Sports Headlines with London Marq: Florida teams scrambling to find places to play during Irma; Will LeBron sign with Lakers soon

noaa.gov photo: Hurricane Irma making it’s way to Florida Keys by Sunday

On Sports Headline with London:

1 How bad will Hurricane Irma impact the Miami Dolphins, Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays and Bucs, Dolphins are already to scheduled to play their games in Los Angeles.

2 The Arizona Diamondbacks have a great streak going with 12 games in a row they’ve scored 78 runs and allowed 25 runs in those 62 games

3 Can the Lakers break through? The Lakers are pursuing Paul George and this all depends on what happens with the Thunder and will LeBron be joining the Lakers? It’s looking like it will happen for after Kyrie Irving left LeBron feels like there’s nothing left in Cleveland.

4 The San Francisco 49ers have shown some signs of improvement but can they get by the Carolina Panthers Sunday. Cam Newton and that offense will be a tough task.

5 The Oakland Raiders face the Tennessee Titans and quarterback Marcus Mariota and this should be a great match up facing Raider quarterback Derek Carr

San Francisco 49ers Podcast Joe Lami: McCaffrey biggest chance to light it up against 49ers; defense could be keying on McCaffrey

On the 49ers podcast:

For Stanford alums San Francisco 49ers linebacker Solomon Thomas and Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey this should be fun to watch them to watch the two buddies playing each other but once they hit the field they’ll be competing something fierce. McCaffrey got the MVP last season with Stanford and the Panthers look really good going into this opener this weekend.

The whole thing about McCaffrey is that he’s coming off a first round draft and he’s got great credentials. He’s an explosive player and he pretty much could own the team. He’ll be catching the ball in the back field and playing in the slot and of course he’s a running back so McCaffrey is someone who is all the things that he was at Stanford and he’ll just have to showcase it when he takes the field at Carolina on Sunday.

Oakland Raiders Podcast with Joe Hawkes Beamon: Carr and Mariota haven’t spent much time on the field together but they will Sunday in what could be a shootout

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) talks with offensive coordinator Todd Downing before an NFL preseason football game against the Seattle Seahawks in Oakland, Calif. Downing has spent the past two years building up a relationship with Carr as his quarterbacks coach. The two play golf, talk current events and most importantly immerse themselves in all aspects of football. With Downing heading into his first game as NFL play-caller following an offseason promotion to coordinator, the hope is the strength of that relationship will pay big dividends on the field. On the Raiders Podcast with J Hawkes:

The Oakland Raiders open up the regular season on Sunday in Tennessee. What’s been impressive about the Raiders is how their offense has come together . Their receivers are coming together with Cordarelle Patterson and Michael Crabtree. They’re solid with running backs Marshawn Lynch and Jalen Richard they’ve improved their running game before they get started. They also have an arsenal of wide receivers Amari Cooper and Seth Roberts.

Marcus Mariota will get the start for the Titans and hopes to start his career as successfully as the Oakland Raiders Derek Carr did with the likes of a start that Carr had going 12-3 before getting injured. During that 15 game period Carr threw for 28 touchdowns and six interceptions. Carr is favored to lead the AFC is passing. The Titans will most likely run the ball and Mariota has a lot of confidence in running backs DeMarco Muarry and Derrick Henry. This one Joe predict will be a shootout.

On the program discussions on the rebuilding in the off season for the San Francisco Giants, manager Bruce Bochy will look to his farm system for prospects and the team will look at who will stay or who they can deal. Even amongst people who will remain nameless within the Giants organization there’s even been talk to move Joe Panik you could always find a second baseman because they’re easy to find why would anyone give you much in return for Panik?

This is someone you want to keep around defense up the middle is important and if your give Brandon Crawford the opportunity to work together for five years they will be a better double play combination than Jose Uribe and Robby Thompson were in the 90s. Panik is a player that reminds you of Thompson a lot. Who could forget that double play that Panik made in the 2014 World Series and Panik made one of the best double plays we’ve ever seen.

