On the MLB podcast with Matt Harrington the Florida Marlins who broke the news of the death of former great boxer Muhammad Ali some two hours before the Ali Family and the media got some criticism for that. Florida team president David Samson said that there was “no error” and that the Marlins were close with Ali who threw out the first ball on opening day during the inaugural season of the Marlins new downtown ball park.
There was no ill intention on the part of the Marlins showing parts of the career and life of Ali on the scoreboard during Friday night’s game before the Ali family or media made their announcements. Samson said that he got the information from a member of the Ali family and they were ok with the Marlins letting their fans in attendance know about the passing of the boxing great.
