It’s Just My Opinion: 49ers, Kaepernick need each other

SANTA CLARA Calif — With incumbent starter Colin Kaepernick most likely opting out of his contract, along with backups Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, and Thad Lewis (who spent the entire 2016 season on injured reserve) all set to be unrestricted free agents, the San Francisco 49ers could find themselves in murky waters at the most important position once free agency opens up on March 9 at 1:00 p.m. PT.

The NFL Scouting Combine begins next week where the likes of Clemson signal-caller Deshaun Watson and North Carolina’s quarterback Mitch Trubisky will be on display for teams in dire need of a quarterback.

San Francisco (2-14), who own the second overall pick in April’s draft, fall in line with the 1-15 Cleveland Browns who have the first overall pick and are in desperate need of a quarterback, after having a league-high six different quarterbacks take a snap in 2016.

New 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco’s fourth head coach in four years), who oversaw the NFL’s highest scoring offense at 33.8 points per game, doesn’t have a quarterback like Matt Ryan to run his uptempo offense currently on the roster for the 49ers.

Ryan passed for 4,944 yards with 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions while taking home the MVP trophy and being named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year for his spectacular season guiding the Atlanta Falcons to NFC Championship, before losing to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

It may be tempting for Shanahan, along with new general manager John Lynch to spend their first round pick on either the aforementioned Watson or Trubisky and let him develop as the 49ers rebuild, but here’s a real idea: Kaepernick should opt-in and remain with the 49ers.

You may ask yourself, why would a natural, gifted athlete like Kaepernick, who started his 10th career game in Super Bowl XLVII (albeit a loss to the Baltimore Ravens), would want to continue a union with an organization that has gone down hill ever since parting ways with Jim Harbaugh in 2015?

It’s quite simple: Kaepernick could resurrect his career under a new regime (while pocketing the $14.5 million he’s owed by opting in for 2017, but gives the team the ability to trade him if the right deal comes along), and the 49ers as an organization, can begin to put the pieces back together with the help of a guy who can unite the locker room.

If you’re Kaepernick, staying with the 49ers gives you the best opportunity to be a starter and San Francisco seems like the more comfortable fit.

I can’t see Kaepernick playing for the Jets, whose head coach in Todd Bowles is entering the 2017 season on the hot seat.

Chicago, who wants to move away from the albatross that is quarterback Jay Cutler, is not an option. The Bears have been rumored to be interested in New England backup Jimmy Garoppolo and hold the third overall pick and could use that pick as trade bait to land the Illinois native.

For what it’s worth, if the Bears do dump Cutler as expected, many NFL insiders and “experts” believe that Cutler would be a fit with the 49ers.

Let me say this, “No.”

Cutler has no business being a starting quarterback in the NFL anymore and should retire, as he’s hinted this offseason.

Scratch off Cleveland and Buffalo from the list of possible landing spots for Kaepernick.

Hue Jackson is enamored with Watson and Trubisky and won’t pass up taking a quarterback this year after trading away Cleveland’s pick (No. 2 overall) last season to Philadelphia that turned into Carson Wentz.

Wentz threw for 3,782 yards and 16 touchdowns during his rookie campaign and looks like the Eagles’ franchise quarterback for the next 10 years.

Buffalo is expected to pick up Tyrod Taylor’s option worth $27.5 million in 2017. Taylor has enjoyed success in two seasons with the Bills, tossing back-to-back seasons with 3,000 yards to go along with 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

In 11 starts last season, Kaepernick threw for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns, and four interceptions, but the 49ers were just 1-10 during that stretch.

Kaepernick showed flashes of the quarterback that had defenses on their heels at times, but the 49ers were just an eye sore to watch that had many fans staying away from Levi Stadium in droves and changing the channel quickly.

But with 72 touchdowns and 30 interceptions (4:3 TD/INT ratio), Kaepernick still has the ability to grow into a serviceable quarterback and with the help of Shanahan, who has a history of working well with average quarterbacks like Brian Hoyer (44 TDs/26 INTs) and Robert Griffin III (42 TDs/26 INTs), Kaepernick could be the right man to lead the 49ers at quarterback in 2017.

Kaepernick, Shanahan, and Lynch all met with each other this past Wednesday, Lynch confirmed while appearing on KNBR radio in San Francisco, as first reported by ESPN Staff Writer Nick Wagoner.

