Sabercats End Remarkable Season With Arena Bowl Victory

By: Joe Lami

The San Jose Sabercats wrapped up their dream season on Saturday night with a 68-47 victory over the Jacksonville Sharks to capture Arena Bowl XXVIII.  It marks their fourth arena bowl championship, and their first since 2007.

The championship game was played at Stockton Arena in place of the Sabercats’ usual home of SAP Center at San Jose due to an event conflict. Stockton is also the birthplace of Sabercats’ head coach, Daren Arbet, making this championship even more special. “To bring it back here is extra special. I will never forget this day for the rest of my life.  It means everything to win here and to bring it back here is huge,” added the coach.

San Jose started the game slow and finished the first quarter trailing the Sharks 14-6. The catch of the night finished with Jacksonville’s second touchdown of the night.  Tommy Grady threw to the side of the end zone towards Anthony Jones who was able to bring it in before going over the boards while maintaining possession of the ball to complete the touchdown.

The Sabercats also trailed going into the half after Joe Hills gave the Sharks the 33-27 lead with just 15 seconds remaining.  Hills had a monster night in the loss, as he caught nine passes for 133 yards and four touchdowns.

The third quarter was when San Jose finally broke the game wide open, as their defense led the charge contributing in three turnovers that led to 28 points.  The bombardment started when David Hyland picked off a Grady pass and returned it ten yards for the score.  On the next drive, Cleveland Thomas recovered a Xavier Brewer fumble.  Sabercats quarterback, Erik Meyer, used the turnover to his advantage and found Dairu Reyonalds for the touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff the ball hit the left upright and create a live ball. After a mad scramble for it, Ken Fontenette recovered the ball for the Sabercats’ touchdown for the 55-33 lead and eventually iced the championship for San Jose.

The fourth quarter ended up being a blur, as Sabercat fans were counting down the minutes left in the season.  The final score was 68-47, as the Sharks push wasn’t good enough to make the comeback.

Meyer finished the night 17 of 29 for 204 yards and four touchdowns.  Erik also took off on the ground as he kept the ball three times for 26 yards and two scores. Arbet commented on Meyer’s ground game, “That’s something that when we got Erik, we knew he could do it. We didn’t want him to do it, but this one was for all the marbles and we told him hey if you need to take off, take off and get it”.

With the victory, San Jose finishes the season with a 20-1 record, the best record in league history. “Not only did this team break the league record, but they way they did it. The margin of victory. An average of 22 points, that’s just amazing,” added a smiling Arbet. Cornerback, Thomas added “you have so many great guys that put their personal accolades aside for the better of the team”. Grey also commented, “100% the best team I’ve ever been on.”

It also marks the fourth time Arbet has coached his way to an AFL Championship. The two-time coach of the year is expected to make it three after this outstanding season.  His players had nothing but nice words for their coach. Thomas said, “he’s everything man”. Grey praised the hall of fame coach, “that’s coach of the year there. Everybody in that locker room knows he’s coach of the year. He pushed us and this was our outcome. This is where he was from and it meant something for us to win this one in his home town”.

Niners Pre-Season Week Three Preview

By: Joe Lami

Leading up to the third game of the pre-season, the 49ers traveled to Denver a few days early for joint practices with the Broncos that took place on both Wednesday and Thursday.  They were competitive, but kept calm compared to other joint practices that took place this week that involved fights. Saturday will give the Niners a chance to see how they compare to one of the powerhouses in the AFC.

This week’s matchup marks the 37th time the two teams have faced off against one another in the pre-season. Denver has the 20-16 advantage, and has won the previous two.

The Broncos are 2-0 on the pre-season, averaging 18 points per game, while averaging nearly 370 yards of total offense per game.  Thus making Saturday’s matchup an interesting one for the 49ers’ defense who completely shut down the Cowboys in week two.  Another solid performance for the 49ers’ defense can help with the confidence of a squad that lost most of its starters last year to retirement or free agency.

However, with the defensive success that San Francisco had in week two, the offense continues to struggle, as they were held without a touchdown and were forced to kick three field goals last week.  The struggles are especially noticeable through the air, as the 49ers are averaging 73 yard passing per game.  While Colin Kaepernick isn’t solely the problem on this, it is something to keep in mind as we inch closer to the regular season.

Kaepernick should see a bit of playing time, as there is a need to begin to create chemistry between him and newly acquired wide receiver, Torrey Smith.  Smith was targeted one time in week two, but the pass was broken up by a great play in the end zone taking away the touchdown.

