Utah HC Fights Back From 3-0 Deficit But Falls To Toronto 4-3 In Shootout

SALT LAKE CITY–Carcone, Schmaltz, and Hayton each lit the lamp in the second period to tie the score at 3-3, but Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll outdueled Karel Vejmelka in the shootout to give Toronto the 4-3 win at the Delta Center.

The Utah Hockey Club returned home Monday night after splitting a two-game road trip where they defeated the Detroit Red Wings and lost in overtime to the Chicago Blackhawks. The NHL trade deadline came and went during their absence without any significant trades being made, however several pending free agents signed contract extensions: defenseman Ian Cole and forward Alex Kerfoot for one year, defenseman Olli Määttä for three years, and the current #1 goaltender Karel Vejmelka for five years. On Sunday, Utah announced that Vejmelka’s netminding counterpart, Connor Ingram, had re-entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program and will be unavailable for the foreseeable future.

With Josh Doan in the penalty box for tripping against William Nylander, Toronto struck first at 12:42 of the opening frame when a snap shot by Nylander deflected off the stick of Utah defenseman Mikhail Sergachev and into the top right corner of the net.

Nylander’s 36th goal of the season was assisted by Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies. As the period wound down, Ian Cole went to the sin bin for high-sticking against Bobby McMann and with 22 seconds remaining Calle Jarnkrok gave the Maple Leafs a 2-0 lead with their second power play goal of the night, Jarnkrok’s first of the season, assisted by Max Domi and Morgan Rielly.

At 4:48 of the second period, Toronto defenseman Simon Benoit ripped a shot from the blue line which found the back of the net for his first goal of the season, assisted by David Kampf and Pontus Holmberg, to give the Maple Leafs a 3-0 lead.

When play resumed, Benoit and Kesselring dropped the gloves with the Utah defender hoping to fire up his team. It worked. Over the next seven minutes and 23 seconds Utah would come all the way back from their early hole.

Forward Michael Carcone got things going for the home team at 8:14 with his sixth goal of the season, tipping in a sweet pass from Josh Doan in front of the net with the additional assist going to Jack McBain. 49 seconds later, forward Nick Schmaltz would tip in a perfect pass from Olli Määttä for his 15th of the season, with the additional assist by captain Clayton Keller.

Just past the halfway mark of the period, Benoit went to the box again for tripping against McBain, setting the table for Utah forward Barrett Hayton to even the score 3-3 on the power play with his 17th of the season, a deflected shot by Mikhail Sergachev at the blue line, with Dylan Guenther picking up the additional assist.

Joseph Woll and Karel Vejmelka each held their opponents at bay for the remainder of the second period and all of the third period and overtime. Austen Matthews gave Toronto the first lead of the shootout, but Clayton Keller immediately evened things up with a backhand shot. Mitch Marner put the game away for the Maple Leafs with a wrist shot to give his squad the victory.

In the locker room, Utah defenseman Michael Kesselring talked about the second period comeback. “Honestly, we’re a resilient group. We fought back against a really, really good team. I thought we outplayed them. We deserved a little bit better, so it was a good effort, and we should build on that.”

What did the team do differently after the first period? “I think we played low/high more and got more pucks to the net. I know it’s a cliche, but we just kind of grind them down a little bit. Obviously, their top players are really high end, so you have to try to make them defend, so they have to change when they go up the ice. I thought we did a pretty good job of that.”

Captain Clayton Keller also addressed the second period surge. “Even early on in the game, we felt good about our game. They got two power play goals and I think as the game went on, we got better. Our guys stepped up in big moments and [Kesselring] got us going there with the fight which was awesome for us and really elevated us. We scored two quick goals and it sucks to not get the two points tonight, but everyone dug in tonight. We stayed together no matter what was going on. It was a lot of back and forth, just a lot going on. I’m proud of the guys the way we fought until the end.”

