Oakland A’s podcast with Charlie O: A’s snap the losing streak at six but need to find a way out of the cellar soon

by Charlie O Mallonee

When you look at the A’s right now and look at the situation 13-22 as a record their last in the American League West. They have the worst record in the A.L. Really I could stop there and that would be enough, there is more to go with that that makes the troubles of the A’s that much greater. They did snap a six game losing streak on Tuesday night against the Boston Red Sox with a 9-2 romp and home run help by A’s slugger Josh Reddick.

Prior to the win on Tuesday the A’s were 0-6 in extra innings as they dropped a 5-4 decision to the Sox on Monday night in 11 innings. Even more importantly when I saw the stat I had to check it a couple of times to make sure it was correct. The Athletics are 1-11 in one run games. Now over the course of the season in baseball your going to have a lot of one run games.

If you’ve got a ratio like that it’s going to be a season that’s totally forgettable 1-11 is just unbelievable. The kind of stretch that their in right now this is the kind of stretch that cost managers their job. Let’s be clear A’s manager Bob Melvin should not be fired. A lot of things that are happening are beyond Melvin’s control.

When a team is on a slide like this it’s a situation where you can’t fire players, you can trade them, you can move them up and down in some cases to the minor leagues. You can’t fire everybody and start a new, so somebody when you get fired it’s usually the manager. I’m concerned for Melvin right now. Whether or not if he’s able to hang on as skipper if things continue to slide the way they are.

The A’s are going to want somebody’s head soon, the other thing this kind of situation that creates for a team the attitude of “maybe we ought to have a fire sale” that’s a little bit early were 35 games into the season to talk about a fire sale that may seem a little early. You have to think realistically that if the A’s stay on the path that their on right now their eight games out of first place if they continue this kind of slide their not gaining any traction. You have the complete possibility of having a team completely out of the race by the All-Star break.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Jeremy Kahn: Giants open road trip with huge victory; Babo and Dusty inducted to BASHF

by Jeremy Kahn

The Giants who are paying a visit to the Houston Astros opened the series with Chris Heston pitching for the Giants threw a two hitter and did it against one of the toughest clubs in the big leagues. It was a complete game for Heston and an 8-1 victory for the Giants and Heston pitched so well he retired the last 22 batters in a row. The Giants have found their niche with the fifth starter in the rotation behind Madison Baumgarner and Tim Hudson.

This was a great night to keep the bullpen rested too with the likes of Santiago Casilla, Sergio Romo, Yusmeiro Petit, Jermey Affeldt, Javier Lopez, and Jean Machi these guys have been throwing a lot so far this season. This was one of the quickest games this season and the Giants have been playing better as of late. They had a 7-3 home stand and now their on the road in Houston and their heading to Cincinnati on Thursday.

These are important games for the next six games because the Giants are only home for three games before they return to the road again.

Bonds and Baker what their induction means to the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame: Former San Francisco Giants manager Dusty Baker and former Giant outfielder Barry Bonds who came through with 762 home runs. It is the most hollowed record in all of sport and Barry set the record on August 7, 2007 and I was there when he set the all time home run record.

It was one of the most memorable accomplishment in sports that I’ve seen in my life and I’ve been to numerous sporting events in my lifetime. For Dusty Baker he really deserved it and he was a manager for the San Francisco Giants for over ten years. The Giants went to the World Series for the first time since 1962 in 2002 and they went all the way to game seven in the 02 series.

Dusty played for the Braves, Giants and played for the A’s for his last season in 1986 and he was with the Giants in 1984-85. A side note Baker and Barry’s father former outfielder Bobby Bonds grew up together in Riverside California and the day Barry was born in 1964 Dusty held Barry and they were kids and Dusty was 16 years old when Barry was born.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Could the A’s finish in last place this season?

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

Yes they could. Today only the Houston Astros have a winning record among the five teams, and even teams like Texas can beat anybody on any given day, such is the nature of baseball. But this year the Astros might not win the division, but they are a most improved team, with a 40 year old manager and former A’s catcher A.J Hinch and a much better bullpen, at the end with Luke Gregerson who was with the A’s bullpen prior to this season, he is closing and doing the job.

