Warriors play well on both ends of court beat Celtics 123-107

The Golden State Warriors (14-13) still smarting from losing to the Jazz on Wednesday, had to face the Boston Celtics Saturday night at the Chase Center. The Celtics entered the game with the best record in the Eastern Conference, 21-6. Boston also had the best road record in the NBA, 10-3.

The Warriors beat the Celtics three straight times in the NBA Finals last June to win their seventh NBA crown. The Celtics came to town with a single obsession. Beat the Warriors. Boston led the NBA in scoring and has one of the best on defense.

Two questions had to be answered Saturday evening. Could the Warriors take down the Celtics? Could Boston show the Warriors they are aiming to play the Warriors again in the finals?

The Warriors answered one of the questions. Even though they are in 11th place in the Western Conference, the Warriors can beat any team when they play well on both ends of the court. The Warriors showed their champion DNA as they beat the Celtics 123-107.

The Warriors’ Splash Brothers, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry scored 66 points in the game. The Warriors are 14-0 when Curry and Thompson each scored more than 30 points Saturday night. The Warriors took the lead for good early in the first quarter. Jordan Poole knocked down a three to put the Warriors ahead 15-13.

Boston never regained the lead. The Warriors won the first quarter 33-25. Curry, Thompson, and Poole continued to make buckets to pace the Warriors to a five-point halftime advantage,68-63.

The Warriors were ahead 65-54 when Boston went on a 7-0 run. Curry connected on a three to right the ship. Thompson finished the half with 24 points. Curry had 17, and Poole 13. Jonathan Kuminga was the only bench player to score in the first half. He added four points.

The Warriors, who usually own the third quarter, didn’t blow the Celtics out of the arena Saturday night. They did play well as they won the quarter 27-20 to finish the period leading Boston 95-83. Curry scored the first five points for the Warriors in the quarter.

Boston kept fighting back, but the Warriors defense held the Celtics to 20 points. In the fourth quarter leading 97-85, Kuminga made three straight buckets to propel The Warriors to a 15-point lead 103-86. Boston responded with an 11-2 run to close the gap to eight, 105-97. Jaylen Brown was keeping Boston in the game.

The Warriors had put the clamps on Boston’s other superstar, Jayson Tatum. The Warriors defense held Boston to 24 points in the final stanza to win 123-107.

Game Notes and Stats: The Warriors win improved their record to 14-13. Golden State is now 12-2 at the Chase Center this year, and the Warriors are 11-6 in their last 17 games. Boston’s record falls to 21-7

Thompson’s line was 34 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Thonpson was 14-for-26 from the floor. He made four threes. Curry’s line was 32 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. Curry shot 12-for-21 from the floor, and he made six threes. Poole had 20, Draymond Green 11, and Kuminga finished with 14. 

The Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins missed his third straight game with a groin strain.

The Warriors shot 51% from the floor. They made 13 threes as a team. They held Boston to 43% from the floor. The Celtics leading the league in making three-point shots made 12. Brown led Boston with 31 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Brown made three threes. Tatum finished the night with 18 points and seven rebounds. He made two three in nine attempts. Coming off the bench, Malcolm Brogdon had 16, and Blake Griffin and Marcus Smart had 13. 

The Warriors start a six-game road trip Tuesday night when they face the Milwaukee Bucks. They then play the Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets before returning home. So far, the Warriors are 2-11 on the road this season. They must figure out how to win on the road. Warrior head coach Steve Kerr has his work cut out for him.

The game in Milwaukee starts at 4:30 pm.

Kings Handle Cleveland 106-95; Barnes lead Sac with 20 pts

Kings Handle Cleveland 106-95

Friday night the Sacramento Kings (14-10) took on the Cleveland Cavaliers (16-10) at Rocket Mortgage Field House. The Kings were without De’Aaron Fox who has been dealing with right foot soreness for awhile now. He has not been right for a few games especially offensively. He will really benefit from some time off which will serve not only himself but the team better down the road.

Donovan Mitchell (out with a hamstring injury ) or Kevin Love for Cleveland so both team’s season leaders Mitchell and Fox missed Friday’s game. Mitchell had a monster game Tuesday night shooting for 43 points so he will be missed by Cleveland. The Kings moved fast on offense and created some key shots in their 106-95 win over the Cavaliers.