The only worry about keeping Kaepernick in a game that really doesn’t matter is that the Broncos are leading the NFL in sacks through the first two weeks of pre-season with 12.

Week three marks an important one for those trying to make a place on the squad, as it is the final game before the mandatory cuts the NFL puts in place, as all rosters need to be cut down to 71 by September 1st.  Among the cuts, one of the most probable was un-drafted rookie quarterback, Dylan Thompson, whose been abysmal through two weeks.

Once again, the primary focus will remain on breakout star, Jarryd Hayne.  The first year footballer and former Australian Rugby star is making head waves among the media, although head coach, Jim Tomsula is not all that surprised by his early success.  Many are already tabbing the running back as part of the 53-man roster for his impressive play on special teams, especially on the punt return team.  However, I still believe that Hayne has a lot more to do to make the pro roster.

While he is a dominating player when returning the punt, he needs to work on his blocking.  One play from last week comes to mind, as he missed a block that led to a sack for Dallas.  However, it seems like Hayne is quickly becoming a fan favorite, making it a tough decision for Tomsula and the 49ers staff.

49ers Cowboys Pre-Season Week Two Preview

By: Joe Lami

The Niners opened up their pre-season last weekend losing to the Texans 23-10 in Houston. While disappointed in losing their first game out, they were a lot of bright performances.  The biggest has to be that of former Australian rugby star, Jarryd Hayne.

Hayne was the star of the night, as he broke off the biggest run of the night for 53 yards.  He has definitely brought attention to himself, as his hopes of making the 53-player roster become a little bit better.  On top of getting five touches for 63 yards last week, the 27 year old had two punt returns and one kick return gaining for 57 yards. He was definitely the bright spot in what was a pretty uneventful offensive performance for the 49ers.

Coming into this week against the Cowboys, all eyes are going to be on the race between former Heisman winner, Reggie Bush, and Hayne. They will be competing for the return specialist spot, as well as the number two spot at running back on the depth chart, behind Carlos Hyde.

Bush did not play last week, as most veterans don’t play in the first week of pre-season. Thus making the next two weeks very exciting, as we will get to see these two duke it out for a spot on the roster.

Eyes will also be on quarterback, Collin Kaepernick, as he will be sure to get more snaps against the Cowboys.  Last week, Kaepernick, played only one series going one for three on his throws.  The lone completion came on a short pass up the middle, where he found Anquan Boldin for 14 yards.  Kaepernick also tried to find chemistry with new wide receiver, Torrey Smith, on a deep ball, but unfortunately overthrew Smith who had gotten behind the Texans secondary.

The Cowboys are coming off a pre-season opening loss to the San Diego Chargers 17-7. Tony Romo has yet to see any game reps as he didn’t participate in the loss.  He will be sure to get snaps on Sunday however.

Like Romo, much of the Cowboys’ first string offense didn’t play either, as new running back Darren McFadden, wide receiver Dez Bryan, and tight end Jason Witten were all among the Cowboys’ starters that didn’t put pads on.

Dallas should be an early test for the Niners in the first part of action on Sunday, as the Cowboys are coming off an impressive 12-4 record last year that led them into the playoffs.  It gives San Francisco a chance early on to see how their team looks against a team looking to make another playoff run.

Giants’ Bats Remain Hot; Beat Up on Nationals 12-6

By: Joe Lami

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.

For the second night in a row, the San Francisco Giants bats came a live at AT&T Park, as they defeated the Washington Nationals 12-6 on Saturday night.

They were led offensively by the top of the lineup once again, as Gregor Blanco and Matt Duffy had a huge impact on the victory.

Gio Gonzalez was coming off his best performance of the season, as he tossed eight shutout innings against the Dodgers on Monday. He started hot, retiring the first six batters he faced in order, but it all went down hill from there as he was unable to finish the third inning, even with a two run lead.

The monstrous third inning started with a bang, as Kelby Tomlinson ended Gio’s chance of a perfect game with a lead-off triple into right center. Tomlinson later commented, “it’s always fun when you can put a big inning together, but it just adds to it when you’re the one who starts it”.

Gonzalez walked the next two batters, including a walk to pitcher, Jake Peavy, loading them up for Blanco. Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy, mentioned during post-game that the Peavy at bat was the most important of the night.

