Kings: new building, new attitude, new logo

kings logosby Charlie O. Mallonee

The Sacramento Kings unveiled their new logo package today at an event held at outside the new Golden 1 Center. This is the first update of the corporate logos since 1994.

The new logos pay tribute to the logos of the Cincinnati Royals, Kansas City Kings and the original Sacramento Kings but retains the royal purple color that was established in 1994.

“When the Kings moved to Sacramento in 1985, the city was transformed. Today, we aim to do it again,” said Owner and Chairman Vivek Ranadive. “This brand kicks off a new era for our franchise as we move into the most technologically-advanced, most environmentally-friendly arena in the world. As Sacramento becomes the next great American city, this identity honors our heritage while moving us forward.”

Some of the Kings thunder was stolen by sportslogos.net who revealed the designs on Saturday on their website. Sportslogos.net discovered the logos when the NBA filed for copyright protection in Europe. The website was not able to disclose the color scheme for the logos because the copyright filing only had to reveal the logo design in black and while.

For fans who just cannot wait to have the latest Kings gear, items with the new logo designs are available online today.

Giants, Casilla hold on, down the Padres 5-4 in series opener

By Morris Phillips

In a ballgame that took nearly four hours to work through a full nine innings on Monday night, the top of the eighth took on a life of its own.

Seven Padres’ hitters saw pitches from four Giants’ relievers as the home team’s comfortable 5-2 lead shrunk to a run, and the game became potentially a one-pitch affair. In the absence of familiar names like Romo, Affeldt and Lopez, anxious fans and impatient seagulls got initial looks at Derek Law and Josh Osich, and another look at Hunter Strickland, now three seasons into attempting to lock down a defined role in a rapidly changing bullpen.

Woven deep in the web of baseball strategy was manager Bruce Bochy’s faith that his young arms can evolve into a unit as trustworthy as those on his World Series teams sooner rather than later.

“These kids are going to have hiccups,” Bochy confessed.

“They’ll learn from all this.”

Strickland opened the inning and faltered, charged with both Padres’ runs, then Law saw just one batter, hanging a breaking ball to pinch-hitter Brett Wallace, who singled, putting runners at first and third with one out. Osich picked both up by fanning Jemile Weeks, the only batter he faced, and keeping the tying run at third base.

Afterwards, Bochy explained that had Osich faltered, and allowed the Padres to tie the game, he would have opted for another young arm, Mike Broadway. But with the Giants still clinging to a lead, it was time to turn to his most experienced arm, Santiago Casilla, who navigated through the final four outs, giving the Giants a hard-earned 5-4 win.

With the Dodgers falling at home to the Marlins, the win helped negate the effects of this rough home stand in which the home team has won just three of eight, while pulling the Giants within 2 ½ games of the division lead.

To prevail, the Giants got contributions from all over, from Denard Span’s big catch at the center field wall, robbing Matt Kemp of extra bases, to Madison Bumgarner’s gutty performance in which he pitched into the seventh inning. The Giants broke their power drought (just three home runs in their previous 10 games) with Hunter Pence and Buster Posey going deep.

The Giants had 12 hits and that spelled doom for former A’s reliever Drew Pomeranz, who has been an early surprise in San Diego as a starter. On Monday, Pomeranz couldn’t get out of the fifth inning, allowing seven hits, three walks, and four runs.

Bumgarner got the start for the Giants and for once wasn’t matched against the opponent’s ace. The youthful veteran wasn’t that jazzed about his own performance, but left grateful Bochy kept him in the game into the seventh inning, throwing 114 pitches in the process. When the bullpen wobbled and swerved, but didn’t break, Bumgarner was able to pick up his second win of the season.

Angel Pagan contributed three hits, knocking in a pair of runs out of the nine hole to raise his batting average to a healthy .356. The veteran again hit behind Bumgarner, but that’s no slight for a guy who’s made plenty of sacrifices this season. Instead, Pagan trumpeted the quirky strategy.

“After the second inning, it’s just like having another leadoff hitter,” Pagan explained.

Joe Panik contributed three hits, and Posey had a pair of hits and two runs knocked in.

The Giants have Johnny Cueto on the mound Tuesday looking for this fourth win opposed by James Shields, who’s winless in three starts.

