Langeliers Launches Three Homers as Sacramento Athletics Crush Nationals in 16-7 Slugfest

The Sacramento Athletics turned Nationals Park into their personal home run derby on Tuesday night, jumping all over Washington’s pitching in a 16-7 offensive showcase. Catcher Shea Langeliers led the offensive charge with three home runs, powering a relentless attack that reminded everyone just how dangerous the Green and Gold can be when the bats are hot.
From the very first pitch, Sacramento looked like a team that had no intention of easing into the evening. Langeliers opened the game with a towering drive to center field for his 20th homer of the season, and that was only the beginning.
Nick Kurtz followed with a single, Brent Rooker laced a double, and JJ Bleday drove them both in with a line-drive single to make it 3-0 before a single out had been recorded.
Colby Thomas finally gave the Nationals their first breath of relief with a flyout, but Darell Hernaiz immediately snatched it away with a two-run blast to dead center. By the time the first inning mercifully ended, the A’s led 5-0 and had already knocked the wind out of the home crowd.
Luis Severino, meanwhile, was in complete command on the mound for Sacramento, mowing through Washington’s lineup with little resistance. He retired the first six hitters he faced, needing minimal effort to preserve the early cushion.
Severino’s efficiency allowed the offense to keep piling on, and in the third inning, the onslaught continued. Thomas walked and stole second, setting up RBI opportunities for the bottom of the order. Tyler Soderstrom cashed in with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 6-0, and by the end of three innings, the game felt like a mismatch from another era.
Langeliers, though, was far from done. In the top of the fourth, after Nick Kurtz doubled and Rooker singled him home, JJ Bleday crushed a two-run homer to center that made it 9-0. Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore had already been chased, and the Sacramento dugout was grinning ear to ear as their bats turned the contest into a highlight reel. Langeliers punctuated the next inning with his second homer of the night, a solo shot to left that reached the upper deck in a hurry.
The Nationals finally broke through in the fourth with a run on Brady House’s RBI single, but it felt like trying to stop a tidal wave with a paper cup. By the sixth, Washington had trimmed the deficit to 10-3, but Langeliers crushed his third home run in the seventh.
Sacramento wasn’t content with just tape-measure homers. In the eighth, the Green and Gold put the game completely out of reach with a barrage of hits. Rooker and Bleday each ripped two-run doubles, and by the time the inning ended, the Athletics had built a 16-3 lead.
Rooker finished the night with four hits, two doubles, and four RBIs, while Bleday added four hits of his own, including a homer and double, driving in five. Kurtz reached base four times and scored four runs, and Hernaiz chipped in with a homer, a sacrifice fly, and three RBIs.
The bullpen made things a little more interesting than manager Mark Kotsay would have liked. Eduarniel Núñez and the relief corps stumbled in the ninth, allowing Washington to scratch across four runs and briefly raise the volume in Nationals Park.
Robert Hassell III doubled home a run, Luis García Jr. plated two more with a sharp single, and Brady House walked with the bases loaded to bring the Nationals within 16-7. Osvaldo Bido finally slammed the door with a strikeout to end a marathon final frame.
By the numbers, this was Sacramento’s most explosive performance of the season. They racked up 24 hits, six of them for extra bases, and went 10-for-20 with runners in scoring position. The top half of the lineup was virtually unstoppable.
Langeliers’ three-homer night not only stole the spotlight but also gave the A’s catcher 22 bombs on the year, a career-best pace that underscores his emergence as one of the premier power threats at his position.
For the Athletics, this wasn’t just a win; it was a statement. After a stretch of uneven offensive showings, the Green and Gold reminded the league that they can light up the scoreboard in a hurry. With Langeliers locked in, Rooker heating up, and a deep supporting cast, Sacramento’s lineup looks ready to make every series a test of endurance for opposing pitchers.

