Warriors falter in fourth quarter fall to Clippers 109-100

The Golden State Warriors, still without D’Angelo Russell and Kevon Looney, gave the Los Angeles Clippers all they could handle for three quarters Friday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Omari Spellman made his first start in the NBA and continued to play well for the Warriors.

Spellman had his fourth consecutive game in double-figures, and it appears that he will see a lot more action in the upcoming games. The Clippers, who blew out the Warriors on opening night at the first game ever at the Chase Center, figured they would have no trouble beating the revamped lineup.

They were wrong, and they trailed the Warriors by ten at the end of three periods by a score of 83-73. The young Warriors felt they had an upset in the making, but the Clippers behind Kawhi Leonard, Montrezl Harrell, and Lou Williams found their game, and they were able to propel the Clippers to a 109-100 win.

In the first quarter, the Clippers got off to an early 18-9 lead. The Warriors’ Alec Burks, Glenn Robinson, and Willie Cauley-Stein all made contributions, and the Warriors erased the deficit to tie the game at 20. The Clippers made the last basket of the quarter leading 22-20.

The Warriors found their game in the second quarter. They outscored the Clippers 33-26 to finish the first half leading 53-48. Spellman made two threes to help pace the Warriors to the five-point advantage. Glenn Robinson led the Warriors with 13. Spellman had 11.

Kawhi Leonard paced the Clippers with 15. Leonard was the only Clipper in double-figures in the first half. The Warriors played well on defense to stymie the Clipper offense. The W’s shot 43% from the floor in the half but were 4-for-19 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Clippers went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter. LA erased the five-point deficit to lead by two 55-53. The Warriors regrouped and led 68-62 when Draymond Green knocked down a three. Reserve guard Jacob Evans made three mid-range jumpers to help send the Warriors to a 10-point lead 83-73 after three-quarters of play.

The Clippers are a team that will be in the playoffs. They know how to win games. Their star player, Kawhi Leonard, won the NBA Championship last year when he was a Toronto Raptor. He is excellent in crunch time. His teammates, Montrezl Harrell, Lou Williams, Patrick Beverly, and Mo Harkless, have been around the block a few times, and Friday night’s game was not their first rodeo.

The Clippers showed the young Warriors that if they want to win in the NBA, they have to stop their opponent’s big guns. They tried but could not shut down the Clipper offense. The Clippers went on a 13-2 run to open the quarter to lead 87-85. The Warriors never led again. They came close, but Kawhi Leonard and Company outscored them 36-17 in the quarter  to win 109-100,

Game Notes and stats- The Warriors dropped their seventh game in a row and are now 9-31 for the season. The Clippers improved to 27-12. The Clippers’ Paul George did not play due to a hamstring injury.

The Warriors played well on defense the entire game. They also did an excellent job rebounding. The Warriors had trouble making three-point shots. They made eight in 39 tries. Spellman accounted for four of them. Spellman and Robinson led the Warriors with 17 points each. Alec Burks had 16, Eric Paschall 12, and Damion Lee 10.

Kawhi Leonard finished the night with 36. He had nine boards and five assists. Patrick Beverly just missed a triple-double. Beverly had 12 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. He made three threes, too. Montrezl Harrell finished with 11 pints and 10 boards for a double-double. Lou Williams, coming off the bench, tallied 21. He made three threes in six tries.

The Warriors resume play on Sunday in Memphis against the Grizzlies. The game will start at 3 pm. Pacific Time

 

Kings can’t pass the Buck get stomped 127-106

SACRAMENTO–The Kings have been playing better of late. They are 3-1 in the new year and hoping to continue the trend after a brutal month of December. The Milwaukee Bucks were the opponent in store for the Kings. The Bucks have the best record in the NBA while the Kings are just starting to get their footing again. The tip-off was set for 7 PM PST at Golden One Center.

In the first, the Kings were flat outplayed. The Kings weren’t able to hit any of their nine three-pointers and only shot 38.1% overall from the field. The Kings mustered only 18 points in the first quarter. It was a different story for the Bucks. They shot 56% from the floor in the first and were able to put up 34 points. Leading the way for the Bucks was Eric Bledsoe who had 11 points. The Kings had four players with four points.

