OAKLAND–A’s manager Bob Melvin was looking for A’s starting pitcher Jharel Cotton to have some success against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum but all for not as Cotton went five, surrendering eight hits, and  seven runs. So far this year Cotton has been in and out, when he’s good he’s good. When he’s bad he’s been getting knocked around and his ERA is 5.58. The A’s are a little concerned about him and their trying to decide whether to send him down to Nashville to get a little bit more consistent.

Cotton has been able to dodge the bullet so far this year and in his last start on Tuesday it was no time to give up a home run to Albert Pujols who hit his 596th home run of there is no question Pujols will end up a Hall of Famer when he retires. Cotton also gave up a home run to the Angels Ben Revere for his second home run of the season and Revere has seven home runs for his entire career. Also in the third inning Cotton gave up a three run homer to the Angels Yunel Escobar.

The Angels pound Jharel Cotton, send the A’s down to defeat 7-3; No ninth inning walk off miracles this time

OAKLAND- The Los Angeles Angels evened the series at one apiece as they pounded out three home runs and defeated the A’s 7-3 Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum.

The A’s starter Jharel Cotton continued his pattern of inconsistency as he was not on his game Tuesday night. He started strong as he struck out the first two batters he faced. Angels’ DH Albert Pujols broke the spell when he blasted his fifth homer of the year to give the Angels an early 1-0 lead. The A’s retaliated in the bottom of the first when Yonder Alonso hit his tenth of the year to give the A’s a very short-lived advantage 2-1 after one inning.

In the second Cotton gave up two big flys. Ben Revere hit his first to tie the game, but the big blow came when Yunel Escobar took Cotton deep wit two on to put the Angels in the driver’s seat 5-2.  The Angels scored two more in the fourth to extend their lead. A’s manager let Cotton pitch one more inning before taking him out of the game.

The A’s scored one in the bottom of the sixth when Yonder Alonso slammed his eleventh home run over the fence in right-centerfield. Alonso never had more than nine homers in a season and now has a career-high eleven. It was his second two-homer game, the last coming this past Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. Alonso now leads the A’s in homers and is second in the AL just behind the Yankees Aaron Judge who has thirteen.

Josh Smith pitched three innings in relief of Cotton and did not allow a hit. Daniel Coulombe pitched the ninth, and he did not allow a hit either.

Game Notes- Jharel Cotton was the losing pitcher and is now 3-4 for the year. Alex Meyer evened his record at 1-1. The A’s drop to 15-18 while the Angels improved to 17-18.

The A’s recalled Mark Canha from Nashville, and he pinch hit for Matt Joyce in the eighth. Outfielder Jaff Decker was designated for assignment.

Khris Davis set an A’s franchise record for consecutive games with a strikeout by a non-pitcher(20). On this date on May 9th, 2010, Dallas Braden pitched a perfect game.

The A’s and Angels conclude the three-game series Wednesday afternoon at 12:35 pm. Andrew Triggs will go for Oakland, and he will be opposed by former A’s pitcher Jesse Chavez.

Time of game was 3 hours and six minutes and just 11,383 people watched as the Angels beat the A’s for the sixth time in nine tries so far this season.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: If Warriors want to go down in history as one of the greatest they have to start winning multiple championships

On That’s Amaury’s Podcast (static for the first few minutes):

I never remember seeing a basketball team like the Warriors I used to be the Warriors play by play announcer and I covered the era where Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippin, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr and that legendary Bulls team was playing. Those Bulls teams won six titles, this Warriors team is a very, very good team but to compare them with those Bulls teams their going to have to win this year to get their second championship and win a few more after that.

They need to win this year or else they’ll go down in history as the team that was almost the greatest but just couldn’t win the title and more than likely they’ll be facing the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals who also just finished sweeping to advance to the next round. The Warriors are like a machine right now this team is better than they used to be because they have Kevin Durant a superstar. They have a great combination of stars and they seem to do everything right and they need to get the championship this year if they want to go down in history as the greatest franchise but right now those Chicago Bulls teams of the 90s have nothing to worry about.

A’s win their third walk-off In a row as the beat the Angels in eleven innings 3-2

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s won heir third game in a row and fourth in the last five games as Jed Lowrie hit his second home run of the night in the eleventh inning to send the fans into a frenzy as the A’s recorded their third walk-off win a row with a score of 3-2.

