SAN JOSE — The San Jose Barracuda were unable to clinch the playoffs as they dropped a 7-4 decision to the Stockton Heat at SAP Center on Friday night.

The Barracuda celebrated the luck of the Irish with Freebie Friday specials for all fans in attendance. Also, parents brought their children to play games in Frenzy’s Fun Zone.

The opening period was filled with tons of action.

The Barracuda jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the power play at 15:25. After a brawl between players from both teams, Mikkel Aagaard was given an interference penalty. San Jose capitalized with the man advantage as Barclay Goodrow beat David Rittich top-shelf for his 20th goal of the season.

The Heat responded with a power play goal of their own to tie the score 1-1 at 12:58. Jacob Middleton was called for slashing. Stockton capitalized with the man advantage as Mark Jankowski beat Mantas Armalis stick side for his 23rd of the season.

The Heat took a 2-1 lead when Garnet Hathaway picked up a pass from Andrew Mangiapane, beating Armalis for his sixth goal of the season at 17:53.

Brandon Bollig scored an unassisted goal for his 10th of the season to extend the Heat’s lead to 3-1 at 18:18.

The momentum changed when the Barracuda capitalized with the man advantage after Kayle Doetzel was called for high-sticking late in the game. Daniel O’Regan fired a shot that beat Rittich top-shelf for his 20th goal of the season.

Shots were 12-7 in favor of the Barracuda, however, they trailed the Heat 3-2 after 20 minutes.

The Heat poured in the goals in the middle period.

Buddy Robinson served a double minor for high-sticking early in the period. Matt Frattin fired a one-timer over Armalis’ shoulder to give the Heat a 4-2 lead just 1:32 later for his 18th goal of the season.

Hathaway was called for hooking at 14:55. Shortly after, Stockton capitalized on the power play as Linden Vey scored his 13th goal of the season.

The Barracuda pulled within two with a power play goal of their own at 11:05. Julius Bergman pulled the puck to the open shooting lane and fired a shot on net that was tipped by John McCarthy, who notched his 16th of the season.

The Heat made it a 6-3 game when Michael Kostka’s backhand shot beat Armalis’ seven-hole for his third goal of the season.

Shots were tied 18-18, but the Barracuda continued to trail the Heat 6-3 after 40 minutes.

Bollig went to the box for hooking just 3:16 into the final period, giving the Barracuda a power play. Joakim Ryan fired a shot from the point that beat Rittich for his eighth of the season to pull his team within two just a little over 30 seconds later.

“Tough night for everyone tonight, obviously,” Ryan said when asked about Armalis and the Barracuda’s defense. “That wasn’t our best defensive effort and we have a lot of things to tighten up before tomorrow’s game in Stockton. Tough game.”

Vey scored his second of the game and 14th of the season on the empty net to seal a 7-4 victory for the Heat. Rittich finished with 26 saves for Stockton.

Armalis made 16 saves and allowed seven goals, including an empty-netter, in a losing effort.

“Not really, we blocked 20 shots,” head coach Roy Sommer said when asked if there was anything defensively the Barracuda could work on. “You keep a team to 20 shots and you’re playing pretty good hockey. You had 20 shots or 18 shots so it wasn’t like our defense was that bad.”

The Barracuda (37-13-2-4) head to Stockton Arena Saturday where they’ll take on the Heat (27-24-4-1) at 7:30 p.m. PST on AHL Live and AM 1220 KDOW.

SAN JOSE–It was a big game against the San Diego Gulls last Sunday March 5th as the San Jose Barracuda got a shutout behind Troy Grosenick 25 save game. Daniel O’Regan got his 19th goal in the victory and he’s working the offense that he might just have a shot at making the Sharks roster if there ever is an opening there. The game with the Bakersfield Condors on Tuesday was a close but yet commanding one goal win 4-3 which was a capper for the Barracuda. In talking with Cuda head coach Roy Sommer he’s been pleased with what he’s seen including that unforgettable 14 game winning streak one shy of the AHL win streak record.

