ALAMEDA–It’s fitting way to go out after playing 18 years in the NFL at age 39 years old and Charles Woodson will hang em up after Thursday night’s Christmas eve special at the Oakland Coliseum against the San Diego Chargers. After Thursday this will be the last time that Woodson will play in Oakland as the Raiders will finish their 2015 schedule on the road for their final game in Kansas City which will be Woodson’s last game of his career.

The Raiders fans get to see arguably one of the greatest defensive players at that position and there are some rumors that he would possibly play a little bit of offense according to Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave. Woodson is just a phenomenal player.

You would think that he would have a little more in the tank but he mentioned that it was more mentally why he was leaving the game not physically and that Woodson says he couldn’t play football again. Physically is not the reason why he’s going to retire after he was dealing with his shoulder injury.

OAKLAND–On today’s podcast we discuss the San Francisco 49ers loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday 24-14. The Niners offense just couldn’t get anything going and was it a matter of they just couldn’t get it together or was the Bengals offense that good.

Looking to next Sunday’s game at Ford Field in Detroit the 49ers have lost three of their last five games, the Lions (5-9) have won four of their last six games we discuss the strategy of this game and who will be favored.

The Raiders (6-8) have lost four of their last six games and lost by ten points last Sunday to the Green Bay Packers 30-20. We look at this encouraged Raiders team who had some bright spots in this game and want to move onto the next step.

The Raiders host the Chargers (4-10) this Thursday at the Coliseum can the Raiders stop the Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers and can Raiders quarterback Derek Carr as he looks to throw into the promise land as he tries to get his receivers down field and open.

Woodson, Raiders prep for Chargers in home finale

OAKLAND — When Raiders safety Charles Woodson announced his retirement on Monday from the game of football after an illustrious 18-year career, it came as a shock since Woodson has been playing at high level for the Raiders this season.

On Tuesday, Woodson, along with linebacker Khalil Mack, and fullback Marcel Reece were selected to the Pro Bowl, as announced on the NFL Network during the network’s annual selection show.

Quarterback Derek Carr, rookie wide receiver Amari Cooper, and running back Latavius Murray are heading to Honolulu as well on Jan. 31, 2016 after being selected as Pro Bowl alternates for the first time in their young careers.

It marks the ninth time that Woodson has been voted to the Pro Bowl, while Reece is making his fourth-straight team, and Mack being voted to his first.

Woodson is a viable lock for a spot in Canton once the five-year waiting period is over.

When the Raiders host the Chargers (4-10) on Thursday in Oakland’s last home game (possibly in Oakland, but don’t lose hope), Raider Nation will have one more opportunity to see one of the greatest defensive players (at any position) in the NFL.

The former fourth overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft will no doubt receive the loudest ovation from the expected sellout crowd on Christmas Eve.

Oakland (6-8) dropped their last home game to the visiting Green Bay Packers 30-20 on Sunday eliminating the Silver and Black from playoff contention for the 13th straight season.

The Chargers (4-10), defeated the Miami Dolphins 30-14 in what many believe was the final game in San Diego for quarterback Philip Rivers and Co.

Rivers passed for three touchdowns (one interception), all to running back Danny Woodhead.

Woodhead added a rushing touchdown, giving him four total for the game.

Oakland and San Diego have been rumored, along with the St. Louis Rams as teams that are planning to relocate to Los Angeles next season.

Woodson to retire

Charles Woodson, who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders with the number four of the NFL Draft in 1998 made a stunning announcement.

Woodson announced that the 2015 season would be his last in the NFL after 18 years playing for the Raiders on two different occasions and Sunday’s opponent, the Green Bay Packers.

The safety led the Raiders to Super Bowl XXXVII, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by the final score of 48-21.

Woodson left the Raiders after the 2005 season to head to the Packers, where he played until the 2012 season.

The highlight of Woodson’s career was winning Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers by the final of 31-25 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Woodson enters the final two games of his career with soft some lofty credentials, as he has 65 interceptions with 11 touchdowns, 27 forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries with two touchdowns.

An eight-time Pro Bowler, Woodson was the first Defensive Player to ever win the Heisman Trophy, when he won the award in 1997, while playing for the University of Michigan Wolverines.

Playoff hopes disappear

OAKLAND-Once again, the Oakland Raiders will be sitting at home to watch the NFL Playoffs when they commence on January 9, 2016.

Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 39 for 204 yards and a touchdown, to help the Green Bay Packers defeat the Raiders 30-20 at the Coliseum.

With the loss to the Packers, the Raiders will miss the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season; however they still have a shot to finish the season with a .500 record if they defeat the San Diego Chargers in their home finale on Thursday night and then defeat the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on January 3.

Derek Carr went 23-of-47 for 276 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions, including one to Damarious Randall that the rookie out of Arizona State returned 43 yards for a touchdown. It was the third interception of the season for Randall and his return for a touchdown.

“I just saw him (Carr) throwing the ball, a little quick hitch. He ended up overthrowing it, and the ball ended up in my hands,” said Randall.