The Kings started Davion Mitchell, Kevin Huerter, Harrison Barnes, Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis. Defensive rebounding for Sacramento will play a huge role in this game.

The Kings came out fast in the first quarter taking a 24-11 lead with 3:00 left on the clock. The Kings Barnes and Murray were perfect from downtown. Murray hit four three’s and Barnes had 2 of 2. Sacramento also had 12 rebounds to Cleveland’s seven rebounds. The Kings led after the opening quarter 31-20. Sacramento had done exactly what they needed to do to start this game.

The Kings were able to hold a double digit lead minutes into the second quarter. That lead began to slip away with seven minutes left in the half, although, they held onto a 37-30 lead. The Kings started missing shots and turnovers played a role in the Cavalier surge. The Kings had scored 31 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second. The 15 point lead the Kings had held evaporated and at the half the two teams were tied at 49.

The third quarter remained close and at the finish, the Cavaliers held an 80-79 lead. The Kings continued to fight hard and going into the fourth quarter it became apparent that Sacramento had the ability to win this game. They had to clean up the turnovers and avoid forcing shots and continue to challenge Cleveland on every possession.

With under two minutes left in the game the Kings had taken back the lead 101-95. They fought hard blocking shots, drawing fouls and sinking three’s. Sacramento took a 103-95 lead with 35.4 ticks left on the game clock.

The Kings had a great offensive effort with Barnes the high score shooting for 20 points. Huerter had 19 and Murray and Sabonis each had 18 points. Sabonis also had an amazing 19 rebounds.

Caris Levert was the high for the Cavaliers with 22 points.

The Kings continue on this road trip traveling to New York to take on the Knicks Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

On the Kings podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 The Bucks outscored the Kings in both quarters in the first half. Milwaukee led after the opening quarter 34-29. They would extend their lead at the half leading 68-61.

#2 This game was tied at 25 with 4:12 left in the opening quarter but the Bucks began to turn things around for the 34-29 lead after one.

#3 An 8-0 run for Sacramento cut the Buck lead dramatically trailing 80-76 with under seven left in the third. After three quarters the Kings trailed by a mere three points 97-94. Fox had a great third quarter and had 13 points along with Huerter and Murray who each had 13 points for the game.

#4 The Kings got another double double from Sabonis. He finished with 23 points. Every starter had double digits with Barnes shooting for 20 points Monk finished with 16 points. 

#5 The Kings continue on this very tough road trip taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers Friday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

The Golden State Warriors missed three starters Wednesday night when they faced the Utah Jazz at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. Stephen Curry was out with an ankle injury. Draymond Green could not play with a hip problem, and Andrew Wiggins has a groin injury.

The Jazz thought they could coast to an easy win. The revamped Warrior lineup gave the Jazz fits. Jordan Poole, Klay Thompson, Jonathan Kuminga, and Donte DiVincenzo all played well and their effort almost, but not quite, got them a win. The Jazz found a way to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as they found a way and were able to send their fans home happy with a thrilling 124-123 victory. 

The Warriors won the first half 69-66. Jordan Poole led the team with 21 points in the first 24 minutes. Klay Thompson had 11, and Kuminga added nine. The Warriors and Jazz played a very entertaining first half. Neither team could pull away.

The Warriors led most of the way, but Utah came right back. Jordan Clarkson, Malik Beasley, and Collin Sexton led the way for Utah. The teams raced up and down the court. The Warriors head coach had Ty Jerome and JaMychal Green in the starting lineup.

Green scored seven points in the first quarter to help the Warriors finish the period leading 35-30. The Jazz outscored the Warriors 36-34 in the second period. The Warriors second unit did not fold as the Jazz attacked the basket. Kuminga, Thompson, Anthony Lamb, and Poole played well. At the end of the half, the Warriors led by three, 69-66.

The third quarter belonged to the Jazz. Utah focused on shutting down Poole. The Jazz outscored the Warriors by 12, 34-22. The Jazz made seven threes to put them in the driver’s seat. The Warriors missed several layups. Golden State could not get the threes to fall. Utah finished the third quarter leading 100-91. 