San Jose Barracuda Sunday game wrap: Grosenick stops 25 shots in order to get 3-0 shutout

sjbarracuda.com photo: San Jose Barracuda goaltender Troy Grosenick (1) takes up his position to stop the San Diego Gulls from scoring. Grosenick gets the shutout with 25 saves on Saturday night at SAP Center

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Barracuda blanked the San Diego Gulls 3-0 at SAP Center on Sunday afternoon.

Despite a lack of action in the first period, the Barracuda and Gulls played high-quality defense.

Kevin Labanc took a high-sticking penalty at 10:59, giving the Gulls a power play. However, San Diego was unable to capitalize with the man advantage.

These two teams skated to a scoreless tie after 20 minutes. The Gulls outshot the Barracuda 10-4.

Sam Carrick was called for cross-checking at 7:44, allowing the Barracuda to go on the power play. Kevin Labanc sent a pass to Daniel O’Regan, who fired the puck into the net to beat Kevin Boyle. The Gulls challenged the play for goaltender interference, but the call stood, and O’Regan recorded his 19th goal of the season.

“I thought we had some good possession in the zone,” O’Regan said when asked about his power-play goal. “The guys were all around. We were getting some good shots…I had myself in an awkward spot in the corner and saw the goalie (Kevin Boyle) going down a bit, so I decided to try one. It went top-shelf and it worked out.”

O’Regan commented on the Barracuda’s defense, saying: “I thought we struggled a bit getting shots early on, but as the game went on, we kept getting better and better.”

Shortly after, Mirco Mueller sent a puck to the stands, receiving a delay of game penalty. Then, Buddy Robinson scored a short-handed goal for his 12th of the season to give the Barracuda a 2-0 lead at 5:24.

“Rourke (Chartier) got a piece of it and knocked it out to me,” Robinson said when asked about his short-handed goal. “I saw an open lane and put my head down and skated hard. It was good to get a reward there.”

The Barracuda took a 2-0 lead to the locker room after 40 minutes. Shots were tied 17-17.

Barclay Goodrow scored an empty-net goal — his 19th of the season — with 1:31 left in regulation to seal the scoring for the Barracuda.

The Barracuda (36-12-2-4) extended their win streak with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Gulls (34-15-3-2). Troy Grosenick stopped all 25 shots he faced.

“We were really solid again,” Grosenick said when asked about the Barracuda’s defense. “We kept things on the outside. Skilled teams like them are going to get their chances and they did. I thought we did a good job clearing up the rebounds.”

Boyle made 23 saves in a losing effort.

“I think we just got through the first (period),” Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer said. “We were outshot by them (Gulls) and outchanced by a couple, but I think the power plays helped because we haven’t gotten a lot of power plays…We put (Kevin) Labanc back there and that kind of got us going. Once we got that goal, we kind of took off.”

The Barracuda head to Rabobank Arena to take on the Bakersfield Condors (26-22-5-1) on Tuesday night. You can tune into the game on AHL Live and AM 1220 KDOW.

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Barracuda edged the Grand Rapids Griffins in a shootout at SAP Center on Saturday night. The Barracuda’s Danny O’Regan scored the game winning goal in a shootout overtime for a 1-0 Barracuda win over the Griffins.

The game began with a ceremonial first puck drop by Erik Kuhre, the winner of the Barracuda fan designed jersey contest.

Mirco Mueller was called for cross-checking at 8:52 of the first period. The Barracuda successfully killed the penalty.

The Barracuda and Griffins skated to a scoreless tie after 20 minutes. Shots were 11-10 in favor of San Jose.

The Barracuda received a power play opportunity just 1:24 into the second period after Matthew Ford was called for high-sticking.

The Barracuda received a second power play opportunity when Michael Frk was called for high-sticking with 57 seconds left in the period.

However, the Barracuda were unable to capitalize on either man advantage. They went 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Barracuda outshot the Griffins 20-14, but the game remained in a scoreless tie after 40 minutes.

The Barracuda power play seemed to be terrible as they were unable to capitalize on their third power play after Tyler Bertuzzi was called for slashing at 10:29 of the third period.

The game went into overtime after a scoreless 60 minutes.

