SALT LAKE CITY–Utah loses 5-3 in back-to-back games as home struggles persist.

The Utah Hockey Club welcomed the New York Rangers to Delta Center on Thursday night for their second matchup of the season. Utah previously defeated the Rangers in New York 6-5 in overtime last October.

Mattias Maccelli lit the lamp just 61 seconds into the game for his 6th of the season, assisted by Barrett Hayton and Ian Cole, to give Utah the early lead. Artemi Panarin netted his 18th of the season just a couple of minutes later to tie things up for the Rangers, assisted by Alexis Lafreniere. At 8:12 of the first it was Maccelli again, crashing the net to knock in a rebound for his 7th goal, assisted by Barrett Hayton and Mikhail Sergachev, to put Utah up 2-1. With just a few minutes remaining in the opening frame, New York forward Arthur Kaliyev evened things up again at 2-2 with his first goal in a Rangers uniform since coming to the Empire State from the Kings.

Utah opened the second period on the power play, courtesy of a high-sticking penalty to Arthur Kaliyev late in the first. Less than a minute into the period, Logan Cooley one-timed a perfect pass from captain Clayton Keller for his 13th goal of the season with the additional assist going to Nick Schmaltz, giving Utah its third one-goal lead of the game. New York threatened to even things up once again during a 74-second 5-on-3 power play, but goatender Karel Vejmelka and his defense held the Rangers off and finished the period holding on to a 3-2 edge.

A cross-checking penalty to Alexis Lafrenière at the end of the second period gave Utah another opportunity to begin a new period on the power play. This time, however, it was New York converting a short-handed goal by Reilly Smith to tie things up once again at 3-3. Midway through the frame, the Rangers gave Utah fans another case of déjà vu all over again when Chris Kreider put New York up 4-3 with his 14th goal of the season, assisted by Sam Carrick. With Vejmelka pulled for an extra attacker, Artemi Panarin scored his 19th of the season into an empty net to put the game away 5-3.

The loss is Utah’s 7th of their last 8 at home where they have won just 6 out of 21 games this season.

After the game, Utah Hockey Club head coach André Tourigny said, “I think that we did a lot of good things, to be honest. I’m disappointed; it’s another loss by one shot. I think that we played really good again in the first half of the game. I didn’t mind the way we played in the second half–don’t get me wrong. Against Montreal, I didn’t like some stuff…Same thing against the Islanders. Not tonight. I think we played hard. The way they scored their two goals in the third period–those things will happen, but I think we deserved better tonight.” When asked about not letting frustration boil over, Tourigny responded, “It does boil. That’s why I’m proud of the guys today–because we approached that game with an unbelievable mindset. They were tuned in, their body language was good, they were positive, they were picking up each other, we worked hard. I said before (that) the other team is a factor in the game. That’s a good team. At some point, whatever or how good you play, they will make good plays. The puck will bounce over your stick…something will happen. They will have good times on the other side. Even in those moments, we battled hard (and) we played well. A broken stick in our zone; there was no panic, we defended well, we kept them on the outside (and) they could not get anything going. I loved the approach. I loved the resilience of the guys. I loved the fight. I’m so disappointed for the players first, for everybody, for the team. But it’s frustrating to see not getting (rewarded) for playing well.”

Utah returns to the ice for their sixth game of the homestand on Saturday at 7:00pm against the St. Louis Blues. Utah won their previous matchup 4-2 in St. Louis in November.

G League Action: Kings get revenge score 38 points in 4th quarter to defeat Stars 120-111

After a disappointing loss to the Salt Lake City Stars on Tuesday, the Stockton Kings had revenge on their mind as they returned to the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah.

The Kings got out to an early 27-19 lead in the first quarter, and maintained it through the second. Salt Lake City had a high-scoring third quarter which put them in the lead heading into the final frame with the opportunity to sweep the back-to-back between the two teams. An explosive 38 points in the final quarter shot Stockton back into the lead, and they’d walk away with a 120-111 win.

