49ers Seek to Get Their Revenge on Division Leading Cardinals

By: Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers are 1-1 in the Blaine Gabbert era, as they fell last week 29-13 to the Seahawks. Their record now stands at 3-7 on the season, tied for last in the NFC.

This week the 49ers get a rematch against the (8-2) Arizona Cardinals, a team that blew them out 47-7 in the third week of the season. However, there is a different quarterback under center from the blowout that saw Colin Kaepernick throw four interceptions, including two for touchdowns in the first two drives of the game.

Kaepernick won’t be facing one of the best defenses this week, as he has been placed on the injured reserve list after receiving surgery on his non-throwing shoulder earlier this week. Instead, Gabbert will get the start against the Cardinals, a team he has never faced in his NFL career.

Earlier in the week, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Tyrann Mathieu commented on the difference of having Gabbert under center for the 49ers, “it seems like Gabbert has a little better grip on what’s going on. He knows where the ball needs to go. I think he gives the [49ers] a better option going forward”.

The Cardinals have been on a tear this year, with the second best point differential at +120 and the highest scoring offense, averaging 33.6 points per game. Quarterback, Carson Palmer, is returning to old form, as he passed the 3,000-yard mark on the season in last week’s win over the Bengals.

It will be interesting to see how Gabbert handles the Cardinals, but like last week Arizona is too strong for the 49ers. However, with a different quarterback it will be a much closer game, assuming Gabbert doesn’t throw four picks as well.

Raiders head to Music City for tussle with Titans

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon

OAKLAND — Suffering a three-game losing streak in the NFL is like losing 10 games in the NBA. It’s hard to come back from it, but its doable.

The Raiders (4-6), are hoping that a trip to Nashville to face the (2-8) Titans Sunday in Week 12 will get the team trending in the right direction after whispers of playoff talk surfaced after their second-straight win (a 34-20 victory over the New York Jets), three weeks ago.

Oakland averaged 35.3 points per game during a three-game stretch from Oct. 25-Nov. 8 and were in the top-five in most offensive categories but after last week’s 18-13 loss at Detroit, Oakland fell back down to earth and were held to a season-low 214 total yards.

Coming into the contest, Detroit allowed an average of 384.2 total yards per game.

Starting quarterback Derek Carr failed to throw a touchdown for the first time since Week 1, which was a surprise. Carr finished 13-of-25 for 169 passing yards. For the season, Carr is currently tied for fourth in the NFL with Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning with 21 touchdown passes and just six interceptions with a 99.4 quarterback rating.

The biggest surprise was that exciting rookie wide receiver Amari Cooper was held by a putrid Lions’ secondary to just one catch on four targets. Cooper has not gone over a 100 yards receiving since Week 7 (a 37-29 win at San Diego). Oakland needs to  find more ways to get Cooper more involved in the offense early.

AFC rushing yards leader Latavius Murray (157 carries, 706 yards and four touchdowns), has been quiet the last two weeks, just managing 75 yards rushing on 25 carries. Murray scored Oakland’s lone touchdown Sunday at Detroit.

After giving up 68 points over the past two games, Oakland’s defense has played well in Detroit but didn’t produce a turnover and allowed the Lions to drive 80 yards in nine plays for the go-ahead touchdown by Detroit starting quarterback Matthew Stafford in the fourth quarter.

Tennessee is coming off a bye week and has won the last three games in the series versus Oakland, but are tied with the worst record in the NFL.

The Titans are 1-2 under interim head coach Mike Mularkey, who took over for the fired Ken Whisenhunt. Mularkey has seen Tennessee drop to last in the AFC with 18.2 points per game and just totaled 23 points in two games.

Titans’ rookie starting quarterback Marcus Mariota was sacked four times in Tennessee’s 19-13 loss at Jacksonville. Mariota scored Tennessee’s lone touchdown, but has not thrown a touchdown since his four-touchdown passing performance in a 34-28 overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 8 at the Mercedes Superdome.

NFL Podcast with Tony Renteria: Tomsula wasn’t the one who picked these players the GM did

On the NFL podcast with Tony San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula was blamed for the team’s failures and there has been talk that Tomsula’s job is hanging in the balance. It was team general manager Trent Baalke who gave Tomsula the roster of players that he has to work with. When Tomsula walked into this job he had a number of first stringers who retired, players who didn’t work out because of off field legal issues, or had or feared injuries.

49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert labored with the offense in Seattle in his second game starting since 49ers starter Colin Kaepernick was placed on injured reserve. Gabbert saw the Hawks defense shut down the San Francisco offense and he wanted to quickly put this trip to Seattle behind him.

