Barracuda can’t hold lead in loss to Reign

A two-goal third period lead was not enough for the San Jose Barracuda as they fell 3-2 to the Ontario Reign on the road on Friday night.

With an empty net, Sean Backman evened the score at 2-2 for the Reign, firing a one-timer past Barracuda goaltender Aaron Dell at the 18:28 mark.

The game went to overtime, and Ontario’s Nic Dowd delivered the game-winner in the first shot of the extra session.

San Jose struck first with two goals in the first period. Karl Stollery scored five minutes into the game on a power play. Then, with six minutes to play in the period, Trevor Parkes deflected a shot into the net to give the Barracuda a 2-0 lead.

But it was not enough, as neither team scored in the second and the Barracuda could not hold on to the two-goal advantage.

The loss means head coach Roy Sommer will have to wait until Saturday for another chance at tying Fred “Bun” Cook for most wins in AHL history. Sommer currently has 635 wins.

The Barracuda are now 18-11-5-3 overall and 3-5 in overtime. They face the Reign again on Saturday night at SAP Center.

Kings pull away from Lakers behind Cousins’ 36

LOS ANGELES–DeMarcus Cousins scored 36 points as the Sacramento Kings pulled away from the Lakers 112-93 at Staples Center on Wednesday night.

Up 86-77 heading into the fourth quarter, the Kings put the game away in the fourth. After Lakers cut the deficit to just four, the Kings responded with a 13-0 run to take a 104-87 advantage midway through the quarter. Cousins scored six quick points during that spurt, including a jump shot to give the Kings the 17-point lead.

Despite the big win, the Kings only led by five at halftime at 57-52 in game that the Lakers kept close until the final stanza. Brandon Bass and 18 points off the bench to lead the Lakers in scoring, while Kobe Bryant and Lou Williams had 15 points each.

Sacramento led 28-18 after the first quarter. Cousins was joined by four other Kings in double figures, while Omri Casspi had nine points.

Winners of three in a throw, the Kings sit at 18-23 and tenth in the Western Conference. They will face the Hawks at home on Thursday.

 

Warriors dominate Cavaliers on the road

The Golden State Warriors laid a thorough beatdown on the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night, winning 132-98 in an NBA Finals rematch in Cleveland.

The Warriors led by 26 at halftime and did not look back, starting the second half on a 9-0 run to essentially put the game away extremely early. It was the largest loss of the season for the Cavaliers as the Warriors led by as many as 43 points.

Stephen Curry poured in 35 points, making 7-of-12 from three-point range and did not need to play the fourth quarter. Andre Iguodala added 20 points off the bench as every player on the active roster played and scored for the Warriors.

Golden State cracked 100 points with still more than a minute to play in the third quarter, and a three by Curry gave the Warriors a 40-point lead at 104-64. They took a 27-point advantage into the fourth.

The Warriors jumped out to a 10-2 lead on a barrage of threes by Curry and Klay Thompson. They played free-flowing offense and dominated the Cavaliers on both ends. Consecutive threes by Curry after drawing an offensive foul on LeBron James put the Warriors ahead 34-19 late in the first quarter.

They continued to outscore the Cavaliers at a furious pace in the second quarter. A 14-1 run midway through the quarter capped off by a Curry layup off a turnover gave the Warriors a 57-32 advantage. The Warriors went up by 30 late in the half on a three by Draymond Green, and took a 70-44 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Sommer moves closer to history in Barracuda win

The San Jose Barracuda notched a decisive 5-2 win over the Rockford IceHogs on Friday night and Roy Sommer moved closer to history by recording his 635rd career win.

While Rockford scored the first goal, but San Jose scored the next two with goals from Petter Emanuelsson and Bryan Lerg. The IceHogs responded on a one-timer by Mark McNeill to even the score, but Trevor Parkes answered for the Barracuda to give San Jose the lead again.

Up a goal in the third period, the Barracuda put the game away with two scores in the final frame.

The Barracuda have recorded points in their last eight games. Their road trip continues tomorrow in Des Moines against the Wild.

