San Francisco 49ers-San Diego Chargers game preview: What to Watch For 49ers at Chargers

By: Joe Lami

AP file photo: Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (6) under pressure from the San Diego Chargers Adrian Phillips (31) from Wed Aug 28, 2016 pre season game. Bridgewater was injured in non contact practice on Aug 31 tearing his ACL, dislocating his left knee and other significant damage his injury has created an opening at quarterback for the Vikings

The final game of the NFL pre-season is here for the San Francisco 49ers and there are many questions still left unanswered. The first of which and that has been grabbing the most attention is who is going to be the starting quarterback. After a very unimpressive performance in his first action of the pre-season last week, Colin Kaepernick has a lot of ground to make up on Blaine Gabbert.

Surprisingly, it could be an injured Teddy Bridgewater that decides the fate of Kaepernick as a 49er. On Wednesday, Bridgewater suffered a torn ACL and had even further damage to his knee forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2016 season. With Minnesota on the prowl for a starting QB, this could be Kaepernick’s second chance at a starting role.

Kaepernick stirred up some controversy last Friday refusing to stand during the national anthem due to race issues. Causing a national debate, Kaepernick definitely brought attention to the issue. Opponents of his actions are furious, stating a disrespect to the people that help make this country free, mainly the military. Thursday night’s game against the San Diego Chargers, San Diego will be hosting their 28th annual Salute to the Military night, which of course will put even more eyes on Kaepernick.

The quarterback battle isn’t the only thing to keep your eyes on for Thursday, as there are a few starting spots available on the offensive line. Anthony Davis is making his return to the 49ers after sitting last season out, while Josh Garnett is looking to be named a starter after San Francisco drafted the Stanford Guard with the 28th overall selection of the 2016 draft. Both Garnett and Davis are battling for the starting Left Guard position.

While Garnett has been impressive this pre-season, it would be a shock to see him named as a starter, even to him. While speaking with him earlier in camp, Garnett loved his progress, but also knows his game needs a lot to perform at a high calibre in the NFL.

Despite the outcome of the game, there will be many stories to follow that will make a usual pre-season game fun to watch.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Kaepernick is not making any kind of false statements about why he’s sitting for the anthem

file photo: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be front and center for his position on the national anthem when the 49ers play in San Diego on Thursday night in the final pre season game at Qualcomm Stadium

On the 49ers podcast with Dave; The NFL offices reportedly are upset with 49ers Colin Kaepernick’s plan to sit down for the national anthem and presidential hopeful Donald Trump said that Kaepernick “should leave and go find another country to live in.” The NFL offices can stick it as far as I’m concerned who cares what the NFL offices says and who would think the NFL offices would come out and support anything that Kaepernick says.

The NFL’s office job is to try to limit Kaepernick’s position as much as possible they’ve been the opposite as much as possible even in the Ray Rice case or the deflate gate case their always looking to diminish controversy as much as possible. So if Kaepernick is doing something for cause and effort controversy the league office is always going to come out on the opposite side.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Kaepernick will do a sit down anthem in heavily militarized San Diego this Thursday nite

AP file photo: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers meet at midfield following their pre season game August 26th

On That’s Amaury’s podcast this Thursday is the highly anticipated game and it’s not the exhibition game with the San Francisco 49ers in San Diego that is of discussion but 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who made it known that he will sit down during the national anthem before this coming Thursday’s final pre season game at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego against the Chargers. San Diego is a heavily militarized city with a number of veterans who are based in San Diego this should be a real cluster when the fans are all over Kaepernick for not standing during the anthem.

Amaury said on his podcast that one thing that unites this country is the national anthem and the flag. Amaury wrote about this and he said  this is not the right decision by Kaepernick. There is free speech in this country Kap can say whatever he wants however on Tuesday the Chief of Police of San Francisco is asking for an apology from Kaepernick which he and his department didn’t receive. Kaepernick says he’s protesting the anthem because of the discrimination that blacks face and for those who were shot by police without just cause. Kaepernick who is not having a great pre season could get cut by the 49ers after Thursday’s game and quarterback Blaine Gabbert has been named the starting quarterback for the season opener on September 12 vs. The Los Angeles Rams.

