The San Jose Sharks won 5-3 against the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul Sunday. Goals came from Ryan Donato, Evander Kane, Noah Gregor, Brent Burns and Matt Nieto. Martin Jones made 26 saves in the win. Wild goals came from Nick Bjugstad, Zach Parise and Kevin Fiala. Kaapo Kahkonen made 31 saves in the loss.

The game-winner from Brent Burns was a spectacular feat in itself, but it also came at the perfect time. Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said, of the goal:

“At that point in the game we were just, you know, we were taking on a little water, we had some kills in the third period. At that point in time you’re trying to maintain at least the point and trying to win it in overtime. You know, if you get a break, great. But guys like that, elite players, they find ways to make huge differences in the game and that’s exactly what Burnzie did. We needed that.”

Boughner made some changes before Sunday’s game. Forward Timo Meier moved down to the third line from the second line, to play with Dylan Gambrell and Noah Gregor. John Leonard came back into the lineup to play in Meier’s spot with Tomas Hertl and Evander Kane. The defensive pairs were also adjusted, with Mario Ferraro playing with Erik Karlsson and Marc-Edouard Vlasic playing with Brent Burns.

After the game, Timo Meier was asked about the line change. He said: “Playing with Gregor and Gambrell, I think it’s, you know, two good hockey players so I think it was an opportunity. I mean, Gregor with his speed and obviously Gambi, I think we had a lot of fun out there.” Asked about how he thought the game went for them, Meier said: “Every time we stepped on the ice we tried to make a difference and use our strengths and, you know, it worked for us.”

Asked what he thought of Meier’s performance, Boughner said: “He was a beast out there. I thought that every time his line was out there he was taking pucks to the net, dragging people on his back, he was finishing on the forecheck, all those kinds of things. That line played well together.”

The Sharks started fast, with three shots in the first two minutes of play. Still, Minnesota scored first at 4:21.

As Karlsson tried to defend a two-on-one, Kirill Kaprizov made the pass across to Zach Parise, who put the puck past Martin Jones as he tried to come across.

The teams traded penalties in the middle of the period, with no change in score.

The Sharks tied it up in the final minute of the period. Erik Karlsson drove the puck deep, and Kevin Labanc gathered it up below the goal line. Labanc made a neat backhand pass to Ryan Donato, who jammed the puck through two Wild players in the direction of the net. The puck touched one of the defenders and slipped under Kaapo Kahkonen.

The Sharks out-shot the Wild 12-3 in the first period, and won 64% of the face-offs. Tomas Hertl drew a penalty with 15 seconds left in the period, so the Sharks started the second on the power play. The Sharks gave up a short-handed chance to Joel Eriksson-Ek in the first minute of the second but no other damage was done.

The Sharks had another power play opportunity at 5:17. Late in the penalty, Donato made a drop pass to Timo Meier, then drifted toward the net. Meier, on the wall, made a pass over to Kane for a one-timer inside the circle. By then, Donato was skating across in front of the net to add a screen.

A little over a minute later, the Wild put the puck in the net, but they did so while pushing Martin Jones across the line with the puck. Bob Boughner challenged the goal and, after a review, it was called back.

Noah Gregor padded the Sharks’ lead at 8:26, his first goal of the year. Gregor skated into the zone with his line spread across the ice. He looked like he would pass as he came down the wall but then took the shot. An assist went to Mario Ferraro.

Nick Bjugstad cut the Sharks’ lead back down to one at 16:47. The teams were playing four-on-four after Jordan Greenway and Nikolai Knyzhov went to the box for matching roughing penalties. Bjugstad posted himself in front of the net for a tip around Mario Ferraro and the Sharks goalie. Assists went to Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter.

The Wild led in shots during the second period, 15-12. In the face-off circle, the Sharks won 57% of the second period draws.

The Wild tied the game 7:20 in to the third period with a power play goal from Kevin Fiala. It only took them three seconds of power play time. Ryan Suter got the puck out of an offensive zone draw and sent it to Fiala for a shot right up the middle. Assists went to Suter and Parise.