In the second, the Kings continued to miss shots. Thankfully for Kings fans, the Bucks couldn’t hit a three-pointer to save their lives either. The Kings shot 18% from deep in the first half while the Bucks shot a whopping 19%. Each team struggled mightily to hit from deep.

However, the Kings did manage to pull closer. The Kings scored 26 points compared to the Bucks 19 to pull within nine points. The score would be 53-44 as the teams paused for intermission. Leading the way through the first half for the Kings was De’Aaron Fox with 10 points as Eric Bledsoe dropped 17 first-half points.

In the third, The Kings rallied early. They even came all the way back and took the lead for a short minute. However, the success was short-lived. The Bucks rallied back to retake the lead and coast into the fourth quarter. The Bucks put up 37 points compared to the Kings 31 to make it a 90-75 headed to the final session.

In the fourth, there wasn’t much good for the Kings. Both teams traded buckets with each other to keep the game around a 15 point bucks lead. Unfortunately for the Kings, Harrison Barnes came up hobbling with a few minutes left in the game. It wasn’t apparently known the severity of Barnes’s right leg injury but it didn’t appear good.

Barnes hobbled off the court and the Kings couldn’t muster anything from the reserves as came in. The Kings ultimately fell to the Bucks 127-106. Leading the way for the victorious Bucks was Kris Middleton with 27 points followed by Eric Bledsoe who had 24. The Kings received good appearances form De’Aaron Fox and the aforementioned Harrison Barnes who both had 19 points.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to face the Orlando Magic on Monday at 7 PM PST.

#1 Will the task be easy for the San Francisco 49ers to get by the Minnesota Vikings Saturday or it’s not as easy as it looks. The 49ers picked by seven. In San Francisco’s last game they just got by the Seattle Seahawks by the slimmest of margins 26-21 and for the Minnesota Vikings they just got by the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome 26-20 on a pass to Kyle Rudolph from quarterback Kirk Cousins for the win.

#2 The Ravens have been a pick as on odds favorites to make the Super Bowl, they’ve had lots of rest since their last game of the regular season on Dec 29th against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 28-10 win. It was a game where quarterback LaMar Jackson sat out to rest for the playoffs as Jackson and the Raven are favored to beat the Tennessee Titans this Saturday by 10 points.

#3 The Houston Texans are in Kansas City the Chiefs for Saturday’s playoff match the Chiefs are favored by nine in this one. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mohomes in his last game against San Diego went 16-25 for 174 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

#4 The Seattle Seahawks are in Green Bay, the Packers are favored by four points this one could be even closer than the odds. This game will feature two of the NFC’s best quarterbacks for Seattle Russell Wilson in NFC Wild Card game was 18-30 for 325 yards and for Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rogers on the last day of the season on Dec 29th vs. Detroit went 27-55 for a whopping 323 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The 49ers got a narrow win themselves when the 49ers prevented the Seahawks at Century Link Field in Seattle to score in the fourth quarter to insure home field advantage.

#2 Tennessee @ Baltimore: The Tennessee Titans (10-7) battle, scratched and clawed to get this far they take a lot of faith and hope into this next game against the Baltimore Ravens. Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill went 8-15 for 72 yards and a touchdown in the Titans last game against the New England Patriots in a 20-13 win. For the Ravens (14-2) they’ve been picked as favorites to make the Super Bowl and have tons of confidence in their starting quarterback LaMar Jackson who got this far.

Sunday

#3 Houston @ Kansas City: The Houston Texans got a three point win in their last game over the Buffalo Bills 22-19 to advance to the next round of the playoffs. The Texans with quarterback Deshaun Watson under center threw 247 yards against the Bills and had one touchdown. The favored Kansas City Chiefs (12-4) with quarterback Patrick Mahomes under center have been doing it all year. In the Chiefs last game Mahomes threw for 174 yards, went 16-25 and a touchdown.

#4 Seattle @ Green Bay: This game could be the game of the week in the NFL Playoffs this weekend. This game will provide two of the most exciting quarterbacks in football with Russell Wilson going for the Seahawks and Aaron Rogers going for the Green Bay Packers. In Wilson’s last game against the 49ers Wilson went 25-40, 233 yards, and two touchdowns. For the Packers (13-3) quarterback Aaron Rogers in his last game against Detroit went 27-55 for 323 yards and two touchdowns and an interception.

