Ducks Beat Sharks 5-1, Snap Four-Game Winning Streak for San Jose

San Jose Sharks center Ryan Donato (16) chases Anaheim Ducks center Isac Lundestrom (48) in the third period at SAP Center in San Jose on Tue Apr 6, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks failed to keep pace with the team above them in the West Division, dropping Monday night’s home contest against the visiting Anaheim Ducks 5-1. Patrick Marleau scored the lone goal for San Jose who failed to bridge the five point gap between the fourth place Arizona and themselves with the cellar-dwelling Ducks (12-21-7) in town. John Gibson made 34 saves for Anaheim and Adam Henrique, Maxime Comtois, Isaac Lundestrom, David Backes and Nicolas Deslauriers lit the lamp for the Ducks.

The Sharks (17-17-4) entered play Monday night with four consecutive wins in their pockets and newfound swagger that they could be in the playoff chase. While the box score will make the contest look close, San Jose came out flat, a surprise given they had two days off in a season filled back-to-backs and three games in five night scenarios.

Just 5:55 into play the Ducks caught San Jose flat-footed. Henrique worked his way into the center lane unmarked, took a Danton Heinen pass and beat Martin Jones for his 11th goal. If that wasn’t an indicator the Sharks didn’t have “it” Monday night, the Ducks 31st ranked power play struck 24 seconds into the second period on Comtois 11th of the year.

Marleau answered with a Sharks power play goal of their own on some pretty passing just over a minute later to make it 2-1 Anaheim, but in a sequence where the Sharks thought the puck was frozen put Jones never had possession of it, Lundestrom was able to take the puck behind the net and put it in on the other side 2:44 into the second.

Emblematic of the night San Jose was having, Ducks pugilist Nicolas Deslauriers had a Troy Terry shot bounce off a Sharks defenseman horizontally and land perfectly on his stick. Even a player known for what his hands do off the stick more than on it could finish this play with the gaping net, so in it went for Deslauriers’ fourth with 4:41 left in the second. David Backes scored an empty netter early in the third period for the final score.

If the rest made the Sharks rusty, then their next contest may be of concern. The Sharks are off until Friday when they welcome the Los Angeles Kings to town for a Friday-Saturday set. The two games will be the final two before Monday’s trade deadline.

Notes: Marc-Edouard Vlasic was out of the line-up Monday, Christian Jaros took his place and made his Sharks debut…Jeffrey Viel and Anaheim’s Desluariers dropped the gloves at the 13:51 mark of the first period…Sharks coach Bob Boughner was aggressive with the goalie pull, pulling Martin Jones with over seven minutes left trailing by three…Noah Gregor returned to the lineup, his first game action since March 6th.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast report with Rich Perez: Mariota signs $3.5 M one yr deal with Raiders

Marcus Mariota quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders on the run against the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec 17, 2020 signed for a one year deal with the Raiders on Wed Mar 24, 2021 (AP News file photo)

LAS VEGAS– The signing of Las Vegas Raiders back up quarterback Marcus Mariota shows that Mariota wants to stay with the Raiders organization. Mariota signs for a little more $3.5 million than what the Raiders wanted to pay. Mariota and starting quarterback Derek Carr are always working out quarterback situations together and head coach Jon Gruden was one who pushed to make this deal happen.

Mariota is a mobile quarterback and has that going for him a little more than Carr but their very close in what kinds of quarterbacks that they are and their going to be a great one and two quarterbacks going into this season. When Carr got the groin injury last season and Mariota stepped in against the Los Angeles Chargers Mariota although he played only one game for the Raiders threw for 226 yards, went 17-28 and has all the flare of stepping in and taking over for Carr if it’s necessary.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Washington Football team Replacing traditional Cheerleaders

Washington Football team Replacing traditional Cheerleaders

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The Washington Football team (once the Redskins) continues making changes after their name change last year. This week they announced they would be doing away with the Cheerleading team, the traditional way and will instead make it a coed dance group. Expect some other teams in the future to follow the Washington team.

26 of the 32 NFL teams include cheerleader’s squad in their franchise. How important is this to the average football fan, viewer, and remains to be seen. I expect ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick to have a statue erected on his likeness, because, like him or not, he basically started all these changes in the NFL and other sports with a simple knee he took in protest.

For the record: at the time it happened, I defended his right to free speech under the first amendment, and at the same time I exercise my equal right to free speech when I said I did not like what he did; but I respected it and understood his motivation.

The Washington Football team recently is making news where they do not wanted to make news. After all, they play in the weakest division in the NFL. The NFC East where last season they finished in first place, but with a 7-9 record a .438 winning percentage. They are re-branding this team in, but we all know the overwhelming majority of NFL fans could care less what you name your team, what cheerleaders you have or the color or logos of the uniform.

Even for some Raiders fans, they even travel from Oakland to Las Vegas when they play now, that is important for them, winning and losing is where the passion in football resides, not in these other issues.

In this instance of the Washington Football team and what changes they had made so far, I like to use the iconic quote by the legendary owner of the Oakland Raiders, now Las Vegas Raiders “Just win, baby” by Mr. Al Davis. Sports is part of the “very interesting”, era in history that we are living today.

Today there are arbitrary decisions made in many different places, not only in Sports. Some make sense, others are ridiculous. There was a time when sports were not intertwined with the world of entertainment as much as today.