The Sharks snatched the game back with just 1:48 left in regulation. It was worth waiting for. Timo Meier had the puck after and offensive zone draw when Brent Burns came down off of the blue line. Meier got the puck to him and Burns bobbed and weaved his way through four Wild skaters before putting the puck away with a backhand lift. Assists went to Meier and Tomas Hertl.

Matt Nieto scored his second of the season into an empty net after gathering the puck in the D zone and carrying it out to take a shot a few strides over the Wild blue line. A quick review for off side showed that it was very close, even under the new rules that say any skate, on or off the ice, can keep you on side. The goal stood up.

Each team scored once in four power plays in the game. The Sharks finished with a solid lead in the face-off circle at 57%, though the Wild improved with each period. The standout Sharks in the face-off circle was Dylan Gambrell, winning 12 of his 16 draws (75%). Logan Couture won 11 of 18 (61%). Tomas Hertl was not very successful, winning just 9 of 22 (41%).

The Sharks next play on Tuesday against the Avalanche in Colorado at 6:00 PM PT.

Kings-Grizzlies game postponed due to Coronavirus protocols

The Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies game was announced postpone on Friday as the two clubs were scheduled to meet Sun Jan 24, 2021 at the empty Fed Ex Arena in Memphis (pinterest.com file photo)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings have had many different turns to this season so far. Ups and downs have been common this year. The Kings last game was a glimmer of hope.

The Kings took on the New York Knicks on Friday night and were able to snap a five game losing streak as they defeated the Knicks 103-94. For the Kings is was important because they were able to hold a team below 100 points. The Kings defense has been atrocious and it will be the key going forward if they want any chance at making the playoffs.

The Kings will have to wait until Wednesday night for the next chance to take the court. Due to issues surrounding the Memphis Grizzlies and COVID 19 protocols the next two games for the Kings have been postponed. No make up dates have been set yet.

On Wednesday, the Kings will travel to Orlando to take on the Magic at 4 PM PST.

Cal finds themselves looking up to visiting USC in 76-68 loss

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–USC’s length and persistence in the paint found its match in Cal’s grit and grind for stretches on Saturday at Haas Pavilion. In the end however the Trojans’ size never relented in their 76-68 win over the Bears.

Evan Mobley had 17 of his game-best 25 points in the second half allowing USC to seize control of a close ballgame in the final minutes as Cal couldn’t capitalize on leading scorer Matt Bradley’s return to action.

The 7’1″ Mobley, currently the third highest ranked NBA prospect in the 2021 draft, consistently challenged the Bears on the block resulting in dunks, offensive rebounds or fouls. Andre Kelly and D.J. Thorpe both fouled out inside five minutes remaining as the freshman knocked down 12 of 15 from the line along with five offensive boards and one don’t blink-fast putback dunk.

“I try to catch it mid-post, drive hard if the lane’s open. If not jab step, shot, create the help, kick out, just make plays for my teammates,” Mobley said in a brief description of his expansive game.

“I think you saw an improved Evan Mobley today than he was early in the week” USC coach Andy Enfield said. “He’s getting better and we demanded that of him this week and he responded in a huge way.”

Cal’s deliberate pace which made UCLA antzy and turnover-prone on Thursday played perfectly for the Trojans who wanted Mobley, his 6’10” brother Isaiah and three other regulars–all 6’8″ or taller–on the floor as much as possible. Evan Mobley seemingly never sat, playing 35 minutes and 19 of 20 after halftime.

Meanwhile, Cal started slowly (trailed 15-4 after five minutes) then bought Bradley off the bench in his first action after missing five games with an ankle injury. His appearance acted as a stabilizer as he along with Grant Anticevich and Joel Brown started to find some gaps in USC’s defense. At the break–and after the horrific start–the Bears trailed just 35-34.

But one early, second half sequence typified Cal’s inability to sustain any momentum as they followed Jarred Hyder’s four-point play with an airball, then a shot clock violation on the next two possessions.

In the final minutes, Ryan Betley’s three brought Cal within 68-66 with 3:02 remaining. But the Bears would score just once more–Betley’s layup–with 28 seconds left.

Anticevich and Brown led Cal with 15 points each, and Bradley added 11, but showed his rust with 1 of 6 shooting from distance. Both teams were 24 of 58 from the floor (41 percent) with the deciding factors the free throw line and the glass where Cal was outscored 21-13 at the foul line and outrebounded 41-32.

