Oakland- The A’s started Cesar Valdez Thursday night against the Mariners. Valdez, who is 32 years old, last started a game in the Major Leagues way back on June, 10th, 2010. He pitched well in spring training and 1-0 with an ERA of 2.70 at Nashville. Valdez was filling in for Kendall Graveman and probably will be headed back to Nashville soon. Valdez has an average fastball, but his curveball and changeups have a lot of movement and are effective. The Mariners, winners of five of their last six games, tallied three runs in the first two innings Thursday night. The A’s came back and won 9-6.

The Mariners, as mentioned above, led 3-0 until the bottom of the third. The A’s scored three times to snap Paxton’s streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings to start the season. Jaff Decker and Rajai Davis singled to put men on at first and third with no out. Adam Rosales singled to drive in Decker. Davis scored when right fielder Mitch Haniger’s throw to third hit the second base bag and that allowed Rajai to score. Ryon Healy doubled to drive in Rosales to tie the game.

The A’s scored two more in the fifth to send Paxton to the showers. Rajai Davis singled to center, but the ball took a weird bounce and went through the legs of Leonys Martin in center. Davis ended up on third. Rosales hit a sac fly to drive in Davis.  Jed Lowrie Doubled and scored on a Ryon Healy single to put the A’s ahead 5-3. The Mariners’ shortstop, Taylor Motter, homered with a man aboard to tie the game at five. The A’s regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Josh Phegley led off with a double. Jaff Decker laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Phegley to third. Rajai Davis ground out, and that allowed Phegley to score.

The A’s behind two walks, and a blast to deep left field by Trevor Plouffe put the A’s ahead 9-5. The A’s bullpen of Ryan Dull, Sean Doolittle, Ryan Madson kept the Mariners off the board until the ninth. Santiago Casilla gave up a run but was able to close out the game.

Game Notes- The A’s, with the win, improved to 8-8 for the season. The A’s now own a modest three-game winning streak. The Mariners fall to 7-9. Ryon Healy was the hitting star with three hits and a couple of runs batted in. Cesar Valdez went four innings and allowed five hits and three runs. Frankie Montas pitched the fifth and sixth innings and gave up the two-run dinger to Taylor Motter.

Game two of the four-game series takes place Friday night at the Oakland Coliseum, Lefty Sean Manaea will go for Oakland, and he will be opposed by Hisashi Iwakuma. Game time is at 7:05 pm.

Time of game was three hours and ten minutes and a sparse crowd of 10,707 watched the A’ win.

A’s mess with Texas 9-1 in a laugher to win series

OAKLAND — The Oakland Athletics concluded a three-game series against the Texas Rangers with a lopsided 9-1 victory at O.co Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon.

The A’s suffered a 7-0 blowout by the Rangers in the series opener on Monday. They followed with a 4-2 win over the rival Rangers on Tuesday. Ultimately, they won the series, taking two out of three games. A’s right-handed pitcher Jesse Hahn (1-1) notched the win against  Rangers left-handed pitcher Martin Perez (1-2).

Ryon Healy put the A’s on the board 1-0 with a line-drive single that scored Rajai Davis in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Phegley followed with a double, driving home Healy and Khris Davis to make it 3-0 A’s. Yonder Alonso added an RBI double to extend the A’s lead to 4-0 to end the inning on a high note.

The A’s made a questionable call in the top of the first inning, claiming Robinson Chirinos was out at first base. The Rangers challenged the call and the officials declared that Chirinos was safe.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister was ejected from the ballgame in the bottom of the third inning after arguing that the A’s ball was foul, but it was ruled a fair ball.

Joey Gallo ruined the A’s shutout bid with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Davis expanded the A’s lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. He hit a two-run home run and brought home Trevor Plouffe for his seventh of the season.

The runs just kept pouring in during the sixth inning. Chad Pinder scored his first home run of the season, increasing the A’s lead to 7-1. Plouffe then hit a two-run single that scored Davis and Adam Rosales for a 8-1 lead.

The A’s defeated the Rangers 9-1.

