That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Dodgers TV-Radio play by play man Vin Scully wants to do his last broadcast in San Francisco

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo credit foxsports1360.com: Dodgers announcer Vin Scully whose planned retirement will end in San Francisco in September
SAN FRANCISCO–Maybe somebody already forgot what legendary Dodgers play by play man said during the Dodgers Fanfest at Dodger Stadium, before the season got started, about three months ago. Scully hasn’t traveled much in recent seasons, but would like to make at least three in-state road trips with the Dodgers in his final season of broadcasting for the team, including his final regular season game in the home of the Dodgers’ biggest rival at  AT&T Park vs the San Francisco Giants, Sunday October 2.

Scully was one of the star attractions for the just under 25,000 people who came to Dodger Stadium for 2016 Dodgers FanFest on a Saturday back in January.
“As a little kid who grew up literally in the Polo Grounds and was an avid Giants fan, I think I would love to finish in a Dodgers-Giants game,” Scully said. “God willing, it will work out. We’ll see.”

Since he announced his intentions to call the last game of his career(and last game of the season)on Sunday, October 2, the 88 year old legend had a street name after him in Los Angeles and was rendered a great tribute on Opening Day at Dodger Stadium. On the 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers Media Guide, he is featured alone, a picture of a young Scully, who began his career in 1950, when he began his Hall of Fame broadcasting career. At that time the Dodgers played in Brooklyn. He grew up in Upper Manhattan, near the Polo Grounds where the New York Giants played before they move to San Francisco in 1957 to play at Seals Stadium, later at cold Candlestick Park.

Scully also said that if the Dodgers make the playoffs this season. he might be willing to broadcast a postseason game on radio because it is his final season., however he said he would not want to broadcast a World Series game because he feels it would be unfair to current broadcasters Rick Monday and Charlie Steiner.

Although it is basically unheard for the Giants to honor a Dodger, it should be a ‘no brainer’ for the San Francisco Giants to honor Mr.Scully during that final weekend of the season at AT&T Park. Considering he was a Giants fan even before the Giants where in San Francisco, that makes even more sense for a narrative about his connection with the Giants. He has broadcasted for the Dodgers from 1950 unitl 2016, that’s 66 consecutive seasons. Last time I saw him I told him he was the only guy I ever met that had worked for the same company for that long. He laughed, and then said in his inimitable style “what do you mean by work?” A truly professional and delightful man, a living example that proves the saying that if you enjoy what you do and it brings you happiness, you going to enjoy a long life

Mr. Vin Scully is the best baseball play by play man who ever lived.

Golden State Warriors podcast with David Zizmor: Memphis was certainly no match for Warriors Wed as opposed to last Saturday

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–The game of the season for the Golden State Warriors after winning their last two in San Antonio and Memphis was predictable on Wednesday night because once they got 72 and you just had to figure coming home for the last game they were going to get that 73 hell or high water. Except for that one point win over the Grizzlies last weekend 100-99 on the road. The Warriors have done pretty well against Memphis they had the 50 point win over the Grizzlies at the beginning of this season.

They crushed the Grizzlies in post season last year and this year’s team didn’t even have Mark Gasol or Mike Connolly their two best players who were down due to injuries. They were definitely fielding a depleted Memphis squad to top it off Memphis was already coming off a big loss to the Clippers Tuesday night as they were on a back to back nights.

It’s official: the George Karl era has ended

IMG_2244

by Charlie O. Mallonee

SACRAMENTO–In the worst kept personnel move ever, the Sacramento Kings have fired head coach and future Hall of Famer George Karl. Multiple media sources – including this one – had been reporting that Karl would be dismissed since Wednesday morning.

The termination comes as no surprise to anyone who has been following the Kings for the past 18 months. DeMarcus Cousins did not want the team to hire Karl in the first place. Karl was almost fired over the summer for trying initiate a trade for Cousins, and vice president and general manager Vlade Divac wanted to terminate Karl in February when the team was in midst of turmoil. This was a relationship that was doomed from the very beginning.

