The visiting New York Knicks used their NBA best defense to stun the Warriors 119-104 Thursday night at the Chase Center. The Warriors, playing their third game in four nights, could not get their offense working against New York.

The Knicks, the lowest-scoring team in the NBA with about 101 points per game, scored 40 points in the first quarter. The Warriors scored 31 but trailed by nine after the first 12 minutes. The Warriors had to scramble to put points on the board as New York’s defense was too tough to crack.

The Warriors second unit started the second quarter. Eric Paschall tallied the Warriors first eight points. The Warriors’ defense was able to slow down the Knicks’ offense. Slowly, Golden State clawed their way back.

The Knicks led 55-50. Steph Curry knocked down a three and followed by a two-point bucket to tie the game at 55. The Warriors didn’t know at the time that it would be the closest they would come to take the lead.

New York scored the next six points to lead 61-55 with 1:04 left in the first half. With the Warriors on defense, the referees called a technical foul on Draymond Green. Green was not near anyone.

It was Draymond’s second technical, and by NBA rules, he had to leave the game. The Warriors learned that Green was yelling at James Wiseman and not the referee. Even though it was a mistake, Draymond was finished for the night.

The Warriors hoped they could get the offense going in the second half without him. The Warriors missed his presence as they looked out of sync. The Knicks were able to cruise to victory.

The Knicks won the third quarter 26-19. Curry did not score in the quarter. New York increased the lead to sixteen in the fourth quarter. They led 97-81. The Warriors could not catch up. The Knicks win 119-104.

Game Notes and Stats: The Knicks, as mentioned above, are the lowest-scoring team in the NBA. They are the best team in the NBA as they allow just 102.7 points per game against them. They have the best three-point defense in the league, too.

The Warriors were nine-for 38 from behind the three-point arc. The referees had their whistles blowing all night. They called the teams for 55 fouls. The Knicks committed 29 and the Warriors 26. The Knicks had 41 free throws from the line and the Warriors 39.

Curry led the Warriors with 30 points. Andrew Wiggins had 17, James Wiseman 15, Kelly Oubre, Jr. 7, Eric Paschall 12. Draymond tallied three points and had eight assists. He has one of the best basketball IQs in the game. Once he left, the Warriors offense fell by the wayside.

All five Knicks’ starters were in double figures. R.J. Barrett had a career-high 28 points. Julius Randle missed a triple-double. Randle had 16 points, 17 rebounds, and nine assists. Mitchell Robinson had 18 points and eight rebounds. Reggie Bullock, who averages 28% on three-point shots, connected on four threes. Elfrid Payton had 15. Former Warrior, Alec Burks, had 11 in helping the Knicks defeat his old club.

With the loss, the Warriors are 8-7 for the year. The Knicks are now 8-8.

The Warriors meet the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City Saturday afternoon. The game will start at 2 pm.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Baseball’s Largest Minority Keeps Growing

Former Anaheim Angel Vladimir Guerrero who signed with the Angels in 2004 and later went into the Hall of Fame in 2018 was one of the big named Hispanics in MLB joining  the largest minority group in Major League Baseball (pinterest.com file photo)

Baseball’s Largest Minority Keeps Growing

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The most recent percentage of Hispanic/Latino players in Major League Baseball was 32 percent, African-Americans 7.7 percent (by the way in 1981 an 18.7 percent of MLB players were African Americans) African-American players are the biggest drop in baseball demographics during the last 40 years.

Other demographics of players, Asian/other 2.9 percent, with 57.7 percent white majority. It is now impossible for teams to ignore the Hispanic market. The fact remains that Hispanics are one huge consumer block. According to the Selig Center for Economic Growth (no relation to Bud Selig, ex baseball commissioner) study at the University of Georgia, Hispanic consumers in the US control a total of $ 1.5 trillion in buying power, which is up 212% this decade.

Baseball is a natural sport for Hispanics. Many Latin American countries, for over a century and some (in the Caribbean) for over a century and a half, have been playing baseball. Baseball is a summer game and most countries in Latin America are tropical countries, perfect for playing the greatest game on earth, 365 days a year.

Players from Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, México, Colombia, Panamá, Belize, Brazil, Curacao, Aruba, Honduras, Nicaragua, Jamaica and other countries have played and are playing in major league baseball. There were no Minor Leagues in 2020, where usually the percentage of Hispanic players is even higher than in MLB.

