49ers Electrocuted by Chargers, 23-12, After Shipping Trey Lance to Dallas

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is seen here throwing against the Denver Broncos on Sat Aug 19, 2023 what would be his last game with the 49ers as he was traded on Fri Aug 25, 2023 to the Dallas Cowboys. SANTA CLARA–The San Francisco 49ers (1-2) closed out the preseason with a loss to their downstate foe, Los Angeles Chargers (2-1) – after making an earlier major roster move – Friday Night in the Silicon Valley.

Brock Purdy marched his 49ers down the field on their first drive, only to have it come up empty after running back Jordan Mason fumbled into the endzone for a touchback for LA.

Drive #2 for San Francisco was a little better, as Purdy took it in for himself, scoring a five yard TD. 6-0 SF, after a missed extra point attempt. The 49ers used Purdy and two other starters for two drives.

The Chargers answered back with a 75-yard touchdown run for running back Joshua Kelley. 7-6, LA after a successful extra point, and the score stood up after the first 15 minutes. The Chargers were using second and third string players.

The second quarter didn’t have much scoring, except a 24-yard Field Goal by Chargers’ kicker Cameron Dicker. 10-6 LA, then and at the half’.

In the third, Niners’ QB Sam Darnold tossed a six-yard TD to Willie Snead IV.. After a missed two-point conversion, San Francisco led by two, 12-10.

LA’s QB, Max Duggan gave his team the lead right back with his 3-yard TD pass to Hunter Kampmoyer. 17-12, Chargers.

The Chargers followed that up with a 35-yard FG by Dicker. 20-12 LAC. That was also the score after three quarters.

The Chargers added another field goal in the fourth on the foot of Dustin Hopkins (27), and the Southern California team won by 11, 23-12.

The Niners open the 2023 Season in the Steel City to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, September 10. The Chargers will host the Miami Dolphins on the same date.

The 49ers also dealt quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys. Lance came to the 49ers three years ago for three first round draft picks. Lance’s first pre season game against the Las Vegas Raiders he was sacked four times in three offensive possessions. In spite of that he came back in pre season game number two against the Denver Broncos on Aug 19th and had shown improvement. 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan already had their minds made up about dealing Lance to the Cowboys on Friday.

Purdy won the job after Lance and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt and led the 49ers toward the post season. Sam Darnold will be the second string back up who won the job struggled to get the offense moving in the first three possessions and threw for a touchdown a six yarder to Sam Snead. Purdy was 5-9 for 73 yards against the Chargers.

On the SF 49ers by David Zizmor:

#1 David Trey Lance had a better game under center against the Denver Broncos on Saturday going 12-18 for 173 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He looked like he got more traction in this outing.

#2 There was some doubt about Lance after his first pre season game against the Las Vegas Raiders bringing talk about shopping him to not making the team but all it took was one game to get back in everybody’s good graces.

#3 Brock Purdy looked like he hadn’t missed a step upon his return Saturday going 4-5 for 65 yards and had a 69 yard opening drive on ten plays that set up a kicker Jake Moody field goal good enough for 20 yards.

Niners Tame Broncos in the Silicon Valley, 21-20 on Moody’s Foot

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers (1-1) defeated the Denver Broncos (0-2) 21-20, in the closing seconds of Preseason action on the Southside of the Bay Area.

The game started with both starting QBs.(Brock Purdy & Russell Wilson) playing only one series each in the first quarter.

Purdy opened the contest passing for 65 yards (4-6) and set up a 20 yard field goal by Jake Moody. 3-0 SF.

The much maligned Wilson rallied his team with his arm (24) and feet (24), but he also had to settle for a field goal, instead of reaching the end zone. Kicker Brett Maher hit a 48-yarder, tying the contest at 3-3 after 15 minutes of the contest.

In the second quarter, Denver, led by Jarrett Stidham, positioned Maher for another FG (34) to take the lead, 6-3.

The Broncos were on a drive seconds before the half, when Stidham’s 50-yard pass to Jalen Virgil was stopped at the Niners’ one-yard line. Unfortunately for Denver, the halftime horn sounded before they could spike the ball. 6-3 Broncos at the Half.

The third stanza had some paydirt action, as both teams got past each other’s endzones.

The Niners capitalized on the Broncos pre-half miscue, and scored on an 11-yard TD pass to Jack Colletto; however, the extra point was missed by Moody. SF led 9-6 at that point of play.

After the 49ers muffed a punt return, Denver recovered the ball and subsequently scored on a eight-yard run by Jaleel McLaughlin. !3-9 Denver is how the third quarter ended.

The final 15 was exciting as Tre Lance was in position to pull off a game winning drive, although Kyle Shannahan had a different plan.

