Raiders Defense Finishes Off Patriots With a Late Game Safety 21-17

The Las Vegas Raiders defense stepped up, and stepped up big in the final 1:47 of the fourth quarter. The Raiders were clinging onto a 19-17 lead. The Patriots had the ball but the Raiders defense forced them deep into their own territory. The Raiders defense closed out this game in the end zone with a safety courtesy of Maxx Crosby and Bilal Nichols in a 21-17 win. The Raiders have now won back to back games.

The Las Vegas Raiders (3-3) took on a struggling New England Patriot team (1-5) Sunday afternoon at Allegiant Stadium. Neither team is having a stellar season this year and the Raiders reached .500 are in third place behind second place Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West with the Chargers still to play on Monday Night Football. The Raiders have lost some close games this season and Sunday’s game against the Patriots was no exception.

Patriots-Raiders post game recap: It was a defensive first quarter with a single score, a Raider field goal at 6:54, for a 3-0 lead going into the second quarter.

The Raiders extended their lead in the second quarter. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo found Jakobi Meyers for 12 yards and the touchdown. The extra point was good and Las Vegas had a 10-0 lead to start the second quarter. The Patriots got on the scoreboard at 8:38 via a 43 yard field goal and they had cut into the Raiders lead 10-3.

As the game went into the half, the Raiders had tacked on a second field goal now leading 13-3. Garoppolo was hurt in the closing minutes of the second quarter after having a very efficient first half of football. He was 14 of 22 for 162 yards and one interception. He was transported to a local hospital with a possible back injury. Back-up quarterback Brian Hoyer replaced Garoppolo under center to start the third quarter. He had not thrown a single pass this season.

New England had won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Patriots had a successful opening drive in the third quarter. They had not scored a touchdown in 12 quarters but that all changed when Ezekiel Elliott rushed up the middle for two yards and the Patriots finally had scored a touchdown after quite a drought.

New England now trailed the Raiders by a field goal 13-10. The Raiders Daniel Carlson kicked his third field goal of the day, a 30 yard kick giving Las Vegas a 16-10 lead.

Back-up quarterback Hoyer delivered the Raiders longest pass of the season in the third quarter, a 48-yard strike to Tre Tucker which set up the field goal attempt. The Raiders had been in the red zone twice in the second half; once in the third quarter and as it turned out once in the fourth.

Carlson was having a banner day kicking his fourth field goal, this one a 24 yarder, and the Raiders had a 19-10 lead. Las Vegas needed their defense to protect their lead and hand the Patriots their fifth loss of the season.

The Patriots had a great deal of success in the air in the fourth quarter putting together a great drive that would take, unfortunately for them, 9:30 off the game clock. A quarterback hit by the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby put this game in real jeopardy giving the Patriots a first and goal.

New England scored the touchdown and the Raiders would have to fight for this win leading by the slimmest of margins 19-17 with 3:36 left in the game. Las Vegas could not keep their final drive going and the Patriots had one final chance with 2:23 left on the clock and no timeouts.

A Raider win would be in the hands of their defense as this game went down to the wire. Las Vegas closed out this game in Crosby style stuffing Patriot quarterback Mac Jones in the end zone for the safety and a 21-17 lead and that was the ball game.

So much went down in this game from start to finish. The Raiders had a nice first half unfortunately culminating in the injury of Garoppolo right before half time. The fact that he went to a local hospital right after the injury does not bode well for Las Vegas.

Yes the Raiders won this game but they settled for four field goals while inside the red zone. This does not often win a lot of games. Hoyer had some really nice passes although failed to find the end zone. He did drive the team downfield a couple of times which culminated in two field goals. The Raiders’ defense came up huge in that final Patriots drive with the safety and the 21-17 win.

Next week the Raiders will travel to Chicago to take on another struggling team, the Bears. The Raiders will possibly be playing without Garoppolo and in that event Hoyer will take his place after looking pretty good in the Patriot game. Kick off at Soldier Field is at 10:00AM PT on Sun Oct 22.

Hoyer did not score any touchdowns in today’s game but he also had not thrown a single pass this season. It was a decent game for him and now he has some invaluable time with the team in game day situation. This is yet another game that Las Vegas has the ability to win and they should come into the game with a lot of confidence after today’s win.