San Francisco 49ers report: Getting over the Kap; shoulder surgery ends 49er QB season maybe released after the season

by David Zizmor

SANTA CLARA–San Francisco 49ers quarterback  Colin Kaepernick will have left shoulder surgery. The 49ers placed him on the injured reserve list. He is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday in Vail Colorado. Kaepernick is suffering from a torn labrum.

Kaepernick threw for all but one game thus far on the 49ers schedule and he sat out two weeks ago against the Atlanta Falcons when backup Blaine Gabbert got the start in the 49ers victory 17-16. The 49ers promoted backup quarterback Dylan Thompson from the practice squad.

Thompson will serve as Gabbert’s back up in Seattle on Sunday. Kaepernick was probable for this weekend’s game but was a scratch when he was on the injury reserve list on Wednesday. Kaepernick’s performance has suffered for most of the season and the 49ers had lost a good share of their games with Kaepernick under center. There has been talk the 49ers could release Kaepernick after this season is over.

Raiders try to rebound in Motown

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon

photo credit Wikipedia Matt Stafford in 2014 Detroit Lions

OAKLAND — Last Sunday’s 30-14 home loss to the visiting Minnesota Vikings certainly left a bad taste in the Raiders’ mouth dropping Oakland to 4-5 on the season.

In a game where Oakland racked up 371 yards of total offense, the Raiders managed just two second quarter touchdowns.

Raiders’ starting quarterback Derek Carr, who had thrown for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in each of the last three games, was neutralized by the Vikings by throwing two interceptions, one in the end zone to Vikings’ cornerback Terrance Newman in the fourth quarter that iced the game.

Carr had just four interceptions coming into the game.

The Raiders look to snap their current two-game losing streak when they travel to Detroit to face the Lions Sunday at 10:00 a.m. PT.

With the year-long suspension of starting outside linebacker Aldon Smith, Oakland lost arguably its best defensive player not named Charles Woodson.

But over the past two games, Oakland has been torched by the opposition’s running game.

Steelers’ running back DeAngelo Williams gashed the Raiders for 170 yards and two touchdowns in Pittsburgh’s 38-35 victory over Oakland in Week 9.

Adrian Peterson registered 203 yards on the ground, including a crushing 80-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter last Sunday. The hole in the Raiders’ defense that Peterson ran through was big enough for a truck to run through.

Detroit (2-7) has been a relatively dumpster fire this year with in-season firings of front office personnel and assistant coaches, but are coming off a 18-16 victory over Green Bay at Lambeau Field Sunday sending the Packers to their third-straight loss.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns  helping Detroit pick up its first win in Green Bay since December 1991, snapping a 24-game road losing streak.

The Lions punished Packers’ starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers by sacking the former league MVP three times, and frustrated Green Bay’s offense all day by playing aggressive defense.

Stafford threw for 391 yards and four touchdowns, and wide receiver Calvin Johnson had nine catches for 214, including the game-winning touchdowns with 39 seconds left in Detroit’s 28-27 victory on Dec. 18, 2011 at Oakland.

The win was Detroit’s third straight over Oakland.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Jeremy Kahn: Aldon already counting the days to get back; Tadich Grill owner says disputing family members are not partners of the business

by Jeremy Kahn

ALAMEDA–On the Raiders podcast a discussion on the recently suspended linebacker Aldon Smith who says he’s ready to get started with rehab for substance abuse. The question is can he overcome it and stay with it in 2016 when he returns? Smith says he’ll be a changed man after rehab and says he’s looking forward to getting back to work with the Raiders.

Former Oakland Raider the late Gene Upshaw whose widow Terri Upshaw and sons have no contact with their father or grandfather former owner of Tadich Grill Steve Buich because according to Terri her father says she married a black man. Upshaw and she were cut out from the family. Buich released a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle saying the family breakup between his daughter and him was not over race but because of Upshaw’s “character”.

Terri insists it was race and that Buich doesn’t even want to meet his grandsons. Terri has said that the only contact that she’s had with her family is just with cousins on facebook. Meanwhile Terri’s brother Michael says the parties who are having this problem are neither owners of Tadich Grill in San Francisco or Washington and that the grill doesn’t practice discrimination. Terri brought this issue up about being banned by the family after Tadich expanded their business to Washington recently as Terri lives in nearby Arlington Virginia.