After trading the heart of the lineup in the span of a few months, first Yoenis Cespedes on July 31, 2014 and then Josh Donaldson to Toronto this winter, Athletics baseball was a new team, a new entity. But this new entity is not necessarily better than the 2014 team that lost because Jon Lester could not the lead them on the wild card game against Kansas City.

In the Bay Area many people consider A’s general manager Billy Beane a “genius”, I am not in that crowd. He could be a genius if the consideration is that he saves money for the team, and has been able to compete with the big boys. But a real genius at least wins a couple of pennants, and even maybe a World Series or two. Its either that or we have lowered the standard of the word genius.

However, all good runs come to an end. There is a lot of season ahead in 2015, but the Athletics right now look like a team lost for transition, a team actually looking for that identity that they had. Who are the 2015 A’S?

That question may or may not be also be on the mind of the top brass of the team. We all know that for the A’s to have a good season at the gate, they mostly won early in the season, or the people(come July)would forget about them, pack up and go to the beach in Santa Cruz.

Anybody that has been in the Bay Area for a long period of time, and lived here for a long period of time (like yours truly who has lived in the Bay Area since 1969) realizes that the Bay Area has been Giants territory, many years before they moved into cozy AT&T and won three World Series in five years. Before the famous territorial rights announcement that they own San Jose and the A’s do not.

Anybody with any type of memory remembers that even when the A’s were winning their three consecutive World Series titles in 1972-73-74, the Giants who were not a winning then were still the darlings for the media and fans, and always got the headline above the A’s. Maybe is because the Giants arrived in the bay before the A’s, or for whatever reason, that has always been the case in Northern California.

The only time when the Athletics really came up to the front and became a very popular franchise even challenging the Giants, was during the Walter Haas ownership, when they built a strong team-organization and made it to three straight World Series in 1989, 1990 and 1991. The Haas ownership invested in the team and more important, invested in the community and it paid dividends. Former A’s players Rickey Henderson, Dave Stewart, Jose Canseco, Bob Welch, Mark McGwire, Dennis Eckersley, they had real star power, which translated to the first team surpassing the two million in attendance in the Bay Area.

Today’s Athletics have a couple of months to find out who they are. If by mid summer they are still trying to find out, then it will be too late. They have plenty of time to correct their woes, but on the other hand they are in uncharted territory since in the previous seasons they have always excelled during the first part of the season. Today they are in last place, not a place where the Athletics have been used to occupying in recent memory.

That’s Amaury’s News, Commentary and Podcast: Panda in Oakland to face A’s; media expected to ask about his feelings towards ex-Giant teammates

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The last time Pablo Sandoval of the Boston Red Sox was in San Francisco was in downtown Civic Center for the City Hall celebration of the San Francisco Giants World Series championship on a rainy San Francisco afternoon. I was covering that event that day and it was a great moment for the Panda and the Giants that October day.

Pablo was a big part of that and there was no player more popular other than the Giants Tim Lincecum but Sandoval was as popular of a guy than that the Giants ever had and their going to miss him. The Giants brass of CEO Larry Baer, General Manager Bobby Evans, and manager Bruce Bochy presented the World Series ring on Sunday to Pablo at a S.F. hotel where the Red Sox are staying in preparation for their series in Oakland starting Monday night.

Sandoval is expected to get a lot of applause when he makes his appearance at the Coliseum on Monday night remember with all respect to the A’s when the Red Sox play in Oakland there’s more Red Sox fans who show up. It’s like when the Yankees play there. So you can expect Pablo to get a lot of applause and a couple of boos.

Sandoval was a very good player, he’s very popular, I knew this was going to happen, Pablo was never happy with the Giants they kept bringing up the weight problem and this was well discussed on radio and TV in Spanish and English. In spite of his weight you might remember when he hit two home runs as a Giant in the 2012 World Series against the Detroit Tigers Justin Verlander.