OAKLAND–The Oakland A’s snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s Andrew Triggs earned his third victory of the year as he went six innings and allowed just three hits. The Rangers scored two runs in the sixth, but both were unearned. The A’s tallied four in their half of the sixth to send Yu Darvish and the Rangers down to defeat 4-2.

Triggs kept the Rangers off the board for the first five innings. In the sixth, Jurickson Profar reached on a rare error by A’s first baseman Yonder Alonso. Profar advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ranger shortstop Elvis Andrus singled sharply to center to drive in Profar with the first run of the game. Andrus then stole both second and third. Andrus scored when he beat Adam Rosales’ throw home on a grounder was late. Triggs got Mike Napoli to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Rangers lead 2-0.

Darvish, who had allowed the A’s just one hit in the first five innings, fell apart in the bottom of the sixth. Darvish walked Trevor Plouffe to start the inning. Rosales tied the game when he hit went yard with a blast to left field. The next hitter, Jaff (pronounced Jeff), Decker doubled to left field. Darvish walked Alonso and Rangers’ manager Jeff Banister removed him from the game. Ranger reliever Tony Barnette walked Jed Lowrie to load the bases. Khris Davis hit a sac fly to deep centerfield to drive in Alonso with the A’s third run of the inning. Dario Alvarez was brought in to pitch to Stephen Vogt. A’s manager sent in Ryon Healy to hit for Vogt. Healy came through with a bloop hit that landed safely in front of four Ranger players and the A’s now owned a 4-2 lead.

There was no more scoring in the game. The A’s bullpen was excellent. Sean Doolittle retired the Rangers in order in the seventh. Melvin let Doolittle start the eighth as he faced Joey Gallo was is left-handed. Doolittle struck him out. Ryan Dull finished the inning retiring Ryan Rua and Carlos Gomez. Santiago Casilla set the Rangers down in the ninth 1-2-3 to earn the save and secure the win for Triggs.

Game notes- The A’s snapped a four-game losing streak and improved the season record to 6-8. The Rangers dropped to 5-9. The rubber game of the three-game series will be played Wednesday afternoon at 12:35 pm.

Andrew Triggs set an A’s franchise record as he has not allowed an earned run in 17 2/3rd innings of work and is 3-0 to start the season. The A’s announced that they have called up righty Cesar Valdez to start against Seattle Thursday night.

OAKLAND–To make baseball more enjoyable for the fans today’s fan is into offense, today’s fan isn’t into defense back in the day we got to go to a game and we got to see some of the world’s greatest pitchers. The first game I ever saw was my first MLB game in 1957 and the incredible Hall of Famer Warren Span was on the mound for the then Milwaukee Braves. He was pitching and he pitched until he was 42 years old.

Those guys back in those days were phenomenal we were used to seeing games that were 1-0, 2-0, and 2-1 and for us those were exciting games but today’s fans have been taught to be offense oriented. They’ve been taught that though basketball, through football, and they’ve even been taught that through baseball because of the Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, and Sammy Sosa era and put all the PED things aside.

Just because of the explosive home runs the excitement of that era and everything else they set the tone for that and now all of a sudden they want to go back and make it the 2-1 game. It’s never going to go back you want to sell the game? Sell the game of home runs.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Canseco criticized for criticizing A’s but he was telling it like it is

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–This is thing that Jose Canseco Comcast NBC analyst was hired for is to tell it like it is and Canseco get’s criticized for saying the A’s are not prepared, sloppy, and are playing like a Triple A team. Right now especially after they’ve lost four straight and got whipped in a Monday night laugher in front of 10, 406 people 7-0 to the Texas Rangers at the Oakland Coliseum. He said they were disorganized, they were swinging at the ball way out of the strike zone.

There was a play where the A’s centerfielder Rajai Davis missed the cut off man for an error and it led to a two base error. Monday night was the worst game I’ve seen the A’s play and the Rangers are no great shakes at the moment as both teams are tied for last in the cellar of the American League West. In games if the A’s lose 10-0 or 7-0 you have to say the other team played better.

