Headline Sports podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: How opening Georgia up is a bad idea for the sports world; NHL considering the neutral site game; plus more

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said that neutral game sites are still on the table but nothing has been determined yet since shelter in place is still a policy (file photo from hockeynews.com)

On Headline Sports with Mary Lisa:

#1 Mary Lisa we just wanted to talk to you about Georgia opening up. Atlanta magazine called the idea “a life and death decision” and that “the data to open up doesn’t add up. Georgia governor Brian Kemp is basically opening up because the economic problem is bigger than Coronavirus. The opening means no social distancing and sheltering in is not being forced, gyms, dinning in with others, and retail are all opened up again in Georgia.

#2 NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says games could be held in neutral sites and there would be up to three games a day with fans. Bettman said it was still on the table and that “we don’t live in a world of perfect anymore” also local games are on the table but with no fans.

#3 Nonetheless the Toronto Maple Leafs Auston Matthews and Frederick Anderson are working out at Matthews Arizona home. Anderson is self quarantined in Matthews house and they taking shots and practicing without any ice at the house.

#4 How important is it for the Columbus Blue Jackets to have signed goalie Elvis Merzlinkins to a two year deal

#5 The Pittsburgh Penguins Sydney Crosby express condolences to his hometown Cole Harbour Nova Scotia after 16 people were shot by a man dressed like a Royal Mounted Police officer.

Headline Sports podcast with Len Shapiro: Rangers Panarin could be NHL MVP; Flames looking to sign Hamonic and Brodie; plus more

New York Rangers Artemi Panarin is a candidate for the NHL for the Hart Trophy if the season was to be wiped out by the current pandemic (file photo New York Post)

Headline Sports with Len Shapiro:

# 1 The New York Rangers Artemi Panarin was mentioned for a candidate for the Hart Trophy. Rangers head coach David Quinn said that Panarin was well deserving. Panarin scored 95 points (32 goals and 63 assists).

#2 The Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving said he’s considering signing defensemen Travis Hamonic and TJ Brodie but is holding off until the pandemic shutdown is over.

#3 How crucial is it that the Seattle NHL leadership get the expansion team on track and have things ready in time for the 2021-22 season. Edmonton Oilers head coach David Tippet said it will be an exciting addition to the league and as a new expansion team they’ve got a lot to live up to after what the Vegas Golden Knights did for expansion.

#4 Len after the long layover if the NHL is successful in bringing neutral site games to North Dakota and Saskatchewan can the San Jose Sharks recover from the long lay off and may Eric Karlsson and Logan Couture can shake off the cob webs and have had time to heal from their injuries?

#5 The Shark goalie Aaron Dell had some solid goaltending before the season was suspended with 3.17 goals against a .907 save percentage he could be a factor if the season was to return.

Headline Sports podcast with Matt Harrington: Byfuglien and Jets part ways might retire; Bettman says things will remain on hold until it’s safe; plus more

On Headline Sports podcast with Matt:

#1 The Winnipeg Jets Dustin Byfuglien and the Jets have parted company. The Jets terminated Byfuglien’s contract which had one more year on it. It was a mutual parting of the ways as the 35 year Byfuglien had ankle surgery back in October and missed 71 game including pre season back in September.

#2 The NHL hasn’t given up on the season yet NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said safety comes first for the players and the public before the league returns back to action.

#3 The idea to have neutral site games in places like North Dakota and Saskatchewan and have some 30 teams up for games could be a gamble for Bettman it could be a successful idea that could go without a hitch or it could be just that one player or one worker in the arena that could set shelter in place up all over again.

#4 The Montreal Canadiens Andrei Markov 41 who has played 16 seasons and 900 games has announced his retirement. Markov said he wants to spend more time with his family and said the time has come.

Headline Sports podcast with Matt Harrington: NHL says neutral site hockey is not a first choice but on the table

nhl.com file photo: NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said while neutral site games are a consideration it’s not the league’s first choice

On Headline Sports podcast with Matt:

#1 NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly was discussing neutral site games when the NHL season resumes Daly did add that it would not be the preferred choice.

#2 Daly said that the NHL should and would be prepared as much as they possibly can but said that it’s premature to set that course at this juncture.

#3 The NHL has directed the players to self quarantine through April 15th and Daly said he would not be surprised if that date is extended

#4 While the window to finish the regular season and Stanley Cup post season remains open neutral site hockey might be a strong option considering local laws for shelter in place and social distancing still being in effect.

#5 Daly also had to take into consideration the new season isn’t that far behind a neutral site scenario. September is the supposed start of the exhibition season followed by the regular season in October.

#4 What about the possibility of a Stanley Cup Playoff starting late in June finishing with the finals September.

#5 The number of NHL players with Covid-19. The Colorado Avalanche have three players and the Ottawa Senators with five players infected. Before doing anything the NHL wants to confirm they have a clean bill of health before starting anything.

Obituary: Ralph Gora former voice over talent dead at 90

file photo from fanbuzz.com: Former San Francisco 49er wide receiver Terrell Owens twice interviewed with Ralph Gora when Owens was with the Cowboys at the NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu calling him over to do an exclusive something that was unheard of at the time

By Michael Wang (SRS Staff writer)

SAN JOSE–He was an incredible voice for introducing radio talent during restaurant remotes in San Jose. Ralph Gora voice over talent read copy before all shows introducing Sportstalks’ talent right here on sportsradioservice.com from Chachoe’s Mexican Restaurant, Picasso’s Spanish Restaurant and many more in downtown San Jose. His voice would carry over the entire restaurant when he read his copy introductions.

Ralph had been having a bout with a broken hip and passed away at the age of 90. Ralph was born in Honolulu Hawaii well before it became the 50th state in 1930. He moved to San Jose and attended San Jose State University and graduated as a space engineer. Ralph worked at Ford Aerospace after graduating and retired.

After retirement Ralph took work doing voice overs at 1430 KVVN starting in 2002, besides doing many voice overs and radio introductions at various South Bay restaurants and locations promoting fine dinning and introducing Sportstalk talent from the likes of Michael Duca (mlb.com), David Zizmor (SF 49ers analyst), Shawn McCullough (webmaster and site photographer), Jeremy Kahn (Oakland Raiders beat writer), Amaury Pi Gonzalez (Oakland A’s Spanish radio),  and many more Ralph got to cover Fight Nights in the Tank at SAP Center along with co-writer Michael Wang.

Both Ralph and Michael covered boxer Andre Ward who came from Oakland to fight in San Jose. Ward was very gracious with his interviews with Ralph. Ralph covered two Pro Bowls in Honolulu and interviewed many NFL All Stars.

One former Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Terrell Owens called over to Ralph Gora to go ahead and interview him and also asked Ralph to sit with him. A rarity from someone like Owens who had a on and off again relationship with the media.

Ralph was one of a kind never bashful, a pitchman, a host introducing guests on the radio, a salesman in marketing, Ralph could do it all. Ralph worked at sportsradioservice.com from 2002-2010.  RIP Ralph we can only imagine your introducing saints and angels now in the big podcast in the sky.
