It was close Raiders pull it off against Browns 16-14 in Cleveland; Carlson boots game winner

The Las Vegas Raiders (7-7) just squeaked by the Cleveland Browns (7-7) 16-14 at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Raiders in a must win situation against just got by in the fourth quarter thanks to kicker Daniel Carlson who kicked a 48 yard field goal.

The win helped the Raiders snap a two game losing streak and kept Las Vegas’ playoffs hope alive. The Raiders earlier in the game fell a point behind 14-13 when Browns third string quarterback Nick Mullens threw for a six yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Harrison Bryant with just under four minutes left at 3:45 in the game.

Mullens got the call in his first appearance all season after starter Baker Mayfield and second stringer Case Keenum both tested positive for Covid 19 along with eight other teammates. The lack of help helped the Raiders just get by the Browns in the latter stages of the game.

This game was originally scheduled for Saturday but got the Monday afternoon 3 PM PST or 6PM EST start after the Browns were in Covid protocols. With just 2:47 left in the game Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw a pass intended for wide receiver Zay Jones that was intercepted by Browns cornerback Greedy Williams which the Browns and their fans figured they Browns would wind the clock down and hand the Raiders another L.

It was not to be for the Browns, Browns running back Nick Chubb couldn’t get much daylight against the Raiders defense. Chubb took three carries against the Raiders defense only to be held to seven yards.

With 1:50 left in the game the Raiders got another chance and the ball back and Carr under center wanted Las Vegas to get into good field position to come back and score. After Browns kicker Dustin Colquitt punted the Raiders got the ball on their own 30 and Carr went to work.

Carr threw three yard pass to Foster Moreau, then Jones for 12 yards, Raider running back Josh Jacobs carried for nine yards, Moreau caught a 12 yard pass and got the ball to the 30 yard line in the Browns zone.

The Thanksgiving Day hero Carlson would get another chance to boot another game winner. Carlson hit a game winning field goal to hand the Raiders a 36-33 win on Thanksgiving day. Fast forward to Monday and Carlson lined it up and hit the ball for a 48 yarder to get the Raiders a two point win. Carlson has now booted 31 successful field goals out of 34 attempts.

The next game for the Raiders, they will host the Denver Broncos Sun Dec 26th at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas at 1:25 pm PST. The Broncos lost a tough one to the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday 15-10. Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was relieved by back up Drew Lock after receiving a concussion. Bridgewater was released from the hospital on Monday.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Raiders try to put lopsided Chiefs game behind them, face a Brown team with 19 players and coaches on covid list Sunday

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow (13) is hit from behind by Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Mike Hughes (21) who forces a fumble in the first half of Sun Dec 12, 2021 game in Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. The Raiders face the Cleveland Browns this Sun Dec 19, 2021 at EnergyFirst Stadium in Cleveland (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Last Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City was a record setter for the Chiefs (9-4) their biggest spread in a 39 point victory over the Las Vegas Raiders (6-7) 48-9. There certainly wasn’t a mercy rule in this contest.

#2 You would never know with a score like that that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would throw well under 300 yards his line, 20-24, 258 yards, and two touchdowns it just seemed like the running backs were on autopilot all game long.

#3 Tony, Mahomes said after the game, “You don’t want people coming into your stadium and trying to disrespect things you’ve built,” Mahomes said. “So for us, there was a little more motivation to go against a really good football team that we have a rivalry against.”

#4 For the Raiders quarterback Derek Carr 33-45, 263 yards, one touchdown and an interception. For Carr’s offense last Sunday a field goal in the second quarter by Dan Carlson and a touchdown catch for Hunter Renfrow in the third quarter.

#5 Up next for the Raiders the Cleveland Browns (7-6) at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. The Browns have been playing .500 going 5-5 in their last ten games. The Browns won their last game Sunday just getting by the Baltimore Ravens (8-5) at FirstEnergy. The Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns.

#6 Tony, the game was a concern for a moment as 14 players and coaches which included quarterback Baker Mayfield were put on the Covid 19 protocols lists for this Saturday. The Browns will be shorthanded but they will be able to field a team against the Raiders this Saturday.

