Brewers sweep twin bill from Giants, 2-1 & 4-2

The Milwaukee Brewers made progress in their quest for a National League playoff berth with a doubleheader sweep of San Francisco Thursday at American Family Stadium.

The Brewers won the first game 2-1 and the second game 4-2. Milwaukee is 2 ½ games behind Philadelphia for the third NL Wild Card spot. The Giants are 10 games behind in the Wild Card race.

GAME 1

The Giants took a 1-0 lead on Mike Yastrzemski’s RBI double to right-center, driving in LaMonte Wade. Milwaukee went ahead to stay in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back run-scoring douibles by Christian Yelich and Hunter Renfroe.

Corbin Burnes (10-6) gave up a run on three hits over eight innings while striking out 14 without a walk. Devin Williams earned his 11th save with a scoreless ninth.

Jakob Junis (4-5), the second of three Giants pitchers, took the loss. Junis threw six innings with four strikeouts and two walks. He also gave up three hits. Tyler Rogers finished up with a scoreless eighth.

GAME 2

Milwaukee jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Mike Brosseau and Willy Adames both scored when Evan Longria committed an error on Hunter Renfroe’s infield grounder. Christian Yelich moved to second on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Keston Hiura.

The Brewers padded their lead in the sixth when Garrett Mitchell doubled to the gap in left-center, driving in Luis Urias.

San Francisco battled back with one run in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Mike Yastrzemski scored when Luis Gonzalez hit into a fielder’s choice. Joc Pederson’s solo home run in the eighth cut the Brewers lead to 4-2.

Both teams used a bullpen game. Freddy Peralta worked the first two innings for Milwaukee, followed by winning pitcher Peter Strzelecki (2-1), who struck out two in two scoreless innings. Taylor Rogers picked up his 31st save.

Giants opener Alex Young (0-1) gave up an earned run on one hit and two walks in 2/3 of an inning. Young was followed by Sean Hjelle, Dominic Leone and Luis Ortiz.

The Giants continue their road trip in Chicago with a weekend series against the Cubs. Carlos Rodon (12-7, 2.92) is on the mound for San Francisco on Friday, facing the Cubs’ Drew Smyly (5-8, 3.84).

#1 San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler had to choose between back up catchers Austin Wynns or Andrew Knapp to send to Triple A Sacramento with Joey Bart returning to the line up. Kapler went with Wynns because he had performed well and he’s done everything that Kapler has asked him to do.

#2 Kapler did manage Knapp when they were in Philadelphia and said Knapp’s work was commendable but Knapp didn’t have the local ties and wasn’t a switch hitter and that made the decision for which catcher to demote tough.

#3 Brandon Belt who had knee surgery last Saturday is in a wait and see situation. The team captain is hoping that he can get back in the line up at first base by next season if the rehab goes well enough. Belt has been on the club for many years including on the 2012 and 2014 World Championship teams.

#4 Giants outfielder Austin Slater tried his hand at color analysis on the Giants radio network with Giants play by play announcer Dave Fleming. Slater got a positive response when he did color during Giants trip to Los Angeles. Slater is currently on the IL so he has time to do some color.

#5 The Giants Friday open a three game series with the Chicago Cubs. The Giants and Cubs have not announced starters yet but with the Cubs 9.5 games and the Giants 9 games out of the wild card they will be flexible on choosing prospects to start.

#1 Michael, the San Francisco Giants just couldn’t hold the 2-0 lead and the Los Angeles Dodgers Max Muncy who bunted to the opposite side of the field of the Giants shift got on board and set up the home run hit by Justin Turner to take a 3-2 lead.

#2 Trea Turner doubled home Barnes to make it 4-3, then Muncy blew it open after a Freddie Freeman walk after eight innings the Dodgers had a four run 7-3 lead.

#3 The Giants got two runs in the top of the fifth inning and another run in the top of the seventh but just couldn’t manufacture more runs to get back in the ball game.

#4 The Giants play a doubleheader today in Milwaukee will Gabe Kapler use the call ups and rookies to see what he has on had in preparation for next season.

#5 In today’s front game the Giants will start Scott Alexander (0.00, 1.69) and for the Brewers Corbin Burnes (9-6, 3.02) a 1:10pm PDT first pitch. In the nightcap Giants manager Gabe Kapler has not announced a starter and for the Brewers Freddy Peralta (4-3, 3.56)

Our Turn: Dodgers late rally the difference in 7-3 win over the Giants

David Villar’s pair of home runs kept his late-season audition humming along, but the Dodgers had responses to Villar and the Giants in their 7-3 win on Wednesday afternoon.

