Barracuda dominate Firebirds in 5-1 win, extend winning streak to five

San Jose Barracuda forward Andrew Poturalski, who was the number one star of the game, battles with Coachella Valley Firebirds defenseman Gustav Oloffson during the Barracuda’s 5-1 win over the Firebirds at Tech CU Arena on Wednesday OCT 30, 2024.

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Barracuda are scorching hot.

Team Teal had five different goal scorers in a 5-1 route of the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Wednesday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose has won a season best five games in a row and just their second game against their Pacific Division rival. Coachella Valley has lost their third game in five games.

San Jose (6-1) drew first blood with an even strength goal in the first period. Brandon Coe intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and skated into Coachella Valley zone. Coe threaded a pass to an unmarked Luke Grainger who made one move to get Firebirds goalie Ales Stezka to go down before roofing a backhander top-shelf for his first goal of the season at the 7:34 mark.

The Barracuda doubled its lead 58 seconds later. Luca Cagnoni kept the puck inside the Firebirds zone. The rookie defenseman found Andrew Poturalksi along the slot and Poturalski’s shot deflected off of the leg of Colin Graf and into the back of the net for Graf’s third goal of the season at the 8:32 mark.

Coachella Valley (2-3) had 12 shots on net in the opening frame but weren’t able to solve the mystery known as Barracuda goalie Yaroslav Askarov who made some key stops to keep the Firebirds off of the scoreboard.

The Firebirds cut the lead in half midway through the second period. Jager Firkus found Ben Meyers down low behind the net. Meyers made a move to get past Shakir Mukhamadullin before skating out from behind the net and lifting a backhander past Askarov for his second goal of the season at the 10:30 mark.

San Jose regained their two-goal lead with a short-handed goal. Justin Bailey won a battle along the boards and sent a pass up the ice that sprung Colin White on a breakaway. White beat Stezka with a back hand shot for his third goal of the season at the 13:02 mark.

The Barracuda earned its biggest lead of the contest early in the third period. Donovan Houle, who had a great night throwing his body around against the Firebirds, threw a shot on net that was initially saved by Stezka. Lucas Vanroyboys crashed the net and on is second attempt cleaned up the rebound for his second goal of the season at the 3:52 mark.

Poturalski completed the scoring with an empty net from deep inside his own zone for his third goal of the season at the 16:50 mark as Coachella Valley pulled their goalie with over four minutes remaining in the final frame.

Askarov (5-0) remained undefeated as he stopped 36 of the 37 shots to earn his fifth win of the season. Stekaz (1-3) made 33 save on 37 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-2 on the power play. Coachella Valley was 0-for-1.

San Jose is 2-10-2-3 in the all-time series with Coachella Valley.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Poturalski 2) Askarov 3) Grainger.

UP NEXT: San Jose heads to the Midwest this weekend to take on the Iowa Wild in a two-games series. The first game is Saturday 11/2 at 4:00pm at Wells Fargo Arena.

Two in a Row First Victory at Home For Sharks Against the Kings 4-2

Jake Walman (96) being cheered by his teammates after scoring the first goal of the night in the 2nd Period at SAP Center tonight in San Jose on Tues Oct 29, 2024 (San Jose Sharks Public Relations)

Nothing better than a victory at home as the Sharks won 4-2 against Los Angeles at SAP Center

By Fernando Abarca

After an almost winless road trip for the Sharks, they found a way to win it all in overtime on Monday night against Utah. They replicated the same success against the Kings tonight, finding revenge from last week’s game at Crypto Arena.

After the first win for the Sharks in Utah, the task was straightforward, to repeat the same. The setting was very familiar: empty seats, little or no atmosphere, feelings of disappointment, and the gut feeling that the cycle was repeating itself.

The victory at home not only boosts the team’s confidence but is also a statement of hope and belief.

The first period passed without much of an action or relevance, which seemed to be unique, knowing the locals were facing the second-best team in the Pacific.

The action started to take place past the first 20 minutes of Hockey. Jake Walman added the first one of the night with a powerful slap shot for the locals, assisted by N. Sturm C. Grundstrom in the Kings’ zone st the 2.20 of the game.

The lead did not last that long, and the Kings netted to tie things up. Akil Thomas, with a wrist shot, made it 1-1 after a poor defensive labor by the Sharks.

Hockey was getting Red Hot after the conclusion of the second period.

Fabian Zetterland opened up the scoring of the third and his sixth goal of the season and a three-game point streak elevating the vibe at SAP Center with a 2-1 score at the 06:25 in the third.

Then, LA, once again, comes back with an assist by W. Foegele from the back of the net and Alex Laferriere making it 2-2.

It was time to set the tone, and that is exactly what the Sharks did towards the conclusion of the period.

Tyler Toffoli, the former LA King, made it 3-2 and put another number in his personal stats with six goals so far in the season.

With the score at 3-2, the home team knew how to take advantage of the moment. The Kings opted to use an empty net to play with a 6-5 William Eklund, with an empty netter sealed the victory of the night for the Sharks. A much-needed victory to start climbing in the standings and compete.

With ambition and desire, the Sharks will now have the opportunity to make it three consecutive victories this coming Thursday night, and they will do so against the last team in the Central Division, Connor Bedard’s Chicago Blackhawks.

