Pacers’ defense shuts down Warriors attack in second half for win 104-95

The Golden State Warriors Kelly Oubre Jr takes a shot against the Indiana Pacers defense in the first half at Chase Center in San Francisco on Tue Jan 12, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors faced the Indiana Pacers Tuesday night at the Chase Center. The Pacers, still smarting from a close loss to the Sacramento Kings Monday night, found a way to beat the Warriors 104-95.

The Pacers’ Victor Oladipo was not available to play. The Warriors’ Eric Paschall had to miss the game due to NBA protocol regarding the coronavirus. It is not known if Paschall has the virus or was in contact with someone that did.

The first half featured the teams playing outstanding defense. The Pacers wanted to stop Stephen Curry from beating them. The Warriors without Paschall, had to find a way to keep Domantas Sabonis and Malcolm Brogdon to do the same to the Pacers.

Both strategies worked. The Pacers held Curry to just five points in the first half. The Warriors defense allowed Sabonis six and Brogdon seven. The Warriors finished the first 24 minutes of action leading 55-50.

Kelly Oubre, Jr. led the Warriors with 15. Oubre made three threes and had four boards. Oubre’s defense was stellar. Andrew Wiggins had 12 points, and he made two threes. The Pacers’ Myles Turner had 13.

The second half belonged to the Pacers. They outscored the Warriors 23-18 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to two 77-73. Curry made three threes and recorded 11 of the Warriors 18 points.

The Warriors and Pacers continued to play tough defense. Each team had to work hard to get points on the board. The Warriors led 90-88 when the Pacers went on a 13-0 run to lead 101-90 with about a minute left to play. The Pacers outscored the Warriors 31-20 in the fourth quarter to win 104-95.

Game Notes and Stats: With the loss, the Warriors are 6-5 for the year. The Pacers improved to 7-4.

Andrew Wiggins continued to play well on both ends of the court. Andrew finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists, four threes, and five blocked shots. Curry knocked down 20. He made three threes and had four boards and three assists. Oubre, who had 15 in the first half, tallied two in the second to finish with 17. He made three threes to go along with five rebounds and two assists.

The Warriors made three turnovers in the first half. They made 12 in the second. The Pacers scored 24 points as a result of the turnovers to help them win.

The Warriors play the next three games on the road. They face the Denver Nuggets Thursday night at The Ball Center in Denver for a 7 pm tip. They play the Suns in Phoenix Friday night and the Lakers in Los Angeles Monday night.

Kings snap 2-game losing streak with 127-122 win over Pacers

By Ana Kieu

SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Kings continued their homestand by playing host to the Indiana Pacers on Monday night. Monday’s matchup at the Golden 1 Center featured two teams trending in two different directions, but it was the Kings who defeated the Pacers 127-122 in an action-packed game.

The Kings started off on the wrong foot as Victor Oladipo threw down a dunk for an early 2-0 lead, but they poured in the points, tying the game at 12 and taking a 28-22 lead late in the first quarter. The Kings’ lead didn’t last long, but they finished the first on a better note as De’Aaron Fox made a pair of free throws, and the two teams were tied at 30 after the first quarter.

Edmond Summer made a free throw to put the Pacers up 32-30 just 14 seconds into the second quarter. Sacramento, however, outscored Indiana 35-34 in the second quarter. De’Aaron Fox hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to wrap up the first half with a bang. The Kings led 65-64, heading into the locker room at the half.

The Pacers came out to play in the second half. Victor Oladipo made a pass to Domantas Sabonis for a layup that put the Pacers up 66-65 at 10:40 of the third quarter. Malcolm Brogden made a late driving layup, but the Kings were protected by a small safety as Hassan Whiteside hit a 2-pointer 31.4 seconds beforehand. The Kings had a 97-93 lead after three quarters.

Richaun Holmes opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to make it 100-93 Kings at 11:32. Tyrese Haliburton followed up with a 3-pointer of his own, and the Kings took a 10-point lead, 103-93, just 23 seconds later. Harrison Barnes’ scoring outburst led to a game-high 28 points at a media timeout.