At that time nobody said anything about Pablo’s weight he hit three home runs in the World Series he’s in the company of Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson and those guys. The Giants didn’t want to meet his request to get him the same amount of money that teammate Hunter Pence was getting and it was because of his great finish towards the end of last season that he was given the $95 million offer by the Giants. The Sox ended up matching the offer and the rest is history.

Sandoval was part of the three titles in 2010, 2012, and 2014 and he only communicates with two Giants and that’s manager Bruce Bochy and Pence. That’s kind of unusual you would think he would be talking to guys like Buster Posey, Jeremy Affeldt, and Brandon Crawford who gets along with everybody. So there is that internal question that everyone is going to inquire about in this series. You can best believe the spotlight will be on Pablo all week long.

Cal Bears hire new AD podcast: There’s excitement in Strawberry Canyon over Mike Williams hiring

by Morris Phillips

BERKELEY–With the recent hiring and taking off the interim title for Cal Athletic Director Mike Williams it now adds some stability for the Cal athletic department and their looking for someone who is going to be leading the program and after being an interim for the last 11 months the university has decided to stay with Williams.

The main responsibility for the director is to hire a football or the basketball coach and the stability comes in terms of how much money is spent. The university spent big on upgrades on Memorial Stadium. That part of the budget put the university in a real bind in terms on how to finance the whole thing and hopefully with some of the positive changes happening in the athletic program and with Williams experience in financing that will improve.

Williams is an enigma in terms of who he is he had worked in the finance sector prior to coming to Cal and he was really involved in the day to day operations in running the athletic department and working at the university. He seems to have the respect from his head coaches and it’s student athletes. It’s too early to tell which direction Williams plans to take the athletic department but remember the biggest issue again is that there is some balance and semblance that they don’t over extend themselves on spending.

Williams will watch the finances in terms of not losing a sport or a program like they had with the crisis in the baseball program three years ago. It’s kind of hard to say what direction he would take the program but the basketball program is jelling with the recent signing of Ivan Rabb and Tyson Jolly. Williams knows that he’s still learning new things everyday but as the interim director he had good on the job training.

It’s important for Williams to keep his finger on the pulse of what happens with the athletic department and how it’s ran. Williams realizes he has to know what is going on, for example in the football program. Williams earned the respect of the coaches and players by attending their practices and standing in with the coaches and players to listen, observe and learn about each program. That might have very well been the key reason why he got the permanent job.

Golden State Warriors podcast with David Zizmor: Green is the most effective defender to stop Gasol and Randoph

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–The Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is having a fantastic season he finished second in the voting for defensive player of the year. He’s really blossomed and has come into his own in kind of surprising fashion. At the beginning of the season David Lee was slated as the starter at power forward and then Lee hurt his back and was out for a couple of months and Green took his place the rest as they say is history.

The first two games against Memphis Green has been everything as advertised he’s guarded both Mark Gasol and Zach Randolph the big Memphis forwards. These guys have been key in the front court for the Grizzlies. It’s not an easy job Green really has got to push his energy levels to there limits and Gasol and Randolph might have to see him for over 40 minutes a night in this series because the Warriors don’t have a ton a guys whose effective against either of those guys.

Green gets in there he’s willing to do the dirty work against two of the best front court players in the NBA. Your talking about Gasol a guy whose been the NBA Player of the year a year ago and your talking about Randolph whose probably the best if not the best low post scorer at the power forward spot besides Tim Duncan.

These guys are fantastic and it takes every ounce of energy to keep these guys from dominating so Green is critical in this game. He had a tough game two, he did okay and Randolph and Gasol didn’t dominate him in either of the first two match ups. The thing they got to watch out for is Green gets into foul trouble. You go against guys who are that good your going to get fouled.

You just have to try and space them out you don’t want to get the foul too quickly, one thing we saw in game two is Green got two pretty quick fouls and they sent him to the bench to early. When he’s on the bench the Warriors have a lot of trouble getting the right combination of players in to stop those guys. Festus Ezeli, Andre Iguodala, these guys come in and they all try to do something.