Raiders gear up for Seahawks in preseason finale

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon
Sports Radio Service Writer

AP file photo: Oakland Raiders wide receiver Michael Crabtree leaps for a pass thrown to him in Raiders camp back on June 15th

OAKLAND, Calif — The preseason comes to a close for the Raiders Thursday night, when they host the Seattle Seahawks at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. PT.

Oakland (1-2), fell to the visiting Tennessee Titans, 27-14, last Saturday at Oakland-Alameda Coliseum.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr led Oakland’s first-team offense to two first-half touchdown drives of 58 and 75 yards that ended with touchdown passes to rookie running back and DeAndre Washington (6 yards), and wide receiver Amari Cooper (29 yards).

Carr finished with a 133.8 quarterback rating after completing 12-of-18 passes for 169 yards, and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Michael Crabtree caught a pinpoint, 41-yard pass from Carr on the Raiders’s first offensive drive of the game that setup Oakland’s first touchdown.

Don’t expect to see Carr or any of the Raiders’s first-team offense to take the field Thursday night.

Backups Matt McGloin and Connor Cook (who both threw interceptions against Tennessee) will get the majority of the snaps from center, while Seth Roberts (1 catch, 15 yards versus Tennessee), Johnny Holton, and K.J. Brent (combined for 6 catches and 108 yards versus Tennessee), will get long looks for the team’s third- and fourth-string wide receivers.

Along with Washington, second-year man George Atkinson III and rookie Jalen Richard

Defensively, Tennessee bludgeoned Oakland with 276 yards offensively,  (106 on the ground), in the first half. Running backs DeMarco Murray and rookie Derrick Henry combined for 20 carries, 89 yards rushing, and two touchdowns. The duo found gaping holes in a Raiders defense, that has had its share of problems stopping the run during the preseason.

Russell Wilson threw a pair of touchdowns in Seattle’s 27-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys last Thursday at CenturyLink Field. Wilson led Seattle’s first-team into the second half, scoring on four of the team’s final five possessions.

Wilson found wide receiver Paul Richardson on a crossing route for a 9-yard score in the second quarter, then after scrambling to keep the play alive following a juggle, he found wide receiver Tyler Lockett for another 9-yard score in the third quarter.

That touchdown to Lockett would be Wilson’s final play of the game, who finished 16-of-21 passing for 192 yards and two touchdowns.

Like Oakland, Seattle (2-1)  would like to get out of the preseason with minimal injuries, so expect the Seahawks to sit Wilson and their first-team offense and go with rookie quarterback Trevone Boykin at quarterback and backups for the majority of the night.

After Thursday, Oakland will need to make their final roster cuts to the NFL-mandated 53-man active roster by Sept. 3.

Oakland will then turn their attention to  Week 1 and their season opener on Sept. 11 against the Saints in New Orleans at 10:00 a.m. PT.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Colin Kaepernick and the National Anthem

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

tmz.com file photo: San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick 7 sits during the national anthem by the equipment boxes and Gatorade cans (see the red arrow) before last Saturday night’s game vs. the Green Bay Packers at Levis Stadium

SANTA CLARA–I defend Colin Kaepernick right not to stand during the National Anthem, because this country does not considers that a crime. He has not violated any laws and he(as everybody else)in this country has the right to free speech and to demonstrate.

But. I stand everytime the National Anthem is played before a sporting event, because many people died for the right of the 49ers quarterback, so he can have the freedom not to stand.

I stand up because I, as a minority, was given the opportunity to come to the United States and enjoy the freedoms and opportunity that my country of origin never granted me, as well as is the case for millions of other people who came to this “unique country in the world”.