The Jazz increased the lead to ten, 110-100, early in the fourth quarter. The Warriors’ Poole hit a three and a two-pointer to close the gap to 111-109. Moody connected on a three to make it a one-point game 113-112. The momentum had shifted to the Warriors. Utah scored the next four points, but Moody sunk another three to creep within two, 117-115.

Poole made a bucket to tie the game. Kuminga’s bucket gave the Warriors the lead 119-117 with 36 seconds left. Jordan Clarkson was driving to the basket to tie the score. Kuminga blocked his shot and grabbed the rebound. Clarkson whacked Jonathan in the face.

Tempers flared. Both players were given a technical foul. Referee Mark Davis hit Clarkson with a flagrant two-foul. Clarkson was ejected from the game. Kuminga was awarded two free three, and the Warriors retained possession. Kuminga made one free three. Poole was fouled, and he missed one.

The Warriors led 123-119 with 13.3 seconds left to play. The Jazz scored a bucket to make it 123-122 with 6.7 seconds left. All the Warriors had to do was get the ball inbounded and run out the clock. The Jazz probably would foul and hope to get the last shot. What could go wrong?

The Warriors had trouble getting the ball into play. They called a timeout to go over what to do. The plan was to get the ball into Poole’s hands. The Warriors did get the ball to him, but Utah was all over him and stole the ball. The Jazz scored the winning layup as time expired. All the Warriors could do was wonder what went wrong. They will have a tough flight home. The Jazz won the game 124-123.

Game Notes and stats: With the loss, the Warriors are 13-13. The Jazz improved to 15-12

There were many positives in the game. Kuminga played his best game of the year. Kuminga had a season-high 24 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Kuminga played very well on defense, too. Poole led the club with 36 points, four boards, and eight assists. Thompson tallied 22 points and had four threes. DiVincenzo had seven points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Those numbers are very similar to what Draymond Green would do. 

The Warriors shot 46% from the floor. They made 14 threes. They almost won in an arena that has been a house of horrors for them over the years. 

The Jazz had seven players in double figures. Jodan Clarkson led the Jazz with 22. Simone Fontecchio had 18, Malik Beasley 18, Collin Sexton 17, Kelly Olynyk 15, Mickeil Alexander-Walker 11, and Walker Kessler had ten points and 12 rebounds. Kessler is 7’1, and Kelly Olynyk is 6’11. 

The Warriors host the Boston Celtics at the Chase Center Saturday night. Last year, the Warriors beat the Celtics in the Finals to become NBA Champions. The Celtics will be hoping to gain revenge by beating the Warriors on their homecourt Saturday night.

Kings Winning Streak Comes To An End Bucks Beat Sacramento 126-113

Wednesday night the Sacramento Kings (13-10) faced the Milwaukee Bucks (18-6) at Fiserv Forum. This was a huge challenge for Sacramento and they needed team leader De’Aaron Fox to be on his A game. The Kings, this season have shown some great defense.

They have risen from 18th in defense climbing steadily and in their past few games have been an amazing fourth in defense. The Kings just fell short getting defeated by the Bucks 126-113.

The Bucks outscored the Kings in both quarters in the first half. Milwaukee led after the opening quarter 34-29. They would extend their lead at the half leading 68-61. The Kings had done a great job in staying competitive in this game. They did take an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. This game was tied at 25 with 4:12 left in the opening quarter but the Bucks began to turn things around for the 34-29 lead after one.

The second quarter was very competitive for the Kings. The Bucks won the quarter by two points but Sacramento hung close through the entire quarter. Fox only had six points in the half and it was Harrison Barnes with 13 and Domantas Sabonis with 12 that kept the team afloat. The high score for the Kings was bench player Malik Monk with 14 points.

In the third quarter the Bucks took their largest lead of the game 78-66. Only four minutes into the quarter Milwaukee threatened to break the game wide open. Sacramento had a lot of work to do and they needed Fox who was having a rough shooting night hitting only two of eight.

An 8-0 run for Sacramento cut the Buck lead dramatically trailing 80-76 with under seven left in the third. After three quarters the Kings trailed by a mere three points 97-94. Fox had a great third quarter and had 13 points along with Huerter and Murray who each had 13 points for the game.