The difference was ultimately the Kings’ ability to have multiple offensive options. They had five players score 17 or more points, led by an unlikely hero, Antoine Davis who finished the night with 20 points. Strong contributions from Skal Labissiere, Terry Taylor, Isaiah Crawford and Dexter Dennis helped the Kings get back to their winning ways.

Davis had a phenomenal night from beyond the arc, as he went 6-10 from three-point range.

Mason Jones struggled a bit shooting 4-11 on the night, but as one of Stockton’s top performers this season they’ll certainly hope to see him back to his normal level of play next time out.

Meanwhile for the Stars, Taevion Kinsey and Justin Lewis not only led the team in points but were very efficient with their shot selection. Kinsey finished with 28 points, going 12-16 from the field while Lewis went 8-11, ending up with a total of 23 points. If Dereon Seabron was able to hit a few more of his shots for Salt Lake City, it could’ve been a much different story. He was 4-15 in general, but went 0-4 from three-point range.

Rebounds also went firmly in Stockton’s favor, as they ended the night leading 46-34 in that regard. Jon Elmore had a strong night defensively, leading both teams in steals with three on the night.

It was a big win for Stockton, as they solidified their position in the standings. They’re currently second in the Western Conference, and they’re quickly establishing themselves as a major contender in the G-League.

The Kings’ next match up will be a massively important one, as they’ll face the leaders of the Western Conference, the Santa Cruz Warriors on the road. The Warriors have spent their entire season on the road so far, so Stockton will have added pressure as Santa Cruz will certainly want to put on a show for their home fans in their home opener

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips:

#1 Morris the Duke Blue Devils (14-4) made easy work of the Cal Bears (16-3) with a 72-38 win. The contest was not even close and the Bears didn’t get much offense was it a matter of the Bears shot was off or was it that the Blue Devils defense just was in command all night?

#2 Duke’s Toby Fournier was a scoring machine leading with 23 points and she did it all coming off the bench.

#3 Cal tried hard as they may to try and shut down Duke’s Ashlon Jackson who finished second in scoring with 16 and Reigan Richardson with third with 14.

#4 Cal’s scoring was not their previous games nobody finished in double figures. The top three scorers were Kayla Williams with eight, Ugonne Onyiah and Natalia Ackerman both with six. It just seem on one could get past that intimidating Duke defense.

#5 Cal will try it all over again against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (7-10) on Sunday with an 11:00AM PST tip. Wake Forest are coming off a tough loss to the Stanford Cardinal 74-71 tonight. Wake Forest are last in the ACC and have lost five in a row. Cal is coming in none too happy after the loss to Duke so Wake Forest will no doubt have their work cut out for them.

Utah HC Squanders Strong Start In 5-3 Loss To Canadiens

SALT LAKE CITY–Utah’s home woes continue as 2-1 first period lead dissolves into 5-3 deficit against Montreal.

In the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy clicks the heels of her ruby slippers three times while repeating the words, “There’s no place like home,” to be magically transported back to her family and loved ones in Kansas. For the Utah Hockey Club this season, they may prefer to click the heels of their skates while saying, “There’s no place like the road.”

For the first period of Tuesday night’s matchup against the Montreal Canadiens, Utah was clicking on all cylinders, taking an early lead on goals by recently recalled forward Josh Doan, a 5-on-3 power play goal, and center Nick Bjugstad. Utah overpowered the Canadiens on every front, outshooting Montreal 14-3 while finishing the opening frame with a 2-1 lead.

The second period was all Canadiens on the score sheet, as Patrick Laine and Kirby Dach each lit the lamp to give Montreal a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period of play.

Just three minutes into the third period, Utah center Logan Cooley energized the Delta Center with his 12th goal of the season, assisted by Nick Schmaltz and captain Clayton Keller to even things up at 3-3.

Canadiens winger Cole Caufield recaptured the lead for Montreal a few minutes later with his 24th goal of the season, but Utah continued to apply pressure to keep the game within reach.

Unfortunately for Utah, the struggles at home continued as Kirby Dach put the game away with his second goal of the night with just a few minutes remaining, for a final score of 5-3.