Las Vegas to Host their First Superbowl

Even if the Oakland A’s do not move to Las Vegas, Sin City is well-positioned and on track to become besides a gambling mecca a sports mecca as well. The NFL granted the city their first ever Superbowl on February 13, 2024. Considered America’s number one sporting event, there is no doubt for Las Vegas, this is huge. Aside from the Raiders, Las Vegas is also home to the NHL Vegas Golden Knights.

Pending approval by the NFL owners this Wednesday, Las Vegas will host the 2024 Superbowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, a $2 billion facility with 65,000 seat capacity. But it doesn’t stop there; Las Vegas will also host the Pro Bowl on February 6th and the NFL Draft, April 28-30.

In history, Las Vegas is relatively a new city, founded in 1905 by William C. Clark, owner of three railroads, but it was really a charismatic gangster born in Brooklyn, New York by the name of Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel who had the vision of a place for everybody to gamble where they could stay, eat, drink, gamble, vacation and be entertained.

On December 26, 1946 Siegel opened The Flamingo Hotel, first of its kind in Las Vegas and a new concept began. Las Vegas today is a world destination. Las Vegas had the most hotel rooms among all cities in the US, as of January 2016 with 167,730 rooms, much more today since many other facilities have opened since then.

Raiders come out of the gate with no power get crushed by Chiefs 48-9

The Raiders defense were running all day and were chasing the Kansas City Chiefs into the end zone like running back Derrick Gore (40) who ran this carry for a 51-yard touchdown at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Sun Dec 12, 2021 (AP News photo)

The Las Vegas Raiders (6-7) came out very flat making two huge costly turnovers to initially fall behind 21 nothing in the first quarter. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr came out energetically but was not on fire today. The Raiders fell deeper and deeper as the quarters minutes passed. The Kansas City Chiefs (9-4) spared no one in silver and black notching up their ninth victory of the season 48-9.

It was a game that the Raiders wish they could take back obviously but it seemed like it was coming to a head over the last few weeks. For Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes he had daylight he also had all day to throw. Mahomes line for Sunday 20-24 for 258 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Many of the players have been disgruntled over the lack of direction by Raiders interim head coach Rich Basacchia and with the Chiefs bowling over Las Vegas on Sunday that very well might be the one that breaks the camel’s back for Bassacia’s future. The loss marks the Raiders fourth in their last five games.

Things were so bad from the start when the Raiders running back Josh Jacobs fumbled the ball on the first play of the game and the ball was recovered and returned for a touchdown. It didn’t take long for Carr to get into trouble either he threw an interception in the next offensive series and the Chiefs turned lemons into lemonade again and scored.

The Raiders Foster Moreau fumbled the ball and again the Chiefs would recover and turn that miscue into a touchdown. Three turnovers in the first and second quarters by the Raiders were executed by the Chiefs for scores.

When the Raiders did get to spend a little time on offense Carr threw for 263 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Raiders only score were a field goal in the second quarter by kicker Daniel Carlson and a third quarter touchdown catch by wide receiver Hunter Renfrow. Renfrow was Carr’s favorite target with 13 receptions and 117 yards.

Bassacia was none too please after the game which was a head scratcher on what went wrong on both sides of the ball, “I thought we had a really good week of practice. I didn’t see this coming. I didn’t see the turnovers from good players. When that happens it’s like, ‘Geez, what’s going to happen next?’” said Bassacia.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Taking a look at how Raiders will attack Mahomes and Chiefs on Sunday

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 The Washington Football Team (6-6) just had enough in the tank to get by the Las Vegas Raiders (6-6) last Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas 17-15. The Raiders just couldn’t get generate much offense with no scoring in the first quarter, a field goal in the second and third quarters and scoring nine in the fourth quarter.

#2 Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw 28-38 for 249 yards no touchdowns and no interceptions did you see Washington all over Carr he sacked, couldn’t convert the three and out, and was not exactly pleased about missing wide receiver DeSean Jackson on a pass as he was wide open.

#3 How disappointing of a loss this had to be last Sunday as the Raiders were coming off a win against the Dallas Cowboys 36-33 on Thu Nov 25 only to really struggle against Washington and lost by two points.

#4 How bad was the play calling of the two point conversion attempt by Derek Carr in the fourth quarter after scoring six but couldn’t convert and the Raiders went onto lose by two points.

#5 The Kansas City Chiefs (8-4) are next they were full control over the Denver Broncos last Sun Dec 5 at Arrowhead Stadium 22-9 and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw 15-29 for 184 yards and one interception. How do you see the Raiders and Chiefs matching up Sunday.