Blanco earned his only RBI of his three hit night with a base hit up the middle. The bases would remain loaded for Duffy, until he unloaded them by blasting a double down the left field line making it 4-2.  The rally continued for San Francisco with a Brandon Belt single to center, bringing in Duffy.  Brandon Crawford would later bring in Belt to make it 6-2, marking the end of Gio’s night.  “You don’t expect to score all of these runs off of these guys, but they’re human and they make mistakes. You have to give credit to our hitters for capitalizing,” added Bochy.

The Giants were able to put another crooked number up in the fifth inning, with Tomlinson getting the key hit.  Following an intentional walk to Crawford, Tomlinson was up with runners on second and third and two outs.  Tomlinson was able to find fair territory down the left field line on the double that would score both runners, making it 9-2. “He reminds me a lot of Duffy, he fits well on this team,” added winning pitcher, Peavy afterwards.

Washington attempted their comeback in the sixth inning, where they scored three runs of their own to make it 9-5. Jose Labton hit a two-run double, and would be later brought in by a Michael Taylor triple that ended Peavy’s night.

The hit of the night came in the second inning off the bat of Ian Desmond. Desmond launched his 15th home run of the season 477 ft. over the left field bleachers and coming very close to hitting the Coca-Cola slide. “You see shots like that in bp sometimes, but that’s one of the longest I’ve seen,” Bochy commented. Peavy also mentioned that he couldn’t have throw a worse pitch to Desmond.

The Giants’ dominance over the Nationals continues, as they have faced three of Washington’s aces these last three games in Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer and Gio Gonzalez. In those three games, San Francisco has scored 14 runs on them in a combined 11.2 innings. \

The start of the lineup has been the key, as Gregor Blanco is batting .600 from the lead-off spot i the last two games, and Matt Duffy, batting in the two hole, is batting .500 over his last 12 at bats that include eight RBI.

With the Giants’ dominance of late, they have still yet to be able to make a move on the Dodgers or Cubs for a playoff spot, as both Los Angeles and Chicago won on Saturday.

The Giants look for the four game sweep over the Nats tomorrow, sending out their ace, Madison Bumgarner to face Joe Ross.

Start of the Lineup Key for Giants’ Shootout Win

By: Joe Lami

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—

One night after a pitching duel, the Giants and Nationals’ bats exploded on Friday night as they combined for 20 hits and 13 runs in an offensive shootout of a game that San Francisco was able to outlast Washington in the 8-5 victory.

It didn’t take the Nationals long to gain the lead Friday night, as they were able to get on the scoreboard just a dozen pitches into Matt Cain’s night.  A lead-off walk followed by a stolen base and two sacrifice flies led to the in the rare one run on no hit inning.

Matt Duffy tied things up in the bottom half of the first for his tenth home run of the season and his career.  He turned the Scherzer fastball out to the third row of the left field bleachers to bring the Giants right back in it.

Cain came out shaky in the second inning, as he served up a double to Clint Robinson who smoked it into triples alley, but it wouldn’t live up to its name as he stopped at second. Robinson would eventually try to take home on an easy ground ball to Brandon Crawford, but the All-Star shortstop gunned him out at home to keep things tied at one.

The Giants exploded for four runs on four doubles in the second inning. Four doubles in one inning ties a franchise record for most doubles in a single inning. It was the sixth time they’ve done so in the San Francisco era. Crawford, Justin Maxwell, Gregor Blanco and Duffy were those to do so. San Francisco had the 5-1 lead and all of the momentum coming out of the second inning. The momentum continued into the third, as Hunter Pence jumped on the first pitch of the inning. His eighth homer of the season to dead center over the 399 marker would make it 6-1.

Washington pushed for the come back in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on two home runs. Danny Espinosa kicked started the inning with a solo shot to left center field that bounced off the top of the wall and just had enough to get over.  Bryce Harper had the big sting in the inning thou, as he crushed a three-run shot to right for his league leading 30th of the year.

The Giants would escape the inning with the lead in tact, much thanks to Jeremy Affeldt who came into finish the inning and earned the victory.

Two more Giants’ insurance runs came in the sixth and eighth innings, allowing the bullpen to do the rest and earn the 63rd victory of the season. “The bullpen’s just been terrific for us these last couple of nights,” added Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy. Cain also commented on their performance, “what they did tonight was just tremendous, they kept it all together”.

Gregor Blanco and Duffy had outstanding nights at the plate. Duffy was just one triple shy of hitting for the cycle.  “I thought about it for a couple of pitches, and when I got caught looking at something good I decided to change my approach and let it come to me,” explained Duffy.