Head coach André Tourigny began his post-game comments by remarking, “That was a hell of a character game for us. The way things unfold, I’m really proud of the way the guys fought back, the resiliency, and all of that. I talked this morning about us being hard on the inside and winning battles and I think we were really disciplined in our approach and playing against their tough players. I’m really proud of the efforts.” Tourigny was particularly pleased with the momentum shift from Kesselring’s fight. “Unreal. We talked in the beginning of the season on our team managing the game and learning. That moment of the game, the emotion of the situation, their third goal, the fight, and the way the guys were talking on the bench, they had the right message on discipline and being resilient and staying engaged and staying with it. It was unreal. That’s kudos to the guys. They were unbelievable and we know how important it is. We need points and stuff like that and there’s a level of frustration we didn’t get, but there’s a huge level of pride on the character we showed and how we managed our emotions and how we managed the game in those tough situations. … The whole day for me is positive. We’re missing one point and that’s the only thing we can complain about. The rest is unreal. That’s a good team. On five-on-five, we probably doubled them in scoring chances and we came back from a three goal deficit. We fought, we hit, and we fed on the energy of our crowd. That’s a great day.”

Utah Hockey Club will play host to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday and then hit the road for three games against Seattle, Vancouver, and Edmonton before returning March 20 against the Buffalo Sabres.

#1 Saturday the San Jose Barracuda’s (29-30-4-3) Colin White scored twice but couldn’t get San Jose to seal the deal against the Abbotsford Canucks (29-23-2-1) in a game that resulted in a 5-4 loss at Abbotsford Centre.

#2 It was a tough loss for the Barracuda as they attacked early scoring the first two goals of the game with Jimmy Schuudlt and Pavol Regenda to open the game with a 2-0 lead after the first period.

#3 The Canucks in the second period started to make a move scoring two. The Canucks Max Sasson scored at 1:19, the Barracuda’s Colin White would answer back with a goal at 5:27, and the Canucks cut the Barracuda lead to 3-2 when Danila Klimovich scored at 9:06 to end the second period.

#4 Third period the Tristen Nielsen scored at 3:52 to tie up it up 3-3 for the Canucks. White would score again for the Barracuda to take a brief lead again at 4-3 at 5:27. Then there’s Linus Karlsson who tied the game up once again 4-4 at 17:22. The game went into overtime and Karlsson struck again scoring his second goal of the game for the game winner at 3:09 in a 5-4 Canucks win.

#5 It’s off to Tucson on Sat Mar 15 at 7:00pm PDT and the Tucson Roadrunners 27-23-3-2 seventh in the Pacific Division. The Barracuda are catching the Roadrunners during a hot spell who have won six of their last ten games. The Barracuda have won four of their last ten games and are fifth in the Pacific at 29-20-4-3. Sacramento Kings podcast Barbara Mason: Kings host Knicks tonight; Sacramento returns from LA playing on back to back nights

#1 Los Angeles Clippers Kawhi Leonard hit a buzzer beater shot on a hook shook that beat the Sacramento Kings 111-110 in a nail biter on Sunday night in Inglewood in the battle of eighth place teams.

#2 Leonard’s shot took him to the top of the key with 21.6 seconds and let the clock run down and drove the by past the Kings defenders for a shot that bounced on the rim that went in. Leonard scored 17 points.

#3 The Kings had a tough time defending the Clippers James Harden who scored 29 points and the Clippers wound up winning their third straight game. Ivica Zubac hand a hot had for the Clippers scoring 22 points while grabbing 14 rebounds.

#4 DeMar DeRozan scored 31 points with ten assists, Zach LaVine had 30 points in spite of their hard efforts the Kings lost by just one point in the end of the game. The Kings continue to be winless against the Clippers with a season 0-3 record.

#5 The Eastern Conference third place New York Knicks come calling tonight at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. The Knicks have lost their last three games and are 19-12 on the road this season. The Knicks are struggling can the Kings get this won tonight with the home court advantage?

