#1 Tanner McKee Stanford Cardinal quarterback got some help from Casey Filkins scored a touchdown and got kicking help from kicker Joshua Karty who booted three field goals in the Cardinal shocker over the Notre Dame 16-14.

#2 McKee had 288 yards passing and helped the Cardinal end an 11 game losing streak against FBS opponents.

#3 The Cardinal had lost a two touchdown lead to the Oregon State Beavers Sat Oct 8 and the Cardinal just turned things around against the Fighting Irish Sat 15th. With the ball on the Stanford 25 Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne threw on fourth and seven Stanford Jonathan McGill safety broke up a pass with 1:04 left in the game to prevent the Irish from scoring.

#4 After the game Stanford head coach David Shaw said that the Cardinal really needed that win and Shaw thought it was going to be tough getting the players ready early in the week but it wasn’t difficult at all they had a good practice and defeated Notre Dame.

#5 Stanford goes up against the Arizona State Sun Devils (2-4) who won their last game against the Washington Huskies at ASU 45-38. Knowing that do you see this game as a toss up this Sat Oct 22 as you will be there to cover this contest live and in person.

Last Two Minute Retort: Blazers surge late, beat Kings 115-108 on opening night

SACRAMENTO–The Kings came out flying, recovered at half, and appeared ready to close late when De’Aaron Fox forced Damian Lillard into a bad pass with the Kings leading 106-105 with 1:55 remaining.

Then disaster struck.

Consecutive turnovers by Fox and Domantas Sabonis, followed by Jerami Grant’s basket and ensuing, made free throw ceded momentum to the Blazers in their 115-108 win at Golden 1 Center.

In losing the Kings failed to retain the enthusiasm of a new season, a new coach and renewed hopes to end their playoff drought dating back to 2006. That left an unsatisfied coach Mike Brown.

“I know this group should play a lot better on both ends of the floor,” Brown said. “I know this group can play a whole heck of a lot better on both ends of the floor.”

Individually, the Kings were superior. Fox led the Kings with 33 points, and Kevin Huerter delivered 23 in his Sacramento debut. The starting guards combined for 11 made 3-pointers.

But the visitors countered with six, double-figure scorers that masked an off-night for Lillard, who missed 13 of his 18 shots. Defensively, the Blazers quickly adopted a different approach after Huerter and Fox came out hot.

“Going small and switching everything hurt their rhythm,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups said. “But I thought most of the night we did a pretty fair job defensively. They put a lot of pressure on you.”

“To win on the road you’ve got to be willing to deal with some storms, some adversity,” Lillard said.

The Kings trailed 39-26 midway through the second quarter when a closing kick gave them a 55-51 lead at halftime. Terence Davis had eight of his 14 points in the spurt including an off-balance 3-pointer with 55 seconds remaining.

Grant led the Blazers with 23 points, Anfernee Simon’s added 22 and Lillard had 20.

Sabonis carried the Kings in the paint, with 13 points, five assists and four rebounds in 33 minutes on the floor.

The Kings host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday at 7:05pm.

OPENING NIGHT: Bill Russell was honored in the pre-game ceremonies with a video tribute. Russell coached the Kings for the first 58 games in the 1987-88 season. Home run king Barry Bonds, Metta Sandiford-Artest and Brad Miller were among the team’s honored guests.

Rookie Keegan Murray was held out for precautionary reasons following his absence due to COVID protocols.

The Warriors start the new season with a win over the Los Angeles Lakers 123-109

The Golden State Warriors started the season with a resounding win over the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday night at the Chase Center. The final score was 123-109. The Warriors want to win their fifth championship in nine years. They lost four or five key players after the season ended. The Warriors added Donte DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green to go along with James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga, and Moses Moody. 

The Warriors gave out their championship rings to the players before the start of the game. NBA commissioner Adam Silver was in the house to congratulate the players. The game was on TNT, and TNT had Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Ernie Johnson doing commentary.

The Warriors had guard Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, and Kevon Looney on the court to start the contest. The Lakers started LeBron James James, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Patrick Beverly, and Lonnie Walker.

The first quarter started slowly. As it was the first game of the year, both teams were slow to get things going. The Warriors finished the quarter leading 25-22. Things heated up in the second period. The Warriors outscored the Lakers 34-30 to finish the first half with a 59-52 lead.

The Warriors were up by 11, but LeBron James made two buckets to cut the deficit to seven. Curry paced the Warriors with 16 points. Jordan Poole, leading the second unit, added ten. Anthony Davis had 15 for LA. LeBron added 14 and Westbrook 11.