The Barracuda (35-12-2-4) bounced back to beat the Griffins (38-17-1-3) by a score of 2-1 in a shootout after a scoreless overtime period. In the first round, neither John McCarthy or Evgeny Svechnikov scored. In the second round, Kevin Labanc scored for the Barracuda. In the third round, Matt Lorito tied the score, but Daniel O’Regan scored the game-winning goal.

Troy Grosenick stopped all 22 shots he faced in the victory. Jared Coreau stopped all 31 shots he faced in a losing effort.

“The tight checking was pretty defensive,” Grosenick said. “I’m glad we were able to pull it out in a shootout.”

“Unbelievable,” O’Regan said when asked about Grosenick’s performance. “He just seems to always help us out at every game. They’re all point blank chances and he’s always there with the slide and his legs ready.”

“I thought it was really good,” Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer said when asked about the defense. “That’s an offensive team, but we kept them down…Overall, I thought we did a really good job at keeping the plays to the outside.”

The Barracuda play the second of back-to-back games when they host the San Diego Gulls (34-14-3-2) at 1:15 p.m. PST Sunday afternoon on AHL Live and AM 1220 KDOW.

These two teams went on a 4-on-4 for 12 seconds and then a one minute power play to start the second period. Also, Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer made a goaltender change as Mantas Armalis replaced Grosenick, who allowed five goals on 13 shots in the first period.

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Barracuda edged the San Diego Gulls 4-3 in overtime at SAP Center on Sunday night.

The Barracuda were looking to start a new winning streak after dropping a 2-1 decision to the Texas Stars (26-27-1-2) in a shootout Wednesday night. Prior to that, San Jose won 14 straight games. They fell to the Stockton Heat (23-23-4-1) by a score of 4-2 on Saturday night.

The Gulls didn’t waste any time getting on the board. Just 19 seconds into the opening period, Ryan Carpenter was called for hooking, giving the visiting team a power play. Corey Tropp picked up a pass from Shea Theodore and beat Troy Grosenick for his 16th goal of the season 39 seconds later.

Michael Brodzinski set up a pass to Barclay Goodrow, who stuffed the puck through traffic to beat Kevin Boyle for his 17th goal of the season, tying the game 1-1 at 13:10.

Shea Theodore received a pass from Spencer Abbott and made a move to beat Boyle five-hole for his third goal of the season, giving the Gulls a 2-1 lead with 1:09 left in the period.

Shots were 12-5 in favor of the Gulls, who led the Barracuda 2-1 after 20 minutes.

The Barracuda displayed a lack of speed and transition in the second period.

Timo Meier tipped in a shot for a game-tying goal late in the period. However, Terry Koharski disagreed with Meier’s thought, declaring no goal for the Barracuda.

Nic Kerdiles sent a cross-ice pass to Sam Carrick, who fired the puck into the net to extend the Gulls’ lead to 3-1 with 50 seconds left in the period.

The Gulls carried a 3-1 lead to the locker room after 40 minutes, outshooting the Barracuda 24-10.

The Barracuda mounted a comeback in the third period with two goals in a span of 2:35. They made it a one-goal game with 2:51 left in regulation when Buddy Robinson found Rourke Chartier, who jammed the puck into the net past Boyle for his 13th of the season. Then, Daniel O’Regan scored on a wrist shot from the point for his 17th of the season, tying the score 3-3 with 15.7 seconds left in regulation.

The game headed into overtime, thanks to a pair of late Barracuda goals. O’Regan scored the game-winner with 54.1 seconds left, recording his 18th of the season, lifting the Barracuda to a 4-3 overtime win over the Gulls (32-14-3-2).

“It’s tough to get going,” O’Regan said. “But everybody stayed positive and that was the difference.”

Grosenick finished with 26 saves in the San Jose victory. Boyle made 25 saves in a losing effort for San Diego.

“It was a great, come-from-behind win,” Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer said when asked about the significance of Sunday’s overtime win. “That doesn’t happen very much, where you score two empty-netters and then get the overtime win…It was good for everyone’s mojo…I’m sure they’ll remember this.”

The Barracuda (34-12-1-4) head to Stockton to take on the Heat this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PST on AHL Live and AM 1220 KDOW.