Lynch was coy on the nature of the meeting, but mentioned that the group had a “great discussion,” and “Colin left excited, we left excited and I think as Kyle and I really believe, the evaluation is still very much fluid.”

During Lynch’s introductory news conference, Lynch mentioned that he and Kaepernick developed a strong rapport while the former safety was working as a color analyst on FOX.

Shanahan is certain to sign unrestricted free agent quarterback Matt Schaub, whom Shanahan worked with in Atlanta and Houston. Schaub could help Kaepernick learn the deep offensive playbook that Shanahan has developed over the years in the NFL while working for his father, Mike Shanahan.

The older Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the 49ers’ last Super Bowl title after the 1994 season, before leading the Denver Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowls at the end of the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Quite honestly, Kaepernick should want to opt-in and sign a two-year extension giving him three more years with the 49ers and be the bridge to the real quarterback of the future of the 49ers: USC’s Sam Darnold.

Darnold looked NFL-ready, leading the Trojans to a 52-49 victory over Penn State in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual. The freshman threw for 453 yards and five touchdowns and engineered an 80-yard game-tying drive with less than two minutes remaining.

His 473 total yards broke the Rose Bowl record of 467, which was set by Vince Young during the Texas quarterback’s all-time great performance against USC in 2006.

Darnold is a quarterback that I know Shanahan and Lynch would love to have as the face of the 49ers and build around in the upcoming years.

For now, Kaepernick and the 49ers are better together, rather than apart.

The recent six year signings of new San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan signals that the 49ers are committed for the long haul to these two newest members of the 49ers. Their giving a six year contract to both of these guys that’s a very rare offer and in the NFL that doesn’t happen too often that kind of just goes to show that this team is in a lot of hurt they need a lot of time to recover. 49ers CEO Jed York is finally showing his patience towards the recovery of the process.

When it comes down to it the 49ers know that they can’t go off ship now they’re stuck with these guys so the 49ers are kind of willing to give time in the process and it’s kind of exciting but there’s no guarantee that there will be a good season for the red and gold this year but whatever they can do it should be interesting. The hiring of Shanahan clearly is one of the best coaches around it was kind of weird what kind of happened in the Super Bowl with that Atlanta Falcons team Shanahan was coaching that fell apart and collapsed.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, & Commentary: Brady jersey could be worth a million; Romo will be a plus for LA bullpen; As far as 49ers coaches go Shanahan hopes to stick around

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady throws a pass in action against the Atlanta Falcons during the NFL Super Bowl LI football game on Sunday, Feb. 05, 2017 in Houston. The Patriots defeated the Falcons 34-28 in overtime. (G. Newman Lowrance via AP)

Souvenirs are becoming priceless when I was a kid there was the Baltimore Colts Johnny Unitas when I came to the US in the 60s I was a fan of the Colts back then no telling what a old Unitas jersey is worth today. What New England quarterback Tom Brady has done is incredible he’s been in seven Super Bowls and he’s won five. The value of anything that has anything to do with Brady that jersey his fifth Super Bowl victory jersey is worth a few million dollars. Now the Texas Rangers are looking high and low for that missing jersey and are hoping someone would turn it over with no questions asked.

Former San Francisco Giants reliever Sergio Romo is filling a need that the Los Angeles Dodgers were looking for in their bullpen. Romo is very happy he’s pitching for the Mexican team in the World Baseball Classic next month. He’s happy with what he’s doing he’s still in the Big Leagues. He now joins the Dodgers he joins a great organization. The Dodgers sellout after sellout they draw over four million fans in a season.

Kyle Shanahan who signed on with the 49ers as head coach for the next six years. This six year deal is very unusual for somebody in that position but that’s what he got. The 49ers have been awful the last couple of years and there’s been a lot of turmoil and we talked on this show not too long ago about all the players who get into trouble and get arrested on this team and in addition 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick didn’t have a good season and then the last two coaches Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly were let go after one season. It’s everyone’s hope that Shanahan can stay on at least two to three years and have some success on the job.

Patriots overcome 19-point hole, beat Falcons in first Super Bowl OT 34-28

For two-and-a-half quarters, it was looking like all anyone would talk about concerning Super Bowl LI (51) was Lady Gaga’s halftime performance.

New England quarterback Tom Brady, and his Patriots teammates, had other ideas.

Brady engineered one of the greatest comebacks in all of sports history, let along the National Football League’s biggest stage, leading the Patriots out of a 25-point deficit and a victory over the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl’s first-ever overtime finish.