As they have done so many times in the past, the Warriors dominated the third quarter. Thompson led the way as he tallied nine points early in the period. With the score 66-58, the Warriors went on a 25-4 run to lead 91-64. The Lakers fought back and made it a 91-71 game at the end of three. The Warriors outscored the Lakers 32-19

Los Angeles went on a 22-9 run in the fourth quarter. They trailed by 13 100-87. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr called a timeout so that the Warriors could regroup. Curry and Wiggins led the offensive surge to put the game out of reach.

Wiggins made three threes, and Curry had a three, a deuce, and a four-point play to put the game away. The score was 121-104 with 1:52 left to play. Kerr allowed the bench players to finish out the game.

The Warriors played well on both ends of the court. They continued to shine on defense. They showed the NBA that they have a powerful offensive juggernaut. The fans went home happy, but was Kerr satisfied with his team’s effort? Coaches always say players have to improve.

Game Notes and Stats: The Warriors’ offensive stars were Curry, Wiggins,Thompson, and Poole. Curry finished with 33 points. Curry knocked down four three in 13 attempts. A couple of the threes came in the fourth quarter when the Lakers made a comeback.

Thompson, playing just 19 minutes, finished with a18 points. Thompson knocked down two threes. Wiggins had 20, and Poole had 12. Warrior bench players contributed too James Wiseman, JaMychal Green, and Donte DiVincenzo each had eight points. JaMychal Green and Wiseman each pulled down seven boards.

The Lakers had four players in double figures. LeBron paced the Lakers’ attack with 31 points and 14 rebounds. Davis had 27 points and six boards. Russell Westbrook had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Kendrick Nunn added 13. The Lakers’ bench did not produce much Tuesday night.

The Warriors play Friday night again when they host the Denver Nuggets. The game will start at 7 pm at the Chase Center.

Sharks Fall 5-2 to Isles, on Verge of Matching Worst Start

The San Jose Sharks are still searching for their first win and points of the season after another thumping, this time at the hands of the New York Islanders 5-2 Tuesday night.

Nicole Sturm and Evgeny Svechnikov both scored their second goals of the season in the loss. The Islanders pepper James Reimer with 45 shots, putting the Sharks one loss away from matching the franchise record.

Sturm beat Semyon Varlamov on a wrist shot 12:50 into the first period, but the lead would be short-lived. Anders Lee and Zach Parise scored in the middle minutes of the second period. 

Svechnikov beat Varlamov on a deflection in the waning minutes of the second period, his second point of the game after assisting on Sturm’s strike. Any hopes of heading into the break tied wasn’t in the cards. Oliver Wahsltrom scored with 56 seconds left in the period for a 3-2 lead.

Wahlstrom would score again 5:24 into the third and Cal Clutterbuck added the empty netter for the Sharks second five-goal loss in as many games.

The Sharks continue on the first true road trip of the season when they face coach David Quinn’s old side, the Rangers Thursday night.

#1 Barbara, the Warriors concluded their last pre season game against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night with a 119-112 loss at the Chase Center it was more of a game of taking a look at who they have on their bench coming into the season.

On the Cal podcast with Morris:

#1 Cal Bears (3-3) suffered what could be their worst loss of the season as the Colorado Buffaloes (1-5) quarterback JT Shrout threw an overtime pass to wide receiver Montana Leomonious-Craig that got Colorado past Cal 20-13.

#2 The Buffaloes Trevor Woods knocked a ball loose intended for Cal receiver Mason Starling on a first and goal. When it was fourth down the students a Colorado University stormed the field victorious.

#3 It was the Buffaloes first victory of the season and their defense held Cal to 103 yards on offense.

#4 Morris did Cal quarterback Jack Plummer have to run all day he was 29-52, 262 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

#5 The Washington Huskies (5-2) are headed for Cal this Saturday. The Huskies won their last game against the Arizona Wildcats 49-39. Huskies have been going good how do you see this match this Saturday.

Mariotta and Falcons rushing attacks sink 49ers 28-14 in upset win

Injuries eventually catch up to the best teams.

The Atlanta Falcons took advantage of the San Francisco 49ers injuries on defense as they dominated the trenches in a shocking 28-14 win on Sunday afternoon at Mercedez-Benz Stadium.

San Francisco had its two-game winning streak snapped and fell to .500. Atlanta has won three out of its last four games to get to .500 after starting the season losing its first two games.

Atlanta (3-3) pulled a reversal of fortune as they pulled a page out of San Francisco’s playbook by controlling the game on the ground and their defense shutout the 49ers offense in the second half.

The Falcons rushed for 168 yards on 40 carries led by Caleb Huntley’s 59 yards on 16 carries. San Francisco on the other hand could not establish its strong running attack as it only had 60 yards on just 16 carries.