You have to be honest and I have to agree with Jose because the A’s played lousy last night, I’m sure A’s manager Bob Melvin recognizes that and Canseco said he was just calling them as he sees them and the A’s looked like they just wanted to get out of here. I know it was raining the day before Sunday and Sunday’s game got called on the count of rain with the Houston Astros it will be made up as part of a doubleheader September 9th. The Rangers are still a good team and they won the last two years for the AL West title.

A’s shutout lose their fourth game in a row 7-0 as things start to go south for the team

by Jerry Feitelberg

Oakland- The A’s woes continued Monday night as they welcomed the Texas Rangers to the Oakland Coliseum. Both teams were looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The Rangers were the one that did as they beat the A’s 7-0 before a sparse crowd on a cold and rainy evening.

Jharel Cotton started for Oakland and took the loss. Cotton went 5 and 1/3rd innings allowing five runs and five hits. Cotton walked four, and three of them scored. Former Athletic, A.J. Griffin won his second of the young season. Griffin restricted the A’s to just one hit in six innings of work. Griffin struck out eight, one less than his career-high. Griffin last pitched at the Oakland Coliseum on September 18th, 2013. Griffin underwent Tommy John surgery and was released by the A’s after the 2015 season.

The Rangers scored in the top of the first. Cotton gave up singles to Carlos Gomez and Elvis Andrus. Hot-hitting Nomar Mazara doubled to drive in Gomez with the first run of the game. As it turned out, it was the only run the Rangers would need.  The Rangers scored four times in the top of the fifth. Carlos Gomez and Mike Napoli each had a double and each drove in two runs to put the game out of reach. The Rangers scored two more in the ninth of A’s reliever Liam Hendriks.

Game notes- The A’s continued to play poorly on defense as they committed another error.  The offense has gone into the deep freeze as the best the A’s could do was two singles and a pinch-hit Ryon Healy double in the ninth, and only one player made it past second base.

The A’s are now 5-8 for the season, and the Rangers improved to 5-8.

The medical report was not good. Kendall Graveman, the A’s number one starter, was placed on the 10-day Disabled List with a shoulder strain. Marcus Semien, who was second on the team last year with 27 homers, will have surgery to repair a broken bone in his right wrist. Semien will be lost for 6 weeks. The A’s recalled infielder Chad Pinder and catcher Bruce Maxwell from Nashville.

Game two of the three-game set will be played Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. Andrew Triggs will pitch for Oakland, and the Rangers will counter with Yu Darvish. Game time will be at 7:05 pm.

Giants battle the Rockies, persistent rain, only to come up one run short 4-3

AP17106764187181

By Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–After an unscheduled interruption during the national anthem, five extra base hits and six runs in a first inning played in a vigorous downpour, and the groundskeeping crew’s constant resuscitating of the playing surface, the hearty fans that braved it all had to feel they were into an epic afternoon of topsy, turvy baseball injected with frequent scoring.

Instead the rain eased, the pitching soared, and the scoring all but drived up.  And the hero of the afternoon didn’t tote a bat, but carried a catcher’s glove and assisted on a putout at first base.  But what a play.

With the Giants threating to push across the tying run in the sixth, Brandon Crawford hit a dribbler up the line that figuratively died. But Tony Wolters shed his mask, raced to the ball, took airborne, and unleashed an accurate flip to first baseman Mark Reynolds for the out. SportsCenter? You bet.

Take away the moisture and Wolters’ gymnastics, and the Giants’ issue of  the moment– scoring too few runs–couldn’t have been more apparent.  Jeff Samardzija, who fell to 0-3 after the Giants’ 4-3 loss, allowed three of those runs in his first 15 pitches.  With the Giants’ offense sputtering for the majority of the afternoon, Samardzija’s early hiccup couldn’t be overcome.

“We need to figure out a way to scratch one or two across when we need them to close the gap,” Samardzija said. “That comes from not letting runs in early, so you can take the lead.”

The Giants fell to 5-8 on the season with the loss, with a trip to Kansas City to face the Royals up next.  The Rockies grabbed three of four in the series and improved to 8-5.