While Blanco did everything for the orange and black Saturday night. On top of going three for five with two RBI, he had a diving catch in the outfield to rob Yunel Escobar of a single to end the third. He also beat out a play at the plate sliding into home for the Giants’ seventh run of the night. “He’s been playing with a lot of fire lately, and did it all tonight for us,” said Bochy.

Though Matt Cain didn’t pick up the victory, he pitched four very strong innings and one poor one as he is slowly coming back into form as one of the Giants’ aces. “I feel like I’m almost all the way there. It’s just one final step, nothing major, but I need to get past the hump and throw that one pitch when I need to,” he explained.

Even with the Giants’ victory, they don’t move any closer on the NL West or the second Wildcard spot. They still sit 2.5 games behind the Dodgers after their 5-3 victory over the Reds on Friday and 4.5 back of the Chicago Cubs, who beat up on their cross town rival White Sox 6-5.

49ers Preview vs. Texans

By: Joe Lami

Saturday begins a brand new season for the 49ers, as they travel to Houston to take on the Houston Texans in their first pre-season game of the year. Thus ending one of the roughest offseason’s the Niners have had in recent memory.  With the latest happening Friday, as San Francisco announced the release of Aldon Smith.  The release came after a report that the 25-year old linebacker had been arrested on Thursday night for the fifth time since 2012.  49ers coach, Jim Tomsula, commented on the release “We’re not worried about football. It has nothing to do with football”.

Fortunately for the Niners, they’re able to get back on the field this Saturday. With that in mind, there are a few things to keep an eye on as we move forward in the pre-season. The first of which is to find out who will be replacing Smith as the outside linebacker.  Tomsula commented on losing one of the best pass rushers in the game, “Well, I mean, we’ve drafted. We have a group there. I mean, it’s an area that, regardless if that area, if we felt that area was loaded or we had a lot of people, a lot of good quality talent in the group, which we do. But, that would not have factored into this decision. Not in this case”.

Navorro Bowman will also be returning to the field for the first time since the 2013 NFC Championship game, as he will need to be the savior on defense this season. Getting to see how his leg holds up in limited action will be a gauge of how really prepared he is for this coming season.  Word has it that he is 100%, and he was looking outstanding at training camp, but the eye test isn’t complete until he plays in a real game situation.

Besides the mess at linebacker that will begin to be settled on Saturday, the first preseason matchup of the season will give a chance for fans to see “the new” Collin Kaepernick.  Kaepernick had been working with former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner during this offseason to improve his motion.  From what I could tell at training camp, it was looking a lot better compared to last season.  Kaepernick also was looking a lot more comfortable in the pocket and was able to move around and find an opener receiver.  However, with this observation occurring at training camp, where Collin knows he won’t get hit, he was good.  Come Saturday, when J.J. Watt will be rushing him off his right side, we will see how comfortable he is moving around in the pocket.  Will Kaepernick be this new quarterback we’ve been hearing about or will he return to his old self, being forced into bad decisions?

Finally, the 49ers will get to see their first look at new arrivals Reggie Bush and Jarryd Hayne. Both Bush and Hayne will be competing for the backup running back spot with much excitement coming for both men.  Hayne, a former rugby star in Australia, looking to make a NFL roster spot will be sure to bring a nice physicality to the position.  Bush is entering his tenth season in the NFL, with over 5,000 career rushing yards and 35 touchdowns.  He’s looking for a much needed bounce back season, after only getting 76 touches for 297 yards last season for the Detroit Lions.  Bush will also be bringing his speed to the kick return game, as he was getting reps in training camp.

Why It Was Time For Aldon Smith To Go

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA, Calif.— Friday afternoon was an emotional one for the San Francisco 49ers, as they announced the release of star outside linebacker, Aldon Smith. The release came after news broke that Smith was arrested in Santa Clara County on Thursday night. The 25-year old was charged with hit and run, driving under the influence, and vandalism due to a reported altercation with a neighbor.

Thursday night’s arrest marks Smith’s fifth arrest since just 2012, and the third to involve alcohol supposedly. Thus showing his off the field activity just got in the way too much of his outstanding on the field performance. New 49ers coach, Jim Tomsula, pointed this out during Friday morning’s press conference, “this is a day that doesn’t have anything to do with football. Although he won’t be playing football for the San Francisco 49ers, he will be supported and he helped and he will not have to walk this path alone. We’re not worried about football. It has nothing to do with football”.

As expected, the news seemed to shock the team, as Tomsula reported, “It was unique. It was sadness. That’s what it was. Sadness for a guy, a person. Guys care about, we care about that guy deeply”.