The Randall pick six came just 19 seconds after John Kuhn scored from five yards out to give the Packers a 7-0 lead.

Following the interception return for a touchdown by Randall, the Raiders drove the ball down the field and it finished it off with a 23-yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski to get the Raiders on the board.

Ben Heeney came up with a huge defensive play on second and six, as he sacked Rodgers for a nine-yard loss and then Rodgers threw an incomplete pass to Davante Adams, the Raiders got the ball back.

Latavius Murray gained 22 yards on third and three to get the Raiders into Packers territory, and then after a five-yard gain by Murray, Carr found Michael Crabtree for 23 yards down to the 11-yard line. The Packers defense was able to hold the Raiders to just three points, as Sebastian Janikowski, who played his 250th game for the Raiders, nailed a 30-yard field goal to get the Raiders within eight points.

Amari Cooper caught six passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the 14-point loss, but the rookie out of Alabama topped the 1,000 yard plateau for the season.

Cooper is the first Raiders wide receiver to top the 1,000 yard mark in receiving since Randy Moss in 2005.

“I guess it’s a good thing to do, but people go for 1,000 yards every year, so it’s not really a big thing,” said Cooper.

He is also the first Raiders rookie to top the 1,000 yard mark in receiving in team history.

“I guess it’s a good thing,’ said Cooper.

Carr and Cooper hooked up with just under 30 seconds remaining in the first half, as Carr found Cooper in the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown that cut the Packers down to just one.

After the Raiders went three and out on their initial series of the third quarter, the Packers drove the field and Mason Crosby gave the visitors a four-point lead after a 30-yard field goal went thru the uprights.

On their ensuing possession, the Raiders took the lead, as Carr found Cooper for a 26-yard touchdown pass.

Unfortunately, that would be the only lead in the game for the Raiders and the lead would not last long.

Jeff Janis got the Packers into great position, as he returned a Janikowski kick 47 yards to their own 47, and then just three plays later, Rodgers found former Raiders wide receiver James Jones for a 30-yard touchdown pass to give the Packers the lead for good.

The Raiders were unable to move the ball against the Packers defense, and then the Packers took the ball on a long drive.

Marquette King’s punt landed at the Packers two-yard line, but that did not stop the Packers from a 19 play 92 yard drive that last eight minutes and 11 seconds. The drive ended when Crosby nailed a 33-yard field goal.

After another King punt, the Packers put the finishing touches on the scoring, as Crosby nailed a 30-yard field goal.

Unlike the Raiders teams of the past where they would just give up, this team did not quit, as Denico Autry blocked a 49-yard field goal attempt by Crosby that was recovered by Curtis Lofton.

Unfortunately, it was too little to late, as the Raiders were unable to move the ball against the Packers defense and eventually lost the ball on downs with three seconds remaining in the game.

Raiders look to slow down Rodgers, Packers

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon

OAKLAND — At 6-7, the Raiders have a chance to reach the .500 mark this late in the season for the first time since finishing 8-8 in 2011 but it will be a tall order with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers visiting O.co Coliseum Sunday for Week 15.

Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. PDT with rain predicted for the forecast. This the first meeting between the two teams in Oakland since 2003, as each of the previous two match-ups occurred in Green Bay.

After a 1-4 stretch in November when the Packers found themselves behind the then first place Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North, Green Bay (9-4) has won back-to-back games and have overtaken Minnesota, who have dropped back-to-back games in December.

If there is ever a game where fans can see two exceptional quarterbacks that are eerily similar in playing styles, then the battle between Chico’s own Rodgers and Fresno’s own Derek Carr is the game.

Both quarterbacks are tied for fourth in the NFL with 28 touchdown passes, while Carr has the advantage in passing yards (3,313 to 3,175), Rodgers has thrown four less interceptions (five to nine) than Carr.

Seven of Carr’s nine interceptions have come in the fourth quarter. Fourth quarter interceptions have been Carr’s Achilles’ heel this season.

Carr and the Raiders had -12 yards of total offense in the first half, but turned things around in the second half with two touchdown passes to lead Oakland to a shocking 15-12 victory in Denver last Sunday.

Carr completed just 12 of 29 passes for 135 yards. His 41.4 completion rating was his lowest for any game this season.

Oakland held a very good Broncos’ offense to just 34 yards rushing, and have held eight of their last 11 opponents under 100 yards rushing. Dissecting the Raiders’ run defense further, they have yielded an average of 55.7 yards rushing per game in the last three games.

Amari Cooper, Oakland’s talented rookie wide receiver who came into the game with a team leading 920 receiving yards, was held without a catch against Denver’s tough secondary. Cooper might be hitting the rookie wall this late in the season, has been dealing with a foot injury this week.

The real story from Oakland’s victory in Denver was the tremendous play from defensive end Khalil Mack.

After being quiet in the first half, Mack was a house on fire in the second half tormenting Denver’s maligned offensive line by recording five sacks, seven tackles (six solo) and a forced fumble while being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. It was Mack’s third straight game with at least two sacks.