Kendal Graveman started for the A’s. He gave up a two-run dinger to Luis Balbuena and the first inning but settled down and did not allow another run in his seven innings of work. The Angels’ starter Ricky Nolasco was rocked by two solo homers but nothing else as he also went seven innings. The A’s used Ryan Madson, Santiago Casilla, and Liam Hendriks in relief. Hendriks picked up the win.

The Angels drew first blood in the first inning against the A’s Monday night. Angels’ third baseman Yunel Escobar led off with a single. Graveman retired the next two hitters but Luis Balbuena, playing first base, homered to center just over the 400-foot marker to put the Halos ahead 2-0.

The A’s got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when A’s second baseman Jed Lowrie led off with a home run to right field. Nolasco did not suffer any more damage in the inning as the A’s trail the Angels 2-1 after four complete.

The A’s tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when third baseman Trevor Plouffe hit a solo homer over the left-centerfield wall near the TV cameras. It was Plouffe’s fifth tater of the season.

Neither team could score in regulation. The game went into extra innings, and the A’s prevailed in the bottom of the eleventh when Jed Lowrie hit his second home run of the night to give the A’s the win 3-2.

Game Notes- Jed Lowrie was the hitting star for Oakland Monday night. He slammed two solo homers to propel Oakland to the victory. The A’s are now 15-17 for the year, and the Angels fall to 16-18. The Angels’ MVP Mike Trout did not play due to a hamstring injury. He may play Tuesday, but the decision will be made before the start of the game. Graveman hit shortstop Andrelton Simmons with a pitch in the first inning. Simmons left the game and X-Rays were taken. The results were negative, and Simmons is listed as day-to-day.

Game two of the three-game series will be played Tuesday night at the Oakland Coliseum. Attendance was 10,929 and time of game was three hours and six minutes.  Jharel Cotton (3-3, 4.64 ERA) will go for Oakland, and Alex Meyer (0-1, 9.39 ERA) will pitch for LA

A’s, Healy walk off again, capture series over the Tigers

AP17128000751270

By Morris Phillips

OAKLAND–Plan A for the Oakland A’s while well conceived, fell by the wayside on Sunday, when spent, snakebitten starter Sonny Gray departed in the fifth inning.

Plan B had promise, but faltered when Ryan Dull couldn’t hold a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning and act as a bridge to the sweet side of the Oakland bullpen.

Plan C, while impropable and lacking originality, had the backing of 25 strong-willed players, and unlike Plan A and B, panned out, producing a wildly-satisfying result for the resurgent A’s.

Ryon Healy’s two-run homer capped a three-run ninth, and the A’s shocked closer Frankie Rodriguez and Tigers for the second, consecutive day, winning 8-6.  While Healy’s blast won it, the final strike was built on a combination of individual efforts, including the two, aforementioned failures that ultimately led to the dramatic, bottom of the ninth.

“It just seemed like it was a total team effort.  We can’t rely on one or two guys,” manager Bob Melvin said.  “You have to get contributions on all ends of it from us, and we did.”

Healy’s shot set off the A’s customary, celebratory hijinks replete with whipped cream, Gatorade and a bubble gum kicker.  More succinctly, the win gave the streaky A’s consecutive wins for the first time since April 22.  The wins allowed the A’s to escape the AL West cellar, now occupied by the slumping Rangers.  In fact, the entire American League has a topsy turvy look to it with the Rangers, Blue Jays and Royals all in last place, while the Yankees–thought to be rebuilding–possess the circuit’s best record at 20-9.

Gray made his second start of the season after rehabilitating his shoulder, and he looked fine structurally, firing mid 90’s fastballs, and displaying command of all his pitches.  But bad luck factored in Gray’s departure; Dixon Machado’s infield single, and first baseman Yonder Alonso’s fielding error on a chopper hit by Andrew Romine sparked the Tiger’s three-run rally that forced Gray from the game in the fifth.

Earlier, Nick Castellanos’ check swing resulted in an RBI double scoring Machado with the game’s first run.  But the A’s presumptive ace but up a zero in the fourth, and the A’s rallied to take a 4-1 lead. Overall, not a bad outing for Gray, who’s looking to rebound from a subpar 2016.   Gray allowed seven hits, four runs but only one of the four was earned.

Alonso homered in the fourth with a man aboard, his fifth home run in the last six games, adding to his home run total, already at a career-best nine despite the season only being 30 games old.

Khris Davis, Healy and Trevor Plouffe enjoyed two-hit games, with the slumping Plouffe lifting his average above .200 with the effort.  Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth and picked up the win.