Terri thought it was about time to bring up the fact that her father Steve banned her from the family because Upshaw was black and that she was no longer welcome in the family. Terri has attempted once to try and communicate with the family but says they will not speak to her even to this day.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Gabbert ready for the big test at Century Link this Sunday

On the 49ers podcast today, the 49ers are coming off a one point win against the Atlanta Falcons two weeks ago at Levi’s Stadium. They had the bye this past week and are headed to Seattle to face the Seahawks. They have lost two of their last three games.

The 49ers 3-6 have a huge task in front of them in playing this Sunday at Century Link Field in Seattle and those fans are like the 12th man.  After defeating the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday by a point this will be a different task for 49ers quarterback Blain Gabbert. It will be up to him to deliver and this is his big chance to prove himself against Seattle.

49ers Hope to Turn Around Struggles in Seattle

by Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers return to action this Sunday, as they travel to Seattle to take on the Seahawks. Seattle has faced their own struggles as well this season with a 4-5 record heading into Sunday. However, three of their five losses have been by less than four points.

It was just a month ago where the Seahawks blew out the 49ers 20-3 on Monday Night Football in Santa Clara. The 49ers offense couldn’t get anything going, even though their defense held them in the game for the majority. San Francisco will have someone new under center from a month ago, as Blaine Gabbert will be starting his second straight.

He won his first start of the year with a 17-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. He led two touchdown drives, throwing for 185 yards on 60% pass percentage. The 49ers offense looked revived with Gabbert under center, finally having a quarterback that can get the ball into their receivers hands.

Gabbert’s biggest challenge will come to his right as he will have to avoid Richard Sherman. Sherman hasn’t done much yet this year, with eight pass deflections and no interceptions. Earl Thomas leads the mighty Seahawks secondary with three picks on the year. The 49ers will also be using their make shift running back core, with Shaun Draughn expected to get the majority of carries once again.

San Francisco wasn’t able to stop Marshawn Lynch in their first matchup, who will be looking to have a field day come Sunday.

Seattle has just dominated the 49ers at home in recent years, as San Francisco hasn’t won in the pacific northwest since 2011. The streak will continue this year, as expect Seattle to just dominate the banged up 49ers defense. Gabbert should be able to get something going offensively however.

Oakland Raiders report: Raiders say they’ll see how Aldon Smith rehabs suspended one year for substance abuse

by Jeremy Kahn and Joe Hawkes Beamon

photo credit AP Raiders Aldon Smith

ALAMEDA–Aldon Smith who was busted for DUI on August 6th and faces DUI charges in Santa Clara it was at that time the San Francisco 49ers released Smith. Smith had served a nine game suspension for DUI during the 2014 season for substance abuse. This time in 2015 as an Oakland Raider Smith has been found to be a substance abuser again and will serve a one year suspension immediately according to the Raiders.

The Raiders really counted on Smith this season and was hoping that he finally would break through his drinking habit but he just couldn’t handle it any longer. Smith said a in a statement released on Tuesday “First I want to thank the Raiders, my teammates, the fans, our coaches and our owner in supporting me throughout all of this. I’m taking this time to work on myself and become the man I need to be. I had lost my love for the game and it led me to some poor choices, but I’m thankful to the Raider organization for believing in me this season and will continue to get better myself and grow from my experiences. I look forward to rejoining the team next year.”

Smith will lose $323, 529 in per game salary, he’ll miss out on the $514,000 base salary and $1.75 million in roster bonuses. The Raiders will depend on Khalil Mack and Mario Edwards to pick up the slack where Smith left off. The Raiders have another problem with linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong who taunted and barked at a Pittsburgh Police Dog when the team was at Heinz Field. The action by Armstrong is considered a felony and if prosecuted and convicted Armstrong could face a seven year prison sentence and a $15,000 fine. Sources say that the Pittsburgh Police are prepared to prosecute.

NFL Podcast with Tony Renteria: Manning injury could last at least two weeks, Browns give Johnny Football a try; Rams to start Keenum

On the NFL podcast with Tony Renteria the Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning will be on the shelf for some time as Manning is suffering from Plantar Fascia in his right foot making it painful for the veteran quarterback to set back in the pocket or just to move around. Manning had been complaining about the pain but after being diagnosed he was told he need to rest the foot.

Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Josh McCown whose suffering from multiple injuries will be replaced by Johnny Manziel. The Browns had lost five straight and are looking for some better effort with Manziel in the starting line up.

The St.Louis Rams will sit their starter Nick Foles and go with Case Keenum at quarterback. Head coach Jeff Fisher said it was not the fault of Foles but the team effort on offense was lacking and a change was needed. Fisher said the quarterback position starts with the offense and Fisher said changing quarterbacks was necessary.