Cal Comes Around: Pac-12 home opening win over WSU, 73-66, ends frustrating stretch for the Bears

BERKELEY, CA–For the Cal Bears Thursday night everything went wrong, including the lead up. That included a week of practice that coach Mark Fox said was poor, a couple of players got injured, an uneven shootaround, then the start of the game against Washington State, in which the Bears found themselves doubled up, and trailing by 13.

Talk about making your opponent feel comfortable: in the game’s first 11 1/2 minutes, eight Cougars played, eight Cougars scored, and none took or needed more than three shots to get on the board. WSU led 26-13.

But as quickly as things went wrong, they went right: the Bears finished the half on a 25-5 run and never looked back. Cal’s first win in a month, on the critical occasion of the Pac-12 home opener, 73-66 over WSU, seemingly came out of nowhere.

“It took us a while to calm down, and also it took a while to get our defense to the level it needed to be,” Fox said. “And once we were able to stabilize we clawed out of the hole and played fairly stable the rest of the game.”

Matt Bradley led Cal with a career-best 26 points and 10 rebounds, including a three with less than a minute remaining, that increased Cal’s 69-66 lead to six points. Bradley had a different view of the week’s practices than did Fox, but no one could dispute that Cal’s offensive leader had struggled. Coming in Bradley had slumped, shooting just 38 percent from the field since December 1, and only 25 percent from three.

But against WSU, Bradley started early and finished the Cougars late, making 10 of 14 shots, and coming up with some smart decisions when faced with an array of double teams.

“These last couple of games have been pretty rough for me and my team,” Bradley said. “We’ve been trying to figure out here and there but we had a great week of practice.  The only thing, we said, ‘stay competitive, stay fighting hard, and stay tough.'”

“It’s not all on him,” Fox said of Bradley. “But you love the fact that the guy who’s arguably one of your best players is taking that much responsibility.”

Paris Austin contributed a season-best 17 points for the Bears, and Grant Anticevich added 12. Cal played without Juhwan Harris-Dyson and Jacobi Gordon due to injuries.

Washington State was led by C.J. Elleby with 22 points, and Noah Williams who had 16. Elleby is the son of Bill Elleby, who was a scoring guard for the Bears in the 90’s. The Cougars flamed out after their fast start, turning the ball over 22 times, and allowing 32 points in the paint. The Bears shot 55 percent in the first half, and 51 percent for the game.

Washington State, coming off an impressive, come-from-behind, home win over UCLA faces Stanford on Saturday. The Bears host Washington, who were surprised by Stanford’s closing run in Thursday’s loss.

 

 

Second-half comeback sparks Cardinal past Washington 61-55

A late Stanford rally, capped by Tyrell Tyler’s 3-pointer with under two minutes remaining in regulation, helped the Cardinal defeat visiting Washington 61-55 Thursday in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Maples Pavilion.

Daejon Davis scored 12 points in the second half, including his game-tying 3, for the Cardinal (13-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-12). Stanford has won six of its last seven games.

On the defensive end, the Cardinal held Washington scoreless over the last 3 minutes and 12 seconds, and outscored the Huskies 26-8 in the final 11 minutes. In addition, Stanford held UW”s Isaiah Stewart to a season-low four points – his first game under 12 points this season.

Stanford stayed in the game with the combined assistance of Spencer Jones, James Keefe and Oscar da Silva. Jones scored eight of his 14 points in the first half, Keefe added seven first-half points and da Silva bagged all 11 of his points in the second half.

Leading the Huskies was Jaden McDaniels, who accomplished his first career double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds for Washington (11-5, 1-2). Nahziah Carter was next for the Huskies with 16 points.

Oakland native Quade Green was declared academically ineligible by Washington on Thursday. In his place, Elijah Hardy made his first csreer start.

Stanford bounced back from a rough start, as the Cardinal shot 28 percent from the field – 3 of 14 behind the arc – in the first half. Meanwhile, Washington led by as many a 12 before White connected on a 3-pointer to cut Stanford’s deficit to 28-20 at halftime.

Davis underwent concussion protocol after being hit in the eye nearly seven minutes into the first half. He returned just before halftime.

The Cardinal hosts Washington State on Saturday.