Their just not as good at guarding those guys as Green is and Ezeli might have a shot he’s a big guy he’s got length he can man up against someone like Gasol or Randolph but he’s not as quick. He still doesn’t have as big a basketball IQ as Green does. What the Warriors really need is effective minutes from Ezeli because Lee isn’t going to cut it, Iguodala is not going cut it either he might be able to stop some passes but he’s not big enough to stop them in all plays all game long.

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs podcast with Joe Lami: Caps Ovechkin is no doubt the series MVP: Flames could tie it up in the dome Fri

by Joe Lami

Chicago 4 Minnesota 0: I’m a little bit shocked that the Chicago Blackhawks were able to sweep the Minnesota Wild in four games like that. The Wild were playing some great hockey, the fact that they kind of had a dud in the second round it’s a bit shocking that the knocked out St.Louis. I definitely thought the series would have gone farther maybe six or seven games. Chicago because of their playoff experience it looked like the offense was able to give the goaltending some breathing room too.

Anaheim 2 vs. Calgary 1: For Calgary to get some elbow room in this one it all depends on game four on Friday night in Calgary. If the Flames can find a way to win game four in the dome its a brand new series. If the Ducks are able to beat the Flames at the dome Anaheim is probably going to take it five. The Flames Johnny Gaudreau at 19:40 in the third period tied up the game at 3-3 for the Flames and it was an awesome play and he shot it down low and hit that corner to tie it. Michael Backlund was able to win it in overtime at 4:24 for the Flames 4-3.

Tampa Bay 3 vs. Montreal 1: With the Canadiens down three games to none it was about time the Habs finally win a game they won in the Lighting’s house in game four 6-2. The fact is the Lighting is really kind of dominating the series and they’ve done so well playing it close. Game two was that double overtime where the Lighting took it 2-1. The Lighting were able to win one at the Bell Centre on Wednesday night 2-1 and the Canadiens were able to take a crucial four goal win 6-2 on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.

The Lighting offense has proven to be way too powerful and I was expecting the Habs goalie Carry Price as a candidate for the Hart Trophy and he’s up for winning two awards for the work he’s done this season. He hasn’t played that great up to this point in this series. Montreal finally stole a game with a huge win on Thursday night in game four 6-2.

Washington 3 vs. NY Rangers 1: Game five with the Caps in front of the series 3-1 is going to New York on Friday night. The Capitals dominated this series from the start with a 2-1 game one win, the Rangers evened things out in game two 3-2, and then the Caps came back with a vengeance and won the next two games 1-0 and 2-1.

The Rangers on Friday face elimination at the Madison Square Garden and the Caps Alexander Ovechkin has been no doubt the MVP of this series so far. The fact is Washington head coach Barry Trotz has been an absolute outstanding coach and he was able to put a successful defensive system in Washington. He has a strong offensive system winning these two last games and putting the Rangers on the brink of elimination.

Golden State Warriors Mission Bay Arena: Jack Davis political consultant will stand between the Warriors and new arena project

by Tony the Tiger Hayes

SAN FRANCISCO–Political campaign consultant Jack Davis is no joke, he managed to stop the San Francisco Giants in a 1992 campaign to build a new downtown stadium in San Jose. Davis in one his clever campaign mailers to San Jose voters had a photo of then owner Bob Lurie with a rectangular opening where his nose should have been asking voters to put this on their light switches.

Each time they hit the switch they would say “Flip off Bob Lurie” on the idea on building a new stadium for the Giants in San Jose and the Giants who were campaigning successfully lost their chance to build in San Jose. Considering that move and many others Davis could very well compromise the Golden State Warriors attempts to build at Mission Bay.

The Warriors have committed to buying the land at Mission Bay although they have not officially purchased the land at $30 million as an option and $150-155 million for the land, yet be assured they will have the funds ready when needed to buy the land from Salesforce. The Warriors want to build the arena and two towers that are 120 feet tall which meets the City’s height limits at the waterfront.