The Bears resume their schedule Thursday in Tempe with the rematch against Arizona State.

Jazz hit all the right notes blast Warriors 127-108; Third loss in five games for Golden State

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Utah Jazz (12-4) sent a message to the Golden State Warriors (8-8) and the rest of the NBA that they are one of the elite teams in the Western Conference of the NBA. They entered the game with a seven-game winning streak and a record of 11-4. The Jazz improved on that streak extending it to eight with a convincing 127-198 win over the Warriors.

Their roster includes the two-time defensive player of the year, Rudy Gobert. The veteran Michael Conley and Donovan Mitchell form an outstanding backcourt. Royce O’Neale and sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic are the forwards. The Jazz has two outstanding reserves in Joe Ingles and Jordan Clarkson.

The Warriors, smarting from the loss to the New York Knicks last Thursday, hoped to start well against Utah Saturday night. Alas, that did not happen. Utah jumped off to an early 14-0 lead. They increased the lead to 17, 19-2 before the Warriors could get the offense working.

The Warriors started putting points on the board. They scored 30 points in the quarter. Their problem was the Jazz scored 39. The Warriors started the second quarter, hoping to get back in the game.

The Jazz had other thoughts. They continued to make three-point shots while the Warriors’ offense floundered. The Jazz outscored the Dubs 38-119 to finish the first half with a 30-point advantage,77-47.

Steph Curry led the Warriors with 13 points and made three threes. Curry tied Reggie Miller for second place for most three is a career with 2560. His next three would put him into second place all by himself.

Curry’s first bucket of the third quarter was a three. He now has 2561 threes and is second place for most threes in a career. Ray Allen holds the record with 2973 threes. Curry is on track to break the record in the next two or three years. As for the game, things continued to head south for the Warriors. The Jazz continued to punish Golden State. The led 108-72 with 12 minutes left to play.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr chose to play his reserves for the entire fourth quarter. Utah coach Quin Snyder pulled his starters. The Warriors won the period 36-19, but it was too little, and too late.

Game Notes and Stats:  Curry led the Warriors with 24 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. He made five threes in ten tries. James Wiseman had 15 points and five boards. Andrew Wiggins 13, Kelly Oubre, Jr. 5. Bench reserves Jordan Poole had 10, Nico Mannion eight, including two threes, and Damion Lee nine.

The Jazz had six players in double figures. Donovan Mitchell had 23, Michael Conley 17, Rudy Gobert 11 points and 14 rebounds, Bojan Bogdonavic14. Joe Ingles knocked down 13, and Jordan Clarkson added 14.

The Jazz connected on 23-point shots. The Warriors made 14. The Jazz outrebounded the Dubs 69-41. With the win, the Jazz are 12-4. The Lakers are 13-4, and the Clippers are 12-4. The Jazz are making a statement that they are to considered an elite team. Time will tell.

The Warriors are now 8-8 for the year. The Warriors return home to play two games against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, January 23rd, and Wednesday the 25th. The game time will start at 7 pm at Chase Center in San Francisco.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Homeless in Toronto

For a second season in a row the Toronto Blue Jays have been denied being able to play at Rogers Centre in Toronto due to Coronvirus 19 protocols. The Jays will being their home games in Florida for the 2021 season.

Homeless in Toronto

That’s Amaury News and Commentary-

By Amaury Pi-González

The Toronto Blue Jays recently signed one of the most coveted free-agents in the market, center-fielder George Springer a 6-year $150 million deal to come and play north of the border.

Unfortunately, Blue Jays fans might not see the ex Houston Astros All Star plays in Toronto this season. Canada’s covid-19 protocol requires all incoming international travelers to quarantine for 14 days, upon their arrival. Like last season, teams going to Toronto might be banned again from entering the country.

Rogers Centre the home of the Toronto Blue Jays will probably be empty during this whole summer, again. The only MLB team in Canada continues to be homeless. So, where are they Blue Jays going to play?

Spring Training is expected to open their camps middle of next month, with pitchers and catchers reporting first. The Toronto Blue Jays who train in Dunedin, Florida, might have to play all their regular season homes games at that facility.

