That’s Amaury News and Commentary: 2022 World Series: No US-born Black Players – First time in 72 Years

2022 World Series: No US-born Black Players – First time in 72 Years

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

In 1947 Jackie Robinson’s first year in Major League Baseball, his team, the Brooklyn Dodgers faced the New York Yankees in the World Series. Since then, the 1950 match-up between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies has been the only World Series without US-born Black players.

Until this year when the Houston Astros face the Philadelphia Phillies. Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker, a black man born in the US says he is “deeply disturbed” there will be no US-born Black players taking part in this year’s World Series.

In 2022 the majority of players in MLB are white, while Latino players make up around 30-33% of all talent in the Major Leagues, and black players born in the US 6.8%. Dusty Baker has a reason to be deeply disturbed. In the NFL 70% of all players are black-US-born, while in the NBA is 73% of all players.

The NHL is predominantly white, by 97%, the other 3% is made of different ethnicity. Of that 3%, twenty-six players are black. However, twenty of the twenty-six black players in the NHL are from Canada and only 6 are from the US. Mike Grier the general manager of the San José Sharks, is the first Black General Manager in National Hockey League history.

In the MLS 25.6% are black players, but not all from the US, they come from 36 other countries and four Continents. This is the most racially balanced professional sports league in the United States. But it makes sense because Fútbol (called Soccer in the English-speaking world) is played in more countries than other sports.

Major League Baseball continues to spend a lot of money as well as developed many programs in inner-cities all over the country for African-American communities, Major League Baseball through its affiliates is trying. But the black youth continues to gravitate towards basketball and football and one of the main reasons is pure convenience. In basketball, you do not require a lot of equipment for multiple players.

All you need is a ball and a basket/hoop. You can play by yourself, one-on-one, or just a few friends up to 5 vs. 5. There are basketball courts in most high-density neighborhoods in the US. You do not need a lot of money for basketball equipment, elementary and high schools have basketball floors to play and kids take it early and develop much faster than in other sports. While baseball and football are much more complicated, they require several pieces of equipment, several players, and large places to play.

Kings remain winless drop fourth straight game to Grizzlies 125-110

The Memphis Grizzlies Ja Morant (12) gets a finger roll on a jumper for two against the Sacramento Kings Domantas Sobonis (10) at the Golden One Center in Sacramento on Thu Oct 27, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings (0-4) were back in action on Thursday night at Golden one Center. The Kings were set to take on the Memphis Grizzlies (4-1) as Ja Morant came to town. The Kings after struggling early in the season, we’re looking to change the tone. Kings fans would leave the arena disappointed as the Kings lost the game 125–110.

The game wasn’t a blowout by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a steady and slow defeat by most accounts. There wasn’t really any quarter or moment that the Kings lost the game. It was just a compilation throughout the game that ended up, leading to defeat.

In the first quarter of the Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead outscoring the Kings 32–28. The Kings offense didn’t to get off to a good start, and the defense didn’t find a rhythm early either.

In the second quarter it was more of the same. The Kings were outscored 31–28. The game didn’t get out of hand of the Kings were slowly falling behind. In the first half, the Kings got themselves into a 63 to 56 deficit. In the first half the Kings were led by De’Aaron Fox who had 16 points. The Kings needed to bounce back in the second half to win the game.

The third quarter echoed much of the first half of the Kings. The offense wasn’t terrible however, the defense could not get stops. The Kings would be out scored in the third quarter 31–27.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Kings would need to mount a come back if they hoped to get their first win of the season. Unfortunately for King’s fans, the fourth quarter was almost identical to the third. In the fourth quarter the Kings were out scored 31-27 and lost the game.

The Kings were led by De’Aaron Fox, who scored 27 points, followed by Harrison Barnes, who managed 20 points in the contest. The Memphis grizzlies were led by an unlikely figure Desmond Bane, who scored 31 points. Ja Morant the resident star of the Grizzlies had 22 points.

The Kings will need to return to the drawing board to figure out how to get their first win on Saturday.

Up Next: Kings will stay home to take on the Miami Heat at 3PM PST on Saturday.

Golden State Warrior guard Stephen Curry scored 33 points leading the Warriors on the top of the scoring leaderboard. Curry’s ten crucial points in the fourth quarter help keep the Warriors ahead. Curry also added seven assists and nine rebounds to his total in keeping the Warriors in the contest in the Warriors 123-110 win over the Miami Heat.

The Heat’s Tyler Herro tried as he might to defend Curry but to avail Curry just came loose on Herro including a move losing Herro and faded back and sank a three point shot with 5:23 remaining in the game to make it 108-100. Curry added some more at 3:15 moving past the Heat defense for a layup and at 2:40 hitting another three pointer, and then a long outside shot at 2:04 as the Warriors never looked back.