“After evaluating the team’s performance this season, I determined it was necessary to move forward with a new voice from the head coaching position,” said Divac. “I have a great deal of respect and admiration for George and his accomplishments throughout his nearly 30 years in the NBA. On behalf of everyone in the Kings organization, I thank him for the contributions made during his time in Sacramento and wish him good fortune in the future.”

This will be the first time the  Vivek Ranadive ownership group has a head of basketball operations in place before hiring a head coach. Michael Malone and George Karl were hired before the general manager was in place and the results have been disastrous and resulted in both coaches being fired.

There have been reports that the minority owners have been upset over the handling of the hiring and firing coaches by Ranadive. For instance, Karl walks away with a reported $6.5-million due him for the remainder of his contract. Investors hate to pay “dead money” to anyone knowing they will have to pay out big dollars to the new coach that takes Karl’s place.

The assumption is that Divac will have heavy input into the hiring of the next coach. Not that Ranadive will be left out of process but he will probably allow the experts to do their job in order to avoid another hiring fiasco.

The coaching merry-go-round has become a joke in the national press that covers the NBA. Ryen Rusillo   of ESPN Radio spent almost five minutes decrying the coaching situation in Sacramento as ridiculous during his nationwide show on Wednesday. That is just one example of ridicule that is being flung at the Kings organization’s inability to hire and retain a head coach.

Hiring the right coach for this situation is critical. First, the coach must be able to adapt to the direction of the team as set by Divac who is said to want a more defensive approach on the floor. Secondly, the new head man (or woman) must be able to adapt to the available personnel. Finally, DeMarcus Cousins must buy in on whoever the Kings want to hire. That is not a good thing for management but they have empowered Cousins and will have to obtain his cooperation to make it work for the next coach.

Some of the names that are being floated are coaches with experience. Ex-Houston coach Kevin McHale, ex-Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek, former Bulls and Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro, ex-Cleveland coach David Blatt, former Warriors head man Mark Jackson and Charlotte assistant coach Patrick Ewing have been mentioned as possible candidates for the job. The search will also include top assistant coaches from around the league who are looking for their first job as a head coach.

The names of Tom Thibodeau and Scott Brooks have come up but both are expected to take higher profile jobs.

The interview process is expected to take some time because the Kings cannot afford to make another major hiring mistake as they move into the new arena.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: It’s been a long time coming since the 90s for Golden State to get here

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez
USA Today photo: Stephen Curry put on a show on Wednesday night at Oracle Arena against the Memphis Grizzlies
OAKLAND–The Golden State Warriors ended the regular season with 73 wins and 9 losses, that is the best record ever during a regular season for a team in the National Basketball Association., They’re better then the record of the great Chicago Bulls of 1995-96, the Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen teams. Warriors coach Don Nelson could only dream of such a season, anybody in the NBA, not only Nelson, can only dream of having a team loosing nine games on an 82 game season.
As a person who covered and traveled with the Golden State Warriors in the 1990’s I can only admired this 2016-17 team in awe of such an accomplishment. Let us not forget that it comes on the season following their defending of their reigning title of 2014-15. Few teams in history, in any sport, have defended a title with such numbers. Now the Warriors had some great players in their history from Wilt Chamberlain, to Rick Barry and Nate”The Great”:Thurmond, but what Stephen Curry has done with this team and a cast of others, who actually check their egos at the gate, it is amazing.
Forget the NBA, this is a season almost impossible to compare to any team in any other professional league in this country. Defending a title, I think the Warriors had the best season of a-n-y-b-o-d-y. And actually the fans they have recruited during these past seasons is unprecedented here in the Bay Area. Truth-be-said, the Warriors always enjoyed great fan support in the Bay Area, as many years as they never won anything, no other pro-sports team here in Northern California can compare to the support the Warriors have enjoyed.
If they played at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, next to the Oracle Arena, they could have filled the Coliseum, even the seats on the upper-deck that are permanently closed, would be open and selling like hot cakes.
I am very happy for the Warriors success, they make the Bay Area proud, and even though they might move to San Francisco in the future, they are a Bay Area team, congratulations to Mr.Peter Guber and Mr Joe Lacob for buying a team in distress a few years back and putting together one of the jewels of sports.