I stand because although this is not a perfect country, I love and respect all the principals for which this country stands for.

And finally I stand for the 49ers quarterback who if he doesn’t play well he might have to sit more than just during the pregame National Anthem, but during the actual game.

Oakland Raiders commentary: Carr impresses, but Titans get win over Raiders

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon
Sports Radio Service Writer

AP photo: Oakland Raiders running back DeAndre Washington gets broadsided by the Tennessee Titans linebacker Sean Spence in the second half of Saturday night’s pre season game at the Oakland Coliseum

OAKLAND, Calif — Even though the Raiders lost to the Tennessee Titans 27-14 in both team’s third preseason game Saturday night at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum, it was good to see Derek Carr and the Raiders’ first-team offense finish off drives with getting the ball into the end zone.

Carr, who led to the Raiders to just six points in the previous six quarters he appeared in during the preseason, went 12-for-18 for 169 yards passing and two touchdowns against the Titans while playing the entire first half.

After Tennessee took an early 7-0 lead behind a DeMarco Murray one-yard run, Oakland’s signal-caller drove the Raiders’ first-team offense 58 yards in seven plays for their first touchdown of the game (and of the preseason) as a unit, a 6-yard toss to rookie running back DeAndre Washington on an angle route out of the backfield to the tie game, 7-7.

Washington, along with fellow running back Jalen Richard, combined for 95 yards of total offense, but the diminutive Washington did cough up the ball in the third quarter  after taking a huge hit from Titans linebacker David Bass which resulted in a 47-yard fumble recovery by fellow linebacker Sean Spence that gave Tennessee a 27-14.

But Carr was just getting started.

Following a Ryan Succop 30-yard field goal that pushed Tennessee’s lead, 10-7, Carr engineered a six-play, 75-yard drive culminating a picture-perfect, 29-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Amari Cooper down the Titans’ sideline and hitting Cooper in the back of the end zone that gave Oakland (1-2) a 14-10 lead shortly before halftime.

Replay would confirm Cooper kept both feet in bounds. Cooper finished with three catches for 52 yards.

Earlier in the game, Carr placed another beautifully thrown pass to his other top target, wide receiver Michael Crabtree for 41 yards.

It would be Crabtree’s only catch of the game.

In the midst of Oakland’s first drive to begin the third quarter, Carr would give way to backup Matt McGloin.

McGloin, and third-string rookie quarterback Connor Cook, proceeded to throw two interceptions to Tennessee’s second- and third-string defenders.

What I wasn’t impressed with was Oakland’s first-team defense, which gave up 276 yards (106 on the ground), in the first half.

Tennessee’s Murray (8 carries for 40 yards) and rookie running back Derrick Henry (12 carries for 49 yards) did the most damage to Oakland’s rush defense. Tennessee found gaping holes that turned two-yard gains, into five-yard gains.

It was the second time this preseason that Oakland had issues with beefy, powerful runners.

Oakland struggled to curtail Green Bay’s Eddie Lacy, surrendering 45 yards on nine carries and a touchdown in Oakland’s 20-12 loss at Lambeau Field last Thursday.

Oakland’s first-team defense never forced the Titans to punt, allowing Tennessee to score three touchdowns and two field goals in two quarters.

It wasn’t until their final drive of the third quarter that Oakland’s starting unit forced Tennessee’s offense to punt.

The secondary had trouble defending the passing game of the Titans.

Tennessee (2-1) starting quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 9-for-16 passes for 170 yards, 65 of those yards to veteran wide receiver, Andre Johnson who will be one of Mariota’s go-to guys this season.

On the Titans’ second drive of the game, the 35-year-old former Miami Hurricane had consecutive catches of 13, 38, and 14 yards.

It was vintage Johnson.

Johnson finished with three catches for 65 yards, while promising rookie wide receiver Tajae Sharpe (fantasy football sleeper), hauled in a 60-yard, catch-and-run pass that helped setup Tennessee’s first score of the game.