San Francisco Giants-Chicago White Sox series preview: Giants look to build for next year; Moore shows improvement in recent starts

The Giants won a road game against Colorado, which is always a cause for celebration, no matter what kind of season they are having.

The Giants will now try to build on that positive momentum and carry it into Chicago, as they start a three-game series on Friday night against the White Sox.

Besides having won its last game, more good news for the Giants comes in the fact that the White Sox are reeling at this point. In fact, Chicago is coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians.

Ironically, the White Sox lost their most recent contest by the same score, 11-2, as the Giants won theirs. They have also lost eight of their last 10 games dating back to Aug. 29.

Furthermore, Chicago is in the same overall state this season as the Giants. The White Sox are in last place in the AL Central with a 54-85 mark, which puts them 29 ½ games out of first place.

To keep their trend going, the Giants are going to lean on Matt Moore (4-13), who has this month to show the Giants that he is worthy to be in the starting rotation next season after a very dismal 2017 campaign, by far the worst of his seven-year career.

However, he has shown some signs of coming out of it. In his last outing, he went two scoreless innings last Sunday against St. Louis, during which he gave up only a hit to go along with a strikeout.

He will take the hill opposite Chicago righty Lucas Giolito (2-1), who has won his last two starts and has surrendered only a run on six hits combined in the process. He has also walked only four and struck out 14 batters, including a 10-strikeout outing against Tampa Bay in his last outing on Sept. 3.

Preview of the Oakland A’s vs Houston Astros series this weekend in Oaklnd

OAKLAND- The A’s are off on Thursday as they are still trying to figure out why they lost eight of the last nine games. The A’s salvaged a win against the LA Angels Wednesday but now have to face the Houston Astros for a four-game series starting Friday night at the Coliseum.

The A’s are in the midst of rebuilding the team for the future. They have jettisoned veteran players such as Stephen Vogt, Adam Rosales, Rajai Davis, Sean Doolittle, Ryan Madson, John Axford, and Sonny Gray. Gray’s trade was a mystery as the team had control for two more years, but they received three prospects from the Yankees. Two of the prospects are pitchers, but two of the three players are currently on the DL. The A’s young position players have performed well and appear to be in the mix for next year. Matt Chapman, Matt Olson, Chad Pinder, Boog Powell, Ryon Healy, and Bruce Maxwell will be the building blocks for the revival of the A’s. They need to improve the pitching, both in the starting rotation and the bullpen.

The A’s are looking at the model that the Houston Astros used to build their team from a team that lost over 100 games in three straight seasons to a team with the best record in the American League. The Astros started the rebuild with second baseman Jose Altuve. Altuve is leading the AL in hitting, and the Astros have teamed him with the terrific shortstop Carlos Correa. Correa was injured but is now off the DL.

George Springer is an All-Star and left field is held down by our old friend Josh Reddick. Reddick is having a great year in Houston and is hitting over. 300. There are no easy out in the Houston lineup. Jake MArisnick and Cameron Maybin are sharing the duties in center field. Marwin Gonzalez has given the ‘s fits over the years. Yuri Guriel is at first base, Brian McCann handles the catching, and the veteran Carlos Beltran is the DH.

The Astros pitching rotation has struggled at times, but the Astros made a trade late in August to bring in Justin Verlander. Verlander beat the Seattle Mariners in his first start as an Astro but will not pitch this weekend. The Astros’ starters will be Collin McHugh Friday night, Charlie Morton (11-6) and Brad Peacock (10-2) will pitch on Saturday. Peacock is winless in his last five starts and will be heading to the bullpen to make room for Verlander in the rotation. Dallas Keuchel (12-3), the former Cy Young award winner will go on Sunday.

The A’s Jharel Cotton pitches Friday night. Cotton is 7-10 but has pitched better in his two or three outings. Daniel Mengden(0-1) will make his first start since June 3rd. Mengden went on the DL and has been at Nashville since coming off the injury list. Daniel Gossett(3-8) will pitch the second game of the double header. Gossett had a tough outing in Seattle last week. He went just 3/23rds innings and gave up three runs and seven hits. Gossett has not completed four innings in his last five starts. Kendall Graveman (4-4) faces the Astros on Sunday. Graveman did not have a  good outing last Monday against the Angels. He gave up five runs in five innings of work. The A’s rallied to get him off the hook.