Warriors capture 73rd win in dominant fashion

By: Eric He

sfgate.com: Golden State Warrior Stephen Curry beams after the game winner that put the Warriors as the winningest team in NBA history on Wednesday night

The Golden State Warriors achieved on Wednesday a record few thought would ever be broken — a 73rd win, accomplished in typical, dominant fashion with a 125-104 win over the Grizzlies at Oracle Arena.

In doing so, they finish the season with a 73-9 record, one win better than 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls team that recorded 72 wins.

Stephen Curry added another accomplishment  to cap off a spectacular regular season, dropping 46 points and 10 3-pointers, eclipsing 400 3-pointers made on the campaign.

The Warriors piled up 70 points in the first half, taking a 20-point lead into halftime. The game was essentially decided early on, when Curry made three consecutive 3-pointers to give the Warriors a double-digit first quarter advantage.

The Oracle crowd, raucous as usual, helped the Warriors blow the Grizzlies away. Golden State broke the 100-point mark late in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Curry.

By the end, the buzzer sounded and the confetti stream, capping off the greatest regular season in basketball history.

The Warriors’ march toward the championship will begin on Saturday against the Rockets at 12:30 p.m.

Kings Lose again as Karl Awaits Axe

By Tony Renteria

The Kings lose again to end a season with some promise on another disappointing note as they fall to the Houston Rockets 116-81.   The Kings played with DeMarcus Cousins who was inactive and Rudy Gay  (rest) and Rajon Rondo who did not even travel to Texas for the last game.

George Karl may be fired as of this  hitting print.  Under his leadership the Sacramento Kings have become the talk of TMZ and almost the joke of the NBA.   On a wonderful evening of NBA basketball as the Warriors made history with 73 wins and an aging Kobe Bryant threw down 60 points in his send off, Kings fans are left with a season full of lack luster play and disappointment.

The Kings head into a new arena next fall and hopefully they can leave the baggage they have build up in Sleep Train Arena,  what would The Kings of of ten years ago have to say to this team.   Once this was a franchise built on hussle and teamwork, now is a reality show that has reach epic portions.

Cousins the best at his position in the league plays when he feels like it,  Rondo designs his own plays and Karl looks like he gave up in November.  There is not stat line to help make this look like a moral victory.    It is just another loss in an other wise lost season.

Hopefully Vlade Divac can find the person to help him make the basketball decisions to right this ship before a loyal fan base is lost forever.

San Francisco Giants Wednesday game wrap: Arenado bombs Giants out

By Jeremy Harness

photo credit mlb.nbcsports.com: The Colorado Rockies Nolan Arenado had two base knocks on Wednesday night against the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field in Denver

Jake Peavy was hit extremely hard at times in his previous start against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Friday, and the same things happened on Wednesday.

The difference is that he was pitching at home on Friday and not in Colorado, a place which did not allow him to get away with any mistakes.

Nolan Arenado made sure of that on Wednesday, belting two homers and knocking in an eye-opening seven runs in taking down the Giants, 10-6, inside of Coors Field.

Arenado entered Wednesday’s game with a .313 batting average, and that is expected to be raised a little bit when tomorrow comes around.

However, it wasn’t just Arenado who was swinging a hot bat. Three of his teammates also had three hits apiece, including Trevor Story, who is undoubtedly having a monster start to his rookie season.

Story, who already has seven home runs in the first eight games of the year, did not go deep on Wednesday but did leg out a pair of triples and drove in a run in the process.