Raiders End Three-Game Losing Streak Beating Packers 17-13

The Green Bay Packers Rudy Ford (20) tries to hold back the Las Vegas Raiders Jakobi Meyers (16) Meyers was able to score in the first half at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Mon Oct 9, 2023 (AP News photo)

The Raiders Amik Robertson bid the Packers “good night” intercepting a Jordan Love pass in the end zone with 1:12 left in the game and breaking their three game losing streak. The final was 17-13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Packers took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. Anders Carlson had made a first quarter 37 Yard field goal for the early lead.

The Raiders took the lead in the second quarter scoring twice. With four minutes left in the half Jakobi Meyers caught a nine yard pass from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo taking a 7-3 lead. With a nice defensive effort, the Raiders got the ball back and were able to get to within field goal range with 2:32 left in the second quarter. Daniel Carlson made a 26 yard field goal giving Las Vegas a 10-3 lead after two quarters.

The Packers would tie up this game mid-way through the third quarter when A.J. Dillon rushed for five yards and the touchdown. It was a new ball game 10-10. At 5:16 Carlson kicked a 22 yards Field Goal taking back the lead for the Raiders 13-10.

The Raiders Josh Jacobs would rush for two yards and the touchdown to open the fourth quarter pushing their lead to 17-13. The Packers put together a nice drive in the final two minutes of this game. Green Bay Quarterback Jordan Love went for broke throwing into the end zone with 1:12 left in the game.

Raider CB Amik Robertson put the finishing touches in this game intercepting that pass and that was the ball game 17-13. Coming into this game the Raiders only had one pick all season and tonight they intercepted three times.

Jimmy Garoppolo had one interception but he also threw for 208 yards and a touchdown. RB Josh Jacobs rushed for 69 yards and Meyers had 75 receiving yards. WR Davante Adams was only targeted four times and finished with 45 yards.

Raiders post game notes: Monday night the Las Vegas Raiders (2-3) were on the national stage taking on the Green Bay Packers (2-3). Last week the Raiders are coming off a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers 24-17. The Chargers scored two touchdowns in the second quarter of that game which made all the difference in the Las Vegas loss.

The Packers also lost last weekend in their matchup with the Detroit Lions 34-20. The Raiders have lost three games in a row and want to get back on the winning track especially since they are playing at Allegiant Stadium. Raiders fans have not had much to cheer about and Las Vegas would change all that Monday night.

Next Sun Oct 15th the Raiders will take on the New England Patriots playing a second game at Allegiant looking to even their season record. Kickoff is scheduled for at 1:05 PM.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: O’Connell shows promise despite Raiders falling short to Chargers

Las Vegas Raiders center Andre Jones (68) celebrates a touchdown scored by quarterback Aidan O’Connell (4) in the first half against the Los Angeles Chargers at So Fi Stadium in Inglewood on Sun Oct 1, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich:

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell who stepped in for starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who is recovering from a concussion, showed a lot of promise going 24-39 for 236 yards, no touchdowns, one pick.

O’Connell made a few mistakes he kind of hung wide receiver Devante Adams out to dry on a play over the middle where Adams ended up getting hurt that’s why it’s important that you don’t have a rookie quarterback make those kind of mistakes.

Los Angeles offensive line backer and ex Raider Khalil Mack was all over the place showing why the Raiders shouldn’t have let him go. Mack had six sacks on the day so O’Connell will remembered who floored him during this game.

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs had a solid performance and looked like the Jacobs of last year and it’s taken him a little bit to get back in shape. The hold out didn’t help him and now it looks like he’s back and Jacobs has been practicing with the team and Sunday was evident of that he really had a great game.

Raiders Drop to 1-3 Losing to the Chargers 24-17

Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Jerry Tillery, center, is confronted by Los Angeles Chargers players after Tillery hit Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert late as Herbert ran out of bounds during the first half at So Fi Stadium in Inglewood on Sun Oct 1, 2023 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Los Angeles Chargers (2-2) were able to get past the Las Vegas Raiders (1-3) Sunday afternoon thanks to Kalil Mack’s six sacks coupled with three Justin Herbert’s touchdowns. The final was 24-17 in favor of Los Angeles. The six sacks from Mack was a franchise record for a single game.