This was Utah’s 6th home loss over their past 7 games in Salt Lake City where they have won just 6 of 20 games so far this season as opposed to winning 12 of 23 on the road.

Defenseman John Marino, who was plus-one in the contest, made his Utah debut in his first game returning from injury. After the game, Marino talked about his first game in a Utah sweater. “Took a couple of shifts to get your legs under you and the rhythm and flow of the game with all the penalties and stuff, taking shifts off, but anything to step in the right direction.” Marino also addressed the challenge of finding chemistry with his new teammates. “It’s tough, missing out on training camp and everything. But you’re able to come in, have a couple of practices with everyone, be around the group as much as you can. (The) staff and organization, everyone in the room has been great helping me, so it’s just a learning process.”

Head coach André Tourigny gave his take on the game. “It’s frustrating. I think we played a really good first period, really good start. I liked our cohesion offensively in the first period. I didn’t like our second period, starting with getting in the box. When we came back from New Years, we talked about management of the second period, and we had, as a team, we struggled in the second period, and then the following three games we were excellent in the second period. We played our game the right way. We had the right mindset. When I say played our game the right way, we played more precise. We played really fast. And the opponent, we did not allow them to change. We were intense without the puck, so we didn’t have time and space, so we were able to get the energy on our side all the time, we had shot volume, and so on and so forth. Today we arrived in the second period, and we were so good in the first. I don’t know for which reason we thought the second period will not be a fight or whatever, I don’t know. Start getting the pucks right from the beginning, that confident rhythm. Even in the first, you know, they were going out there on the other side, there’s a few guys who had a tough time to get their rhythm, because it’s tough to get on the rhythm on your ice time and your next shift. So, long story short, it built up in the second period, and instead to recover, we got worse. And that was the game.”

Tourigny didn’t pull punches talking about the second period. “There’s no reason to have excuses. We had a great first period; you need to show up in the second. You know on the other side that they will push. They’re one of the best teams in the NHL in the last 12 games or so. They have two or three losses in their last 12 games. What do you expect? For 60 minutes, roll them over and they won’t push back? No, they will push back. You get three or four power plays in the first period, a 5-on-3. It’s time for all of us, coaches and players, to take our responsibility. We need to be better than that. That’s what I think.”

Utah hopes to reverse their home fortunes on Thursday at 7:00pm MST when they play host to the New York Rangers.

SJSU hands New Mexico their first conference loss in 71-70 win

SAN JOSE- In a game full of short leads, San Jose State extends their win streak to 2 and gives the New Mexico Lobos their first conference loss of the season.

Coming into tonight’s game, HC Tim Miles knew it was going to be a good matchup given the knowledge of the team and what they can bring to the table. “Excellent night for San Jose State, beat a high high quality opponent in a game where we weren’t at our best early.”

In quite a physical game by both sides, San Jose came out on top. Both teams had fouls in the double digits, New Mexico with 14 and San Jose with 15. “Yeah they were a physical team, but we just executed and did what we did and just played our game” said Latrell Davis.

Latrell Davis made two important shots that heavily contributed to the Spartans win tonight. He had a buzzer beater three to end the first half and a late layup in the second to put the Spartans ahead. “I thought I missed it but it went in and I was like yes!” said Latrell Davis. Davis put up 11 points with 2 assists.

Jermaine Washington had a great game tonight on both sides, defensively and offensively. Washington put up 13 points, making three 3’s, with a plus 18. Being only a freshman, this game was a step in the right direction for him “Just seeing him be able to play both sides of the floor, really exciting for him and I think he’s going to be a hell of a player next year.” said teammate Josh Uduje.

A win like this is crucial for San Jose State. Before tonight’s game, they struggled to close out and win those close games but they proved that they’re capable of it. “It’s so important for them to keep their enthusiasm up, right? Every game has been tough.” said HC Tim Miles.

The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday January 18th when they will travel to Nevada to take on the Wolfpack.

G League action: Stars slip by Kings in narrow win 121-117 at the Maverik Center

The Stockton Kings were back on the road on Tuesday night, as they visited the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah to take on the Salt Lake City Stars.