The rain left the field waterlogged, especially along the tracks and in the corners.  But the Giants’ groundskeeping crew worked tirelessly to minimize the moisture only to be thanklessly chased off the field at points by the time conscious umpires.  The rain was its most intense in the first two innings. It eased after that, but never ceased.

The Giants haven’t experienced a rain out at home in 10 years with the last one coming in 2006 against the Astros. By comparison, the A’s did rain out with their home game set to start at the same time as the Giants.  But with the Warriors hosting a playoff game next door, and far fewer A’s tickets sold that Giants’ tickets, economics may have explained the team’s different approaches to the weather, more so than the Giants’ more reliable field drainage system.

Petaluma’s Madeline Haedt sang the national anthem, and did so flawlessly until an unscheduled interruption half way through.  But after gathering herself, and clearing her throat, she finished flawlessly as well.

Astros vs Athletics Sunday finale postponed due to rain – looking ahead to the Rangers

By Charlie O. Mallonee

rainout

OAKLAND–The third and final game of the series between the Houston Astros and the Oakland Athletics that was scheduled to begin at 1:05 pm on Sunday has been postponed due inclement weather. A quick check of the records appear to make this the first postponement in Oakland since April 4, 2014 when a Mariners – A’s game had to be canceled due to a wet infield. The tarp was not put on the infield the night before and a rainstorm drenched the field.

In some ways, this may be a relief for the Athletics. The Astros mastery of the A’s continued on Saturday as they overcame a strong pitching performance by Sean Manaea that included 5-plus no-hit innings to comeback and win the game 10-6.

Houston is now 2-0 versus the Athletics in 2017 and have won nine consecutive games  from the A’s dating back to last season.

The make up date has not been announced. The Astros next visit to Oakland is June 19-22 for a four-game series. It is highly unlikely that it would be turned into a five-game series due to pitching rotations. That would make the three-game series scheduled for September 8-10 the best candidate for a day-night doubleheader. Oakland has an off day on September 7 and a travel day on the 11th.

The Athletics started the day in third place in the American League West with a record of 5-7. They are three games back of the Astros. Oakland is 4-6 in their last 10 games and have lost three games in a row.

The Astros currently lead the AL West with eight wins and four losses. That is the best record in the American League. Houston is 6-4 in their last 10 games and have won four consecutive games.

Up next

The Athletics are scheduled to begin a three-game series with the Texas Rangers on Monday night in Oakland. The A’s are 1-2 versus the Rangers so far this season.

A’s manager Bob Melvin has announced that the plan is to push the pitching rotation back a game so the probables will be as follows:

Mon 4/17 vs TEX   RHP Jharel Cotton (1-1, 3.97) vs. RHP A.J. Griffin (1-0, 6.75) 7:05

Tue 4/18 vs TEX    RHP Andrew Triggs (2-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Yu Darvish (1-1, 2.33) 7:05

Wed 4/19 vs TEX RHP Jesse Hahn (0-1, 3.75) vs. LHP Martin Perez (1-1, 2.20) 12:35

Roster moves for the Athletics

Chad Pinder

Shortstop Marcus Semien has been placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Saturday due to a right wrist contusion. Semien is scheduled to have more testing on the wrist performed on Monday.

Infielder Chad Pinder has been recalled by the A’s from Triple-A Nashville to take Semien’s place on the roster.

Pinder was batting .324 for the Sounds with one RBI in nine games. He had played six games at second base and three games at shortstop for Nashville. Pinder made his Major League debut with the A’s last season batting .235 with four RBI in 22 games.

Manaea dazzles then fizzles as Astros beat Athletics 10-6 on Saturday

By Charlie O. Mallonee

Here’s your 2:20 Game Wrap

  • Manaea is the first A’s starting pitcher to allow no hits without pitching a complete game since Chris Codiroli was removed after 5.1 innings versus the White Sox on June 27, 1986
  • The A’s have lost their last nine games versus the Astros which carries back to last season
  • Khris Davis’ home run was his sixth of the season and second in this series
  • The A’s allowed five stolen bases in the game on Saturday
  • At 8-4, this is the Astros best 12-game start since 2006

Bob Melvin was not happy about the results of the game for his Athletics