Rodriguez, the iconic closer who ranks fourth all-time with 437 saves, appeared despondent after the game, in complete disregard of his accomplishments over a 16-year, big league career, and preoccupied with a really, tough weekend for himself and the Tigers.

“I just hope they don’t give up because I don’t want to be judged for the last 10 outings of my career for what I’ve done for 15 years,” K-Rod said.  “I’m confident that I’m going to bounce back.”

Kendall Graveman will get the start for the A’s on Monday night at the Coliseum, in the series opener against the Angels.  Graveman is trying to regain his season-beginning momentum that dissipated when he was shelved on April 15 with shoulder issues.  Frequent flyer, opposing pitcher Ricky Nolasco will make his 10th career start against the A’s for Anaheim.

On the MLB Podcast with Matt Harrington:

I’ve been to 200-300 plus games at Fenway Park and I’ve never been witnessed to anything like that but I have on the flip side was at a game at TD Garden when Montreal was in town to play the Boston Bruins and the Canadiens Georges Laraque was in town and someone was in the stands making some slurs at Laraque and some derogatory comments. Luckily for us there was somebody the stands who went over and told him “knock it off, it’s not right, shut up what your saying inappropriate” so that nipped it in the bud there. You would have thought somebody would have done something a little quicker at Fenway for the Baltimore Orioles Adam Jones.

At the Oakland Coliseum and at AT&T Park the fans have the ability to text out to stadium operations for help in these kind of matters. The call did go out at Fenway but there was a slow response. It was terrible it’s a black eye for the Red Sox organization and I don’t necessarily know what the solution is going to be other than solving racism in America. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred doesn’t have the jurisdiction to stop it but that particular fan has been banned for life from ever coming back to Fenway Park again.

A’s Fielding, Offensive Woes Continue Against Fulmer, Tigers in 7-2 Loss

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s debuted a tribute to Ford C. Frick Award winner and former announcer Bill King, unveiling a light-up sign in center field that reads King’s trademark “Holy Toledo!” after major plays. Unfortunately for the A’s, there was not much to get worked up about in Friday night’s 7-2 loss to the visiting Detroit Tigers. The A’s have now lost eight out of their last ten games.

“It’s a tough stretch,” said A’s first baseman Yonder Alonso. “But we have a group of guys who have been here before, a bunch of veterans. It’s a tough stretch, but as professionals we have to grind it out and play better. We know that.”

Reigning American League Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer held the A’s to just two runs on eight hits, striking out nine over eight innings. Victor Martinez knocked in two runs and Jim Adduci plated three for the Tigers off A’s starter Andrew Triggs. Yonder Alonso knocked in two runs for Oakland. Rajai Davis collected career hit 1,000 for Oakland. Detroit scored three unearned runs in the contest.

“We didn’t play our best baseball,” said Alonso. “They obviously did. They outplayed us in every aspect of the game.”

Triggs entered the game coming off his best start of his career. The 28-year-old side-slinger went seven innings against the Houston Astros Saturday, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out nine. Friday night he looked off his game from first pitch, loading the bases in the first before inducing a timely double play.

The Tigers went in order in the second, but capitalized on Adam Rosales error to open the third. After Jose Iglesias reached on the misplay, leadoff man Andrew Romine singled. Triggs would get two quick outs, but a two-run single to Victor Martinez gave Detroit a 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs.

Detroit added three runs in sixth after Triggs gave up back-to-back singles to Martinez and Justin Upton. He issued a walk to Tyler Collins to end his night with the bases loaded and one out. Jim Hendriks gave up a bases-clearing double to Jim Adduci to put Oakland down 5-0 and tag Triggs (4-2, 2.34 ERA) the loss.

“It ended up being two hits,” said A’s manager Bob Melvin. “He walked a couple guys, managed it, got a double play ball in the first… He was throwing similar to what we’ve seen, just allowed a few more baserunners.”

The A’s scored in the bottom of the sixth after Jed Lowrie singled to open the inning. Khris Davis reached on an error then Alonso laced his first RBI basehit. Detroit added two runs in the eighth, one earned and one unearned, but Alonso would double home a run in the bottom of the frame. He’s now batting .348 over his last 15 games.

“I simplify things,” said Alonso of his approach this season amidst a .295 batting average and six homers on the year. “I’m just trying to get a good pitch.”

Shane Green relieved Fulmer after his eight innings of work, pitching a clean ninth to close the book on the A’s. Oakland looks to bounce back Saturday with Jesse Hahn on the mound. He’ll be opposed by Jordan Zimmermann and his 6.18 ERA.