Arturo (Artie) Moreno owner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is the one Hispanic owner currently in MLB. Moreno’s first big move right after he bought the Angels in 2004 from Disney Corporation was to sign Dominican Republic superstar Vladimir Guerrero, who went on and retired and in 2018 was inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Guerrero was the first Latino player in the Hall of Fame for the Angels. He went into Cooperstown with an Angel’s uniform. Arte understood the huge Hispanic LA market, one of the reasons he fought in the courts and won to change the name of his team from Anaheim Angels, to Los Angeles Angels.

Although there are only 26 miles of distance apart via Interstate I-5, from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles to Angels Stadium in Anaheim. The Los Angeles area Hispanic media market is the largest in the United States. The Bay Area is among top ten in the country.

When Rob Manfred became the tenth Commissioner in baseball in 2015 he not only spoke about his plans to “faster play” in the game among his changes, Manfred also said that with Digital media and the Hispanic Market, they can grow baseball.

There still talk about expansion to 32 teams and various locations have been on the table. Manfred have said that while US locations are considered, also places like México City are frequently in the conversation and with over 21 million people is one of the most populous cities in the world.

2020 changed a lot of things; obviously the pandemic was the biggest story. And while baseball can plan for expansion, sometimes things change and you cannot accomplish those plans. Ex-heavyweight champion Mike Tyson once said “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”.

Teams lost hundreds of millions of dollars during a short season, with no fans in the stands, teams revenues took it in the mouth. MLB expansion last happened in 1998 when Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks were born to what it is today a 30-team league.

Expansion might not be in the front burner as baseball tries to regroup during this pandemic as we began 2021. But still an interesting topic, and I do not think it is likely to happen until the stadium situations in Oakland and Tampa are resolved, and only God knows how long that will take.

The Hispanic market will continue to grow all across the country regardless of expansion or no expansion in major league baseball. The US Census was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic during the fall of 2020.

That is the reason the final statistics were not made public. A pandemic also changes a Census, because (among other logistics) many people need to be reached at home, in other words, census workers have to knock on doors, and that was not considered safe this time.

The growth of the Hispanic population in the country is important as well for all other professional leagues, like the NBA,NFL,NHL and MLS. However, because of it’s history-longevity and tradition, MLB seems to be the one league more inter-twain with this growing demographic.

Spring Training opens in less than a month We will see what happens this 2021,MLB wants a full Spring Training and 162 game schedule/ Will they play all games, some games, all fans (probably some fans) and who knows what else will develop. There were really no experts last year when it came to covid-19, even experts said one thing and then a month later said the complete opposite. Baseball could have shorten the games, the schedule, but this virus still very much the real wild-card.

Stay well and stay tuned.

San Jose State unable to get first conference win after 67-51 loss to New Mexico

By Ana Kieu

The San Jose State men’s basketball team looked to avoid a five-game losing streak with a win over the New Mexico Lobos at Burns Arena, the home of the Dixie State Trailblazers, on Thursday. Neither team had a conference win prior to tipoff, but things changed at the buzzer — just not in favor of the Spartans. The Spartans lost to the Lobos 67-51 in St. George, Utah.

The Spartans’ starting lineup stayed the same. Omari Moore, Richard Washington, Jalen Dalcourt, Nate Lacewell and Ralph Agee took the court to play the sport they love. As of January 20, Washington is ranked the nation’s No. 1 top scoring small forward in the NCAA.

The Lobos opened the scoring in the first half. Kurt Wegscheider made a jumper to make it a 2-0 game at 18:32. Just 27 seconds later, the Spartans tied the game 2-2 when Richard Washington made a layup.
But New Mexico piled on the points and went on a 10-4 for a 9-point lead, 21-19, with 7:04 left.

As if things weren’t bad enough, New Mexico took advantage of seven Spartan turnovers for a 10-point lead, 27-17, with 3:49 left. As a result, Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau called a timeout to give his team time to regroup. While the Spartans showed some glimpses of hope in Sebastian Mendoza’s layup and Caleb Simmons’ free throws, the Lobos kept a 10-point lead, 31-21, at the end of the first half.

The Spartans shot just 8 of 23 from the field in the first half, and to add insult to injury, Richard Washington didn’t return for the second half. Washington took an apparent shot to the face during the first half.