Davis who campaigned for former Mayors Frank Jordan and Willie Brown and ran successful campaigns for both. Davis will be at the forefront of the campaign to stop the Warriors from building the new arena at Mission Bay. Willie Brown dropped out from supporting Davis and the Mission Bay Alliance because it would “conflict” with his objectivity as a columnist with the San Francisco Chronicle as he appears in the paper every Sunday in his column “Willie’s World”.

Davis pledged to be very aggressive in this campaign, he will be coming at the Warriors like a bad habit and the key to the cog in the Warriors wheel will be California Environmental Quailty Act issues that are being visited by Mission Bay Alliance attorneys. Davis who will do political consulting who will oppose the new Warriors arena with many strategic mailers to San Francisco voters.

Davis strikes fear in the hearts of many when he steps into any election campaign and his goal here is to get a initiative on the ballot that will oppose the Warriors arena on their CEQA issues which is not limited to traffic issues on overlapping and non overlapping games with the Giants, traffic that would impede emergency vehicles access to and from nearby UCSF Hospital, noise issues that would impact waterfront residents, and live stock or environmental concerns that the new arena or the towers would impact.

Davis is exploring the stopping of construction of the two towers. At issue with the “no wall at the waterfront” theme. Even if the Warriors are within the height limits an environmental impact study is still be being explored to stop the towers.

Davis said regarding lining up attorneys and environmental attorneys, “We have hired the very best CEQA attorneys to go over every line (in the Warriors arena blue print plans filing of Mission Bay). Warrior president Rick Welts said he is committed to purchase the land, “We have financing and we have an ironclad agreement to buy. We are buying the land. Period.”

San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s podcast: Will there be opposition to Giants planned development in lot A; A’s Josh Reddick is hitting em where they ain’t

by Michael Duca

SAN FRANCISCO–There is almost no way that the Giants will lose on property development if they go forward with the plan to build condos and affordable housing in parking lot A at AT&T Park. This will also help further the Giants ambition to further improve the ball park and the neighborhood. There is certainly a lot of benefit to having housing out in the Giants parking lot.

The Giants would like to develop some space that would fan user friendly where fans can play catch before ball games and simulate a diamond in part of that space and that would be kind of a center piece for development in that area. This would replace the parking garage and it would a little problematic taking out a seven story building full of cars and making it a flat parking lot.

There have been skeptics regarding this project proposal by the Giants and there are people who will make things up to make sure you don’t like the things that they don’t like. As best as I can tell the initiative that was proposed the voters in San Francisco would have to approve anything that exceeds the maximum height limits at the waterfront. The Giants in essence would be limited to whatever the voters approve. The Giants would like to get the initiative on the ballot in time for November’s election.

Oakland A’s update: It’s going to be interesting to see what winds up happening just because the A’s Josh Reddick is hitting well and that certainly occupies one outfield spot. A’s outfielder Cocco Crisp will be back any day in fact he might be back against the Twins Wednesday. That creates an issue because Burns is not going to move to the DH role. There needs to be a place for Crisp to play.

Reddick who became the American League player of the week last week co-shared the honors with the Houston Astros Jose Altuve is in good company because he’s an awesome player wrapped in a very small package. Reddick has really come out of the gate fast after his injury kept him out of the line up early in the season. Once he got off the D.L. Reddick has been playing very well. He has had a few defensive lapses that are uncharacteristic for him but he certainly hasn’t carried that into the batters box.

A’s pitcher Sonny Gray who’s 4-0 and has an ERA of 1.67, Gray doesn’t mess around on the mound. He doesn’t waste pitches I rarely understand guys who nibble to get their pitch count up early. They show that they give everything they got and some of them can’t stay in games. Gray doesn’t do any of those things. He goes out there and says here’s the pitch see what you can do with it.

by Tony the Tiger Hayes

SAN FRANCISCO–It seems just like last week that Pablo Sandoval was plopped on his back-side celebrating the final out of the Giants third World Championship in five years – but here we are already one month into the 2015 season. Coincidently the ’15 campaign is shaping up a like the 2014 season.