After losing a heart-breaker Monday to the Pittsburg Pirates (49-65) in a walk-off 5-4 the San Francisco (57-57) rallied the troops and dominated the Pirates in game two winning 8-1 on Tuesday at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Every Giant in the line up had a hit in the game and the Giants also had three home runs.
Both Heliot Ramos and Willie Adames had terrific games. Wednesday the Giants will be looking to finish the series with a win in game three.
Game recap: After the disappointing loss on Monday, the Giants needed to get more production at the plate and tie up this series. In Game One they had seven hits, the Pirates with six.
Neither team scored in the first or second inning. The Giants Christian Koss got the game going in the right direction for San Francisco hitting a two run home run in the third inning.
The Pirates cut the Giants lead in half in the third when Bryan Reynolds singled Isiah Kiner-Falefa home still trailing 2-1. Pittsburgh had the bases loaded with two outs but failed to put any more runs up on the board.
The Giants were just getting this game going in a three-inning rally scoring six runs. Jerar Encarnacion scored in the fourth inning with a home run to center to extend their lead to 3-1. This was his first home run of the season.
Rafael Devers singled in the fifth inning and Heliot Ramos who was having a great game scored for a 4-1 San Francisco lead. Ramos had been on base three times so far in the game. The Giants tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Willie Adames homered with Rafael Devers on base taking a 6-1 lead.
San Francisco had scored in three straight innings so why not make it four straight innings. Patrick Bailey got in on the action hitting a single in the sixth inning driving both Dominic Smith and Jung Hoo Lee home for a dominating lead 8-1. Through six innings the Giants had ten hits. Every single player on the San Francisco line up card had a hit in a great offensive game.
Pittsburg pitcher Mike Burrows had a rough outing almost completing five innings but was relieved by Braxton Ashcraft in the fifth. He finished going 4 2/3 innings allowing five hits, six earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
San Francisco’s Logan Webb had a terrific game going six innings allowing seven hits, one earned run, no walks, and ten strikeouts. He was relieved in the seventh inning by Matt Gage.
The Giants would take the 8-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Tristan Beck closed out the game and San Francisco had finally won their first game against the Pirates this season and tying up the series. They finished the game with 11 hits.

The Pirates tied up the game in the ninth and then added a second run to take the first game of the three-game series. Tuesday Giants starter Logan Webb pitched six innings, seven hits, one earned run, and struck out ten hitters.
The Pirates starter Mike Burrows pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five hits, six earned runs, three walks and struck out three. The game got underway under cloudy skies with no rain expected and a temperature around 80 degrees at first pitch.
Wednesday the Giants will be looking to win the series sending their ace Robbie Ray to the mound. He has a 9-5 win/loss record and a 2.85 ERA. The Pirates will start Andrew Heaney who comes into the game with a 5-9 win/loss record and a 4.89 ERA. First pitch for game three is scheduled for 9:35 AM.

It was looking pretty good for the San Francisco Giants (56-57) going into the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game of their series with the Pittsburgh Pirates (49-64). Despite it being a one-run game, San Francisco brought in their most successful closer Randy Rodriguez.
It was a surprising inning from Rodriguez who walked the first batter followed by hitting the next batter Jack Suwinski. Joey Bart tied up the game 4-4 with a single.
With only one out, Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded into a fielder’s choice Suwinski scored from third and that was the ball game with the Pirates coming from behind and winning 5-4. The Giants again fall under five hundred for the third time this season and the Pirates won the first game of the series after sweeping San Francisco at Oracle last week.
San Francisco scored two runs in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead. Dominic Smith singled Willie Adames home and Casey Schmitt walked with the bases loaded bringing Francisco Devers home for the second run.
It was a horrible start for Pirates pitcher Oviedo who allowed two singles and three walks. He loaded the bases to start the inning giving up a single for the the first run and with the bases remaining loaded walked Casey Schmitt home for the second run of the inning.
The Pirates got up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with a single run. Spencer Horwitz scored from second base . He reached second base on a fielding error from Heliot Ramos and scored on a Nick Gonzales sacrifice. They had cut the Giants lead in half.
Neither team was able to score in the second, third or fourth innings and going into the fifth inning the Giants were hanging onto a 2-1 lead. San Francisco had a few singles in the third inning but neither team had runners in scoring position for the next three innings.
Justin Verlander finished the game going five innings only allowing three hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. He was relieved by Carson Seymour in the sixth inning. Seymour pitched into the seventh inning.
Jung Hoo Lee had a monster hit in the fifth inning, a triple that brought both Willie Adames and Matt Chapman home taking a 4-1 lead.
When it looked like the Giants would take the 4-1 lead into the eighth inning the Pirates Jack Suwinski hit a two run home run and it was a one-run game, the Giants leading 4-3. Giants pitcher Carson Seymour unfortunately walked the first at bat that he faced to start the bottom of the seventh giving up the two runs.
Spencer Bivens took over on the mount in the bottom of the eighth inning looking to protect the Giants one run lead after San Francisco went three and out to start the inning. Bivens gave up a single and with two outs Randy Rodriguez came in to try and get the final four outs. The Giants were able to tag Nick Gonzales out at second for the third out and the Giants were three outs away from winning the first game of the series.
The top of the ninth inning got underway with the Giants looking for at least one insurance run. Pittsburgh pitcher Dauri Moreta carved up the Giants with a fly out, a strikeout and a lineout. It would be up to Randy Rodriguez to save the game for San Francisco.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Rodriguez had walked Andrew McCutchen and went on to hit Jack Suwinski putting two runners on base. After going hitless for the entire game Joey Bart got a hit to center field allowing McCutchen to score from second base tying up the game 4-4.
In a most disappointing finish to this game Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded into a fielder’s choice and Suwinski scored for the 5-4 walk-off. It was an especially tough loss for Giants closer Randy Rodriguez who had been dominant this season.
Game notes: After taking a series off the New York Mets over the weekend, the Giants took on the Pirates ( at PNC Park. The Giants had a blowout win over the Mets yesterday winning the game 12-6. In late July, the Pirates swept the Giants at Oracle and Monday night the Pirates continued on that path taking the first game of the series at PNC.
After winning the series over a very good Mets team the Giants looked to have turned a corner going forward and are hoping to finish strong in the next two months. Monday night Justin Verlander was looking for his second win of the season but didn’t get the decision as the Giants lost it after Verlander had left.
After a rough start in this three game series the Giants will be looking to even up the series in game two. Logan Webb will take the mound in Tuesday’s game. He comes into the game with a 9-8 win/loss record and a 3.31 ERA. The Pirates plan on starting Mike Burrows who has a 1-3 win/loss record and a 3.88 ERA. First pitch for this game is scheduled 3:40 PM.