Barracuda beat Gulls in overtime

San Jose Barracuda head coach Roy Sommer won his 634th career game and it came in grand fashion — a 2-1 overtime win over the San Diego Gulls on the road on Wednesday night.

Karl Stollery finished off a pass from Nikita Jevpalovs with less than 30 seconds remaining in overtime to notch the win for the Barracuda.

All goals were scored in the third period. The Barracuda struck first midway through the final frame on a one-timer by Nark Cundari. But shortly thereafter, the Gulls responded as Antoine Laganiere converted on a rebound to tie the game at 1-1.

While the first two periods were fill with scoring chances, lots of action, and a fight, neither team could score a goal. Barracuda goaltender Troy Grosenick fared well, making 24 stops including a crucial save on a penalty shot in the third.

The Barracuda advance to 17-10-3-3 on the season and are 3-0-1-0 against the Gulls. They have collected points in 11 of their last 12 games,

San Jose will now head to the midwest to take on the IceHogs in Rockford, Illinois on Friday.

Warriors dominate Blazers on the road

The Golden State Warriors played a textbook game by their standards on Friday night, routing the Portland Trail Blazers 128-108 on the road on Friday night.

Klay Thompson paced the Warriors with 36 points, making 7-of-10 three-pointers. Stephen Curry added 26 points while Brandon Rush dropped 20. Draymond Green recorded his eighth triple-double of the season with 11 points, 10 assists, and 13 rebounds.

The Blazers cut into a 22-point Warriors’ halftime lead, starting the third quarter on a 10-4 run. But the Warriors responded with a 14-2 spurt to extend the lead back up to 25 at 92-67. Rush finished off the spurt with a couple of baskets.

Curry knocked down a three to end the third quarter, and the Warriors took a 106-87 lead into the fourth, a comfortable advantage they held throughout the fourth for another big win.

In a highly efficient first half, the Warriors shot 11-of-17 from beyond-the-arc, helping contribute to a 74-point half. The Blazers played relatively well, but the Warriors’ offensive was relentless. Thompson drilled a three in the final minute of the second quarter to give the Warriors a 24-point lead. They led 74-52 at halftime.

The Warriors jumped out on top early, holding the Blazers without a field goal for nearly the first five minutes of action. Two three-pointers by Rush put them up 15-4 midway through, and then Thompson took over.

Thompson poured in 19 points in the first stanza alone, scoring the Warriors’ final 14 points of the quarter. He made all five of his three-point attempts, and a jumper at the buzzer gave the Warriors a 38-21 advantage after one.

Barracuda beat Condors in a shootout

Jeremy Langlois recorded the lone goal in the seventh round of the shootout as the San Jose Barracuda defeated the Bakersfield Condors 5-4 on the road on Saturday night.

Aaron Dell and Laurent Brossoit both were perfect through six rounds, denying the first 13 shooters before Langlois came through.

With the game tied a 4-4 heading into overtime after a scoreless third period, San Jose notched several quality opportunities in the extra session but could not convert.

The second period consisted of nothing but offense, with each team recording three goals. Micheal Haley, Barclay Goodrow, and Ryan Carpenter scored for the Barracuda while Joe LaLeggia, Marc-Oliver Roy, and Matthew Ford notched goals for the Condors and the second period ended with the score tied 4-4.

Bakersfield got on the board first with Matthew Ford finishing after stealing a clear attempt by Dell, but Michael Haley responded for San Jose by scoring on a rebound, his third connective game with a goal.

The Barracuda are now 13-10-2-3. They return home on Sunday to take on the Texas Stars at 5pm.

Banged-up Warriors find a way past Rockets

With a short lineup, the Golden State Warriors were blown out by the Mavericks, but responded a day later with an impressive 114-110 win over the Houston Rockets on the road on Wednesday.

