That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: 46 Years Later, Roberto Clemente’s Legacy Lives On

El Cometa de Carolina (translation: The Carolina Comet).

Roberto Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico August 18,1934. His father, Don Melchor Clemente, was a sugar cane worker; his mother, Luisa, was a laundress. On December 31, 1972, an airplane he chartered to bring food and other relief supplies to survivors of a recent earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua crashes shortly after takeoff from San Juan, P.R. It was 46 years ago that five people were killed in the crash, including Clemente, whose body was never recovered. Many of you reading this, were not born 46 years ago; but Roberto Clemente was more than a superstar trailblazer baseball player.

There are 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and Clemente is one of those athletes adored and recognized in all of them. His name represents the best of Latin America and is a unifying force for all of us who were born in Latin America.

A great life of a humanitarian and world recognized figure. MLB’s The Roberto Clemente Award (previously known as the Commissioner’s Award) is given annually to the MLB player who best exemplifies the game of baseball sportsmanship, and community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team. This award has been given each year since after the untimely death of the superstar. The statistics of this legendary baseball player are well documented as listed at National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y.

Al Campanis was managing winter ball in Cuba when he went to Puerto Rico and saw Clemente play as an 18 year old and graded Clemente an A or A+ in most categories. There were a lot of moves by management, and at the end Clemente signed with Montreal (Dodgers’ minor league club), but the Dodgers didn’t even wanted to contemplate the possibility of the young future superstar playing with N.Y. Giants in the same outfield with another great young player, by the name of Willie Mays. At the end, Clemente started his glorious career with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

How much is Roberto Clemente revered? During an exhibit of the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum and Hall Of fame at the main library in San Francisco,California, many people of Puerto Rican descent and prayed, right in front of the famous #21 history and memorabilia display.

United States postage stamps honor those whose memories and accomplishments mark an enduring legacy. Postal service policy states that individuals (excepting U.S. Presidents) may only be considered for this honor a decade after their death. This is a tremendous feat and Roberto Clemente Walker has been honored twice. The first stamp honoring Roberto appeared August 17,1984, and then he was selected again in 2000 for the U.S. Postal Service Legends of Baseball series. Clemente enlisted in the US Marines Corps Reserves after the 1958 season and spent six months in active duty at Parris Island, South Carolina and Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. He served until 1964 and was inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame on 2003.

Clemente was the first Hispanic player to win a World Series as a starter, be named league MVP, be named World Series MVP and be elected to the Hall of Fame. He was the first to win a World Series as a starter, be named league MVP, be named World Series MVP and be elected to the Hall of Fame. Some in the media called him Bob or Bobby. He did not like that and said he wanted to be called by his name Roberto (Bob is Spanish for Roberto).

He suffered discrimination, according to NBC News, he once said “I don’t believe in color.”

During one game I was covering at Candlestick Park for El Mundo News of Oakland, Calif., the Pirates were visiting the Giants. Towards the end of his career, I remember he struck out and a writer in the press box shouted “send him back on a banana boat” and some other reporters laughed at it, like it was a joke. He began his career in the major leagues in 1955, just eight years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. Players of color including Latinos of dark skin at that time were “tolerated,” but still not really accepted. I know Roberto would be very proud today to see that almost 30% of all players in the majors are Hispanic/Latino.

There might be more statues of Clemente (around 12) in P.R., U.S. and Nicaragua than any other athlete in history, including Diego Armando Maradona, Pelé and Muhammad Ali. Before he wore #21, Clemente wore #13 during his first season in the majors in 1955. His full name Roberto Clemente Walker has a total of 21 letters.

Clemente collected his 3,000 career hit in his final at-bat, during the last week of the 1972 MLB season on September 30,1972 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. A double against the left field wall from Mets lefty Jon Matlack. The recordings of this historic moment is at the archives of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum at Cooperstown, N.Y. in the voices of Bob Prince, longtime Pirates announcer and my colleague, mentor and friend, the great Cuban-born announcer Rafael “Felo” Ramírez in Spanish. Little did we know that would be the last hit of Clemente’s life. Clemente gave everything he had on the field playing baseball and ultimately he gave his life to help others unknown to him, in another country. In my opinion, this is the best quote that actually did justice to this great man.

“I want to be remembered as a ballplayer who gave all he had to give.”
— Roberto Clemente.

Happy Holidays!

On the San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe:

#1 San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is so concerned about the noise level that they had to deal with at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay last Sunday. He plans to ask the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to have the very loud PA announcer to keep the volume down.

#2 Shanahan is quite familiar with the noise level at upcoming CenturyLink Field this coming Sunday-a place better know for the fans as the 12th man.

#3 The Seattle Seahawks have won seven straight home games, making the 49ers visit to Century Link tough enough in spite of dealing with the loud crowd.