Tough loss for the Bay Area Panthers against the Vegas Knight Hawks in Indoor Football League Playoffs at SAP Center in San Jose on Sun Aug 3, 2025 (Bay Area Panthers photo)

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The #1 seeded Bay Area Panthers (13-3, 0-1) were de-clawed and escorted out of the Indoor Football League Playoffs, after an odds defying loss, 36-31 to #4 Vegas Knight Hawks (10-6, 1-0) in the Capital City of the Silicon Valley at SAP Center on Sunday night.
The Panthers were in trouble early and never led during the 60-minute postseason battle, Although the home team and favorite opened the game with the ball, they weren’t able to take advantage of having the primary possession.
The Knight Hawks took full advantage of their initial possession. Vegas QB Ja’Rome Johnson scored on a 1-yard keeper for an early lead. With the Nevada guests being up by seven points, they were on the verge of doubling their score.
Panthers’ QB Josh Jones was picked off by CB Elijah Blades on their second possession. Vegas followed the turnover with another visit to the endzone. Signal Caller Jayden De Laura performed a 25-yard scramble over the goal line.
The Knight Hawks were up 14-0 with four and a half minutes left in the first quarter. That lead held up until the end of the first 15 minutes of gametime, 14-0.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Vegas lit up the scoreboard again with yet another touchdown. Wide receiver CJ Windham Jr, caught a scoring pass for six points, but the PAT was not converted by kicker Ben Derby. The guests from the Silver State went up by 20 points, 20-0.
The Panthers finally scratched the scoring column when running back Josh Tomas rushed into paydirt, bringing his squad within 13 points, 20-7. BAP recovered their own kickoff and was seemingly in business, with momentum.
However, Vegas CB James Ceasar performed a trifecta on the defensive side of the ball. He forced a fumble by Jones, recovered the ball, then ran it into the endzone. This feat put the team up by 19, with another missed PAT, 26-7.
Tosin Oyekonmi scored on a rushing play, closing the deficit to 12 points. During the kickoff, Axel Perez booted the ball through the uprights, garnering a “Deuce” for his accuracy, and narrowing the margin they trailed by to 10 points, 26-16.
After a huge defensive stop by the Panthers, the inhabitants of the “Jungle”: were activating a shift in energy of the contest. Tomas was able to score another rushing touchdown with nearly a minute and a half left in the half. Perez; drop kick put two more points on the board and placed BAP in the closest position to the lead during the entire game, 26-24 VKH.
Right at the recess bell/whistle, Knight Hawks’ Derby kicked a crucial FG with triple zeros on the scoreboard. At the half, Vegas was up by five, 29-24.
Nearly five minutes into the second half, Vegas was not done scoring. Wide receiver Quinten Randolph caught a TD pass, to put his team up by 12, 36-24. However, about four minutes later, Panthers’ WR Tyrese Chambers caught a TD pass to get the Panthers within single digits again, 36-31.
That advantage lasted until the end of the third quarter. The final quarter was a defensive standoff, as both teams made big stops against each other. With a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter, the Panthers could still earn a dramatic comeback win on a touchdown.
The Bay Area Panthers turned the ball over on downs while attempting a pass to a receiver in the end zone, They also had a forceful goal line stance, turning Vegas over on downs, saving their playoffs life.
At the One-Minute Warning, the Panther had a golden opportunity for an extraordinary win in the final seconds of round 1 of the playoffs, On 4th and 11, they only used up five seconds on the clock.
Vegas on the other hand, only used 16 seconds, then commenced to miss a field goal that would have put them up by 8. With 30+ seconds on the clock, the Panthers had one more chance. Unfortunately for them and the SAP faithful, that dramatic victory did not come to fruition for the top-seeded team.

As the Panthers will go into the offseason looking for answers, the Knight Hawks will be taking on either the Arizona Rattlers or the San Diego Strike Force, on the road for the Western Conference title.