The Giants 2-0 lead was eclipsed by Justin Turner’s three-run homer in the fifth off Alex Cobb. Then in the eighth, Trea Turner doubled, scoring Austin Barnes to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, Max Muncy’s three-run shot put the game away, and officially eliminated the Giants in the NL West race.

“I wanted to get the ball in the air on that one,” Muncy said. “We have the fastest guy in baseball (Trea Turner) on third base.”

The Giants suffered consecutive losses to the Dodgers after their five home run performance on Monday. That leaves them 28 1/2 games out of first place with 27 games remaining.

So what’s next? A trip to Milwaukee for a doubleheader with the Brewers on Thursday, followed by a weekend in Chicago with the Cubs.

While the Giants would love to catch fire and challenge the Brewers and Padres, who are holding the last, two playoff spots, just surviving the condensed schedule this week would be admirable. A revolving door roster, giving several guys opportunities to shine, will help ease the grind.

Currently at the top of that list are Villar and Lewis Brinson, after the pair both homered three times in the series.

“We’ve talked the last couple of days about how instrumental David can be to the future of this franchise,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “I see him as a guy who’s setting the stage for what might happen next season.”

Even more impressive than Villar’s 30 combined home runs at Triple-A Sacramento and San Francisco with the Giants is his enthusiasm. Clearly, he senses the opportunity to grab a regular role at first or third base with Wilmer Flores, Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria unlikely to return next season. Homering off Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning to give the Giants a lead just intensified his aspirations.

“He’s a historic pitcher,” Villar said. “But my job is to do exactly what I did. I got a mistake slider that was over the heart of the plate, and I know that I’m capable of driving the ball to the right side of the field.”

Villar doubled down in his next at-bat in the seventh, with a home run to the same area in the bleachers that tied the game, 3-3. The second shot victimized reliever Jeff Bruihl and his cut fastball.

Outside of Villar, the Giants’ offense did little with their other six base hits contributing to seven men left on base. Flores, Longoria and Austin Wynns each suffered 0 for 4 afternoons.

NOTES: Luis Torres is traveling with the club and expected to pitch on Thursday. Jakob Junis, who was the scheduled starter, Sean Hjelle and Scott Alexander are also likely to pitch with their roles to be determined. Bryce Johnson, the outfielder, was optioned to Sacramento.

Jaime Jarrin has been the Spanish Voice for the Los Angeles Dodgers for over six decades. He told me about this current 2022 season: “mi carrera como cronista radial terminará definitivamente cuando realize mi última transmición, ojalá sea en la Serie Mundial y terminar mi ciclo como empezé con los Dodgers ganando la Serie Mundial en 1959 contra los White Sox” Trans: “my career as a radio sportscaster will definitely come to an end when I broadcast the World Series and end my cycle which started when I began with the Dodgers winning the 1959 World Series over the White Sox”.

Did you ever envision such a lengthy and successful career when you first began? “nunca ni en sueño crei que recibiría tantas bendiciones en mi carrera, vine a este país a ampliar mis horizontes esperando únicamente ubicarme y seguir trabajando como todos los inmigrantes que llegan a este incomparable y generoso país”. Trans- “never even in a dream I believe I would received so many blessings in my career, I came to this country to broaden my horizons, only with the hope of settling down like all the immigrants that come to this incomparable and generous country”.

Jaime’s career began prior to his arrival to the United States. “mi carrera en radio comenzó en 1951 cuando a los 16 años de edad obtuve mi primer trabajo frente a un micrófono como periodista radial en la emisora HCJB La Voz de los Andes en mi nativa Quito, Ecuador. Trans- “my radio career began in 1951 at 16 years of age when I got my first job in front of a microphone as a radio journalist on HCJB La Voz de los Andes in my native, Quito, Ecuador”

When I asked him what he would miss after his retirement this year, “creo que extrañaré el juego del que vivo enamorado pero sobre todo extrañaré a los periodistas y colegas cuya amistad me han brindado haciendo más ligero el trabajo y sobre todo los viajes, ya estoy extrañando de sobremanera a mi hermano y consejero Vin Scully. El periodismo local y nacional tanto en inglés como en Español ha sido muy generoso especialmente en este año de despedida y mi gratitud eterna” Trans- I think I will miss the game that I am in-love with, but most of all I will miss the journalist and colleagues, most of all my brother and adviser Vin Scully. The local and national media in English as well as in Spanish, they have been very generous, especially during this year of my farewell; my eternal gratitude”.