It took Valdir Manuel just 20 seconds into the second half to score against the Spartans. Manuel gave the Lobos a 33-21 lead with a jumper. Jalen Dalcourt responded with a fast-break layup to cut the deficit to 10, 33-23, at 19:14.

At one point, New Mexico didn’t score for three minutes. Ralph Agee made a layup to pull the Spartans within nine, 50-41, with 8:08 left. The Spartans had a chance to correct their mistakes and bounce back, but the Lobo offense was on fire. Makuach Maluach finished with 25 points and six rebounds for the Lobos.

The Spartans wrapped up the second half scoring, but it was too little, too late. Jalen Dalcourt made a fast-break 3-pointer to pull within 16, 67-51, with 1:02 left in regulation. Makuach Maluach made a steal, the Lobos dribbled out the clock, and the Spartans lost 67-51. San Jose State fell to 2-11, 0-9 Mountain West. Ralph Agee led the Spartans with 14 points.

Meanwhile, the Lobos picked up their first conference win of the season. New Mexico improved to 5-8, 1-8 Mountain West.

The Spartans and Lobos face off again on Saturday, January 23 at 12 pm PT.

Sacramento Kings game wrap: Oh why? Can’t anyone stop Kawhi? Clippers run over Kings 115-96

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Wednesday night. The Kings season thus far has been very up and down. There has been times of success and times of failure. Lately, it has been mostly failure and failed again they did this time at Staples Center to the Los Angeles Clippers 115-96.

The simplest way to put it is that the Kings are struggling. They have not been able to play any type of meaningful defense throughout the course of the game. The offense has been fine for the most part, but the opponents are scoring too easily and in too great of numbers of numbers for the Kings to overcome. The Kings were looking to get back in the win column on Wednesday night against the Clippers.

However, before we take you to the results of Wednesday’s game, let’s talk about the game on Sunday night. On Sunday, De’Aaron Fox had a sensational day managing to score 43 points to lead the Kings. Unfortunately, the Kings allowed the Pelicans to score 127 points and the Kings lost 127-123.

In the first half of Wednesday’s game, the Kings kept pace with the Clippers. They managed to  outscored the Clippers 29-25 in the first quarter. It was a positive sign for the Kings who had been destroyed by the Clippers last week when they played 138-100. In the second quarter the Kings were outscored 36-27.

It was a downward trend for the Kings headed into halftime but they could still right the ship. De’Aaron Fox had 17 points in the first half continuing his dominating performance from Sunday.
In the second half, the Kings offense completely disappeared. The only managed to score 40 points in the second half with 19 of those coming in the third and 21 in the fourth.

Meanwhile, the Clippers scored 34 points in the third and 20 in the fourth. The Kings once again melted down in the second half and couldn’t stop the bleeding. De’Aaron Fox scored 25 points in the game just behind Kawhi Leonard who had 32.

The Kings will look to Friday to turn the tide on the season.

Up next: The Kings will take on the New York Knicks on Friday night at 7 PM PST in Sacramento.

Warriors rout Spurs 121-99; Spurs have lost three of last nine games

San Antonio Spurs point guard Dejounte Murray (5) drives on the Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry (30) on Wed Jan 20, 2021 in San Antonio (@FrostBank/#GoSpursGo photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors, coming off a thrilling 115-113 win over the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, blew away the visiting San Antonio Spurs Wednesday night 121-99.

The San Antonio coach, Greg Popovich, now in his 25th year as the man in charge, was facing his pupil. Warrior coach Steve Kerr once again. Wednesday’s game was the 20th time the two coaches, mentor, and pupil squared off. Popovich led 10-9 in the games between the two coaches. The series is now tied at ten each.

The Warriors owned the first half. Steph Curry and Draymond Green led the young Warriors to a 64-45 advantage at halftime. They played the best first 24 minutes of the season in the first half. They never trailed in the game.

They won the first quarter 36-24. The Spurs opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run. San Antonio closed to within five 43-38. It was at this point, the Warrior offense got rolling again as they went on a 16-0 run to lead 59-38.

Curry paced the team with 20 points. Three other starters, Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Oubre, Jr., and James Wiseman, were all in double figures. The Warriors moved the ball well and attacked the basket. They played solid defense and contested San Antonio’s three-point shots. The Warriors shot 53.5% from the floor and held San Antonio to 32.7%. The Warriors made eight three in 16 attempts. San Antonio connected on three threes in 21 tries.