With five minutes left in the game the Bucks had a 12 point lead 117-105 and Milwaukee clearly had control of these final minutes. The Kings three game winning streak was in jeopardy. The final was 126-113. The Kings hung in this game for three quarters but could not finish this game strong the way they came into the game.

The Kings got another double double from Sabonis. He finished with 23 points. Every starter had double digits with Barnes shooting for 20 points Monk finished with 16 points. Sacramento could not handle the combination of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday. They had a combined 66 points for the game.

The Kings continue on this very tough road trip taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers Friday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

Warriors Lose Second Home Game To Pacers 112-104

Warriors Lose Second Home Game To Pacers 112-104

Monday night the Golden State Warriors (13-12) took on the Indiana Pacers (13-11) looking to extend their winning streak at Chase Center. With some strong offense and holding the Pacers back on great defense the Warriors defeated the Pacers 112-104.

The Warriors had a cool start in the opening quarter and trailed after the first 12 minutes 34-21. The Warriors won the second quarter 29-25 but continued to trail at the half 59-50 playing from behind for most of the first two quarters.

After three quarters the Pacers continued to lead 89-81. Golden State did get to within five points but the lead had eluded them so far. Stephen Curry who had a very quiet first half hit his first two three’s in the quarter. The team would need Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole in the fourth quarter to pull this game out. The Warriors were only shooting at 39%. Golden State shot 31 points in the quarter to the Pacers 30.

Indiana called a quick time-out in the fourth quarter after one minute of play. The Warriors had pulled to within four points 89-85 looking to take the lead. The Pacers have been a fourth quarter team this season, the best in the league, but with 9:13 left in the game the Warriors took their second lead of the game 93-92.

The Pacers had done a great job guarding Curry all night and took a 109-102 lead with under three minutes left in the game. The Warriors just didn’t have the legs to finish the game and the Warriors lost their second home game of the season.

The Pacers played a great game. They came out on fire shooting 55% and never let down. The high score for Indiana was Andrew Nembhard the rookie out of Gonzaga. He finished with a career high 31 points.

The Warriors couldn’t get anything going in the game trailing for most of it. The three’s were not falling going 11 of 44. Thompson had 28 points in this game and Poole finished with 23. It was just an off night for the Warriors rarely shooting as poorly as they did tonight. Ball movement was stagnant at times for Golden State and they will need to bounce back quickly for their next game Wednesday.

The Warriors will head out on the road to take on the Utah Jazz Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

On the Warriors podcast with Barbara:

#1 On Saturday night the Golden State Warriors Andrew Wiggins scored 36 points and shot eight 3’s to tie his career high.

#2 Both Houston Rockets and Warriors were coming off back to back nights. The Warriors just simply had an unstoppable offense with their 120-111 win.

#3 Guard Stephen Curry hit eight 3’s as well and scored 30 points and was a big contributor to the Warriors offense on Saturday.

#4 In the third quarter Wiggins hit consecutive threes and went 14-19 as the Warriors picked up their tenth straight win on their home floor.

#5 The Warriors host the Indiana Pacers on Monday night the Pacers have won three of their last five games how do you see this match up Monday?

Bull Market: Kings hit another two-decade milestone in 110-101 home win over Chicago

SACRAMENTO–Even if the games run ragged, the Kings are winning them.

Clearly times have changed… anyone remember December 2004 with Peja, C Webb, and Mike Bibby at Arco?

That was the last time the Kings had this encouraging a start to a season after 22 games. How long ago was that? Well, for one, Vlade Divac was already gone in 2004, and since he’s materialized (as Kings GM) and disappeared a second time. Doug Christie was present in 2004 but subsequently gone, then re-emerged as a member of the Kings TV broadcast team, and now a member of Mike Brown’s coaching staff.

That’s a lot of comings and goings, but the lengthiest playoff drought in North American sports can be like that.

Brown’s arrival, a healthy roster, and (slightly) better defense are keys to the home team’s emergence, but a genuine belief might be even bigger.