Sunday afternoon the NFL entered the fourth week of the season. The Raiders took on the Chargers in Inglewood at SoFi Stadium. The Raiders were without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who is still on concussion protocol and ruled out for today’s game.

Going into the game the Raiders had to choose between Aidan O’Connell, who was a fourth-round draft pick without a single regular season game under his belt. The other choice, another shaky one, Brian Hoyer who has not won an NFL start since October of 2016 and has lost 12 straight starts.

It’s a very concerning situation for the Raiders so early in the season. We’ve seen terrible quarterback situations throughout the NFL to start 2023 and we have also seen how it can disable an entire team.

After the opening quarter this game was tied at seven. The Chargers were first up on the scoreboard. Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert rushed for 12 yards at 10:38 taking the early 7-0. The Raiders answered right back when their quarterback rushed for one yard and a touchdown with .45 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter.

Los Angeles took over in the second quarter of the game. The Chargers got the quarter going with a 33 yard field goal. They would follow this up with a Herbert pass to Keenan Allen for seven yards and the Chargers had a 17-7 lead. Justin Herbert would score his second rushing touchdown of the game, this one another one yard rush. At the half, the Chargers had a 24-7 lead.

The Chargers did not score in the second half of play. The Raider defense held up their end of the deal but the Las Vegas offense not so much. They did score a field goal in the third quarter, a 22 yard kick from Daniel Carlson. The Raiders now trailed by the score of 24-10.

Las Vegas had an opportunity in the fourth quarter when Josh Jacobs rushed for one yard and the touchdown; they were seven points away from tying this game. Throughout the game, Khalil Mack recorded six sacks making life pretty miserable for O’Connell. The Raiders did have the ball in the closing minutes but failed to score. The final was 24-17.

It was an up and down game for the Raiders. O’Connell had three fumbles losing two of them and he also had an interception for the three turnovers. He passed for 238 yards. Josh Jacobs had eight catches for 81 yards and Davante Adams had 75 reception yards. Jacobs also turned in 58 rushing yards.

The Raiders had some great chances in the second half. Their defense held tight but the offense just came up short despite scoring twice, once in the third quarter and again in the final quarter. Las Vegas now drops to 1-3 for the season.

In week 5, the Raiders will meet the Green Bay Packers in a Monday night showdown. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 5:15 PM. The Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is projected to start this game.

San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture, left, confers with referee Gord Dwyer in the third period of an NHL hockey game against the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday, March 7, 2023, in Denver. (AP file photo)

On the SJ Sharks podcast with Troy:

#1 San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn on center and team captain Logan Couture is still waiting how Couture’s lower body injury comes along. Quinn is of a cautious approach not to bring Couture not too fast but is hoping he could be ready by opening day.

#2 Right now Couture is week to week Quinn and the lower body injury has kept him from skating with the team so it’ll be a question as to how season ready he’ll be when he gets back on the ice again.

#3 Courture got hurt in the off season training and looks as if the injury built up gradually to the point he had discomfort skating. Couture has said that he hates sitting and wants to be skating with his teammates.

#4 Troy, talk about the need to have someone like Couture in the line on opening day especially if your opening up against a team like the Vegas Golden Knights who are the NHL champions.

#5 Coach Quinn said that he would love to have Couture ready to go but first and foremost he wants him to be healthy and ready before any of that could be considered.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Garoppolo in concussion protocols after loss to Steelers, Raiders haven’t decided if he can start Sunday

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was evaluated after Sunday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers for a concussion and was placed in concussion protocols. How is his outlook for this Sunday’s game in Southland?

#2 Garoppolo played in every snap on Sunday night but did not speak with reporters after the game as he was being evaluated immediately after the game.

#3 Garoppolo was 28-44 for 324 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Talk about Garoppolo’s offensive performance.

#4 Garoppolo was wobbly after getting sacked by the Steelers TJ Watt. He reportedly hurt his ankle on the play and it wasn’t reported that he had suffered a concussion right after the play and was helped off the field.

#5 Garoppolo must past concussion protocols before being named the starter for Sunday. There is also a chance that third string quarterback Aidan O’Connell might get the starting call over second stringer Brian Hoyer for Sunday’s game if Garoppolo is out. O’Connell had a good pre season and might get the start.