NBA G League: Time runs out on Kings as Clippers win it 126-113

STOCKTON–Straight off of their win against the San Diego Clippers Saturday night, the Stockton Kings hosted their California rivals in a matinee matchup on Sunday afternoon. With daylight savings time taking effect and less than 24 hours between games, it seemed clear that both teams would be battling fatigue and either side could walk away victorious. The Clippers walked away with a 126-113 win over the Kings.

Once again, the visiting team got out to an early lead. In the first quarter, San Diego outscored the Kings for the second night in a row, leading 31-27 after the first 12 minutes. The second period was exactly the same, once again the Clippers outscored Stockton 31-27, extending their lead to 62-54 heading into the halftime break.

For the third quarter in a row, the Clippers held the Kings to 27 points in the third frame but scored one more point than they had in the first two quarters, outscoring Stockton 32-27 this time. Heading into the final quarter, the Clippers had a solid 94-81 lead and they only needed to hold on for 12 more minutes to split the series in Stockton.

The Clippers were consistent throughout the night, as they scored 32 points once again in the fourth quarter, bringing their point total up to 126 at the final whistle. The Kings had a better offensive showing in the final frame, scoring 32 of their own and matching San Diego for the only time of the night. It was too little too late though, as the visiting team walked away victorious with a final score of 126-113.

The winning team, San Diego, were led in scoring by Trentyn Flowers who dropped 23 points. It was a strong all-around offensive effort though, as the Clippers had seven players with 14 or more points on the night. Yauhen Massalski’s 10 offensive rebounds helped get some critical second-chance points, and were a big part of the Clippers’ win as well.

Terry Taylor had an impressive outing for the Kings despite it coming in a losing effort. The former Chicago Bull scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds of his own, mostly on the defensive end of the court. Jon Elmore also eclipsed the 20-point mark, getting 25 points on the night.

After splitting the series, the Kings will be heading back on the road as they’ll be going to Birmingham for their next game later this week.

Kings Fall to Clippers in Overtime Heartbreaker, 111-110

INGLEWOOD CA — The Kings had been moving with a different aura recently. Sacramento was displaying a confidence that I felt had been lacking for much of the season. On Sunday night, the Kings were back in action in Los Angeles against the Clippers, carrying what felt like a sense of belonging in the crowded Western Conference playoff race.

The message of “playing with joy,” which Doug Christie had preached since taking over head coaching duties, seemed to be taking hold. Heading into Sunday’s matchup, the Kings had won five of their last six games and were looking to build on that momentum before heading back home. The Kings and Clippers tipped off at 6:30 PM PST at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The Clippers defeated the Kings 111-110 in overtime.

In the first quarter, neither the Kings nor the Clippers found much offensive rhythm, as both teams played solid defense. However, Zach LaVine started the game hot, scoring nine points in the opening quarter to lead all scorers. The Clippers’ Ivica Zubac established himself early in the paint, leading his team with eight first-quarter points. The Kings outscored the Clippers 23-20 in the opening period, taking a narrow lead.

The second quarter remained highly competitive. The Kings briefly built an eight-point advantage, but the Clippers fought back to erase the deficit before halftime. The Clippers outscored the Kings 31-26 in the quarter, taking a 51-49 lead into the break.

Both teams played disciplined basketball in the first half, with Sacramento committing only four turnovers and Los Angeles just three. Zach LaVine led the Kings with 13 first-half points, while James Harden paced the Clippers with 11.

In the third quarter, the Kings reclaimed a slim lead. They outscored the Clippers 26-21 in the period, heading into the final frame with a 75-72 advantage. Defensive intensity remained high, as neither team was interested in letting up. 

The fourth quarter felt like a battle of defensive resilience—whichever team blinked first would likely lose. However, neither side backed down, and the game remained tied at 97, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, the Kings suffered a heartbreaking defeat on a left-handed hook shot by Kawhi Leonard. The ball bounced around the rim before improbably falling through the net, sending Intuit Dome into a frenzy as the Clippers secured the 111-110 victory. DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine led the Kings in defeat, scoring 31 and 30 points, respectively. James Harden delivered the Clippers’ best performance with 29 points.

