The wait was finally over as the 2023 MLB All-Star Game was underway at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday.
The National League defeated the American League 3-2 for the first time since 2012. Elías Díaz delivered the game-winning home run in the eighth inning. Díaz earned the All-Star Game MVP.

The NL’s starting lineup featured Ronald Acuña Jr., Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez, Nolan Arenado, Luis Arráez, Sean Murphy, Corbin Carroll, and Orlando Arcia.

The AL’s starting lineup featured Marcus Semien, Shohei Ohtani, Randy Arozarena, Corey Seager, Yandy Díaz, Adolis García, Austin Hays, Josh Jung, and Jonah Heim.

After a scoreless first inning, Yandy Díaz hit a solo home run to give the AL a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

J.D. Martinez helped the NL tie the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Martinez scored on a Luis Arráez RBI single.

The AL regained their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Salvador Pérez singled for a 2-1 lead. Pérez now has three All-Star Game hits — the second-most by a Kansas City Royals player.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a game-tying home run, and the NL tied the game 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning. However, Gurriel Jr.’s home run was overturned and called foul. The score remained 2-1 AL.

Elías Díaz hit a two-run shot to give the NL a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning. Díaz’s two-run home run sealed the NL’s win over the AL.

#3 Doval in that ninth inning struck out Rockie hitters Nolan Jones and Harold Castro for his eighth consecutive save.

#4 Doval in picking up his 26th save is now tied for the MLB lead with the Cincinnati Reds reliever Alexis Diaz for saves.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Opposing teams might have problem playing in minor league parks if A’s leave Coliseum; All Star Game in Seattle tonight

Major League Players Association Executive Director Tony Clark said that the relocation of the Oakland A’s will impact players, front office personnel, stadium employees, fans, visiting teams. No one will be left out from the effects of the A’s moving to Vegas. (AP file photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury it’s been since early June when Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said that the MLB owners will take a vote on the Oakland A’s relocation move to Las Vegas here we are second week of July day of the 2023 All Star game no vote is planned. Is this an indication to you that the 30 owners are far apart on this relocation move to Las Vegas and more than eight teams are voting no on the relocation idea.

#2 Tony Clark of the MLB Players Union says that one of the issues of relocating to Reno or Las Vegas to play games in over 100 degree heat in temporary homes for the A’s during the 2025-27 seasons is a concern for visiting MLB teams who come to Nevada to play the A’s.

#3 Clark also said that there are a lot of people affected by the A’s move to Las Vegas, the players, manager, coaches, visiting ball clubs, fans, Oakland Coliseum employees and front office personnel. This move will have those groups having to move and accept a lower pay scale and possible pay cuts in because of lower wages offered in Nevada.

#4 Amaury do you think one of the factors that is stalling the owners from taking the vote is that Manfred has waved the relocation fee and that teams will take in less revenue since the A’s will now play in the 40th and smallest market in MLB and have the smallest ballpark in MLB.

#5 Bally’s who owns the Tropicana site has offered four more acres of land space making it 13 acres to build the new ballpark on it and giving it more room for the retractable roof. Does such an offering from Bally’s sweeten the deal for the A’s getting more space?

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Kyle Freeman withering in pain from an apparent shoulder injury in the bottom of the seventh against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sun Jul 9, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the San Francisco Giants podcast with Marko Ukalovic:

#1 Giants pitcher Logan Webb was great Sunday. He pitched a complete game shutout against the Colorado Rockies at Oracle Park. The Giants won, 1-0, capping his performance by striking out the side in ninth.

#2  Webb scattered seven hits and struck out 10 of the 31 batters he faced. 75 of his 103 pitches counted as strikes. The effort improved Webb’s record to 8-7, 3.14.

#3 Colorado starter Kyle Freeland threw a beautiful game for the 6-1/3 innings he was able to pitch before he injured himself fielding Casey Schmitt’s bunt in the bottom of seventh, an attempted sacrifice that went into the books as the sixth hit allowed by the Rockies’ starter. Freeland suffered a dislocated shoulder.

#4 The Giants had broken a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the fourth with JD Davis’s 421 foot home run to left center fielder. It came on Freeland’s first pitch of the frame, an 85.4 mph sinker that rose on a 30 degree angle leaving the Giants’ third baseman’s bat at 109.1 mph.

Oakland A’s podcast with Barbara Mason: Baseball Commissioner booed at All Star game draft over A’s relocation

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred addresses the Oakland A’s draft selection shortstop Jacob Wilson to a chorus of boos at the 2023 draft at Lumen Field in Seattle (ESPN photo grab)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Barbara:

#1 Tough times continue for the Oakland A’s dropping the third game of the three games series in a close battle with the Boston Red Sox 4-3 at Fenway Park.

#2 The Red Sox with the win have a five game winning streak going and the A’s pitching as well as hitting could not put a dent in the Red Sox pitching or stop their hitting.

#3 Masataka Yoshida has been a huge help for the Sox hitting .316 with ten home runs and 44 RBIs and has provided some offensive punch for Boston. Singled and scored the tying run against the A’s.

#4 Oakland pitcher JP Sears took a no hitter into the fifth inning but gave up an unearned run. Sears had control on the Sox hitting but ran out of gas in the fifth.