During the current four game homestand Curry has 30 or more points and Andrew Wiggins had 18 points and ten rebounds, and had a collection of three pointers five in all scoring 19 points for the night. Warriors Jordan Poole drove and got a pass around the Heat’s defender Bam Adebayo to teammate Ty Jerome who hit a three pointer to make it 100-92 with 9:36 left. Poole also added a jump shot at 8:07 to pull the Warriors with an eight point lead 102-94.

The Heat got scoring from Adebayo who led with 26 points, forward Jimmy Butler 27 points, and Max Strus 14 points, Kyle Lowery scored 12 points and eight assists. The Heat playing on back to back nights having played on Wednesday night in Portland getting a 119-98 win.

The Charlotte Hornets host the Warriors on Saturday night. The Hornets will have come off back to back nights having played in Miami and back to Charlotte to host Warriors for a 4:00pm tip.

Logan Couture’s 300th goal of career helps propel Sharks over Maple Leafs by final of 4-3 in OT

By Titus Wilkinson (@TitusWisme)

Credit to San Jose Sharks Twitter. The San Jose Sharks celebrate their overtime win against the Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

SAN JOSE– The San Jose Sharks took on the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night the Sharks picked up an overtime win 4-3 at the SAP Center on Thursday night.

The game couldn’t have started off better for the Sharks as Logan Couture on a breakdown in puck management by the Maple Leafs got a goal just 27 seconds in. The assists went to Matt Nieto and Alexander Barabonov as the Sharks as they’ve done many times this season got on the board first.

Feeling the momentum that first line continued to get chances as Nieto not too long after the goal streaked in and shot one wide.

Erik Kallgren the starting goalie for the Leafs had to be on his toes early in the game as the chances piled on.

Despite the early momentum the Leafs found a way to respond as David Kampf scored off a nice pass by Alexander Kerfoot and helped as well by Mitch Marner. It came at the 14:46 mark of the first and seemed to breathe new life into the Leafs.

Helping to further the Leafs continued pressure the Sharks took a too many men penalty and put a dangerous power play on the ice. The penalty kill would come through for the Sharks though the Leafs had plenty of good looks.

By the end of the first a shot count that originally favored the Sharks now favored the Leafs at 9-5.

The second period for the Sharks got off to a rocky start as Radim Simek got a penalty for tripping. The penalty kill that has been extremely good though for the Sharks continued to be as they killed it off.

Following that up would be the Maple Leafs though as they would take two penalties simultaneously to give the Sharks a five on three. With both T.J. Brodie and Pierre Engvall sitting in the box blood was in the water for the power play unit.

It would not take long for the power play unit to capitalize as Erik Karlsson gave it to Barabonov on a one touch who then feed it to Couture for the goal. Couture’s second goal came with still some time left on the five on three and so the Sharks remained on the power play.

The power play then struck again for the Sharks and at first it appeared to be Couture’s giving him the hat trick. However after further inspection the goal went to Timo Meier though by that time it was too late as many hats had already been thrown.

Meier commented on the delayed correction after the game, “Yea I mean sorry for all the people that threw the hats but you know you’d love to see Logan get a hat trick. But anyways were happy to win the game.”

With a 3-1 lead it seemed like everything was clicking in the second period for team teal. The Leafs actually ended up taking another penalty this time for delay of game but it was killed off this time by penalty kill.

In the dying moments of the second period though the Sharks gave up a four on two and the Leafs converted on the defensive blemish. This time Marner got the goal from Morgan Rielly and Alexander Kerfoot making it a 3-2 game off tic tac toe style play.

With the third period starting and the Sharks having a sour taste in their mouths they did not get off to a great start. As the penalty kill would be busy with a couple quick penalties.

On one of these penalties the power play for the Maple Leafs came through as Auston Matthews one timed an absolute bomb from the top of the slot. The assists going to Rielly and John Tavares on the goal that tied the game at three.

For the rest of the period the teams fought back and forth exchanging chances. The Maple Leafs though ended up with the more threatening looks as Kaapo Kahkonen had to be sharp making 22 saves.

The teams fought to a draw and so overtime would have to be played in front of the home crowd for the Sharks. Those same fans though had something to cheer about pretty quickly into the match.

Off a beautiful defensive play by Timo Meier on a pass he poked it away and spotted Erik Karlsson skating out of the zone. On a perfect pass he fead Karlsson and Erik did the rest as he went backhand forehand top shelf to end the game in OT at 4-3.

“It was nice the way it developed I think I just had to get going and trust Timo that he would get the puck there. I made up my mind fairly early and stuck to it and it went in,” Karlsson said postgame.