The Pacers tied the game at 113 on a Victor Oladipo free throw with 4:09 left in the fourth quarter. Richaun Holmes was called for goaltending, but the Kings challenged the call, which was overturned after further review. As a result, it was Sacramento’s ball and 23 seconds were added to the shot clock.

The final seconds of the game were interesting to say the least. Cory Joseph made a free throw to put the Kings up 127-119 with 8.8 seconds left. Malcolm Brogden hit a 3-pointer to pull the Pacers within five, but it was too little, too late. The Kings won 127-122 and snapped a two-game losing streak.

Sacramento improved to 5-6. Harrison Barnes led all scorers with 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. De’Aaron Fox scored 21 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds. Buddy Hield scored 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Richaun Holmes added 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Indiana fell to 6-4. Domantas Sabonis led all scorers with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Warriors hold off Raptors in win 106-105; Bench rises as Curry has off night scoring

The Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins (22) led the Warriors in scoring takes a shot against the Toronto Raptors guard Norman Powell (right) on Sun Jan 10, 2021 at Chase Center in San Francisco (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

On a night when Stephen Curry had the worst shooting night of his illustrious career, the Warriors found a way to withstand Toronto’s furious fourth-quarter comeback to win 106-105.

In every game in which Curry scored 30 or more points, Golden State finished with a win. Curry put just 13 points on the board. The Warriors won the game with great defense and six players scoring in double figures. The bench helped out with 46 points. As the fans around the NBA know, there is more to Curry’s game than scoring. He was credited with six assists, and he pulled down nine rebounds.

The Warriors led for the first three quarters. They won the first quarter 31-24. They led 10-1 to start the game. Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman, and Kelly Oubre, Jr. paced the Warrior offense.

The Warriors second unit of Eric Paschall, Brad Wanaker, and Damian Lee helped the Warriors finish the first half leading 61-49. Curry has three points in the first half. Wiggins 11, Wiseman 10, Paschall 8, and Lee 8. Pascal Siakam had 16 for the Raptors. Fred VanVleet 10, and Chris Boucher 10.

The Warriors continued to dominate play in the third quarter. They increased the lead to fifteen 87-72 and appeared to be cruising to a victory. However, in the NBA, teams have to not take things easy in the fourth and final period of play.

Eric Paschall made a bucket to put the Warriors up by seventeen. It was at this point in the game that things went south for the Warriors. Toronto went on a 21 to five-run to make it a one-point game 94-93.

Kelly Oubre connected on a three to give the Warriors some breathing room 97-93. Toronto scored the next five points to go ahead by one 98-97. They hit a three to lead by four 101-97. Curry knocked down a three to make it 101-100. Toronto answered with a bucket to lead 103-100 with 1:45 left.

Baskets by Curry and Kent Bazemore put the Warriors ahead 104-103. Toronto scored to lead 105-104 with 7.6 seconds left. Damian Lee was fouled attempting a three-pointer. Toronto coach Nick Nurse challenged the call. After the review, the referees determined that Lee was fouled before the shot.

He would not get three free throws. Since the Raptors were over the foul limit, Lee was awarded two free throws. He made both to give the Warriors the advantage 106-105 with 4.3 seconds left to play. Toronto got the ball into Pascal Siakam’s hands. His shot at the buzzer failed to go down. The Warriors held on to win 106-105.

Game Notes and stats: With the win, the Warriors improved their season record to 6-4. The Raptors fell to 2-7.

Draymond Green had his best game of the season. He just missed a triple-double. He kicked in with ten points, nine rebounds, and ten assists. Wiggins had 17, Wiseman 10, Oubre 12, Curry 11, and Eric Paschall 15. For Paschall, it was his eighth game in a row with ten or more points. Damian Lee had 13, Bazemore nine, Wanamaker 7.

The Warriors bench outscored the Raptors bench 46-25.