Pitchers typically don’t have very long outings in Coors Field, and these two hurlers were no different. Peavy lasted only four innings and gave up six runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out five. His counterpart, Jordan Lyles, was not too far behind him, going only 4 2/3 innings and surrendering five runs on six hits, walking two hitters and striking out one.

Quakes Rock Red Bulls

By: Joe Lami

photo credit empireofsoccer.com: Bradley Wright Phillips of the New York Red Bulls knows it’s curtains as the San Jose Earthquakes deliver a 2-0 shutout against the Bulls on Wednesday night at Avaya Stadium in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif.—On the same night the Golden State Warriors won their 73rd game of the season, and Kobe Bryant walked off the court for the final time, the San Jose Earthquakes quietly picked up three more points in the Western Conference with a 2-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night at Avaya Stadium.

The weekday match was huge for Dominic Kinnear and company, as they move up to fourth place in the Western Conference, just three points shy of first-place Dallas.

“I don’t want to get to philosophical, but as I was driving into the game today, I was thinking there’s no such thing as a bad win. There’s good wins and bad ties and all loses are bad, so anytime we can get a win and we didn’t play our best tonight, but in the end, three points is huge. To pick up wins midweek. When you look around and other teams are dropping points and you’re at the top of the standings, it gives you confidence.”

San Jose started their onslaught in the 33rd minute after a great chance by Chris Wondolowski after a Bulls midfielder slipped and coughed the ball up. Wondo nearly got the scoring started by missed on the breakaway just past the lower left part of the post.

Just six minutes later, Fatai Alashe opened up the scoring for the Quakes, netting his first of the season. The play was set up by Shea Salinas before Matias Perez Garcia got the ball to Alashe in the box. Alashe ripped a right footed shot that got deflected before finding the back of the net.

San Jose extended their lead in the 55th minute when Wondolowski netted his league leading 5th goal of the campaign in his sixth game. The header was knocked in after a beautiful cross from Salinas, who picked up the assist on the play.

Once again, the pitch became a factor at Avaya Stadium, as the Red Bulls had trouble staying on their feet as the game slipped away from them.  “We knew that coming here and we watched previous games and saw guys slipping all over. We warned our guys about it and talked to them about it,” said Red Bulls coach, Jesse Marsch. “With everything that’s going on, you have to make your own breaks. Part of making your own breaks, you have to play with no fear. We aren’t getting many right now and we have to find a way to will ourselves to a victory”.

The Red Bulls continue to struggle, sitting at the basement of the Eastern Conference with just three points.

San Jose continues their tough stretch of games on Saturday, as they travel to Portland to take on the struggling Timbers. “It doesn’t really matter who you’re playing. You just want to pick up points whenever you can,” adds Kinnear.

Get out the brooms, The Angels sweep the A’s

by Jerry Feitelberg

AP photo: Fear the Beard the LA Angels Matt Shoemaker makes work of the Oakland A’s and did wonders for lowering his 18.00 ERA with a win over the A’s on Wednesday at the Oakland Coliseum

OAKLAND–The A’s entered the game with the Angels hoping to rebound from Tuesday night’s loss and get a much-needed win. That, however, did not happen as the Angels defeated the A’s 5-1 to sweep the three-game series. The Angels starter, Matt Shoemaker, entered the game with an ERA of 18.00, but he stopped the A’s cold. He went six innings and allowed just one hit. Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia used four more pitchers who allowed just two more hits. The A’s big blow was a home run by Marcus Semien that averted a shutout. Eric Surkamp pitched okay, and he was a bit wild as he walked four, hit a batter and uncorked a wild pitch. He threw ninety-six pitches in just four and 2/3rds innings of work. He left the game trailing 2-0, and he absorbed his first loss of the year.

The Angels drew first blood in the top of the third inning. Mike Trout singled to lead off the frame. He stole second to get into scoring position. Surkamp retired Albert Pujols and C.J.Cron but was not able to retire Kole Calhoun. Calhoun singled to right to drive in Trout.