The Patriots prevailed 34-28 at Houston’s NRG Stadium on James White’s 2-yard touchdown run in overtime. To get to there, New England scored 19 points in the fourth quarter – along with two 2-point conversions – to tie the game.

Brady, the first quarterback to claim five Super Bowl championship rings, shredded a gradually tiring Falcons defense to the tune of 466 passing yards on 43 of 62 attempts the most ever in a Super Bowl.

Brady was also selected to his fourth Super Bowl most valuable player award, also a record.

Atlanta built a 21-0 lead in the second quarter when Brady threw his first-ever postseason pick-6 to Robert Alford, who returned the interception 82 yards. Earlier NFL MVP Matt Ryan tossed a 19-yard TD pass to tight end Austin Hooper.

In the decisive fourth quarter, Brady threw a scoring pass to Danny Amendola (6 yards) and White’s 1-yard TD run came with 57 seconds remaining in regulation. White ran for the Pats’ first 2-point conversion, and Brady threw to Amendola for the second one.

A key play in the game-tying drive was a first-down catch by Julian Edelman, made with three Falcon defenders draped over him.

New England (17-2) won the coin toss to start overtime and ended the game with the first possession. Brady completed six passes in the drive before a pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Atlanta 2-yard line. From there, White ran off right tackle and barely crossed the plane of the goal line.

That touchdown plunge competed White’s night with 139 total yards and three TDs.

Two years ago, the Patriots erased a 10-point deficit to defeat the Seattle Seahawks in SB 49.

Brady missed the first four games of the 2016 season, serving a suspension imposed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell for the “Deflategate” incident. With “Deflategate” safely tucked away in the past, New England won its 25th postseason game – all in the Super Bowl era.

New England was making its ninth Super Bowl appearance. The franchise’s first postseason game was its loss to San Diego in the 1963 American Football League championship.

It was the fifth Super Bowl title for Brady and Patriots Coach Bill Belichick, who became the first head coach to win five Super Bowl rings, passing the four earned by Chuck Noll of Pittsburgh.

Brady also tied Charles Haley for most Super Bowl victories by a player – five.

For the Falcons (13-6), it was the second Super Bowl loss in two attempts in their 51-year history. Atlanta’s first SB loss came in the 1998 season, when Denver defeated the Falcons 34-19 in Super Bowl XXXIII.

HOUSTON, TX — Oakland Raiders defensive end/linebacker Khalil Mack took home the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award at the NFL Honor ceremony on Saturday night.

Mack would win his first career DPOY award over notable stars such as Giants safety Landon Collins, Denver pass rusher Von Miller, Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and Seahawks thumping linebacker Bobby Wagner.

After a slow start to the 2016 season with just one sack in his first five games, Mack would go on a frenzy from mid-October through mid-December in which the former Buffalo standout would collect 10 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and a pick-six while helping the Silver & Black earn their first playoff berth since 2002.

Mack finished the season with 73 tackles, 11 sacks, five forced fumbles, and one interception.

Mack leads the NFL with 11 fourth-quarter sacks since 2015. That season, Mack finished with 15 sacks and became the first player ever in NFL history to be named to the Associated Press All-Pro Team at two different positions.

The straw that stirs the drink for Oakland’s defense was responsible for 44 percent of the Raiders’ sacks, while his 26 quarterback hits were second only to Donald’s 31 this season, per NFL Research.

Super Bowl LI Podcast with David Zizmor: One for the pinkie finger Brady looks for his fifth Super Bowl ring

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady could be the first quarterback to win five Super Bowl rings with one team and the first QB to win five with one team. This is obviously a big deal for the history books. You could debate all you want who the greatest quarterback is. The era has been given to size and the style of play and everything. Brady who had grown up in the Bay Area will be the first to tell you he doesn’t have anything on former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana who has four Super Bowl rings as he’s the quarterback Brady grew up idolizing.

Nonetheless Brady’s a guy whose mentioned in the same breath as Joe Montana at Canton Ohio at the NFL Football Hall of Fame in the future. Brady has four Super Bowls already his legacy is cemented and if he gets a fifth ring he will have accomplished something nobody else has. Again a Super Bowl Ring from one team starting quarterback that’s historical if he can get it done this Sunday in Houston.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: A’s have a lot to do with Raiders in uncertain stadium issues

millenialmoola.com photo: Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis and Las Vegas Sands chairman  Sheldon Adelson in better times until the deal for a new Las Vegas football stadium collapsed this week

The Oakland A’s play a role in the Oakland Raiders stadium issue and after Las Vegas Casino Mogul Sheldon Aldeson removed himself from the plan to build a $1.9 billion domed stadium for the Raiders the Raiders look like they have no where to go but to stay in Oakland. Not to mention the other investor Goldman Sachs withdrew their share of building the stadium money in Las Vegas.