This marked the Kings’ second loss in three games where they had played well throughout but fell short late. They suffered a similar defeat against Denver last week. After the game, head coach Doug Christie praised his team’s effort, saying, “I thought the guys did a good job… all in all, the byproduct of playing hard like this is ultimately going to be winning. Super proud of how the guys continue to build. We want to win every game, so this sucks and it hurts… but defensively, I think it was a fantastic effort out there.”

Keon Ellis shared his thoughts on the team’s progress following the trade deadline, stating, “We know that we are trending in the right direction… just gotta keep at it day by day.”

With the loss, the Kings fell to 33-30 on the season and now sit 1.5 games behind the Clippers for the eighth seed in the Western Conference. They currently hold the ninth seed, two games ahead of the Dallas Mavericks.

Up Next: The Kings return home to face the New York Knicks on Monday at 7:30 PM PST at Golden 1 Center. It will mark the second night of a road-home back-to-back.

NBA G League: Warriors end 5-game losing streak, by storming the Capitanes 118-107, inside parent Chase Center

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Santa Cruz Warriors (13-12) halted their winless streak (5) after subduing the Mexico City Capitanes (11-14) 118-107 on a Sunday afternoon in the City by the Bay

The Warriors played comfortably in the home arena of their major league namesake, while playing host to the guest from the capital city of our bordering nation to the south, Mexico.

The Capitanes got the fiesta started, by scoring the initial points on the game, on a hook shot by guard David Jones Garcia.The Warriors went on a 8-0 run to get their bearings in their temporary home, a little more than 75 miles north of KPA.

SCW led by as many as 8 points in the first quarter, but settled for a one-point lead (21-20) after the first quadrant. There were two ties and the guests also led twice.

The Warriors extended that one-point lead to a 13-point margin during the second quarter. The feisty team from Mexico chipped away at that double-digit deficit and narrowed it to five, by halftime, 61-56. Five players on both teams reached double-figures at recess.

Pat Spencer (10), Javan Johnson (12) and Braxton Key (11) all led SCW through the first half. David Jones led the Capitanes with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while Greg Brown III contributed 15 points.

In the third quarter, the Warriors had leads of nine and 13 at different points of the stanza. However, Mexico City stormed back and actually led (73-71) at the midway point of the period. Shortly thereafter, the home team opened up the lead again, being up by 11 points (89-78) after 36 minutes of game play.

In the final quarter, a couple of fan favorites were putting up numbers. Trayce Jackson-Davis was sent to the G-League on assignment from his Golden State Warriors roster. He gave SCW 22 points and 8 rebounds.

The other player to get a hefty applause, was former Warrior and proud Mexican-American Juan Toscano-Anderson. He represented Mexico as a member of the Capitanes, the Warriors, for playing in the friendly confines of Chase again, and the Bay , for returning to his roots and hometown area. He messed around and got a Triple-Double (22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists) for his peeps and faithful fans.

The Warriors produced their largest lead (16) in the fourth quarter, and managed to end the game with a double-digits advantage (118-107) at the final buzzer. Four other teammates joined the double-figures brigade. Pat Spence put up 25 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Braxton Key helped with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Blake Hinson (17) and Taran Armstrong (10) gifted their tallies.

In addition to JTA’s triple-double, three other players reached the 10+ points plateau. David Jones had a game-high 33 points and 12 rebounds. Greg Brown III scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, while Dink Pate chipped in 14 points.

The Warriors are next in action Wednesday, March 12 in Florida to take the Osceola Magic at 7:00 PM ET/4 PM PT. The Capitanes head back south across the border to host the Austin Spurs on Tuesday March 11, TBA.

#1 New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole who has a sore elbow had imaging done on his right elbow and the Yankees expect to know more about his elbow in two more days. Cole 34, pitched on Thursday against the Minnesota Twins and was lit up for six runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Cole said in the post game presser he felt alright but the elbow was sore after the game.

