By Barbara Mason

The San Francisco Giants (67-73) finished off their three game series with the Chicago Cubs (58-82) Sunday evening. Saturday the Giants offense came to life with 11 hits scoring five runs and winning game two 5-2.

Sunday San Francisco got more production at the plate again to not only win game three but also the series as they defeated the Cubs 4-2 at Wrigley Field.

The first run of the game came in the fourth inning when Thairo Estrada singled and J.D. Davis scored giving San Francisco a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning Chicago tied up the game 1-1. Rafael Ortega singled and Zach McKinstry scored on a San Francisco error.

The game remained tied into the seventh inning. Thairo Estrada, who was having an amazing offensive game, hit a solo home run in the inning to take back the lead for the Giants 2-1.

In the eighth inning more long balls for San Francisco. Wilmer Flores homered with Lewis Brinson on base extending their lead to 4-1. This was Flores’ 18th homer of the season. Chicago’s Seiya Suzuki homered in the eighth inning, a solo, but that would be it for the Cubs.

The Giants win their second in a row. They had eight hits in this game continuing to swing the bats very well.

The Giants will be back home for a three game series with the red-hot Atlanta Braves on Monday night. The Braves will be sending Spencer Strider (10-4, 2.69) going up against Giants starter Alex Cobb (5-6, 3.68) a 6:45 pm PDT first pitch at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

After tying the game in the first quarter 3-3 the Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Chargers battled throughout the contest on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. It had been nine years since Raiders quarterback Derek Carr and wide receiver Devante Adams had played together since college.

Carr hit Adams for an 11 yard pass on the opening drive of the game. It turned out that Adams would be Carr’s favorite target all afternoon throwing to Adams for five completions. Despite Carr and Adams hooking up the Raiders defense couldn’t hold the line in the second quarter as the Chargers scored 14 points.

“We did some good things,” Carr said. “There’s also some things that him and I, we were just talking about in the locker room, the way I see it, the way he sees it, and we’re trying to make that better. So yeah, we had production, but I think that we can be better, and so does he.”

It was a great afternoon for Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had who went 26-34 threw for three touchdowns for 279 yards throwing to wide receivers DeAndre Carter and Gerald Everett.

The Raiders have their work cut out for them as they return to Las Vegas on Sun Sep 18th at Allegiant Stadium to host the Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murray. The Cardinals have more a will to win after they got beat 44-21 by quarterback Pat Mahomes and the Kansas Chiefs in Glendale. Murray went 22-34, 193 yards and two touchdowns and was relieved by back up quarterback Trace McSorley after the game became lopsided.

Kotsay, Pinder, A’s take frustrations out on Sox 10-3; Oakland snaps 5 game loss streak

Oakland A’s Tony Kemp thanks the good Lord after smacking a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning against the Chicago White Sox at Oakland Coliseum (AP News photo)

By Morris Phillips and Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND–As the Oakland A’s honored former pitcher Dave Stewart at the Oakland Coliseum retiring his number 34. The A’s had a six run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning that led to their 10-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. The win snapped the A’s five game losing skid.

The A’s got down to some serious business after their manager Mark Kotsay and right fielder Chad Pinder argued that a fly ball to the leftfield chalk line was ruled foul in the last of the first.

It was then when all the excitement took place as Pinder hit a fly that hit right on the leftfield chalk line that would have been an RBI double but was called a foul ball by third base umpire Edwin Moscoso. A’s manager Mark Kotsay wanted a review and the call stood.

At the end of the inning Pinder instead of going out to rightfield got into an argument with Moscoso and was thrown out and had to be restrained by third baseman Vimeal Machin as Pinder was trying to get at Moscoso then Kotsay got in a few words but didn’t get ejected.

Later the A’s new rightfielder Ramon Laureano hit a two run home run and Machin hit a two run double in the bottom of the fifth as the A’s wound scoring six runs in that inning. Laureano would end up hitting two home runs for the day. The rally put the A’s on top 7-2 and gave A’s starter Cole Irvin some cushion. The A’s have now used a total of 60 players since opening day back in March and have used 31 rookie position players and 18 rookie pitchers an A’s franchise record.

The White Sox had been running hot they took the first three games of this four game series from the A’s and had had a four game winning streak snapped and had suffered their third loss in 12 games. The Sox are in hot pursuit in the AL Wild Card race just behind the Cleveland Guardians.

The A’s now open a two game series against the Texas Rangers at the Ballpark in Arlington on Tuesday night and will start Ken Waldichuk (0-1, 3.60) and for the Rangers Cole Ragans (0-2, 3.80) a 5:05pm PDT first pitch.

Aces Win Game One In Championship Series Over Relentless Suns 67-64

Aces Win Game One In Championship Series Over Relentless Suns 67-64

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun 67-64 at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas to take a 1-0 series lead in their quest for their first championship. They will played the upset-minded Sun who mounted a 4th quarter rally beating the defending champion Chicago Sky 72-63 in game five of their series last Thursday.