“They’re connected,” Brown said after Sunday’s 110-101 win over the road-weary Kings. “They’re trying to play for each other, and when you get that with a talented group and two All-Stars in Fox and Domas, and a lot of guys who can step up, including Sixth Man of the Year (hopeful) Malik Monk, you get some nice wins.”

At 13-9, the Kings have won three straight and 11 of 16, and those anxious moments that saw fans get those negative thoughts (again) during the recent three-game skid have subsided. Seeing the team win in person at Golden 1 certainly does more than seeing them struggle on the road while watching them on television. That’s for sure.

The Kings weren’t great on Sunday 24 hours after they wasted the Clippers in Los Angeles. They missed shots–30 of 43 from distance–and after building an 18-point, second quarter lead saw it evaporate in the third.

In part, the visitors, led by Zach LaVine’s 41 points, weren’t keen on returning to Chicago with a losing record on their road swing. But a sixth game in 12 days wasn’t going to put them in position to be at their best, especially when they’ve been far from that in dropping 10 of 14.

You know that team won’t go away,” Fox said. “They have some guys that can really go get it. They did that tonight, and we were just trying to throw different looks at them, but I think in the fourth quarter, we were able to get stops when we needed them.”

Seven Kings scored in double figures, but no one had more than Monk’s 20 off the bench. The balanced scoring fit the uneven performance in that if you don’t have a couple of standouts to help you cruise, it’s okay to find your way with a determined committee.

That and the first triple-double from Sabonis, who had 11 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists, the first time the Kings’ center has achieved that milestone since he was traded to Sacramento. And he did it when some other big body on another team might have rested in a back-to-back scenario.

“I don’t really believe in resting,” Sabonis said before the game. “What we’re paid for as professional athletes (is to) perform. But, yeah, the West is packed. If other teams want to rest players, it’s to our advantage to go out there and take that win.”

The Kings have two days off before they take on the Bucks in Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Golden State Wins Number Ten At Home Beating Rockets 120-101

Saturday night the Golden State Warriors (13-11) took on the Houston Rockets (6-17) at Chase Center. The Rockets are struggling and Golden State is close to unbeatable at home. The Warriors still have their problems on the road and lost to the Dallas Mavericks Tuesday night. The Warriors were able to hold on Saturday with a 120-101 win against the Rockets at Chase Center.

Golden State had a miserable first quarter on Tuesday night against the Dallas Mavericks but only lost 116-113. A good start to open that game would have most certainly have won the game for them. That loss was on the road. Most recently the Warriors beat the Chicago Bulls 119-111on Friday, a home game for Golden State.

Saturday game recap: The first quarter of this game set the pace for the remainder of the game in favor of the Warriors. They won the opening quarter decisively 39-23. The Rockets made quite a run in the second quarter, a 18-3 run. The Warriors had four turnovers in 2 1/2 minutes and the tide began to change in favor of the Rockets.

Houston had erased the 25 point lead that Golden State once had in the half. With two minutes left before halftime the score was 61-50. The Warriors have the ability to change the course of the game when things start to go south. This game was no exception. The Rockets got to within ten points but the Warriors had a solid end to the half and extended their lead 68-52.

The third quarter was a back and forth affair. Andrew Wiggins had a career high in the quarter. With two minutes left, Wiggins had shot 34 points and was eight of ten from downtown. Every time the Rockets made a run the Warriors shut them down. Golden State led after three quarters 94-80.

Going into the fourth quarter the Warriors were looking for ten straight wins at home. Stephen Curry tweaked his ankle in the third quarter and sat to start the quarter. With under seven minutes left in the game a nervous tone blanketed Chase Center. Houston had pulled to within four points.

This game got a bit dicey in the final minutes of the game but Golden State managed to come out on top. Every time the Rockets challenged the Warriors answered with a barrage of three’s. The final was 120-101.

Curry finished with 30 points and Jordan Poole had 21. The star of this game was Andrew Wiggins who scored a career high 36 points and was 8 of 10 from beyond the arc. Kevon Looney had a great defensive effort with 12 rebounds.

The high for the Rockets was Kevin Porter Jr. with 20 points. Houston threatened at times but couldn’t overcome the depth of the Warriors roster.

Golden State will take on the Indiana Pacers Monday night at Chase Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