Mack, who leads the NFL with 14 sacks, is just two sacks away from Derrick Burgess’ franchise record of 16 sacks he set in 2006,  will have the Packers’ full attention Sunday.

Rodgers and Co. are coming off a 28-7 home victory over the down-trodden Dallas Cowboys in Week 15.

Green Bay’s signal caller completed 22 of 35 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns against Dallas. The two-time NFL MVP has his lowest completion percentage (61.2) and passer rating (97.5) since becoming the team’s full-time starter in 2008.

Rodgers is hoping that facing Oakland’s 28th ranked pass defense (271.5) will improve those numbers, but Rodgers must be aware that Oakland has gotten to the quarterback as the defense has recorded 19 sacks in the last five games.

Rodgers has been sacked 31 times this season, fourth-most in the NFC.

Sunday will also be the first time that current Raiders’ safety Charles Woodson and Packers’ wide receiver James Jones face their respected former teams.

Woodson, 39, was released by Green Bay in 2013, returned to Oakland and has found the fountain of youth.

The 18-year veteran who helped Green Bay win the Super Bowl in 2010, has played steady this season tied for third in the NFL with five interceptions and ranks first with four forced fumbles.

Jones, who was released by Oakland last year after leading the team with 73 catches and six touchdowns, is tied with tight end Richard Rodgers for the team lead with seven touchdown catches, and second on the team with 660 receiving yards behind fellow wide receiver Randall Cobb’s 737 yards.

Jones’s 18.9 yards per catch leads all NFL wide receivers with 30-plus catches.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Pack will be ready for Mack after job he did last week in Denver

by Joe Hawkes Beamon

USA Today Sports photo Khalil Mack celebrates win with fans after Sun 12-13-15 in Denver

ALAMEDA–The Oakland Raiders Khalil Mack was voted defensive player of the week for his seven tackles sack performance last week in Denver. He was pretty much a single force that was pretty much in Denver quarterback Brock Oswieler’s face all afternoon.

Mack is quietly becoming one of the better defensive players in the league, he already leading the league in sacks for the five sacks this past Sunday. He’s going to have another opportunity to get to Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers when the Rogers and Packers visit Oakland.

The Packers are already scheming up ways to stop Mack next Sunday, the Broncos tried pretty much the whole game using tackles. This Sunday trust me I won’t be surprised if Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy allows Mack to have a one on one opportunity to get to Rogers.

Mack lassos Broncos

By Jeremy Kahn

photo credit: AP Khalil Mack starred in game in Denver on 12-13-15

If needed Khalil Mack needed a release party to show that he is a defensive stud for the Oakland a Raiders, then this was the game.

Mack picked up five sacks in the second half including one in the end zone for a safety as the a Raiders came back from a 12-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Denver Broncos 15-12 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

The five sacks are a NFL season high, and the most by a Raiders player since Howie Long in 1983.

Derek Carr went just 12 of 29 for 135 yards passing and two touchdowns, as the Raiders defeated the Broncos for the first time since September 12, 2011.

Things looked bleak for the Raiders in the first half, as they were held to a minus 12 yards of total offense, the worst total by a team in the NFL since November 1, 1992 when the San Diego Chargers held the Indianapolis Colts to minus five yards.

Carr and the Raiders came out of the locker room, and scored on their initial series of the second half, as Carr found Seth Roberts for an 11-yard touchdown pass. The Raiders then cut the lead down to three points, when Mack sacked Brock Osweiler and guard Max Garcia recovered the ball in the end zone.

The Raiders took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter, as long snapper Jon Condo recovered a muff fumble off of the hands of Emmanuel Sanders, but on the play Condo injured his shoulder. Mychal Rivera caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Carr to give the Raiders a 15-12 lead, but the two-point conversion failed.

Brandon McManus missed a 49-yard field goal with 10:22 remaining in the game that would have tied the game. Sebastian Janikowski missed a 43-yard field goal that gave the Broncos another chance, but it was a former San Francisco 49ers player that helped them out in the end.

The Broncos began what looked like a game-winning drive, but a wide open former 49ers tight end Vernon Davis dropped a pass in his hands on fourth down.

Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to close it out and the Broncos were given one more chance; however the defense came up big in the end and Osweiler threw an incomplete pass on fourth down, and the Raiders cemented their sixth victory of the season.

Oakland Raiders former head coach Madden undergoes surgery

By Jeremy Kahn

John Madden may have coached the Oakland Raiders from 1969-1978, but still nearly 37 years after coaching his last game for the Raiders, the former coach remains a popular figure all over the country.

Madden, who became a top commentator for CBS and FOX with the late Pat Summerall from 1981-2001, before heading to ABC to work Monday Night Football with Al Michaels in 2002 and then the duo moved to Sunday Night to work for NBC. Madden retired from the booth after the 2009 booth, but still can be heard on KCBS in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Earlier this week, the 79-year old Madden underwent Open-Heart surgery at a San Francisco hospital and is recuperating at home.

Madden is still a popular figure, as his legendary video game is still one of the most popular games on the market and he still attends Raiders games along with current team owner Mark Davis and many of his former players.
