the left field wall to lead off the top of the eighth. He was erased on a 4-6-3 pitcher’s best friend before Rosario flew out to the center field. warning track.

Raisel Iglesias was Atlanta’s setup man for the eighth. He set the Giants down to a conga beat.

Ortiz came out for the ninth and gave up the bull pen’s only run of the night. A walk to Adrianza, who advanced to second on Acuña’s ground out to the mound and scored on Swanson’s single to left made it 5-2 when Kenley Jansen came in to close it out for Atlanta in the bottom of the ninth.

Wednesday at 12:45 Charlie Morton (8-5. 4.08) will toe the rubber for the Braves, facing the Giants’ Carlos Rodón (12-8, 2.93) to conclude the three game series.

49ers stumble to Bears 19-10 in wet, dreary game

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) is outnumbered and tackled in first half action by the Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith (58) and defensive lineman Dominique Robinson (91) at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sun Sep 11, 2022 (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

A monsoon of mother nature and a tight lipped defense spoiled the season opener for the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chicago Bears took advantage of the weather and costly turnovers as they upset the the scarlet and gold 19-10 on a miserable wet Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.

On a day where the heavens opened up and were relentless, the field made things difficult for both teams dealing with a drenched field. Penalties and turnovers were detrimental to San Francisco’s ability to overcome the weather.

San Francisco’s defense was dominant in the first half as they forced Justin Fields and the Bears offense into numerous three and outs.

Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Fields on the Bears second possession as he read the deep ball over the middle where Fields overthrew his receiver.

The 49ers (0-1) drew first blood in the second quarter. Hybrid receiver-back Deebo Samuel concluded a seven play, 52-yard drive when he rushed for a six-yards touchdown on an end around handoff from quarterback Tre Lance.

Samuel had fumbled the ball on the 49ers first drive that was the beginning of the missed opportunities San Francisco experienced throughout the game.

Chicago (1-0) tried for a field goal just before halftime but were flagged when they used a towel on the field to try sop up some of the water, which is illegal to do. The 15-yard penalty took them out of field goal range and then ended up punting to end the half.

San Francisco started the second half off with a promising drive. However, it stalled at the Bears 18-yard line as Lance was sacked on third down and they had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Robbie Gould instead of being able to double its lead.

“You don’t win a lot of games when you miss those opportunities to put a game away. Not to take anything away from them (Chicago), I’m disappointed in some of the silly mistakes we did to ourselves,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game.

The second half was a flip of the script. Chicago’s defense became the dominating force and didn’t allow San Francisco to score the rest of the game.

The Bears’ offense came alive late in the third quarter. Fields made a play where he scrambled out of the pocket to the right then to the left before finding a wide open Dante Pettis down the right sideline. Pettis raced in the rest of the way for a 51-yard touchdown reception to cut the lead to 10-7.

Chicago gained its first lead early in the fourth quarters. Fields led a 10 play 84-yard drive when he found Equanimeous St. Brown for an 18-yard touchdown with 12:45 remaining. Kicker Cairo Santos missed the extra point as the Bears led 13-10.

Lance was intercepted by Eddie Jackson on the next 49ers’ possession when he telegraphed a pass over the middle intended for Jauan Jennnings. Jackson returned the ball 26 yards to the 49ers 21 yard line.

Chicago cashed in the turnover when Khalil Herbert rushed for a three-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach despite Santos second missed extra point.

“Whenever you let a team hang around, it’s not gonna be good,” offensive tackle Trent Williams said.

It was a difficult game for Lance, who finished 13 of 28 for 164 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Lance led the team in rushing with 54 yards on 13 carries. His best carry was on a 3rd and 13 where he rushed for 13 yards to get the first down.

Jennings led San Francisco in receiving with four catches for 62 yards. Both Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk only had two catches a piece respectively.

Field finished the game 8 of 17 for 121 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 28 yards on the ground.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 8-for-17 on third down conversions. Chicago was 5-for-14.

INJURY UPDATE: San Francisco suffered two keys injuries during the game. Running back Elijah Mitchell left the game in the first half with a knee injury. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter and also didn’t return. Both player will be evaluated on Monday.

UP NEXT: San Francisco returns to Santa Clara for their home opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday 9/18 at 1:05pm at Levi’s Stadium.