Pascal Siakam led the Raptors with 25. Fred VanVleet had 21, Chris Boucher 15, and he was a force on defense with six blocked shots. Kyle Lowrey had 17, 16 of which came in the fourth period.

The Warriors finish the seven-game home stand against the Indiana Pacers Tuesday night at the Chase Center. The game will start at 7 pm.

The Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jerod Goff (16) throws against the Seattle Seahawks defense and defensive end Carolos Dunlap (43) during the second half of action in the NFL Wild Card game in Seattle (AP News photo)

On the NFL Playoff review with Barbara:

#2 Barbara, how much of a surprise was it for you that the Los Angeles Rams came up a winner over the Seattle Seahawks 30-20. For the Rams quarterback Jared Goff threw for 125 yards and a touchdown and the Rams had good offensive command over the Seahawks.

#3 The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got down to business on Saturday with a convincing win over the Washington Football Team 31-23. Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady threw for 381 yards and two touchdowns.  Washington tried to make an attempt to catch the Bucs but fell short 16-13 but fell short in the ten point loss.

#4 The Baltimore Ravens came up with a close win over the Tennessee Titans 20-13 on Sunday. After a tied first half at 10-10 the Ravens scored seven in the third quarter and got a seven point win. The Ravens starting quarterback LeMar Jackson rushed for 136 yards, threw for 179 yards, no touchdowns and one interception for the win.

#5 Barbara low scoring game but good enough for the New Orleans Saints who scored three touchdowns in each of the first, third and fourth quarters and were shutout in the second for a 21-9 win in New Orleans. Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns.

#6 The Cleveland Browns had the lead from start to finish and came away with an 11 point win 48-37. Brown quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns. The Browns pretty much stayed ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers all game long. This win advances the Browns to the next round of the playoffs and this is second week in a row that the Browns defeated the Steelers.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: XXXII Olympic Summer Games – Japan $12.6 Billion

2021 Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo (image from NBC Sports)

XXXII Olympic Summer Games – Japan $12.6 Billion

By Amaury Pi-González

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

The government of Japan has invested the equivalent of $12.6 billion dollars to host this Summer Olympic Games. Although it will be held between July 23 and August 8, 2021 the Tokyo Olympics will still be called the 2020 Olympics, that could not take place because of the Pandemic.

This is the first time this world sporting event will be held in an odd-numbered year, since the modern era began in 1896. Total of 11,091 athletes from 206 nations are scheduled to participate at the Japan National Stadium, in Tokyo.

Japan is the third most industrialized and third largest economy in the world, however beginning this 2021 newly reported cases of Coronavirus are an all-time high in Tokyo and a second state of emergency for the capital Tokyo with a population of 9.5 million people has been declared. Despite the current circumstances, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has remained steadfast in his plan to host the 2020 Olympic Games this summer.

The budget for this Olympic Games in Tokyo is a US equivalent of $12.6 billion dollars, by far the most expensive in history. And late last year it was reported it could even be twice as much. Even for a rich country as Japan, money is no match for the Coronavirus.

World Wars, politics, terrorism and pandemics have infringed the Olympics during history. If the Olympics do not take place, Japan looses a huge investment, but its only money and a rich country like Japan definitely could survive it.

For the thousands of athletes around the world, that have trained for years this moment in their lives that could definitely be devastating. After all they take place every four years. A 16-year old female gymnast, if the games are cancelled would be 20 years old when their next opportunity comes around.

That, most likely would kill the chances of that gymnast. A Gymnast has a window of opportunity when they are at the “top of their game”, during their young teen years. It would also affect mentally as well as physically most participants, regardless of age.

Many American Olympic hopefuls keep training and praying that the games take place as scheduled. The last Summer Olympic Games took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The USA delegation was the largest among all 206 nations, with 554 athletes. This year is expected to be very similar in size. There are a handful of new sports added this time.

Baseball and softball are back on the Olympics after being absent since the Beijing 2008 games. Major League Baseball players are not allowed to participate in the Olympics.