Starting the night, the Kings found themselves first in the Western Conference. They were hoping to continue building off of their 6-1 start to the season, while the Stars were looking to move above .500. Ultimately, the Stars would be on the winning end of things as they’d narrowly win, 121-117.

Stockton got off to an early lead, ending the first quarter up 26-22, however Salt Lake City bounced back with a strong second quarter. They dropped 37 points in the second frame, making it a 59-54 lead for the home team at halftime.

The second half would mirror the first. The Kings had a strong third quarter and after scoring 33 points in the third, they held a lead going into the final frame. They’d be unable to contain the Stars’ offense in the fourth quarter though, and Salt Lake City would walk away with a 121-117 win.

Mason Jones had a great individual performance for Stockton, scoring 30 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Terry Taylor also had a strong night, going 22/5/5 for the Kings.

Chasson Randle was +17 on the night, meaning he was having a massively positive impact for the Kings, as they weren’t giving up many baskets with him on the floor.

Salt Lake City had two standouts on the night, with Oscar Tshiebwe scoring 30 and grabbing 22 boards while Elijah Harkless dropped 29 points. The most impressive thing for Tahiebwe was the fact that 10 of his rebounds were offensive, generating more offense for his team which ultimately became the difference between a win and a loss.

Despite Tahiebwe’s spectacular performance on the glass, his teammates didn’t help him out much and the Stars finished with just two more rebounds than the Kings.

Due to the loss, the Kings will now trail the Santa Cruz Warriors at the top of the West. They’ll look to get revenge on Thursday, when they visit the Stars once again. After that, the Kings will have one of their most important games of the season as they’ll visit the team at the top of the conference, Santa Cruz.

Kings Winning Streak Comes to an End at the Hands of the Milwaukee Bucks Losing 130-115

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers (right) points out instructions as Giannis Antetokounmpo (left) stands by in the first half against the Sacramento Kings at Fiserv Arena in Milwaukee on Tue Jan 14, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

The Milwaukee Bucks (20-17) controlled the opening quarter leading the Sacramento Kings(20-19) 47-26 after the first 12 minutes of play in tonight’s matchup. The Kings were able to match the Bucks in the second and third quarters but could not get on top of Milwaukee playing from behind all night.

The Kings cut a 28 point deficit to 11 in the fourth quarter but that was as close as they would get. There would be no eighth win in a row for Sacramento. The final was 130-115 in favor of the Bucks.

Game recap: The first quarter was not the start that the Kings were looking for. The first six minutes of the first quarter was a close one but then the Bucks began to make a move extending a slim lead into a monster lead.

After the first 12 minutes of play, the Bucks had established a 47-26 lead. It was a huge lead for Milwaukee as they were leaving the Kings in the dust and Sacramento was being manhandled at every turn offensively and defensively.

The Kings started the second quarter going shot for shot with the Bucks but with 21 points to make up, shot for shot was not the answer. Mid-way through the quarter, not a single King had double digits. They were faced with a huge mountain to climb.

With a little under five minutes left in the first half, DeMar DeRozan was the first King to reach a double digit tally. The Bucks owned the paint shooting around 55% to the Kings 39%. At the half, the Bucks were cruising leading 75-54.

Milwaukee had led by as much as 28 points but the Kings cut it by as much as 12 points trailing 46-62 with 2:41 left in the half. The Bucks pushed their lead back out to 75-54 as the second quarter came to an end. The second quarter was a tie with each team scoring 28 points. Sacramento had matched the Bucks but had made absolutely no ground.

Milwaukee had controlled the paint through the two opening quarters scoring 34 points to the Kings 18. Both teams committed only four turnovers apiece so good ball protection on both sides. The poor second half of the first quarter was a killer for Sacramento.

They were not able to recover at all in the second quarter. They kept pace with Milwaukee but could not get on top of them. By the half the Kings had Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox and DeRozan all with double digits. The Bucks also had three starters with double figures; Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the charge with 19 points. The Sacramento Kings had a lot of work to do in the second half.

The Kings outscored the Bucks in the third quarter but only by a single point 28-27 and going into the fourth quarter, Milwaukee had a 102-82 lead. A win for Sacramento in this game was a long shot at best. An eighth win in a row was not looking very good for the Kings.