On the Raiders podcast with Tony R:

#1 Tony, just wanted to ask you about the Las Vegas Raiders (6-6) running back Kenyan Drake and linebacker Nick Kwaitowski who are on the reserve/injured list how will they be missed this coming Sunday in Kansas City?

#2 Returning from the reserve/injured list are safety Tyree Gillespie and defensive tackle Darius Philon do you see them getting in Sunday’s game?

#3 How important was it for Washington Football Team (6-6) defensive coordinator and former Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio to put a stop to the Raiders offense and Derek Carr last Sunday?

#4 There’s been talk that Raiders head coach Rich Bisaccia needs to push Carr and the offense a little harder after the Raiders lost in a relatively low scoring game last Sunday 17-15.

#5 The Raiders begin the first of two weeks on the road starting with the Kansas City Chiefs (8-4) the Raiders well know they can never live down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense. The Chiefs have won five in a row including the last time the Raiders met the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football on Nov 14th 41-14.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) scrambles for some day light against Washington Football Team outside linebacker Cole Holcomb (55) at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Dec 5, 2021 (AP News photo)

The Washington Football Team (6-6) won their fifth straight game defeating the Las Vegas Raiders (6-6) at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday 17-15. This was the Raiders fourth loss in five games and they fall victim to Washington kicker Brian Johnson who booted a 48 yard field goal for the go ahead and eventual game winner.

The kick comes on Johnson’s fifth day after joining Washington, he’s not even familiar with his own teammates like defensive lineman Jonathan Allen who said he didn’t even know Johnson’s name yet. Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke got Johnson into good field position for the 48 yarder to put Washington ahead. Washington had fell behind the Raiders by eight points.

Johnson said once he walked into the Washington locker room this week he said the vibe was positive and was pumped up to play for his newest club, “The vibe and everything, for not being around it, I felt it once I walked in,” said Johnson “It’s an awesome locker room to be in. They’re probably still learning my name, but it’s awesome to be here.”

The Raiders just couldn’t capitalize on their Thanksgiving Day victory in Dallas when they beat the Cowboys 36-33. Derek Carr quarterback threw from the Raiders 43 yard line that just fell short at the goal line in attempt to make a comeback and overtake Washington.

The Raiders got field goals in the second and third quarters, Raiders running back Josh Jacobs scored after a 75 yard drive carrying for a one yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Carr elected to go for a two point conversion but his pass to wide receiver Bryan Edwards hit him in the back.

Carr said that you can’t win football games on field goals after the game, “Field goals aren’t going to win you games. You have to get touchdowns, especially with the teams we have coming up. We will need touchdowns to win these games.”

The Raiders host the Kansas City Chiefs who have won five straight games coming into this Sun Dec 12th contest at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Hill suspended one game for helmet flying punch of Simpson

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Trysten Hill in yellow circle throws punch knocking Raider lineman John Simpson’s helmet off in a post game confrontation at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sun Nov 28, 2021 (Larry Brown Sports photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich, after losing three straight games do the Las Vegas Raiders (6-5) look as if they righted the ship somewhat with their close but 36-33 win over the Dallas Cowboys (7-4) last Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington?

#2 Rich, Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Trysten Hill was been suspended for the next Cowboys game for throwing a punch a Raider lineman John Simpson but had his suspension reduced to just one game after appealing to the NFL. Hill sought out Simpson after the game going in the opposite direction of the Cowboys locker room and toward the Raiders tunnel side and confronted Simpson throwing a open hand punch in Simpson’s face mask. The NFL said this was deliberate behavior and the force of the punch knocked Simpson’s helmet off.

#3 It was reported that Hill had trouble coming out of college and he had problems with the Cowboys and no one is really surprised by this and the NFL needed to set a heavy handed deterrent when they originally suspended Hill for one game.

#4 The fight between Hill and Simpson broke protocols it’s an unwritten rule amongst players, coaches and personnel that they were there to shake hands and show good sportsmanship at the conclusion of each game and not to seek each one another out and cause a fracas.

#5 The Raiders host the Washington Football Team (5-6) on Sunday Dec 5th for a home game at Allegiant Stadium. Washington is coming off three straight wins after losing three straight games. In their last game Washington just got by the Seattle Seahawks 17-15. Seeing how Washington has improved lately how do you see this match up Sunday between Washington and Las Vegas.