The Aces have inarguably the best starting lineup in the WNBA and in her first year as head coach the team boasts the incomparable leadership of Becky Hammond.

The Sun took on the likes of A’ja Wilson (WNBA MVP for a second year), Kelsey Plum (all-time leading scorer in division I history) and finally Jackie Young ( the league’s most improved player). They have an invaluable host of players that will support them throughout this series.

Game 1 Sunday recap: Las Vegas got off to a quick start and at one time the Aces held a 12 point lead but the Sun kept plugging away and at the half had taken a 38-34 lead in an unexpected turnaround. The Sun won the second quarter 21-9 in a punishing effort.

The Sun continued to battle and held the lead through most of the third quarter. In the final three minutes of the quarter the Aces began to turn it around and led after three 55-53.

The Sun came into this game with upset on their mind and they were sure playing like it trailing in the fourth quarter but within striking distance. With under three minutes left in the game Las Vegas created a little distance leading 58-66. With 34 seconds left on the clock, the Aces held a slim 67-64 lead. That advantage would hold and Las Vegas had won the first game of the series.

Much of the success in this game went to the Aces defense fighting throughout the game against a tenacious Sun squad. Alyssa Thomas finished with 19 points for the Sun and Jonquel Jones had 15 but Connecticut came up just short in a hard fought battle that went right down to the wire.

A’ja Wilson finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds another double double for her. Chelsea Gray had 21 points and Jackie Young had 11. It was a slow night for Kelsey Plum who only had six points but look for her to pick things up throughout the series.

Game Two will be in Las Vegas on Tuesday with tipoff at 6:00 PM on ESPN.

49ers stumble to Bears 19-10 in wet, dreary game

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (5) is outnumbered and tackled in first half action by the Chicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith (58) and defensive lineman Dominique Robinson (91) at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sun Sep 11, 2022 (AP News photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

A monsoon of mother nature and a tight lipped defense spoiled the season opener for the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chicago Bears took advantage of the weather and costly turnovers as they upset the the scarlet and gold 19-10 on a miserable wet Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.

On a day where the heavens opened up and were relentless, the field made things difficult for both teams dealing with a drenched field. Penalties and turnovers were detrimental to San Francisco’s ability to overcome the weather.

San Francisco’s defense was dominant in the first half as they forced Justin Fields and the Bears offense into numerous three and outs.

Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Fields on the Bears second possession as he read the deep ball over the middle where Fields overthrew his receiver.

The 49ers (0-1) drew first blood in the second quarter. Hybrid receiver-back Deebo Samuel concluded a seven play, 52-yard drive when he rushed for a six-yards touchdown on an end around handoff from quarterback Tre Lance.

Samuel had fumbled the ball on the 49ers first drive that was the beginning of the missed opportunities San Francisco experienced throughout the game.

Chicago (1-0) tried for a field goal just before halftime but were flagged when they used a towel on the field to try sop up some of the water, which is illegal to do. The 15-yard penalty took them out of field goal range and then ended up punting to end the half.

San Francisco started the second half off with a promising drive. However, it stalled at the Bears 18-yard line as Lance was sacked on third down and they had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Robbie Gould instead of being able to double its lead.

“You don’t win a lot of games when you miss those opportunities to put a game away. Not to take anything away from them (Chicago), I’m disappointed in some of the silly mistakes we did to ourselves,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game.

The second half was a flip of the script. Chicago’s defense became the dominating force and didn’t allow San Francisco to score the rest of the game.

The Bears’ offense came alive late in the third quarter. Fields made a play where he scrambled out of the pocket to the right then to the left before finding a wide open Dante Pettis down the right sideline. Pettis raced in the rest of the way for a 51-yard touchdown reception to cut the lead to 10-7.

Chicago gained its first lead early in the fourth quarters. Fields led a 10 play 84-yard drive when he found Equanimeous St. Brown for an 18-yard touchdown with 12:45 remaining. Kicker Cairo Santos missed the extra point as the Bears led 13-10.

Lance was intercepted by Eddie Jackson on the next 49ers’ possession when he telegraphed a pass over the middle intended for Jauan Jennnings. Jackson returned the ball 26 yards to the 49ers 21 yard line.

Chicago cashed in the turnover when Khalil Herbert rushed for a three-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach despite Santos second missed extra point.

“Whenever you let a team hang around, it’s not gonna be good,” offensive tackle Trent Williams said.

It was a difficult game for Lance, who finished 13 of 28 for 164 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Lance led the team in rushing with 54 yards on 13 carries. His best carry was on a 3rd and 13 where he rushed for 13 yards to get the first down.

Jennings led San Francisco in receiving with four catches for 62 yards. Both Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk only had two catches a piece respectively.