Teammates of Smith had nothing but amazing things to say about him, as 49ers receiver, Anquan Boldin, chimed in on the departure of his teammate, “I think it was just a shock from everybody. It’s a tough loss for us, Aldon is a great football player. It’s tough to replace someone like him, but for me it’s not about football with him, it’s just making sure he’s okay as a person, but as team we have to move forward. We have no choice”.

Linebacker, Anton Bethea added “It’s tough, but at the end of the day, I just wish nothing but the best for him”.

Fortunately for Smith, this will be a wake up call. It gives him a chance to get his off the field issues together, and get his life together. The 49ers gave him as many chances as they possibly could, but things get to a point to where it’s time to cut the ties and move on. That’s exactly what they did on Friday. They did so with grace, as they still showed support for their former linebacker.

Smith becomes a free agent immediately with the release and will be available for pick-up by any team. However, with this in mind, teams are most likely going to be hands off until they figure out Smith’s future with the NFL, and to see what any other actions could be handed down by commissioner, Rodger Goodell.

Smith is officially the seventh standout 49ers’ defensive player from last season to not be returning to the team, as he joins the list of Chris Borland, Perrish Cox, Chris Culliver, Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, and Patrick Willis.

Lowrie Gets Redemption in Oakland

By: Joe Lami

OAKLAND, Calif.–Thursday night’s series opener against AL West leading Houston Astros was a roller coaster of a game, as the A’s are taking a page out of the Giants’ torture type of baseball. Going into the eighth inning, they were leading 2-1, but by the end of it the Astros were able to take the 4-2 lead. However, a ninth inning rally and a blown save later Oakland found themselves in extra innings, but it was all for not as Houston earned their 61st victory of the season with 5-4 win.

It looked promising, as the A’s put Aaron Brooks on the mound in just his second career start.  Brooks pitched phenomenally with a final line of seven innings pitched.  He surrendered one run that came in the first inning on four hits, while he struck out seven. A’s manager, Bob Melvin, commented on Brooks’ outstanding performance “He pitched great, that’s all you can ask from him. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t get the win for him tonight”. Brooks added the key tonights performance was getting ahead with first pitch strikes.

The lone run Brooks gave up was scored by Carlos Gomez, who reached first on a gorgeous bunt down the third base line. Jed Lowrie eventually brought him in and earned the RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Stephen Vogt tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning, when he hit the first of two A’s home runs out to left center field, just to the right of the 388 marker.  The dinger marked his 15th blast of the year.

The A’s took the lead in the fifth inning, as they took Scott Feldman deep to left center again.  Brett Lawrie earned his tenth of the season on the blast that hit off of the glass of a luxury box in what had to have been one of the longest homers of the year. Melvin added “he crushed it, you know how athletic and strong he is when he’s in the cage, and tonight he showed it off”.

Brooks came out of the game at the beginning of the eighth, and things went downhill fast for the Athletics. Fernando Rodriguez, Fermando Abad, and Evan Scriber shared duties.  Rodriguez gave up a single to Jose Altuve to set up a Carlos Correa home run.  It marks Correa’s 14th shot of the season in just 51 games played, as he is a strong contender for the AL Rookie of the Year.  The two-run homer made it 3-2.  Houston was able to add another after Colby Rasmus singled to left, where a miscommunication between Billy Burns and Coco Crisp led to an error to make it 4-2.

The Athletics looked done, until they were able to string together a ninth inning rally, thanks to a Lowrie error that took away a double play putting runners on first and third with no outs.  Stephen Vogt, the man on third scored easily with an Ike Davis base hit.

With the A’s down just one with one out and men on first and third, Billy Burns grounded into what looked like another double play to end the game, but was able to beat out the throw at first by a hair.  The play went to video review, where it was conclusive that Burns beat the throw at first, allowing Lawrie to score and tie things at four.

The roller coaster continued in the tenth as Altuve led the inning off with a base hit.  After a steal and a sacrifice, Altuve was on third with one out.  Former Athletic, Lowrie, earned his second RBI of the game in what ended up being the game-winning hit on a double to left. Oakland was unable to make the comeback in the bottom half of the tenth, handing them their 62nd loss of the season.

International Champions Cup Makes One Final Stop in Bay Area

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–The 2015 Guinness International Champions Cup wrapped up it’s trip to the Bay Area on Saturday with a grand matchup between FC Barcelona and Manchester United.  Over 68,000 fans packed Levi’s Stadium to see the two global powers take part in the cup draw.