For the home crowd at SAP Center it was an exhilarating win and a great way to end the game.

The San Jose Sharks next game will be against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday at SAP Center for a 1:30pm faceoff.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: World Series Best team Houston vs. Hottest team Philadelphia

World Series: Best team Houston vs Hottest team Philadelphia

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

With all respect to the Los Aneles Dodgers, the Houston Astros are the best team in baseball this year. Does that mean they should win the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies? Hold on! Not necessarily. For a while I stopped making predictions in the World Series during the 1988 classic between the A’s and Dodgers.

We all know what happened, the Athletics were the very best, and the Dodgers did not matched ‘player by player’ with Tony LaRussa’s team. I was there with the A’s for the three consecutive series appearances and I thought the A’s should have won all three, they were that good, but they could only beat the Giants in 1989.

To predict a World Series is like to predict a hurricane; you can track it from the moment it becomes a hurricane and then you predict it is going to land in one place, and all of a sudden it changes course and goes where you never thought. That is my best analogy about predicting World Series. Remember the recent Hurricane Ian? All the experts in meteorology predicted it was going to hit the Tampa area, but it never did, it went inland miles to the south in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Houston has a better bullpen, better pitching and All-Star lineup, they won 106 games during the regular season. The Philadelphia Phillies won 87 games and they have last year’s NL MVP Bryce Harper. They know they’re good, but nobody expected them to be where they are today.

The 2022 World Series begins this Friday at Minute Maid Park, Houston. The Phillies are on a roll, they have great momentum and they have played with passion and great confidence, but that could be stopped tomorrow when they face Justin Verlander in the first game of the classic. Verlander will be named American League Cy Young Award winner.

Houston has the home field advantage. Games one and two at Houston, games three, four and five (if necessary in Philadelphia) games six and seven back at Minute Maid Park, Houston.

This is the best chance for Dusty Baker to win his first World Series. He lost to the LA Angels the 2002 as skipper for the Giants and took the Astros to the 2021 World Series only to lose to the Atlanta Braves. Now Dusty takes this Houston team (very similar to last season, minus Justin Verlander, who was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery) to this Fall Classic. Dusty is the ninth manager in history to win pennants in both leagues, he is the oldest manager in baseball and the one with the most wins (2,093) who has never won a World Series.

This is his best shot. Last time Houston visited Oakland I asked Dusty, “is this the best team you ever managed? He did not answer but paused and then grin and said it was “one of the best”. Dusty’s Astros won the AL West 16 games over second place Seattle.

The Philadelphia Phillies fired their veteran manager Joe Girardi early in the season when his team had a 22-29 record and replaced him with Rob Thomson who won the pennant and took them to the World Series.

Prediction: Astros have the experience and they have been here recently, but I would not be shocked if the Philadelphia Phillies upset the Astros. The Houston Astros will win in six (6) games.

The Phillies have to win one of the first two games at Houston, if they do not, the Astros could continue the ‘sweep express train’, they swept the Seattle Mariners in three games during the ALDS and swept the New York Yankees in four games to win their fourth American League pennant in six years.

Dusty’s team is undefeated during the postseason. Last time the Astros lost a game, was at the end of the regular season on September 30, when they lost to Tampa Bay. So here comes the World Series, no Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Braves, Red Sox or White Sox. It is the Astros and Phillies! Definitely not the dream series the FOX Network envisioned. That was Yankees vs. Dodgers, a coast-to-coast spectacular.

Houston has won one World Series, 2017 over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Houston’s win was tainted by MLB for stealing signs. A.J Hinch was the Astros manager. Phillies have won two World Series, 1980, 2008.

Mascots? Not even close, Philadelphia’s Phillie Phanatic has a huge lead over Astros Orbit.

The World Series will be exclusively on FOX Sports, which will call its 25th Fall Classic in its 27th season as the official network broadcaster of MLB.

Game 1: Friday, Oct. 28 in Houston at 8:03 p.m. ET on Fox

Game2: Saturday, Oct. 29 in Houston at 8:03 p.m. ET on Fox

Game 3: Monday, Oct. 31 in Philadelphia at 8:03 p.m. ET on Fox

Game 4: Tuesday, Nov. 1 in Philadelphia at 8:03 p.m. ET on Fox

Game 5 (if necessary): Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Philadelphia at 8:03 p.m. ET on Fox

Game 6 (if necessary): Friday, Nov. 4 in Houston at 8:03 p.m. ET on Fox

Reign send Barracuda to first loss of the season in 2-1 win

Barracuda forward Scott Reedy battles with Reign forward Taylor Ward at Tech CU Arena on Wednesday OCT 26, 2022. (San Jose Barracuda)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE — All good things come to an end, especially winning streaks.