Oakland finishes the preseason at home Thursday against the Seattle Seahawks, with the starters unlikely to play.

Oakland Raiders Saturday game wrap: Titans spoil Raiders preseason home opener

By Jeremy Kahn

AP photo: Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) looks for a receiver in pre season game three against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday night at the Oakland Coliseum

OAKLAND-With just one preseason game remaining on the schedule, the Oakland Raiders finally made their preseason debut at the Oakland Coliseum.

Derek Carr went 12-for-18 for 169 yards and two touchdowns, but it was enough and the Tennessee Titans defeated the Raiders 27-14 at the Coliseum.

Carr found Amari Cooper for a fantastic 29-yard touchdown pass that was reviewed by the officials, but stood to give the Raiders their only lead of the game.

That was not the only nice pass on the evening by Carr, as he found Michael Crabtree for a 41 yard pass play down to the Titans 10-yard live that setup a DeAndre Washington touchdown pass from Carr that tied up the game.

On their first drive of the game, Marcus Mariota drove the Titans all the way down the field and it ended on a DeMarco Murray one-yard touchdown run. Murray’s touchdown run was setup by a fantastic pass from Mariota to Tajae Sharpe that went right through the hands of Sean Smith for a 60-yard gain down to the Raiders four-yard line.

Following the Washington touchdown pass from Carr that tied up the game at seven apiece, the Titans drove down the field and Ryan Succop kicked a 34-yard field goal to give them a 10-7 lead.

After the Raiders went three and out on their next possession, Titans led behind a huge run from Murray added another Succop field goal, this one was from 30 yards to lengthen the lead.

Carr, Cooper and Washington handled the ensuing Raiders drive, as in the end, Cooper was on the receiving of a fantastic thrown pass by Carr for a 29-yard touchdown pass to give the Raiders their only lead of the game.

Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Derek Henry showed the Raiders and a National TV audience why he was worthy of the most prestigious award in all of college football, as the former Alabama Crimson Tide running back ran rough shot through the Raiders defense and the end result was a three-yard touchdown run that gave the Titans the lead for good.

Henry led the Titans running game with 12 carries for 49 yards and that one touchdown, to help the Titans to their second victory of the preseason.

Jalen Richard made his first preseason appearance for the Raiders after the missing the first two games with an injury. Richard responded by carrying the ball seven times for 35 yards, and returned two kicks for 57 yards, including a 38-yard return after Murray’s touchdown run on the Titans first series of the game.

The Titans closed out the scoring in the third quarter, as Washington hit by Sean Spence and fumbled the ball, which was picked up by David Bass and returned 47 yards for a touchdown.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Lami: Kaepernick despite football will take a stand and sit during the national anthem

AP photo:  San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick scrambles during the first half of Friday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers at Levis Stadium

On the 49ers podcast with Joe Lami, Colin Kaepernick’s statement about not standing at attention during the national anthem because he won’t stand for a flag that oppresses it’s own citizen’s who are black. Kaepernick while taking a lot of criticism of the stand or in this case non stand will stick with his commitment. Kaepernick who had a rough game on Friday at Levis Stadium throwing for only 14 yards and completing two passes.

Kaepernick has missed three off season practices due to three off season surgeries. Also Kaepernick has missed the first two games of the exhibition due to shoulder injuries but played Friday night in a game that the 49ers were defeated against the Green Bay Packers. The 49ers Blaine Gabbert had two series. With a completion to tight end Garret Celek on the second drive and a five series drive that scored wide receiver Quinton Patton.

Kaepernick makes season debut, but does little on the field in 49ers’ loss to the Pack

Kap scrambles

By Morris Phillips

SANTA CLARA–Colin Kaepernick’s big shot—and likely his only opportunity—to be named the 49ers’ starting quarterback came and went with a whimper.