They are not going to play their home games like they did in 2020 at the park of their AAA affiliate in Buffalo. Why? The Minor Leagues are expected to resume play this year and the Blue Jays Triple A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons will be playing at Sahlen Field (16,600) so that field will not be available.

The Blue Jays are working on a plan to play all their 81 home games at their Spring Training facility, TD Ballpark at Dunedin, Florida, capacity 8,500. Regardless of how many games are played in MLB this 2021 season, the Toronto Blue Jays will not play again in Buffalo and their hope is then to play in Dunedin, Florida. Or there might be another alternative, unknown as of today. A bubble someplace?

According to reports, Commissioner Rob Manfred is planning for a full 162-game season; others believe that beginning the season in mid-May may be more practical, as the nation has moved from testing to vaccination.

To be truly free of this virus, the country must reach Herd immunity. This only occurs when a large portion of a community (the herd) becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of disease from person to person unlikely. As a result, the whole community becomes protected — not just those who are immune. Seems logical, but this country is over 300 million people, and to reach Herd immunity is not easy.

Vaccination problems. Canada is experiences their own vaccination problems. California, the most populous State in the country today has serious problems with vaccination. The LA Times reported that vaccine shortage could mean in Los Angeles covid shots last until 2022, also California is critically low on covid-19 vaccines and vaccinating 65 and older may last until this June.

The State of California is the worse, #50 and last in vaccinating in the country. California’s population of 39 million people (2020 Census pending) is larger than the whole country of Canada with 37 million. Amazing, considering that Canada is the second largest country in the world by territory, larger than the US.

California leads the way when it comes to teams, we have cinco; Athletics, Angels, Dodgers, Giants and Padres. The 2021 season is complicated; most owners do not want to play again in empty stadiums. Do you blame them?

If you owned a restaurant, would you open it if you do not have any customers? The only certainty so far, is that there are a lot of moving parts on how the season is going to unfold. We are in a new year, but this is not a new problem, like a good friend of mine used to tell me, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”.

Stay tuned and stay well.

Cardinal use last-second shot by da Silva to slip past UCLA in OT 73-72

The Stanford Cardinal’s Oscar da Silva (13) gets the warm reception after scoring a buzzer beater to defeat the visiting UCLA Bruins at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz on Sat Jan 23, 2021 (gostanford.com photo)

Saturday, January 23, 2021

UCLA thought it had secured an overtime win over Stanford on Saturday when Tyger Campbell converted a three-point play with five seconds left in overtime.

With no time outs, the Cardinal used those five seconds efficiently, culminating in a game-winning layup by Oscar da Silva that gave Stanford a 73-72 Pac 12 men’s basketball victory at its home-away-from-home in Santa Clara before a national television audience.

It was the Bruins’ first conference loss of the season, and it came after UCLA (12-3 overall, 8-1 Pac-12) took a 72-71 lead on Campbell’s layup-plus-1. Stanford moved the ball upcourt with no time outs, and after the Bruins’ Jalen Hill swatted a 3-point attempt by Jaiden Delaire out of bounds near the basket, 0.8 seconds remained.

On the inbound play, no one sealed off da Silva, who sliced through the lane unobstructed, took Michael O’Connell’s pass and converted a layup with 0.1 seconds showing.

Stanford and UCLA each had a chance to win in regulation. Da Silva missed a layup with 22 seconds left, and Campbell missed a jump shot from the left elbow.

Da Silva – Stanford’s leading scorer – finished with 26 points. The Cardinal (9-5, 5-3) played without starters Ziaire Williams, Daejon Davis and Bryce Wills. Dalaire added 19 points, including a steal-and-dunk with 1:39 to play.

Johnny Juzang, a transfer from Kentucky, led UCLA with 27 points, including the Bruins’ final 16 points of the first half. Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 14 points.

Stanford remains undefeated in five games at Kaiser Permanente Arena, home of the Golden State Warriors’ G-League team. The Cardinal are still unable to play at Maples Pavilion due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Cardinal hit the road for their next four games – at Arizona on Thursday and at Arizona State next Saturday; then at USC on Feb. 2 and at California on Feb. 4.