#5 At the MLB baseball draft in Seattle MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was introduced and was booed loudly there were several reasons for that one of them is basically fans want the A’s to sell and keep the team in Oakland a chant and a push by fans who insist the A’s do not relocate. Manfred was introducing A’s draft pick Jacob Wilson and said he was from Grand Union University there is no Grand Union University.

Aces Steamroll Lynx 113-89; 10th win in 11 games for Vegas

Kelsey Plum of the Las Vegas Aces is ready for that top scoring cigar after doing most of the heavy lifting against the Minnesota Lynx leading with 40 points in Minnesota on Sun Jul 9, 2023 (@LVAces photo)

Aces Steamroll Lynx 113-89

By Barbara Mason

Sunday night the Las Vegas Aces (17-2) steamrolled the Minnesota Lynx (9-10) with ball protection front and foremost in their mind and came away with a 113-89 win. The Aces were favored in this game but they were against the Dallas Wings as well and lost that game Friday night by two points. This season the Aces have beaten their opponent by an average of 20 points but that did not even come close to happening in their last game with Dallas.

It was a remarkable turnaround from the Aces last game winning every quarter in this game.

After the first ten minutes of play, the Aces had built a 28-19 lead and they did not let their foot off the pedal for the entire game. They won the second quarter 26-23 and had a half time lead of 54-42.

They went on to win the third quarter 26-19, the fourth quarter 33-28 and the game. They only had 12 turnovers in the game much improved from the 18 they had in their last game. Kelsey Plum had a career high 40 points which propelled Las Vegas to their 17th win of the season. She had an amazing 14 of 18 shooting. She was also six of nine from beyond the arc. This was their third win this season over the Lynx.

This win clinched a Western Conference berth in the Commissioner’s Cup. Right now the Aces are averaging 92 points a game which is a point behind the WNBA record. Las Vegas really righted the ship after their second loss of the season last Friday.

Besides the 40 points from Plum, Jackie Young had 17 points and was five of nine from downtown. Las Vegas made 17 shots from beyond the arc. A’Ja Wilson also had another double digit game with 15 points and ten rebounds.

Game notes: Friday night the Las Vegas Aces dropped their second game of the season in Dallas against the Wings in the final minute of the game 80-78. The Aces with 18 turnovers in the game did them no favors.

Tuesday night the Aces will take on Brittany Griner and the Phoenix Mercury at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Giants Webb throws first career shutout 1-0 over Rockies at Oracle

SAN FRANCISCO–Baseball, they say, is a game of inches. It gets measured in statistics that are painfully precise. And yet baseball people use language, even when talking about basic arithmetical facts, that are obviously inaccurate. We say a batter is hitting at a certain level “against the league,” when he’s playing against every team in major league baseball (15=30?)

We say that the all-star break marks the season’s halfway point, yet today’s encounter between the Colorado Rockies and your San Francisco Giants, the last game before the much needed break, was the visitors’ 91st of the season, and the hosts’ 90th, in a 162 game season. Go figure.

The orange and black started the day in third place at 48-41, putting them third place in the NL’s western division, 3-1/2 games behind the division leading Arizona Diamondbacks. The 33-53 Rockies could only dream of reaching such heights. When all was said and done, the Giants still were in the third place, but could pick up a game on Arizona if the Pirates hold on to the 3-2 lead they had in Phoenix when the game here ended.

The Giants led with their ace, Logan Webb. arguably their best starter. His numbers this year aren’t exciting, 7-7, 3.38 at game time, but, given the weaknesses, both manifest and subliminal, in the Giants’ defense, aren’t a good indication of his quality. His career record against Colorado. was 6-2, 3.97, but it was 3-1, 2.67 at sea level.

Webb was great this afternoon. He pitched a complete game shutout in a game the Giants won, 1-0, capping his performance by striking out the side in ninth. He scattered seven hits and struck out 10 of the 31 batters he faced. 75 of his 103 pitches counted as strikes. The effort improved Webb’s record to 8-7, 3.14.

The Rox went with Kyle Freeman, an ok sort of a pitcher, whom you can’t take for granted, but he’s not someone who intimidates you by his mere presence on the mound. His repertory of sinkers, which hee throws 30% of the time), sliders (22.3%-note the precise numbers), four seamers (17.4%), curves (17.4%), and changeups (12.9%) earned him a 4-9, 4.93 record going into the game.

Freeland threw a beautiful game for the 6-1/3 innings he was able to pitch before he injured himself fielding Casey Schmitt’s bunt in the bottom of seventh, an attempted sacrifice that went into the books as the sixth hit allowed by the Rockies’ starter.

He was charged with one run, earned, which came on a home run, and didn’t strike anyone out. Of his 80 offerings, 41 were considered strikes. He was charged with the tough loss and ended the day with a record of 4-10, 4.72.

Justin Lawrence replaced him and pitched out of the two on and one away jam to keep the Giants from increasing their 1-0 lead. Lawrence followed that up by putting the home team down in order in the eighth. If it weren’t for his injury, Freeman, too, might have gone the distance.

The Giants had broken a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the fourth with JD Davis’s 421 foot home run to left center fielder. It came on Freeland’s first pitch of the frame, an 85.4 mph sinker that rose on a 30 degree angle leaving the Giants’ third baseman’s bat at 109.1 mph. The promising episode ended with an around the horn double play.

It was an exceptionally fine ball game. The Giants can now take their ASG break on an upnote. Their serious business will resume when they face the Pirates in Pittsburgh on July 14th. weren’t for his injury, Freeman, too, might have gone the distance.