Kings Clock First Road Win At the Expense of the Jazz 113-96

By Barbara Mason

The Sacramento Kings got going early and they continued to compete at a high level for the entire game. They outscored the Jazz in the first three quarters with the final score 113-96.

The bench got to play the final four minutes of the game with the exception of Malik Monk, Keon Ellis and Trey Lyles who played extended minutes. Domantas Sabonis turned in another double double with 28 points and 11 rebounds. This was the Kings first road win and the win leveled their season to 2-2.

Game recap: The Kings got a jump start on the Jazz in the first quarter of play leading 34-22 after the opening 12 minutes. Utah challenged the Kings in the second quarter of play outscoring Sacramento 30-27. The Kings took a 61-52 lead into the locker room at the half.

Sacramento came into the second half extending their lead 75-60 mid-way through the quarter. The Kings had their entire starting roster already at double digits with 1 1/2 quarters left in the game.

Domantas Sabonis was leading the way through 2 1/2 quarters with another double double, 22 points and ten rebounds. With under one minute left in the third quarter Sacramento had taken a 24 point lead.

The Kings kept the pressure on Utah the entire quarter outscoring the Jazz in the quarter 29-14 shooting at 52% from the field to the Jazz’s 34% and leading going into the fourth quarter 90-66. Through three quarters the Kings had protected the ball well with only ten turnovers.

Sacramento really poured it on in the fourth quarter taking as much as a 27 point lead. The last few minutes saw the Kings bench take the court to finish off Utah. Sacramento had 24 second chance points to the Jazz’s 12.

The Jazz did win the final quarter 30-23 but the Kings had such a huge lead it made little difference. The game final was 113-96 as Sacramento picked up their first road win and leveled their season record to 2-2.

Sacramento was shooting lights out in this game. Domantas Sabonis shot the high for the Kings with a double double, 28 points and 11 rebounds. DeMar DeRozan finished with 20 points closely followed by De’Aaron Fox with 19 points.

Every starter finished with double digits in a well-played game . The Kings dominated the entire night against a young Utah team. After such a rough pre-season and losing the first two games of the regular season, the wins Tuesday night and last night were signs of the turnaround this team is experiencing. This was not unexpected; it was just a matter of time.

The high for the Jazz was Jordan Clarkson who scored 21 points. The Jazz lost ace Lauri Markkanen who had to leave the floor at halftime with lower back spasms, a crushing blow for Utah when he was unable to return in the second half. Utah is still looking for their first win of the season after losing their first four starts.

Game notes: Tuesday night the Kings defeated the Jazz in Utah after winning their first game of the season Monday night beating the Portland Trail Blazers 111-98. De’Aaron Fox and DeMar DeRozan both had productive games as DeRozan seems to be settling into the starting lineup very nicely. The Jazz dropped their third game in a row losing to the Dallas Mavericks 110-102 Monday night. Sacramento handed Utah their fifth loss in a row Monday night.

Sacramento will have a few days off before returning to the court on Friday night taking on the Hawks in Atlanta. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM.

#1 On the San Francisco 49ers Christian McCaffrey doesn’t look like he has any set back and could be back. Deebo Samuel was seen wearing a oxygen mask leaving the game early talking to a doctor. Amaury no doubt the 49ers would like to see McCaffrey back and hope that Samuel is feeling better both are looking forward to the bye week this weekend.

#2 At some point the San Jose Sharks had to finally end their nine game losing streak and they pulled it off on Monday defeating the Utah Hockey Club in overtime 5-4. The Sharks last season lost their first ten games to start last season and have to be very relieved to get in the win column.

#3 Amaury, talk about how important was it for the Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani to return for game 3 in New York after suffering from the left dislocated shoulder on a slide into second base in game 2 in LA.

#4 In the US the World Series is pulling a TV viewership of 16 million plus in Japan the World Series is pulling over 15 million viewers so Ohtani has done wonders for the series viewership.

#5 Amaury talk about long time Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez who won the Roberto Clemente Award. Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: It’s back to the drawing board for Raiders; Vegas heads to Cincinnati to face Bengals Sunday

Las Vegas running back Alexander Mattison (22) runs the ball on the Kansas City Chiefs safety Nazeeh Johnson (13) in first half action at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Oct 27, 2024 (AP News photo)

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria:

#1 Close game actually closer than the score the Raiders tried to keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. The Chiefs had a 17-13 lead midway in the third quarter.

#2 Up to that point in the game did it look like Raiders would be able to hold back the Chiefs it looked like the defense was working for Vegas through the third quarter.

#3 The Chiefs broke it open in the fourth quarter when the kicker Hunter Bulker booted a 24 yarder with 8:44 left to make it 20-13 so the Raiders now trailed by a touchdown.

#4 The Chiefs later would put the game out of reach with 4:59 left in the game when quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a nine yard pass to wide out Xavier Worthy for a touchdown making it 27-13. The Raiders would add another seven points when quarterback Gardner Minshew threw an 11 pass to wide out DJ Turner to make it 27-20. It was not enough at 2:03. The Raiders lose their fourth straight game.

#5 The Raiders head to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals. The Bengals have won two out of their last three games. The Bengals lost their seventh game Sunday (3-5) to the Philadelphia Eagles 37-17. With that in mind is there a chance the Raiders can bounce back and win this game in Cincinnati next Sunday?