#2 The Detroit Tigers signed right hand pitcher Jose Urquidy that includes a one year option for 2026 to a $1 million one year deal. Urquidy is 30 and had Tommy John surgery back on Jun 5th. Urquidy also had his first Tommy John in 2017. Urquidy was placed on the 60 day IL and it’s a question on when he will return. Urquidy last pitched in 2023 and went 3-3 with a 5.29 ERA.

#3 One of the scary things about spring training is that one of your highest paid players could down with an injury and miss significant time. The Atlanta Braves Jurickson Profar is hoping that won’t be the case he had to leave Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after jamming his left wrist when he landed on his left arm. X-rays proved negative and the Braves said Profar will go further testing.

#4 Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr said that his contract proposal was significantly lower than New York Mets Juan Soto and was less than $600 million. Guerrero said that he and the Blue Jays failed to secure an extended contract before the start of spring training. Guerrero is eligible to enter the free agency market this November. Guerrero is in his last season of his contract with the Jays.

#5 Two Major League teams two minor league parks. How much of a mistake is this on the decision of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to allow this to happen or did Manfred do the right thing with no choice but to have the Sacramento A’s and the Tampa Bay Rays play in minor league parks for the interim?

NBA G League: Kings roll out on Clippers 123-105 at Adventist Health

STOCKTON–The Stockton Kings hosted the San Diego Clippers on Saturday night at AdventistHealth Arena. The Kings took care of business with a 123-105 win.

The Clippers got out to an early lead, and actually got out to a double-digit lead following an impressive offensive performance in the first quarter. After 12 minutes, the visitors led Stockton 39-28. The Kings didn’t wait long to bounce back though, as they were able to contain the Clippers in the second period and hold them to just 17 points. After scoring 26 of their own, Stockton had brought it back to a two-point game heading into the half. They trailed 56-54 after 24 minutes, and the game was once again within reach for the Kings.

Not only was the game within reach for Stockton, but in the third quarter they were able to pull out to a lead of their own, albeit a small one. The Kings led 91-89 after three quarters and now had victory in their sights if they could close out the fourth quarter.

Stockton was able to do just that, once again shutting down the Clippers’ offense in the fourth quarter. San Diego was limited to just 16 points in the final frame, while the Kings were able to put 32 on the scoreboard. As a result, the Kings walked away with a win, with the final score being 123-105 in favor of the home side.

Mason Jones, Terry Taylor, and Jon Elmore all dropped 20+ points. Jones led the team with 29, but Taylor wasn’t far behind with 27 of his own. Jones’ dominance offensively wasn’t just limited to his own scoring though. He also had 15 assists on the night and was critical in helping his teammates get open. He also completed the triple-double by grabbing ten rebounds. It was a phenomenal night for Jones, who was undoubtedly a key part of the Kings’ win.

Meanwhile, San Diego were led by Patrick Baldwin Jr and Jalen Adaway who had 24 and 20 points respectively.

The Kings and Clippers will have a rematch Sunday afternoon, as the Kings look to sweep the back-to-back and the Clippers will be hoping for immediate revenge.

Yaboah’s lone goal enough as Minnesota United shutout Earthquakes 1-0

SAN JOSE —Kelvin Yaboah has been all of the offense for Minnesota United FC.

His lone goal in the first half proved to be the winner as United shutout the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 on Saturday evening at Pay Pal Park.

San Jose has lost for the first time this season after starting the season 2-0. They attempted to make franchise history by starting the season with consecutive wins in MLS play. It was Deja vu for Minnesota United as they won for a second consecutive week by a score of 1-0.

“[Minnesota United FC] defended very well. They dealt with a lot of crosses quite well. We obviously made a mistake on the goal, not clearing the ball properly, and not doing a good job stepping to the player who finished. I don’t even know who finished the goal, but bad defending on our part on that particular play, I’m not concerned about a couple of chances they got at the end of the game, because we were very exposed trying to get the goal. We opened ourselves up. We were well aware that was going to happen. I give our keeper [Daniel] credit. He made a lot of good saves,” Quakes head coach Bruce Arena said.