What does Jaime Jarrín plans to do after his retirement? “seguiré afiliado a los Dodgers como un embajador por lo menos por dos años, pero mi carrera radial termina en este 2022”. Trans- “for at least the next two years I will continue my affiliation with the Dodgers as an ambassador, but my broadcast career ends this 2022”.

I have known Jaime Jarrín since the mid-1970’s. I have always had the utmost respect and admiration for Jaime. It is truly a pleasure to have known him for a lifetime, especially that World Series in 1977 (that is 45 years, for those scoring at home).

As recent as the late 1990’s I shared the booth broadcasting with Jaime for the Spanish radio networks in the US and Latinamerica. A consummate professional and truly a gentleman. I wish him the very best.

I have told Jaime many times, he was the luckiest man that I have known in broadcasting, why? He was fortunate enough to have spent his whole career with the LA Dodgers, a team that has always appreciated the value and importance of the Hispanic market.

Not now, when in LA Spanish is spoken as frequently as English and the Latinos are the largest minority in the country, with ‘at least’ 65 million people, but from the very beginning in the 1950’s, when it was not “politically correct” to speak Spanish.

The Dodgers are very close to clinching their divisional title. As of today they have a 94-42 record, best in the major leagues. Starting this Friday when the Dodgers open a weekend series in San Diego against the Padres, Jaime Jarrín will be calling all the games (like he always does) home and away on radio KTNQ 1020AM Los Angeles. MLB Baseball Hall of Fame announcer, Jaime Jarrín is now in the home stretch of his career.

#1 The Stanford Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee threw for two touchdowns to his favorite target wide receiver Michael Wilson as Stanford left no doubt about it with a 41-10 win over the Colgate Raiders last Saturday at Stanford Stadium.

#2 Head coach David Shaw very happy with McKee’s performance saying that’s the reason why he’s team captain and was the team leader even during the off season.

#3 McKee’s had an impressive line against Colgate Saturday throwing 22-27, 308 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

#4 The Cardinal had the game in hand in the first half, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter and scoring three times in the second quarter coming away with a 28-7 first half lead.

#5 The Cardinal got some great help from running back EJ Smith who ran for 118 yards on 11 carries scoring two touchdowns with the Cardinal hosting the USC Trojans this Sat Sep 11th a 4:30 pm PDT kick off at Stanford Stadium can the Cardinal run on the Trojan defense?

#1 The Chicago Bears are considering moving to Arlington Heights a suburb of the Windy City to get away from the cold winters of Lake Michigan. They plan to build a new stadium with enclosed roof which would be ready by the 2034 season.

#2 Jessica, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll insisted that the Seahawks are a ten win team. The Seahawks have a huge hole to fill after quarterback Russell Wilson left to play with the Denver Broncos.

#3 Jessica, former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Ried will face up to the charges of driving while intoxicated when he crashed into two cars while going to the Chiefs practice facility Feb 2021. Ried injured two children and one that has a brain injury. The family of Y.A. hopes Ried gets the maximum sentence as the case goes to the criminal phase of the trial.

#4 Los Angeles Rams defensive end Aaron Donald who was video taped swinging a Cincinnati Bengals helmet at Bengals players in the second of two joint practices. Donald was fell to the ground the helmet. Rams head coach Sean McVay said Donald was disciplined for the action but mention specifics.

#5 Jessica, talk about how important it is for the Pittsburgh Steelers to recognize former running back Franco Harris. Harris of course remembered for the famous Immaculate Reception in the 1972 AFC Championship against the Oakland Raiders when he caught a deflected pass in the air for an interception and ran it back for a touchdown to advance the Steel Curtain to the Super Bowl.

#1 Jerry the magical bat of the Atlanta Braves (86-51) Dansby Swanson was broke the 2-2 deadlock in the top of the sixth inning with a 397 foot blast to leftfield.

#2 Braves pitcher Spencer Strider who has 18 wins for the season and showed why after walking three batters in the first inning and giving up only one hit and two runs settled down for the rest of the game giving up only two hits to the Oakland A’s (50-87).

