SAN FRANCISCO-On the same day where North Carolina native Gaylord Perry became the fifth member of the San Francisco Giants to receive a statue, a fellow North Carolinian, who may have a statue aligning AT&T Park one day pitched a brilliant game.
Madison Bumgarner went seven innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, while walking and striking out eight to pickup his 11th win of the season, as the Giants defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 before a crowd of 41,456, the 463rd consecutive regular season sellout at AT&T Park.
This was the first win for Bumgarner since July 10, as he was 0-3 with a 3.18 earned run average since the All-Star break.
Denard Span drove in the first two Giants runs in the bottom of the second inning, as he singled to score Hunter Pence and Joe Panik. Pence led off the inning with a single, and then went to third on a Panik double with one out.
After Bumgarner struck out for the second out of the inning, Span planted a Kevin Gausman pitch into centerfield for the first two runs of the game.
Span added another two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning for his third and fourth runs batted in the game.
The Giants extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Span hit his second two-run single of the evening that scored Eduardo Nunez and Panik.
The four runs batted in are the second most this season after the five he drove in on Opening Day against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on April 4.
It was a tough loss for Gausman, who dropped to 3-10 on the season, as he went four innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while walking six and striking out nine.
There was a bizarre play in the top of the sixth inning, as Adam Jones tried to lay a bunt attempt that rolled fair and Bumgarner threw to Brandon Belt for the first out of the inning. Jones immediately went to the ground, as he ball ricocheted to hit him on the right hand.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter came out of the dugout to discuss the play with the umpiring crew, and they went to review the play. After a 1:12 review, the play stood and Jones was called out.
Bumgarner then walked J.J. Hardy and gave up a long double to Manny Machado after the ball bounced off Span’s glove and to the wall. Luckily for the Giants, Hardy was held at third base.
After the double to Hardy, Bumgarner then regrouped to get Mark Trumbo to pop out to Buster Posey, and then walked Jonathan Schoop to load the bases; however he got out of the jam, as he struck out Chris Davis looking to end the threat.
With his double in the bottom of the eighth inning, Angel Pagan extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Sergio Romo got the first two outs via strikeouts, but was unable to get the third out, as he walked Davis.
Javier Lopez then came on to replace Romo, and promptly gave up a hit to Matt Wieters, a walk to Nolan Reimold. Ryan Flaherty broke up the shutout, as he lined a two-run single to center field that scored Davis and Wieters.
Following the Flaherty single, Bruce Bochy replaced Lopez with Santiago Casilla, and on one pitch, Jones grounded out to Nunez, who stepped on third to end the game.
