#1 New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole who has a sore elbow had imaging done on his right elbow and the Yankees expect to know more about his elbow in two more days. Cole 34, pitched on Thursday against the Minnesota Twins and was lit up for six runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Cole said in the post game presser he felt alright but the elbow was sore after the game.

#2 The Detroit Tigers signed right hand pitcher Jose Urquidy that includes a one year option for 2026 to a $1 million one year deal. Urquidy is 30 and had Tommy John surgery back on Jun 5th. Urquidy also had his first Tommy John in 2017. Urquidy was placed on the 60 day IL and it’s a question on when he will return. Urquidy last pitched in 2023 and went 3-3 with a 5.29 ERA.

#3 One of the scary things about spring training is that one of your highest paid players could down with an injury and miss significant time. The Atlanta Braves Jurickson Profar is hoping that won’t be the case he had to leave Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after jamming his left wrist when he landed on his left arm. X-rays proved negative and the Braves said Profar will go further testing.

#4 Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr said that his contract proposal was significantly lower than New York Mets Juan Soto and was less than $600 million. Guerrero said that he and the Blue Jays failed to secure an extended contract before the start of spring training. Guerrero is eligible to enter the free agency market this November. Guerrero is in his last season of his contract with the Jays.

#5 Two Major League teams two minor league parks. How much of a mistake is this on the decision of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to allow this to happen or did Manfred do the right thing with no choice but to have the Sacramento A’s and the Tampa Bay Rays play in minor league parks for the interim?

#1 Charlie, tell us a little more about what went on when the Phoenix Suns primarily mild mannered Kevin Durant went up and gave an earful to the San Antonio Spurs Chris Paul. Also Paul pulled teammate De’Aaron Fox to get between them during the exchange. Was Paul getting a little physical or was it just frustrations coming out in last Thursday’s game?

#2 Gregg Popovich is not expected to return as head coach for the for the rest of this season. Popovich after suffering from a mile stroke in November. Things got even more difficult for the Spurs with 21 year old Vic Wembanyama out for the rest of the season suffering from blood clots in his right shoulder.

#3 The Sacramento Kings try as hard as they can just couldn’t get past the Golden State Warriors at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on Friday night they were defeated 132-106. It was a game where the Kings just couldn’t shut down Moses Moody and former King Buddy Hield each scoring 22 points.

#4 Spring training has begun and the Sacramento A’s were clobbered in their first Cactus League game at Peoria Sports Complex in Peoria Arizona 10-3 on Saturday. The A’s scoring for the day saw Tyler Soderstrom in the top of the first with a base hit RBI scoring Lawrence Butler. Later in the game Butler hit a 423 foot sixth inning solo shot to right center. In the seventh Daniel Susac hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Drew Avans.

#5 Some big questions were raised if baseball is dying? The answer was due to declining TV viewership and attendance. Charlie would you also chalk up in addition MLB’s rule changes and the robo umpire that’s coming and now you have two teams the A’s and Rays playing in minor league parks as reasons that fans are turning off the game?

#1 Tony talk about the Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins whose returning from a hamstring injury. Collins has the green light to play on Monday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys. Collins had injured the hamstring in week five. The Texans are 6-4 the Cowboys 3-6.

#2 The New England Patriots Christian Barmore has been activated from the reserve/non-football illness list. Barmore is scheduled to return Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Barmore has been out with blood clots and has not played since week 5.

#3 Cincinnati cornerback Marlon Humphrey was fined for two infractions $22,511 for an unflagged unnecessary roughness (use of the helmet) and another $11,255 for face masking. How important is it for Humphrey to keep his cool and avoids those kinds of fines.

#4 The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a three points against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 on Sun Nov 10th. The 49ers host the Seattle Seahawks today at 1:05pm PST. The Seahawks have lost five of their last six games and the 49ers have won three of their last five games. How do you see this match up at Levi Stadium today.

#5 The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Gardner Menshew will once again get the start. Minshew in his last game against the Cincinnati Bengals was 10-17 for 124 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Against the Miami Dolphins today the Raiders need to protect Minshew. In their last game against the Bengals not too much pass rushing as Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow threw for five touchdowns.

#1 Tough opener last Sunday for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders had a 7-6 lead over the Los Angeles Chargers but just couldn’t generate enough offense to get some insurance with the Chargers leading 9-7 in the fourth quarter they scored two touchdowns and put the game out of reach winning it 22-10. Can the Raiders regroup their offense and look to quarterback Gardner Minshew to help create some yards and scoring against a tough Baltimore Ravens defense.

#2 The San Francisco 49ers who won their opener last Sunday with authority over the New York Jets 32-19. The Jets quarterback Aaron Rogers could only do so much as the 49ers defense put him on the run all day and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was mobile throwing for 231 yards. The 49ers are in Minnesota to face former teammate and Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold. Charlie talk about the 49ers in that Jets win last Sunday and will Darnold get enough protection from the 49ers defense today?

#3 The Chicago White Sox are just five games behind tying the 1962 New York Mets who lost 120 games that season a current MLB record. The White Sox on Saturday night ended their seven game losing streak defeating the Oakland A’s 7-6 with the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth the Sox Andrew Benintendi hit a walk off home run for the win.