#4 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens quarterback rating has taken a dive since his debut against the Raiders (151.9) against the New York Giants (73.3), and then it fell against Tampa Bay (62.1).

#5 The Reuben Foster signing by Washington took many by surprise and only two days after he was let go by the 49ers. Washington’s head coach Jay Gruden said the team will address the community saying the team will address the outcry and they’ll try and find out exactly what happened.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Freshmen Kelly and Bradley get the ball more often in helping Cal beat Santa Clara last Monday

photo from sfgate.com: Santa Clara forward Hendrik Jardersten (3) dunks the ball against Cal during the second half of Monday night’s game at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Miguel:

#1 A big welcome to Cal (2-3) freshmen Matt Bradley and Andre Kelly. Can they get better with Bradley and Kelly in the lineup?

#2 In the Bears’ 78-66 victory at Haas Pavilion Monday night, Darius McNeill told Bears head coach Wyking Jones to let him stay in the game. Turns out there was a method to the madness as McNeil was feeding Bradley and Kelly, who helped score some important points.

#3 It was Bradley’s 13 points of the Bears 15 points in the final 6:33 of the game that pulled them away from the Santa Clara Broncos.

#4 Jones said that it was the players trust in each other and passing the ball that made a difference in this one.

#5 The Bears’ tipoff against the St. Mary’s Gales (2-5) Saturday night in Moraga with the Gales on a slide. Can the Bears take advantage of the Gales with home court advantage?

Kings drop third straight, 133-121, to the Clippers

By: Jeremiah Salmonson

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The last time the Sacramento Kings played was on Sunday. The last time the Los Angeles Clippers played was on Wednesday. The logical conclusion to draw would be that the Kings would come out fresh and the Clippers would appear to be sluggish. The opposite happened was true on Thursday night at the Golden 1 Center. The Clippers came out in full force, scoring 42 points in the opening quarter. The Kings managed to put up a respectable 26 points, but it was no match for the offensive outburst by the Clippers. The Kings would have to cool down the red-hot Clippers in the second quarter to stay in the game.

The Kings would do just that. Led by Bogdan Bogdanovic and De’Aaron Fox the Kings were able to rally the game closer. After the half, the Kings would be down only by three points 71-68.

In the third, we started nearly even with both teams looking for a leg up! The Clippers would hold onto a slight advantage. Both teams went back and forth shooting baskets and drawing fouls. When it was all said and done, the Clippers extended the lead to 101-93. At this point, the leading scorers were Marvin Bagley (18), De’Aaron Fox (17), and Bogdan Bogdanovic (16) for the Kings. For the Clippers, Tobias Harris led the way with 21 points through three quarters.

Unfortunately for Kings fans, that glimmer of hope wouldn’t last long. The Clippers would go on a roll to score 32 and put away the Kings 133-121.

Perhaps overshadowing the game was the developing story of Dave Joerger and Brandon Williams feud. It was widely reported earlier in the day that Dave Joerger told Brandon Williams to leave shoot-around on Thursday afternoon. This stemming from the rumors that Joerger and Williams have had disagreements on various decisions regarding the Kings for a while now. Keep an eye out on Sports Radio Service for updates on this developing story.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to play the Indiana Pacers on Saturday at 7:00 PM PST.

Warriors play another thriller, but lose 131-128 to the Raptors in OT

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Warriors met the Eastern Division leaders, the Toronto Raptors, in Toronto Thursday evening. The Raptors entered the game with the best record in the NBA 18-4. The Raptors made a trade with the San Antonio Spurs after the 2017-2018 season ended to acquire Kawhi Leonard in exchange for Demar DeRozan. Leonard played in just nine games last season due to injury. Leonard was not happy in San Antonio and appears to have found a comfortable home in Toronto. The Warriors’ Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Alfonzo McKinnie were not available. Curry has missed the last eleven games due to a groin strain but will return to action Saturday night when the Warriors meet the Detroit Pistons.

The Warriors, behind the exceptional play of Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson, won their last three games. They came from behind to win thrillers over Sacramento and Orlando. They played another thriller against Toronto as they came back from an 18-point deficit to tie the game in regulation. Unfortunately, the Raptors prevailed in the five-minute overtime period to down the Warriors 131-128.

The Raptors thoroughly outplayed the Warriors in the first quarter. Toronto went on a 13-0 run to take an early 14-point lead 20-6. The Warriors offense woke up, and they started to make baskets. They trailed 24-14 when Toronto went on another 8-0 run to lead 32-14. The Warriors closed the gap a smidge but finished the period down by 13points 39-25. Toronto was 14-for-18 from the floor in the first eight minutes and eighteen seconds of action. They also made six three-point shots in ten attempts. The Warriors shot 58% from the floor while Toronto shot an astounding 72.2%

Toronto held the lead for the entire second quarter. Golden State trailed by seventeen at one point in the period, but they continued to fight. They were able to finish the first half down by nine 67-58. They outscored the Raptors 38-29 in the quarter.