The Tigers send the A’s down to their third straight loss.

by Jerry Feitelberg

photo credit abcnews.com: After a fly that was miscued in the outfield lights Detroit outfielder Tyler Collins heard a rain of criticism from the Tiger fans in which Collins reciprocated by flipping off the fans in a game the Tigers were leading the Oakland A’s at the time 6-0 at CoAmerica Park in Detroit on Monday night

It was not a good night for the A’s as the lost 7-3 to the Detroit Tigers in the first game of a four-game series. The loss was the third in a row for the A’s and evened their season mark at 10-10. They are still in first place in the AL West, but they have company sharing the lead with the Texas Rangers also at 10-10 and the Seattle Mariners, who are at 9-9.

Kendall Graveman was hoping to repeat his outstanding performance last time out as he beat the Yankees in New York. Things did not go well for Kendall. He gave up a solo home run to Miguel Cabrera. Miggy came into the game hitting just .206 and was in a 0-for-13 slump. The Tigers scored the second run of the game in the second inning. Graveman did not make it out of the fifth. With one out, he gave up back-to-back singles. Cabrera made him walk the plank as he blasted his second home run of the night. Victor Martinez followed with a solo homer, and the Tigers led 6-0. Bob Melvin lifted him with two out and two on. The Tigers added another run and the A’s reached Zimmerman for three runs. Only one of the runs was earned. The Tigers win 7-3.

Jordan Zimmerman, the price free agent acquisition, improved his record to 4-0. Zimmerman pitched 24 1/3rd scoreless innings to start the season.  This was the best start ever by a Tiger pitcher. The A’s runs were driven in bu Billy Burns, Yonder Alonso and Mark Canha.

Game two of the series will see Rich Hill on the mound for Oakland and he will be opposed by the Tigers’ Mike Pelfrey. Hill will be seeking his third win of the year.

Game time will be 4:10 PM PT in Detroit.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal elated Rabb to stay in school another year great news for hoops program

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris Phillips Ivan Rabb has decided to stay for his sophomore year this is great news for Cal and great news for Ivan Rabb. Rabb is comfortable to play another year at Cal rather than enter the NBA draft this May. This decision is contrary to what a number of collegiate players would do sacrifice school and enter the pros when the opportunity presents itself.

Rabb is blessed with this type of talent to temporarily put joining the NBA on hold. It’s good for Rabb he’s local coming from O’Dowd High School in Oakland and continuing on at Cal. Rabb is comfortable in his own skin and he’s comfortable being where he’s at. He’s comfortable being a college scholar, he’s in class, is academic and follows his schedule all that stuff.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Raiders meet with Vegas officials for possible move stadium and NFL approval still on the table

file photo: Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis and Las Vegas Sands Group CEO Sheldon Adelson

On That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary the Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis’ efforts to move the team just took an uptick. Davis will have meeting with UNLV and the Sands Group Hotel and Casino officials on Thursday. The issue of financing a new stadium in Las Vegas could be solved soon. If financing can be found and it’s likely with the casinos at hand that the reality of the Raiders moving to Sin City could happen. There is the issue of the NFL owners wanting to move the Raiders to Vegas as well and we’ll hear a lot more from the owners as this story develops. A recent financial report this week stated that Sands Group CEO and Chairman Sheldon Adelson and the Sands had a loss of 10 percent as announced on April 21. The group also said they suffered losses from the day before April 20th. The Sands which owns their newest casino The Macau recently finished below their expectations at five percent. The Macau is counting on their stock portfolio to help be a trend as their stock is up at plus 21 percent and trading is up at 15 times in 2016. The NFL if it was to consider Vegas for the Raiders would expect any group backing the team to have a stable financial backing before considering any move.

I remember when Vegas just had a few casinos and hosted the Rat Pack of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Don Rickles, Sammy Davis Jr, and Joey Bishop. Now it’s a Disneyland for adults and adding an NFL team will just sweeten the pot for the gambling mecca.

Every time you go to Vegas you see folks on tour from overseas from Germany, France, and many other countries as it’s becoming a destination and for it to have a NFL team coming there the league won’t oppose it and it’s not like it’s baseball it’s not 81 home games there, football only has ten home games per season. The Raiders are desperate to leave the Oakland Coliseum and it’s obvious that’s the Raiders are not going to get a new stadium built in Oakland and owner Mark Davis wants out of the city.