To wrap up 2015, the Warriors delivered an impressive and hard-fought win to advance to 30-2. Without Stephen Curry, Harrison Barnes, and Leandro Barbosa, Klay Thompson picked up the slack with 38 points, while Draymond Green recorded yet another triple-double with 10 points, 16 assists and 11 rebounds.

The Warriors entered the fourth quarter up 90-82, and several key baskets by Thompson down the stretch helped seal the victory. Thompson outdueled James Harden, who went for 30 points, but could not lead his Rockets to a fourth quarter comeback.

After falling behind 12-4 early, an 11-3 run featuring nine points from Thompson helped Golden State take a 20-17 advantage. The Warriors led 33-30 after one and went into halftime with a 61-59 lead.

Houston took a brief lead in the third quarter. But the Warriors took advantage of a momentum swing midway through, going on a 10-0 run to take a 80-78 deficit into an 88-80 lead. Following a three by Thompson, James Michael McAdoo earned a dunk off a steal to cap off the run.

The Warriors will look to heal up and head into Saturday’s home game against Denver healthy.

Warriors defeat Cavaliers in marquee Christmas Matchup

The Golden State Warriors fought their way past the Cleveland Cavaliers in a marquee Christmas Day matchup, defeating the Cavaliers 89-83 on Friday afternoon.

The Cavaliers closed on a 10-point Warriors advantage in the fourth, but Stephen Curry sliced to the rim for a couple of layups to keep the Warriors ahead. His layup put the Warriors in front 85-80 with a minute to play.

Golden State knocked down its free throws, finishing off one of the signature wins of the season thus far and advance its record to 28-1.

Draymond Green was the best player on the court with 22 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists. Curry added 19 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds.

With a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Warriors maintained the slim advantage, playing Cleveland’s halfcourt style of offense but still outscoring the Cavaliers. A dunk by Shaun Livingston in transition put the Warriors ahead 77-69 midway through the fourth. Livingston was key off the bench with 16 big points.

Out of a timeout, Green’s layup gave the Warriors a 10-point lead, their first double-digit advantage of the night.

However, the Cavaliers answered with a 6-0 run, fueled by James to claw within four at 81-77. J.R. Smith knocked down a three to make it a one-possession game at 83-80.

The Warriors started off the second half well. Thompson connected on some jump shots and a dunk by Green put the Warriors up 54-46 and forced a timeout. Curry’s three-point play on a layup inside gave the Warriors a 57-49 advantage.

But the Cavaliers answered, and a three by Smith cut the lead to three. With both teams playing tight, the Warriors took a 64-59 lead into the fourth quarter.

After a slow offensive start, the Warriors went on a 19-5 run to end the first quarter and take a 28-19 lead into the second. Green had a big first quarter with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Livingston made a couple of jumpers to extend the Warriors’ advantage at the end of the quarter.

Curry retreated to the locker room early in the second quarter with an apparent leg injury, but returned a few minutes later after he was cleared to play. Meanwhile, the bench unit allowed the Cavaliers to go on a 9-0 run and tie the game at 31-31.

In a low-scoring first half, the Warriors scored eight of the final 10 points to enter halftime with a 45-42 lead. Despite the injury, Curry still had 10 points, although the Warriors’ 45 points was tied for their lowest in a first half this season.

Barracuda fall in overtime to Gulls

The San Jose Barracuda lost their third straight game on Friday night, falling in 3-2 overtime to the San Diego Gulls on the road.

With the game tied 2-2, Stefan Noesen won the game for the Gulls, finishing off a pass from Brandon Montour on rush less than two minutes into the extra session.

The Barracuda had evened the score in the third period courtesy of Nikolay Goldobin, who found the back of the net midway through the third to tie the game at 2-2.

After a scoreless first period, San Jose jumped on the board first on a goal by Karl Stollery. But San Diego answered with two power play goals to take a 2-1 lead into the third.

Barracuda goaltender Troy Grosenick played well despite the loss, stopping 28 shots in defeat.

San Jose drops to 9-9-2-3 while San Diego advances to 13-10-0-1.

Next up will be a matchup against the Stockton Heat at home on Sunday.