The Warriors tried to get back in the game in the third quarter. They trailed by seven 69-62 when Toronto went on a 10-0 run to lead 79-62. It appeared that Toronto was going to cruise to an easy win. Durant, Thompson, and company had other thoughts. The Warriors continued to fight. They needed to make stops, and they did as they clawed their way back to trail 96-88 after three periods of play. The Raptors led by Kawhi Leonard, Serge Ibaka, and Pascal Siakam thwarted the Warriors at every turn. Kevin Durant was not on the floor to start the fourth quarter. The Warriors, behind Klay Thompson and Jonas Jerebko, went on a 9-0 run and closed to within two 103-101. Toronto responded to take a ten-point lead 114-104. KD was back on the floor, and the Warriors went on another 8-0 run to make it 114-112. The Raptors increased the lead to 119-113, but Durant came through with two three-pointers to tie the game at 119 as time ran out.

The Warriors did not play well in overtime. They committed five turnovers as the Raptors outscored them 12-9 to win by a final of 131-128.

Game notes and stats. Kevin Durant had his third consecutive game scoring forty or more points. It was the first time in his career that he had achieved this feat. KD ended the night with 51 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. It was the sixth time in his career that he scored fifty or more in a game. Klay Thompson had 23, and Jonas Jerebko knocked down 20. No other Warrior was in double figures. Kawhi Leonard led Toronto with 37. Serge Ibaka had 20, and Pascal Siakam recorded 26. The Raptors had three other players in double figures.

The Warriors drop to 15-7 and are 5-6 with Steph Curry out of the lineup. The Raptors improve to 19-4.

The Warriors travel to Detroit to face the Pistons Saturday nigh

San Jose State, Spartan football receives $2 million gift from SJSU alumnus

By: Ana Kieu

SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose State Spartans football had nothing much to cheer about. Well, that all changed Wednesday, as San Jose State University is pleased to announce that it has received a $2 million gift commitment from alumnus John Hopkirk and his wife Anne Murphy. Their gift will support a critical resource for the Spartan football program–a new state-of-the-art football operations center on the east side of CEFCU Stadium, Home of the Spartans.

“John and Anne have been long-time Spartan supporters and their gift to the football operations center demonstrates their love for San Jose State University,” said athletics director Marie Tuite. “They understand and support the priority of investing in football to provide Coach Brennan and his staff the tools they need to build a championship program.  In addition, John and Anne understand the value and impact their gift will have on changing the lives of the student-athletes we serve. We are so grateful for their generosity.”

The football operations center will include locker rooms, offices, a student-athlete lounge, an auditorium and premium seating options on the 50-yard line. The project will rebuild the stadium’s east side. The gift will add to improvements underway throughout South Campus, including the recently completed soccer, tennis, golf, and softball facilities.

Proud Spartans
John Hopkirk worked his way through school at SJSU while pursuing a degree in business accounting. Hopkirk’s love for Spartan athletics took off after he graduated and began his professional career as a certified public accountant. As an avid supporter of SJSU football and basketball, Hopkirk believes he may be the only fan who has seen every SJSU men’s post-season basketball game since he first enrolled at SJSU in the late 1960s.

In 1987, John met his wife, Anne Murphy, a University of San Francisco graduate. Anne has embraced John’s passion for SJSU athletics and the couple has traveled all over the country to watch the Spartans play.

“I have been following Spartan football for over 50 years. It has brought me much joy, and we have made many great friends through our common love of Spartan football,” said Hopkirk. “I received a great education from San Jose State, and Anne and I thought we needed to give back to the university to show our appreciation. I hope our gift inspires others to do the same.

“San Jose State must have the facilities in place to attract the best and brightest student-athletes,” Hopkirk continued. “Hopefully our donation will enhance Spartan football’s chance to be a championship program andresult in many more talented student-athletes proudly earning their diplomas from San Jose State University.”

“This critical project will have a major impact on Spartan football and our entire athletics program, as well as the game-day experience for our students and all who attend our games,” stated Paul Lanning, vice president for university advancement and CEO of the Tower Foundation. “Building a modern football operations center that revitalizes CEFCU Stadium is our most urgent fundraising priorities, and we’re thrilled to see two of our greatest fans make such a generous commitment to this project.”

“I am so grateful for John and Anne’s tremendous commitment and generosity to support and build a championship football program at San Jose State,” added head football coach Brent Brennan. “Their gift provides us with a critical recruiting tool, enhances the student-athlete experience and helps SJSU compete in the Mountain West. I can’t thank John and Anne enough for their commitment to the program.”