The fourth quarter got underway and at 9:42 the Kings trailed by 13 points making a bit of a run 91-104. The Sacramento run continued as the Kings pulled to within 11 points trailing 96-107 with a lot of game left.

That would be as close as Sacramento would get. They couldn’t make the stops, and they couldn’t make the shots when they needed them. The offensive excellence of the Bucks Tuesday night overwhelmed the Kings. Once again the Kings bench was quiet finishing with 17 points while the Milwaukee bench hit 41 points. The final for this game was 130-115 in favor of the Bucks.

Every starter for the Kings shot double figures with DeRozan leading the pack shooting for 28 points and six rebounds. Fox finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, a double double. Sabonis also had a double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Keon Ellis had 18 points and Keegan Murray shot for 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Game notes: Tuesday night the Kings took on the Bucks looking for their eighth win in a row but it was too much Giannis scoring 33 points and the Kings ended their seven game win streak. The Kings were faced with containing Antetokounmpo and Damien Lilliard a monster task.

Sacramento had most of their starting roster ready to roll in this game as they finish up this road trip. Malik Monk unfortunately did not play in Tuesday night’s game. He is dealing with a groin injury and is listed as day-to-day. The Kings will really missed him in this tough matchup. They tried to finish up this final game with a win and get a spotless road trip but it wasn’t to be.

The Kings will now return home to Golden 1 Center for a matchup with the Houston Rockets on Thursday looking to start another win streak. This will be another tough assignment for the team but they are fully capable of coming out on top. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Does season ticket sell outs signal success in Sacramento for A’s or just a honeymoon?; AI says Clemente most popular Hispanic player of all time; plus more news

Lawrence Butler of the Athletics conducts an interview at the Sawyer Hotel in downtown Sacramento on Mon Jan 6, 2025 regarding the A’s upcoming 2025 season in Sacramento (still from ABC 10 KXTV Sacramento)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Athletics selling out season tickets at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento does that signal that this relocation by the A’s was a successful idea or this is just a honeymoon in Sacramento and the A’s will eventually struggle in the standing like they had in past seasons?

#2 According to AI the most popular MLB Hispanic player of all time is former Pittsburgh Pirate Roberto Clemente who began his career in 1955 and in his second year in 1956 hit .311. After 1956 he hit above .300 in seven different seasons. He was defined as a pure hitter who drove in runs as well as being able to scores runs as well.

#3 According insiders three MLB teams were taken off Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki’s desired list the New York Yankees and Mets and the Texas Rangers. Sources are saying that Sasaki is down to three clubs the Toronto Blue Jays, the Los Angeles Dodgers, or the San Diego Padres. The San Francisco Giants have backed out of pursuing Sasaki. Sasaki is under 25 years old and is classified as a amateur and his salary will be limited from $5.1 million to $7.5 million per year. He will be regarded as a rookie phenom and could conger up endorsements that could add more to his finances depending how he performs in his MLB debut.

#4 Sasaki is another big signing possibility that has passed up the Giants. The Giants over the last two seasons missed signing in 2024 the likes of Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, and Shohei Ohtani. For 2025 the Giants so far have missed out on the following free agent signings Juan Soto, Ha Seong Kim, and Corbin Burnes. They managed to sign Willy Adames and Justin Verlander. The Giants last Thursday avoided going to arbitration with LaMonte Wade Jr, and relivers Camilo Doval and Tyler Rogers. Are there a number of big name free agents avoiding San Francisco for specific reasons based on how the team has been a revolving door for managers, general managers, and team president changes and how CEO Larry Baer and team managing partner Greg Johnson who have final say have not been able to sign high profile players?

#5 The Seattle Mariners agreed to a one year deal with infielder Donovan Solano for $3.5 million. Also Solano could earn up to $1 million for plate appearances that ramp up to $200,00 for at bats totaling 300, 350, 400, 450, and 500. Solano hit .286, eight home runs, and 35 RBIs in 96 games with the San Diego Padres.