#3 The New York Mets who won today remained tied with the Braves for first place in the NL Wild Card standings. The Braves certainly showed today why their in first place by sweeping the A’s in a close two game series.

#4 A’s first baseman Stephen Vogt showed no intimidation of facing Strider getting two hits cracking a double in the bottom of the first inning scoring Vimeal Machin later in bottom of the eighth Seth Brown hit a solo home run to centerfield.

#5 The A’s concluded their two game series with the Braves in the Wednesday matinee and open a four game series with the Chicago White Sox righthander Dylan Cease (13-6, 2.13) who just missed a no hitter in his last outing and he’ll be opposed by the A’s JP Sears (2-1, 2.63) a 6:40 pm PDT.

Braves beat A’s 7-3 to sweep two-game series; Strider settles down A’s for 10th win of season

On a warm day at the Coliseum, the Atlanta Braves beat the A’s 7-3 to sweep the short two-game series. Atlanta won all four games played between the teams in 2022.

The A’s sent rookie Ken Waldrichuk to the hill to face the powerful Atlanta lineup. Waldichuk performed well. He allowed three runs and three hits. Unfortunately for him and the A’s, he served up two gopher balls. Vaughn Grissom hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Dansby Swanson’s blast in the sixth ended the game for Waldichuk. The Braves Spencer Strider had a rough first inning; Strider walked three and gave up a double to Stephen Vogt. The A’s Strider settled down and allowed just one more hit before exiting the game after the sixth.

The Oakland A’s, hoping to win and split the two-game series, drew first blood in the first inning. Braves’ starter Spencer Strider (9-4, 2.67 ERA) had trouble with his command in the first inning. Strider threw 35 pitches in the inning. Strider walked A’s leadoff hitter Vimael Machin. Seth Brown lined out to center for the first out. The DH, Sean Murphy, worked Strider for a walk to put two me on with one out. Stephen Vogt, playing first base, just missed a home run. The ball hit the wall in left-center, and Machin and Murphy scored. The A’s lead 2-0 after one.

Atlanta tied the game in the top of the fifth. Waldichuk hit the leadoff hitter, Travis d’Arnaud, with a pitch. Second baseman Vaughn Grissom blasted his fifth dinger of the season over the wall in right-center-field.

In the top of the sixth, with one out, Braves’ shortstop, Dansby Swanson, homered to give the Braves the advantage 3-2. A’s manager Mark Kotsay brought in righty Tyler Cyr to pitch. Cyr retired the next two hitters. The Braves led 3-2.

Atlanta broke it open in the top of the seventh. With one out, the Braves put three straight singles by Vaughn Grissom, Michael Harris, and Marcell Ozuna to plate the Braves’ fourth run. Former A’s outfielder, Robbie Grossman, doubled to drive in two more, making it a 6-2 game. The Braves onslaught continued. Norge Ruiz replaced Kirby Snead on the mound for Oakland. Ronald Acuna greeted him with a single to put Atlanta in the driver’s seat 7-2. The Braves batted around, sending nine men to the plate and putting four runs on the board.

Seth Brown homered in the bottom of the eighth with one out. The Braves hurlers shut out the A’s after scoring two runs in the first inning. It was the third hit of the game for Oakland. For Brown, it was his 21st of the year. Oakland trails 7-3 after eight complete.

The Braves bullpen held the A’s scoreless in the ninth to secure Atlanta’s 86th win.

Game Notes- With the loss, the A’s fall to 37 games below the .500 mark. Their record is 50-87. They have 25 games left to play. The Braves needed the win to remain tied with the New York Mets for first place in the NL East. Both teams are 86-51.

The A’s line was three runs, three hits, and no errors. Atlanta’s line was seven runs, ten hits, and no errors. Ken Waldrichuk was the losing pitcher. His line was five and 1/3rd innings allowing three runs and three hits. Strider improved to 10-4. Strider’s line was six innings, two runs, and two hits. Strider stuck out nine. The Braves pitchers recorded 15 strikeouts on Wednesday.

The A’s welcome the Chicago White Sox to the Coliseum for four games starting Thursday night. Lefty J.P Sears will pitch for Oakland. The ChiSox will counter with Dylan Cease. The game will start at 6:40 pm.

The time of the game was three hours and eight minutes. Five thousand three hundred thirty-two fans watched the A’s lose for the 87th time.