#4 The San Francisco Giants have been shutout for 27 consecutive innings having been shutout in three consecutive games and getting shutout by the San Diego Padres on Saturday night at Oracle Park 8-0. The Padres used three pitchers to combine for the shutout. Padres starter Joe Musgrove was sharp pitching six innings, allow just three hits.

#5 Charlie, wanted to ask you about the 1530 KFBK Sacramento report last Thursday regarding baseball agents Steve Boras saying that the idea of moving the A’s to Sutter Health Field in Sacramento should be rethought because it’s a health and safety issue to have players worth millions of dollars risking injury playing on a artificial surface. Also the facilities at Sutter Health are minor league no matter how much you try to remodel the park in the off season. Boras added that the A’s should go back to the Oakland Coliseum and negotiate with new Coliseum property owner the African American Sports Entertainment Group and get a good deal to stay at the Coliseum. Also the Major League Players Association has not signed off agreeing to play in Sacramento.

#1 Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins have reached a four year extension agreement worth $212.4M. Tagovailoa’s salary is the highest in Dolphins history. Tagovailoa’s salary is the third highest behind Jacksonville Jaguars Trevor Lawrence and the Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow at $55 million per year.

#2 Charlie O, it’s an Olympic year and it didn’t take long right out of the shoot in Paris when an athlete from Iraq was found to test positive for anabolic steroids. Sajjad Sehen who tested for steroids was found to be positive for metandienone and boldenone. Sehen has been suspended from participating in the games.

#3 After an MRI Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout left knee came back clean. Trout said he had been dealing with scar tissue buildup and inflammation. Trout upon learning the MRI results said “It’s a huge relief for me.” Trout was out with a torn meniscus and had been on the IL since April 30th. Trout was hitting .220, 10 home runs, 14 RBIs in 29 games.

#4 Carolyn McArdle the San Francisco Giants newest permanent PA announcer who was a Sacramento Rivercats PA announcer will be introducing the lineup and other messages at Oracle Park for the rest of the season. After long time former PA announcer Renel did not have her contract renewed last December the Giants had been rotating PA announcers which included Danny Miller the San Jose Sharks and San Jose Earthquakes permanent announcer. McArdle is music director at 98.1 The Breeze.

#5 Other Major League teams have been shopping Oakland A’s outfielder Brent Rooker and pitcher Mason Miller before the trade deadline. Neither are free agents and are making near the minimum and the A’s most likely will hang onto both of them for the rest of this season. Miller is on the 10 day IL after fracturing his pinkie finger in his non throwing hand so he’s been taken off the shelf on any trade rumors.

#1 The Los Angeles Dodgers who got swept by the Philadelphia Phillies and lost two out of three to the Detroit Tigers are looking at ways to back in this thing again. They might be consider making some trades and looking for some help as they have some key players on the IL, Mookie Bets, Clayton Kershaw, Jason Heyward, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Dustin May just to name a few.

#2 The Toronto Blue Jays Bo Bichette is on the ten day IL with a left calf injury. Bichette injured his calf running up the first base line after hitting a line out to right field. How does this effect the Jays missing a bat like Bichette’s.

#3 The Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz was put on the restricted list because of personal family issues. The Rays ended up calling infielder Curtis Mead from the Rays triple A team in Durham.

#4 It’s a Major League debut to be remembered by the Oakland A’s Jacob Wilson but for all the wrong reasons. On Friday night Wilson rounding third base after advancing from second pulled up injured and in the dugout just couldn’t get back on track and had to leave the ball game.

#5 The Las Vegas Stadium Authority hosted a meeting on Thursday with Oakland A’s owner John Fisher’s business partner Sandy Dean at the Las Vegas Convention Center to discuss the plans for the new Las Vegas ballpark on the Vegas Strip. Dean told the Stadium Authority with Authority president Steven Hill on the dais that the A’s plan to spend $350 million of the $380 million of the public money. Neither Hill nor Dean disclosed where or how Fisher will come up with his share of the $500 million towards construction costs will come from. Last report was Fisher was looking for investors to help come up with the costs but still crickets on that as well.

#1 Charlie, who would expect the New York Yankees who had a season best 49-21 through June 12 now at a MLB worst at 6-15. The Yankees blew a three lead when the Boston Red Sox Masataka Yoshida hit a two run homer and Ceddanne Rafaela homered in the 10th inning to give the Sox a 5-3 win on Friday night.

#2 Charlie, you might recall when former Negro Leagues star Buck O’Neil said there were three times he heard that certain thwack off the bat and you knew from that sound that hitter was something special. The list Babe Ruth, Josh Gibson, and Bo Jackson. He might have added the Yankees Aaron Judge to list if he was here today.

#3 The New York Mets activated closer Edwin Diaz. Diaz was suspended after serving a ten day suspension for foreign substance abuse on his hands. Diaz at the time said it was sweat and rosin the umpires ruled it was a foreign substance and he thrown out of the game and later suspended.