FC Barcelona traveled to the United States without two of their strongest players in Neymar and Messi, known as some of the best players in the world.  Though, it didn’t seem to bother them that much, as they dominated possession in the match 65%-35%.  With all of that possession, came a lot of shots, as Barca outshot United 18-10.

However, even with all of those shots, FC Barcelona couldn’t get past the Red Devils, as Manchester United won 3-1. Luck came with it though, as Barcelona hit three posts in the match.  United coach, Louis van Gaal admitted the luck, “We also had a little bit of luck. Three balls on the post, but I was pleased with the performance”, while Barcelona coach Luis Enrique mentioned “post are just part of the game”.

Man U Captain, Wayne Rooney, started the scoring in just the eighth minute, ending his scoreless drought. He headed a corner from Ashley Young in the middle of the box past Mac Andre Ter Stegen to give United the 1-0 lead.

The Red Devil’s mass sub came in the 62nd minute, as van Gaal swapped out all of his starting VI.  The impact was almost felt immediately, as United made it 2-0 in the 68th minute, when a pass on the ground in the box from Tyler Blackett found the boot of Jesse Lindgard, who easily got it past Jordi Masip on the right side, “I’m happy with the reaction from the youngsters from Tuesday.  They came out a lot more aggressive and scored two goals”, commented van Gaal.

Barcelona finally broke through in the 90th minute on a beautiful volley from Rafinha. Sergio Roberto earned the assist with a cross from the right side that found Rafinha at the top of the box, where he took one touch to settle and then powered a volley to the left side of the net.

Just seconds later in extra time, Manchester United got their third, as Adnan Januzaj beat two defenders with a great individual effort to make it 3-1. “He was very good and scored a wonderful goal.  However, it was a little easier without Pique back there”, added van Gaal on Januzaj’s performance.

In David Da Gea’s first game back from injury, he was challenged early and often for United. He earned the clean sheet in all of the 62 minutes he played with three saves. “De Gea stopped the first shot and allowed us to score first. That’s always huge for us”, said van Gaal.

Both Barca and United each have one game remaining in the United States, as Manchester United takes on PSG in Chicago and Barcelona plays Chelsea in Maryland on Tuesday before they return home to Europe to cap off their pre-season play.

Quakes Clash With World’s Elite Manchester United

By: Joe Lami

SAN JOSE, Calif.—18,000 fans showed up to Avaya Stadium on Tuesday night to see global megapower, Manchester United take on the San Jose Earthquakes as part of the Guinness International Champions Cup. It marks the second game for both clubs, as they each have played Club America to start the tournament. San Jose lost 2-1 to Club America a week ago in San Jose. Man U is coming off of a 1-0 victory.

The match marks the first time Manchester United has ever played the Earthquakes, giving San Jose soccer fans a great chance to see legends such as Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, and Bastian Schweinstager up close.

Earthquakes coach, Dominic Kinnear, wanted to make sure his players weren’t star struck out on the pitch going up against some of the worlds best.  “I told them before the game to go out and enjoy it, but it’s important that we make a game out of it”.

They did just that as,the Red Devils came out victorious with a 3-1 victory, though the Quakes did have chances. Manchester United coach, Louis van Gaal, mentioned that he thought San Jose was the better team in the first 15 minutes. Man U finally got on the board in the 32nd minute. Mata rocketed a shot from the top of the box that pinged off of the lower right post and in.

Manchester United added their second just five minutes later, as they took advantage off a bad pass from Jean Baptist Pierazzi. Man of the match, Memphis Depay got the steal and tucked the ball into the right hand corner of the net to make it 2-nil.

The Earthquakes were able to get on the board before half, as a beautiful play by Shea Salinas at the touch line set up Fatai Alashe who hammered it past Sam Johnstone to make it 2-1 going into halftime.

The second half saw a lot of the reserves come into the match for both sides, as the International Champions Cup doesn’t restrict the amount of substitutions a team can use.  Among those reserves was newly acquired Bastian Schweinsteiger for Manchester United.  Playing in just his second match for the Red Devils, he was not impressive according to van Gaal. “We played very bad in the second half, Schweinstegier included”.

Manchester United’s loan goal in the second half came in the 61st minute when Jesse Lingered crossed it from the right side and found the head of Andreas Pereira in the middle of the box who was able to get it past David Bingham.

The Quakes came close to adding another in the 70th minute, when newly signed Marc Pelosi fired a rocket just missing the top left corner. Kinnear liked the play of Pelosi in his first match, “He did okay, I would have liked to see him score though”.