Social media has facilitated these “changes” in our society. There is a “cancel culture” debate going on for a while now. Recently some of Dr. Seuss, children’s books have been cancelled or eliminated by some.

Like EBay which recently stop selling them, while they still sell Mein Kampf, or books on how to build a nuclear bomb as well as other highly offensive and dangerous books. I also heard in stadiums prior to games many rap songs that literally insult women and call them names. I would never use those names against anyone.

We should never be afraid of information and knowledge; after all, we all die still learning. I believe in more books not less, but as a free society it is very dangerous to be selective in what we “cancel.” I strongly believe in free speech and I can appreciate it passionately, because where I came from, that does not exist.

Some people take it for granted, not me. But I also see a lot of stuff that is silly and stupid. Sports are one of the biggest escapes we have, and still make us feel like kids. No country has a perfect history.

We learned from our mistakes of the past, if we “erase” all of our history, (bad or good) that is not smart for future generations. They are going to have machines making decisions for them, they will be ‘brain dead’ and that is not Kosher. But here is the good news. Most of the cancelling has been done by private companies, not the Government, Thank God.

Stay well and stay tuned.

Brady claims 7th ring, Bucs rout KC in Super Bowl LV 31-9

Different uniform, same results.

After winning six NFL championships with New England, Tom Brady added a seventh ring to his collection Sunday after leading Tampa Bay past Kansas City 31-9 in Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

Brady was also selected as the game’s most valuable player, his fifth overall, breaking a tie with Joe Montana. The 43-year-old signal caller completed 21 of 29 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns – two of them to his old Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski and the other to Antonio Brown.

Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones combined for 150 rushing yards, and assistant Todd Bowles’ defensive game plan effectively shut off the Chiefs’ passing lanes and kept KC off balance throughout the game. Bucs linebacker Devin White racked up 12 tackles, plus an interception late in the fourth quarter.

Kansas City didn’t help itself by being flagged 10 times for 110 penalty yards, and the Chiefs were 3 of 13 on third down conversions.

After Kansas City jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 52-yard Harrison Butker field goal, the Buccaneers responded with an 8-yard TD pass from Brady to Gronkowski. At 6:05 of the second quarter, Brady found Gronkowski for a 17-yard scoring strike.

Butker booted a 34-yard field goal with 1:01 left in the second quarter, but the Bucs found the end zone with six seconds left in the half on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Brown. The Buccaneers led 21-6 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Butker’s third field goal – a 52-yarder – pulled the Chiefs to within 21-9. Tampa Bay finished the scoring when Fournette ran in from 27 yards out midway through the third quarter, and with 2:46 to go in the quarter, Ryan Succop tacked on a 52-yard field goal.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was held to 270 yards 26 of 49 passes, was intercepted twice and sacked three times. It was the first time he didn’t throw a touchdown pass in a game since Sept. 29, 2019, against Detroit in a 34-30 win over the Lions.

The Weekend performed at halftime, and the National Anthem was sang by country singer Eric Church and R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan. H.E.R. performed “America The Beautiful” in the pregame ceremonies.

Super Bowl LV podcast post game show with Barbara Mason: Brady–Kiss the seventh ring; Bucs blowout Chiefs

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady (12) talks in the ear hole of Kansas City Chiefs strong safety Tyrann Mathieu after throwing a touchdown in the first half of Super Bowl LV in Tampa Bay (AP News photo)

On the Super Bowl LV podcast post game show with Barbara Mason:

#1 Barbara a total blowout in Tampa Bay tonight for Kansas City no defense and no offense on either side of the ball.

#2 After two touchdowns were scored for Tampa Bay in the second quarter and a half time score of 21-6 would you say that was indicator for what was to be the outcome of this game?

#3 The Chiefs looked like they just couldn’t do anything with Tom Brady and the Bucs all night long?

#4 Brady didn’t even have to throw for 300 yards he threw for over 200 yards and still burned the Chiefs with three touchdowns.

#5 For Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes 238 yards and no touchdowns a really disappointing game to finish to season for Mahomes and the Chiefs

Super Bowl LV podcast with Jessica Kwong: Mahomes focusing on winning a second Super Bowl; Do Bucs have the home field advantage?

Flashback Sun Feb 2, 2020 Miami Gardens Super Bowl 54 and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes hoisting the Super Bowl Trophy after defeating the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes is shooting for his second Super Bowl victory this Sun Feb 7, 2021 in Tampa Bay (AP News file photo)

Super Bowl LV podcast with Jessica:

#1 Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes says that he’s not focusing on Tom Brady’s record of ten Super Bowl appearances and six Super Bowl championships but just a chance to win his second Super Bowl.

#2 Mahomes said that every time he hits the field his mindset is on winning the game and the goal is to win as many Super Bowls as possible.

#3 From the looks of it that has been Brady’s accomplished goal and for Mahomes he’s been staying very consistent with the kind of games that he’s been having as the Chiefs finished the regular season with a 15-2 record and first in the AFC Conference.

#4 Jessica this will be the first time that a Super Bowl team will play host on their home field. The closest that ever came was when the San Francisco 49ers played the Miami Dolphins in 1985 and the game was at Stanford Stadium but not quite the home stadium. This has to be pretty special for the Buccaneers to host this game.

#5 Practice has looked well for both teams as the prepare for Super Bowl Sunday. The Vegas line has the Chiefs by three in what is expected to be a razor close game.