On the Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Tony, after losing three straight games it had to be a lot of weight off the Las Vegas Raiders (6-5) shoulders to get that Thanksgiving Day win against the Dallas Cowboys (7-4) 36-33.

#2 Tony, how much over the span of the three game losing streak did situations and departures of Henry Ruggs and Damon Arnette play into focusing on games for the team?

#3 On Thanksgiving Day going to Dallas after three straight loses critics didn’t give the Raiders much chances of winning but win they did they hung with them on on both sides of the ball for the whole game right down to kicker Daniel Carlson’s game winning field goal to win that game.

#4 For Raiders quarterback Derek Carr an afternoon of just staying in the pocket and getting rid of the ball and making his throws count going 24-39 for 373 yards, and one touchdown he really help guide that offense last Thursday.

#5 The Washington Football Team (5-6) had previously lost three straight games and then turned things around and have won three in a row they won their last game against the Seattle Seahawks (3-8) close as it may 17-15 does Washington pose a threat coming into Allegiant this Sunday against the Raiders how do you see this upcoming match up?

Las Vegas Raiders game wrap: Raiders snap 3 game skid edge Cowboys in OT 36-33

Las Vegas Raiders back up quarterback Marcus Mariota (8) got into the end zone on a carry in the second half of the game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington against the Dallas Cowboys on Thu Nov 25, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Rich Perez

Las Vegas Raiders beat reporter

It took about a month for the Las Vegas Raiders to get the taste of losing out of their mouths with an overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington 36-33 on Thursday night.

You’d have to go back to Sun Oct 24th when the Raiders defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 33-22 when they last won a game. After that game they had a bye week lost two key players to unforeseen circumstances in Henry Ruggs and Damon Arnette during that week that could have knocked any team off the rails and make them miss an opportunity at post season.

The Raiders would lose three straight games to New York Giants, Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. After that Bengals loss critics really wonder when the Raiders would win another game. The wait wouldn’t be long. The victory against the Cowboys on Thursday night really gave the Silver and Black some light in their playoff hope tunnel as it were and at least looking to start playing close to get within striking distance of their opponents.

The Raiders held the lead for most of the game and to come away with a win like this against the Cowboys on a Thanksgiving Day you’d have to go all the way back to 1968 proceeding that year the Raiders lost the next two Thanksgiving dates with Dallas but got back in the win column in overtime Thursday after Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson booted a 29 yard overtime field goal to get the Raiders over the hump for the three point win.

For the Cowboys the loss marks their third loss in games when they went overtime and this is the sixth overtime game in Thanksgiving Day history. One of the key reasons why the Raiders won this game is the defense played such a key role in the first three quarters of the game the Raiders held the Cowboys to a single digit in scoring for each quarter. Each time the Cowboys would get close to the red zone the Raiders would close the gap on them and force a turnover.

The other cause for the loss was the four pass interference calls that Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown got while defending the Raiders. On the fourth interference call on Brown came in overtime that put the ball in great field position for Carlson to be able to kick the 29 yard winner and take the Raiders home.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr also had a great afternoon under center throwing 24-39 for 373 yards passing getting one touchdown. Carr didn’t allow a turnover and held onto the rock when he got sacked two times. Carr avoided moving the chains and relied on his receivers including Desean Jackson whose made a difference. Jackson three catches for 102 yards and one touchdown.

The Cowboys falling against AFC West opponents like they did last Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs 19-9. The Raiders jumped right in with a big lead in the beginning, keeping that lead all the way until almost the end of the game.

Carr had a tremendous leadership role in leading the team really the whole game in big third down conversions all game long. Jackson had a great game at receiver and seems to be fitting in really well with the Raiders in that one two tandem of wide receiver with Zay Jones. It seems to be working out at the wide receiver angle along with wide receiver Bryan Edwards who helped out with one reception and 12 yards.

The Raiders now will have ten days off and play the Washington Football Team (4-6) coming in to Allegiant Stadium in a real big game on Sun Dec 5th. For the Raiders who have their eye on trying to get a shot at post season. Washington had a four game losing streak going before winning two in a row against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) and Carolina Panthers (5-6). The Panthers being Washington’s most recent win.