The San Jose Barracuda suffered its first loss of the season as the Ontario Reign defeated the ‘Cuda 2-1 on Wednesday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose had their first lost after starting out a franchise best 4-0 to begin the 2022-23 season. Ontario has won five of its first six game to start its season.

Ontario (5-1-0-0) drew first blood just 54 seconds into the game. Alan Quine found Rasmus Kupari along the right wing and Kupari beat ‘Cuda goalie Strauss Mann with a wrist shot top shelf to the short side for his third goal of the season.

It was Mann’s first career AHL start. The 24-year-old former US Men’s National Team goalie settled down after giving up the first goal of the game and had a steady game to keep the ‘Cuda’s hope alive, giving them a chance to win the game.

“I was excited to play my first regular season game here,” said Mann when asked to evaluate his performance. “I’ve obviously been in San Jose for a while, been around the guys. It was good to get that game action, get that first out of the way. I think we played well enough to win, it’s just sometimes things don’t go your way.”

San Jose (4-1-0-0) spent most of the opening 20 killing penalties as they weren’t able to offer much of an offensive attack as Ontario outshot San Jose 12-9.

“I touched on that with the guys between the first and the second (period). It disrupts the flow (of the game) and I think if we want to have everybody going, we gotta stay out of the box,” Barracuda head coach John McCarthy said.

The Reign doubled its lead halfway through the second period. A failed clearing attempt by the Barracuda led to Quine finding Taylor Ward in the slot and Ward buried a wrist shot past Mann for his second goal of the season at the 9:51 mark.

San Jose cut the deficit in half with a power play goal late in the middle frame. Andrew Agozzino sent a rink wide pass over to Thomas Bordeleau and the rookie sniper ripped a one-time past Reign goalie Pheonix Copley for his team leading fourth goal of the season at the 16:12 mark.

It’s been good to see him (Bordeleau) get on the score sheet, that’s kind of his game. He’s coming along nicely; he’s been doing some good things (out on the ice). It’s been encouraging,” McCarthy said.

Despite pulling Mann with 90 seconds remaining in the third period for an extra attacker, Copley and the Reign held down the fort to escape with its second road win of the season.

Copley finished stopped 28 of the 29 saves to earn the victory. Mann made 26 saves on 28 in suffering his first professional loss.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-3 on the power play. Ontario was 0-for-6.

San Jose’s penalty kill is a perfect 24-for-24 to start the season.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Copley 2) Ward 3) Bordeleau

UP NEXT: San Jose continues its five-game homestand when they host the Tucson Roadrunners on Friday 10/28 at 7:00pm at Tech CU Arena.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: MLB Dropped the ball during this year’s 2022 MLB Summer Draft and 2021 All Star Game

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred addresses the media from MLB headquarters on Fri Sep 9, 2022. Manfred earlier this season moved the 2022 MLB Draft as well as the 2021 All Star Game out of Atlanta due to what Manfred termed voter suppression that would impede voters ability to cast votes in the State of Georgia. Manfred then moved both events out of Georgia. (AP News file photo)

MLB Dropped the ball during this year’s 2022 All Star Game

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The 2022 summer’s Major League Baseball Draft and the 2021 All-Star Game was not held in Atlanta, as it was originally scheduled. The withdrawal of the events that were to take place in July of this year was in response to Georgia’s enacted voting restrictions, which many in Washington, (including the President) called “Jim Crow in the 21st century. Because they say the legislation will disproportionately affect communities of color.

“I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft,” Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. said in a statement at the time. “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box.”

However, today we know that Major League Baseball overreacted. As of today with roughly two weeks before the national mid-term elections close to one million people have voted in Georgia, during the early voting, in person or via email. All polls regarding this matter are predicting that this mid-term election, coming in November 8th, will break all the voting records in the history of the State of Georgia. Because it is already on the way to a record.

Now we know, that the leadership of Major League Baseball made a big error, by removing the 2021 All Star Game from Atlanta to Denver, Colorado. Atlanta, Georgia prepared for this event yearns in advance. For Georgia it represented great lost of revenues, estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars to the Georgia economy, specially to the city of Atlanta among their local businesses that were poised to celebrate the mid-summer classic with thousands of tourist and baseball fans during the celebration of the All Star Week, which would have culminated with the All Star Game July 19, 2021.

The Commissioner of Baseball made a decision, that was more political than about baseball and it backfired on him big time. He wanted to be ‘politically correct’, overreacted and it blew up in his face. If Mr. Manfred ever had aspirations, once his reign as Commissioner expires to go into the political arena, this “move” probably killed those possibilities and he will have to live with it the rest of his life.