Moody’s foot came into play again, as he converted a 43-yard FG, pulling the Niners within one, 13-12.

However, Broncos’ QB Ben DiNucci tossed a TD pass to McLaughlin, extending their slim lead to eight, 20-12.

Trey Lance got the Santa Clara County crowd excited with his 22-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Latu, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to connect on the two-point conversion, which would have tied the game.

After Denver turned the ball over on downs, the aforementioned TreyFactor Drive happened, but instead of him being the hero of the night with a game-winning TD pass, Shanahan had him down the ball multiple times, to allow Moody to be the MAN.

Moody booted in the 32-yard winner, and the 49ers were the victors, 21-20 on a beautiful Northern California night.

The 49ers are in action again next Friday, August 25, as they host the Los Angeles Chargers at 7pm PDT. The Denver Broncos return to the Mile High City, where they will host the Los Angeles Rams next Saturday, August 26.

Raiders Rout San Francisco In Pre-Season Opener 34-7

By Barbara Mason

While it is the first game of pre-season, the Las Vegas Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers remain rivals despite the new geographical look for the Raiders. The rivalry has endured.

Las Vegas took an early 7-0 lead in the opening quarter. 10 plays and 68 yards later Zamir White rushed for one yard and the touchdown. This was their first drive of the game and Daniel Carlson capped it off with the extra point.

San Francisco tied up the game in the second quarter. Quarterback Trey Lance connected with Ross Dwelley for nine yards and the touchdown. The Raiders answered scoring before the half. With .34 seconds left on the clock Aiden O’Connell found Keelan Cole Sr. for 9 yards and touchdown followed by a second extra point from Daniel Carlson. They took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was all Raiders. Daniel Carlson connected on a 53-yard field goal giving the Raiders a 17-7 lead. This was just the start of domination by Las Vegas. With 1:24 left in the third, Sincere McCormick romped into the end zone for 2 yards and another Raider touchdown for a 24-7 lead.

Las Vegas completed the rout in the fourth quarter scoring twice. Daniel Carlson had a second field goal in the quarter, a 46 yarder giving the Raiders a 27-7 lead. Sincere McCormick had a second touchdown in the quarter. He pulled in a 2 yard pass from Chase Garber for the 34-7 lead which was the final.

Aidan O’Connell went 15 of 18 for 141 yards and a touchdown. Chase Garber was 3 of 5 for 11 yards and he also had one touchdown. Las Vegas finished with 120 rushing yards and 146 passing yards. Zamir White had 43 yards on 13 carries.

Of course this was only pre-season but if was obvious that Las Vegas put more thought into the game plan for this game then San Francisco.

Next up for Las Vegas in the second game of the pre-season will be the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium. That kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM next Saturday August 19.

On Sat 19 the 49ers will host the Denver Broncos at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara for the Niners first pre season home game a 5:30pm kick off. Michael Roberson will be reporting from Levi Stadium.

Giants trounced by Rangers 9-3 on ’90s night, and drop fourth-straight

Texas Rangers 9 (70-47)

San Francisco Giants 2 (62-55)

Win: Grant Anderson (2-1)

Loss: Alex Cobb (6-3)

Time: 2:44

Attendance: 33,112

The Giants’ offense sputtered again, as Rangers beat the Giants on 90s night at Oracle park, 9-3, to hand the Giants their fourth-straight loss, and their sixth loss in their last seven games.

Alex Cobb, who has struggled in the second half since his All-Star Game appearance, made the start for the Giants, and his struggles continued. Cobb got Marcus Semien to fly out to left field to start the game, but Corey Seager then hit a home run to straightaway center to put the Rangers on the board.

The Giants responded in the bottom of the first inning. Rangers starter Andrew Heaney set down the first two men he faced, but Wilmer Flores doubled, and Patrick Bailey singled him in, as the throw from Rangers left-fielder J.P. Martinez appeared as if it was going to get Flores at the plate, but it skipped in front of the catcher, Mitch Garver, which allowed Flores to score.

Cobb survived a two-out double in the top of the second, and the Giants appeared as if they were going to strike in the bottom of the second. Luis Matos walked to start the inning, and got to third on a long single off the right field wall by Michael Conforto.

Heliot Ramos then walked to load the bases with nobody out, but Mark Mathias struck out swinging, and Bruce Bochy surprisingly pulled Heaney from the game for Grant Anderson. Anderson then got Austin Slater to ground into a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning, as it was another opportunity wasted by the Giants.

The teams traded scoreless innings again in the third, as Cobb pitched a 1-2-3 inning, and Anderson pitched through a leadoff infield hit by Thairo Estrada.