Minnesota United (2-1-0) drew first blood in the 33rd minute. A failed clearing attempt out of the box by San Jose led to Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi collecting the ball out of the air. Oluwaseyi found Michael Boxall inside the box on the right side. Boxall quickly passed it over to Kelvin Yeboah who beat Quakes goalkeeper Daniel with a shot to far corner for his second goal of the season. Yaboah has scored both of Minnesota United’s goals this season.

San Jose (2-1-0) had pressure inside Minnesota United’s zone early in the first ten minutes of the opening 45 minutes. Their best scoring chance came in the 29th minute when Jamar Ricketts centered a ball into the box for a Josef Martinez shot attempt. However, Martinez’s shot was blocked by a United defender and cleared out of the box.

In the 62nd minute Morris Duggan had a great scoring chance to double Minnesota United’s lead, but Daniel made a diving save to his left to keep the ball out of the net.

The Earthquakes won a free quick just outside the box in the 65th minute. Cristian Espinoza’s bid to even the score with his free kick curled just to the right of the net out of bounds.

“Yes, absolutely yes,” said Espinoza when asked if he thought he had scored once he kicked it. “As soon as I saw the ball going over the wall, I was almost expecting that it was going to end up inside the net. It was very close, but unfortunately, I didn’t score the goal.”

Then in the 78th minute, Mark-Anthony Kaye’s right footed shot from outside the box in the center was blocked by Hassani Dotson. San Jose’s best attempt to score the equalizer came in the 80th minute when full back Dave Romney’s (San Jose Earthquakes) with right footed shot from the central position outside the box was knocked away by Minnesota United goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.

St. Clair finished the match with two saves on the evening to earn his second clean sheet of the season. Daniel made five saves on six shots on goal in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished with 10 corner kicks. Minnesota United had four.

Midfielder Niko Tsakiris made his season debut when he came in as a substitute for Rodriguez in the second minute of stoppage time.

San Jose is 7-7-4 in the all-time series versus Minnesota United.

Canucks comeback, Barracuda fall 5-4 in OT

The Barracuda will be looking to sweep the Canucks to start off their 4 game road-trip.

San Jose continued their scoring spree early at 7:21 of the first when Jimmy Schuldt scored in his first game back. Schuldt with his 5th of the season, Andrew Poturalski and Thomas Bordeleau registering the assists. Previous to today’s game, Schuldt was called up to the Sharks due to major injuries effecting the big club.

On their first powerplay opportunity of the game, Pavol Regenda took advantage and cashed in his 3rd power-play goal of the season. Danil Guschin and Rem Pitlick registering the assists.

Abbotsford cut into San Jose’s lead at 1:19 of the second with Max Sasson scoring his 1st short-handed goal of the season. Linus Karlsson registering the lone assist.

San Jose extended their lead at 5:27 when Colin White scored his 9th goal of the season. Walker Duehr and Pavol Regenda registering the assists. Regenda with his second point of the night.

On Abbotsford’s first powerplay opportunity, Danila Klimovich scored his 8th power-play goal of the season. Linus Karlsson and Sammy Blais registering the assists.

On a bad change by the Barracuda, Tristen Nielsen scored his 9th goal of the season to tie the game at 3. Christian Wolanin registering the lone assist.

After a goalie delay of game penalty, the Barracuda were given their 5th power-play goal. Colin White took advantage scoring his 2nd of the night and 1st power-play goal of the season. Thomas Bordeleau and Walker Duehr registering the assists. With his 2nd of the night, White gave San Jose the lead once again.

With three minutes left, Linus Karlsson tied the game and sent it into overtime. Arshdeep Bains and Max Sasson registering the assists.

At 3:09, Linus Karlsson who sent the game into overtime, wins it for Abbotsford.

The Barracuda will be back in action next Saturday on March 15th for the only away series against Tucson this season. The last time these two teams faced off was on Saturday February 8th when the Barracuda split the series in a 5-3 win.