Field finished the game 8 of 17 for 121 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 28 yards on the ground.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 8-for-17 on third down conversions. Chicago was 5-for-14.

INJURY UPDATE: San Francisco suffered two keys injuries during the game. Running back Elijah Mitchell left the game in the first half with a knee injury. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter and also didn’t return. Both player will be evaluated on Monday.

UP NEXT: San Francisco returns to Santa Clara for their home opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday 9/18 at 1:05pm at Levi’s Stadium.

10th Ranked USC Trojans Attack the Farm and Manhandle Stanford Cardinal in Last Conference Visit 41-28

USC quarterback Caleb Williams (13) runs for some daylight as defensive edge player Stephen Herron (15) gives chase at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto on Sat Sep 10, 2022 (AP News photo)

STANFORD, Calf.–The #10  “Men of Troy” from the University of Southern California did not need a Trojan Horse to invade Stanford Stadium, as they say Goodbye in dominating fashion, 41-28 over the Cardinal in front of a national television audience, 43, 813 fans and a few Stanford sports legends

As in the Cardinal game against Colgate, there was a quick score within the first minutes of play; however, this time it was the now conference foe getting into the endzone.  Stanford’s junior captain quarterback, Tanner McKee, threw an interception to USC’s junior free safety, Max Williams.

The Trojans turned that gift into a touchdown in less than three minutes of game play, on a five-yard touchdown pass by sophomore sensation, quarterback, Caleb Williams, to freshman tight end, Lake McKee.

Nearly five minute later, Stanford and the Cardinal faithful thought the game was all tied up at 7, but the TD was overturned after review.  After a defensive penalty on Stanford’s field goal attempt, the Cardinal brought the offense back on the field for a fourth down attempt to score a tying touchdown.  That turned into a disastrous scenario, as McKee threw another interception in the endzone.

“So two tipped interceptions, both in scoring position, and then fumbled the ball inside the 5 yard line. I mean, that’s the ballgame. You don’t come back from that against a good football team. You’re taking away 21 points. At the minimum those are two touchdowns inside the 5 yard line and a field goal; at minimum it’s 17 points.”  Said Stanford Head Coach David Shaw.

“Now we could’ve put 17 points on the board in the first half, a different ballgame.  So those are momentum killers, and those are the fastest way to lose a football game is to turn the ball over,” added Shaw.

USC parlayed that miscue into another touchdown pass by their quarterback, this time on a 22-yard connection to junior wide receiver Jordan Addison.

After going down 14-0, still in the first quarter, Stanford gets on the scoreboard, on a 3-yard touchdown pass by McKee to junior running back, E.J. Smith, with less than a minute left in the initial quarter.

That was too much time for the Trojans, as they scored on a 75-yard bomb from Williams to Jordan Addison, for the second time.  After one, 21-7 USC.

The second stanza opened on a downer for the Cardinal, because EJ Williams fumbled nearly three minutes into the quarter, and USC capitalized on this turnover too.  Caleb Williams threw his fourth touchdown, this one to sophomore receiver, Mario Williams.

EJ Smith scampered into the endzone, redeeming himself, and cutting the Trojans lead in half, 28-14.

USC was not finished scoring, when Trojans’ senior running back, Travis Dye, ran into the endzone on a 26-yard carry, with about two and half minutes to go in the half.  After 30 minutes, 35-14 Trojans.

The third quarter had less action, with the only scoring coming from Southern Cal’s freshman place kicker, Denis Lynch, converting 2/3 of his attempts, adding six more points to the Trojans tally.  41-14, USC.

The final fourth of the game, Stanford scored twice (two 2-yard TD’s), by junior Casey Filkins and McKee with a QB sneak.

After the final whistle, the Trojans from the South were the victors, with a 13-point margin over the Cardinal of the North. USC 41, Stanford 28.

Cardinal Running back E.J. Williams didn’t have the explosive game he had last week, but did gain 88 rushing yards and 26 receiving, while scoring a touchdown in each format; however, he fumbled twice in crucial possessions.  QB Tanner McKee threw for 220 yard and scored on a passing TD and rushing TD, but gave the opponent two interceptions.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams dominated the game with gaudy numbers: 341 passing yards and 4 touchdown tosses.  His favorite target was receiver Jordan Addison 8(7) targets for 172 yards and two touchdowns

Stanford has a bye next week, while USC hosts Fresno State.

USC and UCLA will be leaving the PAC 12 for the Big !0, so this marks the last visit for the Trojans on the Farm and/or Stanford Stadium as a member of the Pacific 12 Conference.  A great deal of history was halted today, although they may still meet in non-conference games.

Cardinal greats, such as former quarterback, Andrew Luck, current Women’s basketball coach, Tara VanDerveer and former forward, Nneka Ogwumike were honored during the game.

Luck is going into the College Football Hall of Fame, while Ogwumike and VanDerveer are inducted into Stanford University Athletics Hall of Fame.