#4 The Pittsburgh Pirates tied a franchise record hitting seven home runs defeating the New York Mets 14-2 on Friday night. The Pirates Bryan Reynolds and Rowdy Tellez became the first teammates to hit multiple home runs including a grand slam,. All of the Bucs runs came from the home run.

#5 Last week Nevada District Court Judge Kristin Luis ruled that the Oakland A’s are a private business and cannot get involved any lawsuit to stop Schools over Stadiums from their petition drive to stop Nevada State public money to pay for the Tropicana Park on the Las Vegas Strip. This would give Schools over Stadiums the green light to pursue getting the needed signatures from four districts in Nevada including Las Vegas for a ballot initiative to stop the use of public funds for the ballpark.

#1 The New York Yankees have a lot of history and rookie pitcher Luis Gil just added to another page to the history books with the most strikeouts thrown by a rookie with 14 against the Chicago White Sox in a 6-1 win.

#2 The Baltimore Orioles activated RHP Grayson Rodriguez from the 15 day IL who started against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. Rodriguez came back from a shoulder inflammation injury. Rodriguez one of the keys to the Orioles pitching staff is 4-1 with a 3.71 ERA.

#3 Former Los Angeles Angels infielder David Fletcher and who is playing infield for the Atlanta Braves triple A affiliate has reportedly been placing bets with the same Los Angeles bookmaker Matthew Bowyer that Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter Ippei Mizuhara used. Fletcher’s close friend Colby Schultz who played in the Kansas City Royals farm system from 2018-2020 bet on baseball during his playing days. It was reported that Fletcher did not bet on baseball.

#4 On San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell, Snell returned to pitch at the Giants triple A affiliate you might have heard of them the Sacramento Rivercats. Snell was out with a shoulder injury threw five innings of no hit baseball and struck out ten batters.

#5 The Chicago Cubs rookie pitcher Shota Imanaga got into the history books by recording the lowest ERA 0.84 for any rookie in his first nine starts since it was last done back in 1913. Looking at Imanaga reaction after striking out his seventh batter he was even amazed at himself.

#1 Top topic lack of Las Vegas A’s plans are stalling MGM Grand remodeling plans. The MGM is waiting for the future Las Vegas A’s to come up with with blueprints so they can figure in their remodeling plans. MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle said he’s been shown three different plans as to where the ballpark will sit on the site. Problem is the A’s do not have a definite design that has been decided on and Hornbuckle wants to get on with his construction at the MGM so he can build a pedestrian bridge to the ballpark.

#2 The A’s further have met with the Oakland Coliseum Joint Authority and have not come to an agreement for a lease extension that would have them play at the Coliseum from 2025-27 three years. Major League Baseball is in a bit of a pickle the A’s need to make a decision soon as the 2025 schedules come out in July but the City of Oakland wants MLB to guarantee an expansion team for Oakland and Rob Manfred said the Bay Area already has a team and that should be good enough.

#3 The Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry edged out the New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu in the three point contest at the NBA All Star Game in Indianapolis Saturday night 29-26. Ionescu hit seven straight three points for the 26 points.

#4 Mac McClung won back to back slam dunk contests and is now the fifth NBA player to have back to back wins in the slam dunk competition. McClung surpassed Shaq O’Neil with a 50 point slam over all people Shaq who was holding the ball above his had for the record setting dunk.

#5 Wanted to get a chance to ask you about the firing of former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks who got the blame for the 49ers loss in the Super Bowl. Talk about what mistakes he made and how does a defensive coordinator who contributed highly on his defense takes a team to the Super Bowl and ends up getting fired?

Headline Sports with Charlie O: Pierce to stay on as Raiders head coach for 24 season; Cowboys McCarthy not expected to return; plus more news

#1 Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce will be staying on for the 2024 season. Pierce led the Raiders went 5-4 as interim coach taking over for Josh McDaniels who was fired as head coach.

#2 What was impressive of the job that Pierce did was some of the wins he had the most memorable was the win over the Los Angeles Chargers 63-21 on Dec 14th. The Raiders also went onto beat the Kansas City Chiefs the following week and won their last game of the season defeating the Denver Broncos. There is little doubt that the players not only like coach Pierce but requested that he come back. They’re thankful that owner Mark Davis obliged.

#3 Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is not expected to get a contract extension after the Cowboys had a huge let down in their playoff game against the Green Bay Packers on Sun Dec 14 in Dallas. Jones is still considering the extension but it’s been reported as being unlikely. The Cowboys were 67-42 in the regular season but are only 1-3 in post season under McCarthy.

#4 Bill Belichick has met with the Atlanta Falcons brass twice. The Falcons fired coach Arthur Smith after three seasons at the helm on Jan 8th. Belichick reportedly has only interviewed with the Falcons and no other NFL teams. Belichick coached the New England Patriots for 24 seasons and led them to six Super Bowl titles.

#5 The Philadelphia Eagles Jason Kelce said that when the time comes to retire he will do it formerly and not after an emotional game. Kelce 36, was one of the best NFL centers and selected to the Pro Bowl six times. How will his retirement impact the Eagles?