The 49ers missed Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Jimmy Ward and Javon Kinlaw on the defensive side of the ball as they were out with injuries. To make matters worse, cornerback Charvarius Ward was injured in the first half and did not return to worsen an already depleted secondary.

Atlanta’s defense made San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense one-dimensional in the second half as they pressured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into throwing two interceptions and rushed throws that ended in incompletions.

San Francisco (3-3) didn’t do itself any favors on the offense with a couple of dropped passes and penalties by the offensive line in the second half that either prevented big plays or negated them.

“When you put yourself in that hole, you can’t overcome some drops (by our receivers) that we missed I thought. There’s no room for error and that’s pretty obvious that’s self-explanatory,” Shanahan said.

Atlanta drove down the field on their opening possession going 74 yards on 11 plays that resulted in a two-yard reception by tight end MyCole Pruitt from quarterback Marcus Mariotta. It was the first opening drive for a touchdown the 49ers defense had given up this season.

The Falcons were gift wrapped their second touchdown when Jeff Wilson Jr. fumbled at his own 20-yard line. Ishiah Oliver picked up the ball and ran to the one-yard line before fumbling it in the end zone where Jaylinn Hawkins recovered it to give Atlanta a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.

“These guys believed. They understood the focus on playing a (good) team like that does a lot of differnt stuff. They (San Francisco) got some really good players, and they were locked in,” Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said.

It was the biggest deficit San Francisco had suffered this season.

San Francisco got back on track by scoring the next 14 points with a Garoppolo connecting with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk for two receiving touchdowns in the second quarter.

The first for Aiyuk came on a wide receiver screen for a 12-yard touchdown. His second was a 14-yard touchdown where he deked out a Falcons defender with a circle move to get free along the right wing where Garoppolo threw a perfect pass and Aiyuk did the rest.

It was a breakout game for Aiyuk as he led San Francisco in receiving with eight catches for 83 yards to along with his two scores. Tight end George Kittle matched Aiuyk’s production also having eight catches for 83 yards.

Atlanta regained their lead with 57 seconds left in the second quarter when Mariotta finished off an 11 play 75-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run where he outraced cornerback Sam Womack III to the corner pylon for a three-yard touchdown.

Mariotta gave the Falcons an insurance score with 8:40 left in the third quarter when he connected with tight end Kyle Pitts on a seven-yard receiving touchdown that completed the scoring in the game.

Marriota started out with a perfect 13 for 13 before finally throwing his lone incompletion in the fourth quarter. He finished 13 of 14 for 129 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also chipped in 50 yards on the ground on six carries and one rushing touchdown.

Garoppolo was hit and miss throughout the game as he finished 29 of 41 for 296 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Wilson Jr. had a disappointing game only rushing for 25 yards on seven carries to go along with his fumble.

Atlanta’s ability to run the ball down successfully set up short and manageable third down situations that San Francisco’s defense wasn’t able to stop and kept the drives alive for the Falcons.

San Francisco offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey suffered a calf injury in the first half while blocking on a run play and did not return to the game.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 3-for-8 on third down conversions. Atlanta was 9-for-14.

San Francisco is now 48-33-1 all time against Atlanta.

#1 Joe, wanted to ask you the San Francisco 49ers (2-3) while favored to beat the Atlanta Falcons (2-3) in Atlanta the 49ers second straight week on the road. Blackhawks get first win of the season, 5-2 over the Sharks

For the second straight night, San Jose took an early lead but was unable to hold it, as the Sharks dropped a 5-2 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday at SAP Center.

It was the Blackhawks’ first win of the season.

Nico Sturm scored his first goal of the season with the assists going to Erik Karlsson and Mario Ferraro at 13:58 of the first period. Just over five minutes later, Karlsson scored his first goal from Logan Couture and Steven Lorentz, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

Chicago came back with three goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Jonathan Toews put the Blackhawks on the board at 7:21, with Sam Lafferty scoring a short-handed tally for the equalizer a minute later. Lafferty scored another short-handed goal at 10:35 to put the Blackhawks ahead to stay.

Taylor Raddysh and Jason Dickinson each scored their first goals of the season in the third period for Chicago (1-2).

Things got heated at the end of the second period, when the Blackhawks’ Jarred Tinordi and San Jose’s Jonah Gadjovich received concurrent minors for roughing, and Chicago’s Andreas Athanasiou received a 10-minute misconduct.

Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen surrendered all five Chicago goals, making 20 saves before leaving in favor of a sixth attacker in the final minute. Petr Mrazek faced 26 San Jose shots, stopping 24.

The Sharks (0-4) hit the road for the next four games. Their next contest is Tuesday at the New York Islanders, followed by a Thursday game with the New York Rangers. San Jose travels to New Jersey next Saturday and to Philadelphia next Sunday.