That brings the issue of the Raiders stadium location back in Oakland. Although nothing is official in Oakland yet for the Raiders staying the Stadium money for the Raiders moving to Vegas is about to fall like a house of cards. The Ronnie Lott group you can expect them to step up again with a plan to build a stadium in Oakland and the Coliseum location might be the most likely location.

Amaury talks A’s and Raiders stadium issues plus Oakland A’s pitcher Sonny Gray being named to the WBC US team and the St Louis Cardinals fined $2 million and will have to give up two draft picks to the Houston Astros when then Cardinals executive Christopher Correa hacked into the Astros database. Correa was charged for a cybercrime, is banned for life from MLB, plead guilty to five counts of unauthorized access into a protected computer and is in prison since last summer serving 46 months and was ordered to pay $279,039.

San Francisco 49ers Report: 49ers Front Office Starting to Take Shape

KPIX CBS 5 San Francisco still: San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA–The San Francisco 49ers hunt for a new general manager is over. On Sunday, it was reported that they will hire John Lynch. The team confirmed the report on Monday, naming him as the new general manger.

Lynch has never held a front office position in the NFL but does has ties to the Bay Area, playing his college football at Stanford University. The 49ers and CEO, Jed York, don’t view his inexperience as a bad thing, however, as they are willing to take a chance.

Prior to the hiring, Lynch spent his time as a TV Analyst for the NFL on Fox. While at Fox, it was reported that he was one of the most prepared guys in the meeting, something that York later said was beneficial to his hiring.

The search for a new general manager was a long one for the Santa Clara, California-based team as their first round of interviews included nine candidates, none of which were Lynch. After the second round of interviews, candidates, from the Green Bay Packers organization backed out of discussions, due to pay raises. After all this wasted time, the 49ers had to go back to the drawing board and wanted to bring in expected head coach, Kyle Shanahan into the discussion.

Shanahan, who has yet to be named the head coach is still in his role as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in this weekend’s Super Bowl.

Without Shanahan being named coach, it seems like he had a lot to do with the hiring of Lynch. Adam Schefter reported that Lynch reached out to Shanahan to claim interest in the position. Apparently, Shanahan thought there was enough of a fit to suggest the hiring of Lynch.

The 49ers wanted to ensure that the new GM and coach got along after York said in a press conference that there was a lack of communication between Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly multiple times last season.

Since the hire, Lynch has made his first move as the general manager by bringing on Adam Peters as the Vice President of Player Personnel. The former Denver Broncos college scouting director is a great hire for a team that has been abysmal at previous drafts.

NFL Pro Bowl in Orlando: AFC wins Pro Bowl in return to old format

Returning to the traditional conference battle, the AFC defeated the NFC 20-13 in the annual NFL Pro Bowl Sunday in Orlando, Fla.

Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton completed 10 of 12 passes for 100 yards and engineered two scoring drives. Dalton tossed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce of Kansas City late in the second quarter and led the drive that culminated in Justin Tucker of Baltimore’s 38-yard field goal.

Tucker’s kick gave the AFC a 17-7 lead midway through the third period.

The game marks a return to the old format that started with the 1970 merger and ran through the 2012 season. A concept of having a player draft was used the last three seasons.

The NFC had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the closing moments, but a pass from Kirk Cousins to Seattle’s Jimmy Graham slipped through the tight end’s hands and was intercepted by Buffalo linebacker Lorenzo Alexander at the AFC 2-yard line.

Alexander then lateraled the ball to Aqib Talib of Denver on the interception return that ended at the NFC 12 to end the scoring threat.

Drew Brees of New Orleans completed 10 of 19 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown pass to Doug Baldwin for the NFC. Alex Smith of Kansas City, the AFC starter, was 6 of 8 passing for 74 yards and a TD pass to Delanie Walker of Tennessee.

An announced crowd of 60,834 came to Camping World Stadium (the refurbished Citrus Bowl) to watch the first Pro Bowl played in Orlando.