The 28-year old who spent the off-season recuperating from thumb, knee and shoulder surgeries, then experienced arm fatigue in training camp, made his 2016 debut on Friday against the Packers, and he didn’t do much to impress in slightly less than a quarter of action.

After watching Kaepernick complete two of six passes, two of which were batted at the line of scrimmage, along with some nifty scrambling on broken plays, only one conclusion could be drawn: maybe Kaepernick’s ability to unseat Blaine Gabbert as the starter may have been too much to ask.

According to Kaepernick, the starting job remains up for grabs.  Afterwards, he was plotting his gameplan for the final exhibition.

“I think next game we have to be more productive, put points on the board,” Kaepernick said.  “Ultimately, that’s what you want to do as an offense and as a quarterback.”

The 49ers’ ran seven plays on Kaepernick’s first possession, then went three and out twice. The quick, fruitless possessions put pressure on the 49ers’ defense, who allowed Green Bay to score early in the second quarter. The Pack would go on to add two more touchdowns in the second half, and win 21-10, to improve to 3-0 in the pre-season.

The 49ers possessed the ball 20 minutes, 31 seconds, losing the time of possession battle nearly two-to-one, and threw for just 61 yards while falling to 1-2 with one final exhibition on Thursday at San Diego.

While many teams use the third pre-season game as their regular season dress rehearsal, Coach Chip Kelly elected to sit several of his defensive stars, while limiting the time for both Gabbert and Kaepernick.

The Packers held 13 players out, most notably receiver Jordy Nelson, safety Morgan Burnett, and backup quarterback Brett Hundley. Aaron Rodgers played two series in the first half, his pre-season debut and likely his conclusion as well. Rodgers finished six of nine for 60 yards, leading the Pack on a 14-play drive that tied the score at 7 in the second quarter.

Gabbert started for the 49ers and led the team to a touchdown given a short field on their second possession. But Gabbert wasn’t much on the wow meter either, finishing two of three for 14 yards passing.

“Had some good drives, had some bad drives,” Gabbert said. “Shot ourselves in the foot a couple times and when you’re inconsistent on the offensive side of the ball, you don’t execute at a high level. It shows when you don’t move the ball, you don’t score points, drives stall. We put our defense in some tough positions and ultimately you lose the game.”

If any San Francisco unit bore watching on Friday, it was the offensive line where both guard spots appear to be still up for grabs with the September 12th season opener looming. Andrew Tiller had held the starting spot at right guard through camp, but was replaced in the starting lineup on Friday by Anthony Davis. Center Daniel Kilgore and right tackle Trent Brown flanked Davis, opposite left tackle Joe Staley and left guard Zane Beedles. Rookie first round pick Joshua Garnett played extensively, but may not be far enough along to unseat Beedles for the opener against the Rams.

Carlos Hyde saw his most extensive pre-season action but was removed when he exhibited concussion symptoms in the second quarter. Hyde finished with 30 yards rushing on four carries, including a 27-yard jaunt in the first quarter.

Bruce Ellington started in the slot receiver spot but was felled by a hamstring injury while fielding a punt, leaving his availability for the opener up in the air. If Ellington can’t go, DeAndrew White could be the starter at that critical spot.

“I don’t know what the medical diagnosis is nor am I going to talk about one of my friend’s injuries, who knows how severe it is. But I know DeAndrew and Bruce have been working their tails off all throughout the summer and training camp learning that position in the slot,” Gabbert said.

Veteran defensive starters NaVorro Bowman, Ahmad Brooks and Antoine Bethea watched the game in street clothes, as did lineman Arik Armstead and Glenn Dorsey. First round pick DeForrest Buckner got the start at defensive tackle, but has yet to be teamed with former college teammate Armstead along the defensive front.

No timetable was given by Kelly, but the 49ers appear set in the secondary with Eric Reid and Bethea at the safeties, along with corners Tramaine Brock and first-time starter Jimmy Ward.