Alex Cobb then faltered in the fourth. Nathaniel Lowe led off the inning with a base-hit, followed by an infield hit off the bat of Ardolis Garcia. Garver then singled to knock in Lowe and give the Rangers the lead, and Martinez singled to load the bases. Ezequiel Duran hit a sacrifice fly to center; Josh Smith walked; and Leody Tavares singled to knock in the third run of the inning and extend the Rangers lead to 4-1.

Michael Conforto hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2, but the Rangers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth, and that prompted Gabe Kapler to pull Alex Wood.

In his last five starts since July 20 in Cincinnati, Wood has gone 0-2 with a 6.58 ERA, as he has given up 19 runs over his last 26 innings.

“I don’t think it was his best outing, obviously,” said Kapler. “He’s the guy that we’re always depending on. He’s been one of our best pitchers. He’s done a really nice job for us all season. I don’t think it was his best outing, and [hopefully, he can] come back next time and get em.”

Kapler went to Alex Wood, who was coming off a decent four-inning performance on Tuesday against the Angels in Anaheim. J.P. Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to center to knock in Seager and get the run back, and Ezequil Duran singled in Adolis Garcia for an extra run to open their lead to 6-2.

Blake Sabol pinch-hit and walked, and advanced to second on a base-hit by Thairo Estrada to start the bottom of the fifth. Bochy then went to former Giant Chris Stratton, and like the second, the Giants wasted the opportunity, as Stratton set down the next three men in order.

Luis Matos singled to start the bottom of the sixth after a ground ball off his bat took a weird hop off the lip of the infield grass and ricocheted into left field. Michael Conforto walked, and just like the second and fifth, the Giants had two runners on and nobody out to start the inning, but just like the second and fifth, the Giants wasted it and had nothing to show for it.

“We haven’t been as productive as we can be, whether we have the platoon advantages, or we don’t,” said Kapler. “We’re not swinging the bat[s] consistently to put up crooked numbers. We didn’t play good enough as a team; [the Rangers] played very good as a team, and we just weren’t able to counter that.”

Alex Wood meanwhile set down eight-straight following the Duran base-hit in the fifth. Wood pitched a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh, and he survived a one-out triple off the bat of Duran unscathed in the top of the eighth.

“We had a decent thought that Alex could give us some length today,” said Kapler. “I thought he did a nice job of getting us through the middle innings. It’s not easy to come into that situation; I thought he did a good job.”

Stratton pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh, and Josh Sborz pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.

Wood then fell apart in the top of the ninth. Despite Wood’s solid innings, the Rangers made hard contact off him, but he finally paid for it in the ninth. Marcus Semien tripled to start the ninth, and he scored on a base-hit by Seager.

Nathaniel Lowe hit a nubber on the first base side, and when Webb went to get it, he fired it down the right field line, allowing the runners to get to second and third. Garcia flew out to right, but Mitch Garver singled in a pair to make it a laugher.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting to throw four-plus, five innings,” said Wood. “[I’m] just trying to go do what’s best for these guys in the clubhouse.”

There was a highlight in the bottom of the ninth, as with one out, Heliot Ramos, who has struggled over the course of two seasons between the majors and Triple-A, hit his first big league home run out to left-center field. Fortunately for Ramos, he was able to get the ball

“I got [the ball] right here,” said Ramos. “I gave up a bat, and two signed. I’m glad [the fan] brought it back. I thought I was going to lose the ball.”

Mark Mathias singled to left, but Blake Sabol was called out on strikes, and Thairo Estrada struck out swinging to end it.

The Giants have now lost four-straight, and six of their last seven, as they fall to 62-55, and their playoff lead in the wild card is now just a game and a half over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Giants will try to salvage a game in the series, as they will send their ace, Logan Webb, to the mound for a 1:05 start.

News and Notes:

Prior to the game, six members of the 1993 Giants gathered for the 30-year reunion of the improbable Giants team that won 103 games, but missed out on the National League West division title in playoffs in what was the final season of the four-team playoff format.

They were joined by the wives of the late Barney Nugent and Rod Beck, and the ceremony was emceed by the Giants’ public address announcer from 1993 to 1999, Sherry Davis, the first woman public address announcer in sports history. This was Davis’ first public appearance since her tenure ended, as well as her first time on the field at Oracle Park.

“These are my guys,” said Davis. “They’re so sweet, and they’re so nice. It’s so nice to see them again after all this time.

Davis also talked about the stress of her first year of 1993.

“It was the most exciting year [of my career], but it was also the most stressful,” Davis said. “I faced a lot of opposition, but I [had] a lot of support. It was a very stressful year for me, but it was wonderful. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