In the third quarter, San Antonio was not able to cut into the Warriors 19 point lead. They started to make a move when they were able to force two Warrior turnovers into four points. The Warriors answered. The Warriors maintained the 19 point advantage 90-71 at the end of three periods.

The Warriors’ second unit started the fourth quarter. Kelly Oubre and Andrew Wiggins were on the floor with Eric Paschall, Brad Wanamaker, and Damion Lee. The Warriors put the game out of reach when Wiggins hit two threes, followed by a Brad Wanamaker three to lead 110-86. The Warriors coasted the rest of the way to a comfortable 121-99 victory.

Game Notes and stats: Curry led the team with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Rookie James Wiseman played the best game as a Warrior Wednesday night. Wiseman was on the floor for 25 minutes of action. He was eight-for 11 from the floor and ended with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Andrew Wiggins had 18, Oubre 16, and Draymond Green nine. Eric Paschall had seven. Jordan Poole knocked down three threes to finish with nine.

DeJounte Murray led the Spurs with 22. DeMar DeRozan had 15, Keldon Johnson 12, Rudy Gay 11. LaMarcus Aldridge was held to four points.

The Warriors shot 50.5% from the floor. They made 15 threes. The Spurs shot 37.6 from the floor and made four threes in 34 attempts. The Warriors outrebounded the Spurs 65-51. For the second game in a row, the Warriors recorded 31 assists that indicated they were moving the ball well and finding the open man.

The Warriors improved to 8-6 for the season. San Antonio is now 8-7.

The Warriors host the New York Knicks Thursday night at the Chase Center. The Knicks, coached by Tom Thibodeau, are 6-7 for the season and play well on defense. Expect the Knicks to double team Curry early in the game. The game will start at 6 pm.

Sharks Win 2-1 in Shootout Against Blues

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks won 2-1 against the St. Louis Blues in a shootout Wednesday. The Sharks got a regulation goal from Marcus Sorensen and the shootout winner from Tomas Hertl. Martin Jones made 22 saves for the win. The lone Blues goal came from Brayden Schenn and their goaltender, Jordan Binnington, made 37 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner talked about the improvements he saw in his team’s game:

“I thought our turnover rate was better, I thought our wall play was better, our possession time I think was a little better. And line changes, as crazy as that sounds, as simple as that sounds, I thought we did a better job of, you know, our shift length and changing and just all the fundamentals that we’ve been talking about.”

Boughner also pointed to how the team’s third and fourth lines helped in the win, beyond scoring the Sharks’ only regulation goal: “I believe the third and fourth line created some of our best o-zone shifts tonight when we needed it, just at the right time. They jumped over the boards and they played a little bit of a blue-collar style game which was perfect for us.”

The teams traded penalties in the first period but ended with no score. The Sharks had two penlaties to kill and the Blues had three. The shots were close, at 10-9 St. Louis.

The Blues scored first, at 4:27 of the second period. With the Sharks on a power play, Jordan Kyrou brought the puck through the neutral zone with speed before running into the Sharks defense. He held on to the puck until Brent Burns made some contact, knocking the puck loose. From there, Torey Krug and Brayden Schenn got it to the net and Schenn put it into the top corner. Assists went to Kyrou and Krug.

The Sharks tied it up with just over two minutes left in the second. Marcus Sorensen pushed the puck deep into Blues territory before gathering it up and sending it back up to Burns on the blue line. Mario Ferraro took a shot that touched Matt Nieto’s stick and trickled wide. Sorensen was right there to knock it in. Assists went to Nieto and Ferraro.

The shot count was close again in the second period, at 11-10 Sharks. The game remained scoreless after that. The Sharks had one third period power play, and killed two penalties. In all, the Sharks out-shot the Blues 17-4 in the final period.

After the game, Logan Couture talked about the third period: “I think in the third period, we played the style of hockey that we want to play. Obviously throughout the game there were a lot of penalties back and forth and it’s tough to get a flow going. But I liked our third period for sure.”

The Sharks seemed to score in the final 11 seconds of OT, but it was called back for incidental contact with the goaltender.

The shootout went an extra round as Martin Jones faced David Perron, Ryan O’Reilly, Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou without letting in a goal. Binnington faced Ryan Donato, Logan Couture and Kevin Labanc before tomas Hertl’s shot got by him.

The Sharks next play on Friday in Minnesota against the Wild at 5:00 PM PT.