The Astros lead the Cleveland Indians by 2 1/2 games for the best record in the AL. The team with the best record has home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Indians are red hot right now. They have won fourteen games in a row and want to head into the playoffs as the team that no one wants to face. The Astros want the road to the World Series to go through Houston. They want to sweep the A’s this weekend. Bob Melvin and Company will give the Astros everything they can handle. The A’s may be down, but there is no quit in this team. Just ask Mike Scioscia and the Angels.

Oakland A’s Podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Fallout over stolen signs debate still a an issue in MLB

Oakland Athletics’ Matt Chapman, right, is tossed from the game by home plate umpire Mike Everitt after Chapman argued with Los Angeles Angels catcher Juan Graterol during the fourth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, in Oakland, Calif. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez)

By Jerry Feitelberg

OAKLAND–It started with Oakland A’s third baseman Matt Chapman standing in at the plate on Wednesday afternoon when Los Angeles Angels catcher Juan Graterol got into a firey exchange with Chapman. Graterol jumped up out of his crotch and started jawing at Chapman over Chapman looking back and telling Chapman to stop stealing signs. Then A’s manager Bob Melvin came running out of the dugout wondering what was happening? Melvin is talking to Everitt and he goes back to the dugout and they thought it was settled.

Graterol was still chirping at Chapman and Chapman gave it back to him and that’s when Everitt tossed him. Chapman wasn’t raising his voice he was getting heated and he didn’t say any bad words but he got tossed for not letting it go and that is what happened on Wednesday. When A’s centerfielder Mark Canha was at the plate Graterol was accusing Canha of stealing signs. So when Chapman came to the plate he has something to say about Graterol’s treatment of Canha.

Giants ride Panik’s insane series to win; SF road trip avoids going 0-for with 11-3 win over Rocks

By Jeremy Harness

On Wednesday, the Giants experienced a new low – yeah, there was a new one – but there was also a high that the team has never experienced before.

Second baseman Joe Panik absolutely torched the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday with five hits to point the Giants toward a 11-3 win at Coors Field, a place that his team, even when things are going much better, have found it very difficult to get wins over the years.

In the process, Panik tied a franchise record by collecting 11 hits in a three-game series, the first time that has occurred since 1995. He also saw his average climb to .285 and drive in a pair of runs and scored three more.

The Giants got the hit parade going off Colorado starter Kyle Freeland (11-10, 3.89 ERA) very quickly on Wednesday, racing out to a 5-0 lead in the first four innings, including a first inning that saw rookie Austin Slater single in a pair of runs.

Panik had a pair of doubles, both of which drove in runs and added to the Giants’ lead. In addition to panic, four other Giants had multi-hit games, including center fielder Gorkys Hernandez, who had a pair of hits that drove in three runs.

Meanwhile, Johnny Cueto (7-7, 4.54 ERA) went five innings and surrendered only a run on five hits, walking only one batter and striking out seven, picking up his first win since June 30 at Pittsburgh. When Cueto exited the game, four relievers combined to give up two runs on three hits.

Now for the low.

Pablo Sandoval, whom the Giants welcomes back with open arms this season, set a new franchise record on Wednesday by going hitless over 38 straight at-bats. His last hit came on Aug. 25, when he singled against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

1 How important it was for the Giants pitcher Jeff Samardjiza to win the NL Player of the Week Award. Considering how bad things have gone for the Giants that was one of the illuminating moments for the ball club

2 Samardjiza pitched a three hit shutout against the Padres on Aug 28th then over seven innings then threw a shutout against the Cardinals

3 The Giants catcher Buster Posey is day to day after getting hit in the hand from a foul tip, the Giants no doubt will miss him out of the line up

4 The Giants continue this match up with Colorado Bochy wants to get out of this road swing with at least a win the team has lost every game on this trip