In the top of the fifth, it was the Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun show again. Trout led off with a double to left. He advanced to third on an Eric Surkamp wild pitch and scored on a single off the bat of Kole Calhoun. A’s trail 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Angels’ starter Matt Shoemaker has been masterful allowing the A’s just one hit through the first five innings of play.

The Angels scored another run in the top of the eighth. That man, Kole Calhoun, continued to torment the A’s. Calhoun doubled to left and then scored on a single by Andrelton Simmons to increase the lead to three. Calhoun has three hits and two RBIs to lead the Halos attack. The A’s Marcus Semien led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to make it a 3-1 game. It was just the second hit of the game for Oakland. For Semien, it was his fourth home run of the year. He leads the A’s in that department.

The Angels put the game away in the ninth. With one out, former Athletic Craig Gentry singled. Mike Trout followed with his third of the afternoon to put men on at first and second. They advanced to second and third on a Liam Hendricks’ wild pitch. Albert Pujols singled to drive in both runners.  Angels in the driver’s seat 5-1 as the game heads into the bottom of the ninth.

Game Notes- The A’s have played seven games at home so far this year and have lost six of them. They won three in Seattle, and their record stands at 4-6. They face the defending World Champs, the Kansas City Royals for three games starting Friday night at the Coliseum. The A’s send lefty Rich Hill to the mound and he will be opposed by Kansas City’s Edinson Volquez. Game time will be at 7:05 PM Friday

Time of game was three hours and three minutes, and there was a small crowd of 11,216on hand to watch the proceedings.

Sharks And Kings Preview: Playoff Remix 2016

By Mary Walsh

photo credit docsportstalk.com: San Jose Sharks Joe Thornton and teammates will be in L.A. to try and take the Kings out of the first round of the playoffs starting Thursday

The San Jose Sharks will face the Los Angeles Kings Thursday, in game one, round one of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They say that lightning does not strike twice. A lot happens in a hockey game, and a playoff series can produce the same result in many different ways. But it is probably safe to predict that the Sharks will not win three games in a row and then lose four. The odds of that happening again are very slim indeed, and I don’t need to be a math genius to know that.

The Los Angeles Kings are probably the best first round opponent for the San Jose Sharks. The Kings are not only a “must play” for any team trying to get through the western conference, they also have a special place in San Jose’s heart. The last two seasons have been dark for San Jose, starting with their humiliation at the hands of the Kings two seasons ago. While the meek of heart would probably want to avoid Los Angeles entirely, few professional hockey players can be described as meek.

Two seasons is long enough to see any team change, even if change is not their objective. The Sharks have made several changes. Head coach Pete DeBoer brings a new angle to the Sharks’ game. The Kings have seen DeBoer’s Sharks several times this season, but they are nowhere near as familiar with them as they were with Todd McLellan’s team. DeBoer has coached against the Kings in the playoffs, when the New Jersey Devils faced them in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final. That was a long time ago, and he has a very different team now, except in one respect: the Kings are still the favorites to win.

Those expectations are a little bit strange. Even though the Sharks were embarrassed by their lost 3-0 lead in 2014, they did beat the Kings three times before losing. The Sharks also won the 2015-16 regular season series 3-2, going 3-1-1. The Kings have a terrible habit of starting slowly, in the regular season and the playoffs. That is a habit that is bound to trip them up eventually. It is far from unlikely that the Sharks could win this series.

The Kings have the home ice advantage over the Sharks, but that advantage has proven to be less and less significant over the past few seasons, not only for the Sharks but for most playoff teams. What has been true for the Sharks over the past couple of seasons is that they play better on the road. It is not a stretch to say that the Sharks have the “road advantage” in this series.

Wherever they play, the Sharks have every reason to be hungrier and angrier than the Kings. The Kings have won two Stanley Cup Championships. The Sharks have not gotten to the Final yet. If NHL parity is not a myth, it is the Sharks turn for a shot.

Both teams have made significant changes to their rosters since 2014. For the Sharks, Martin Jones and James Reimer are a more formidable goalie tandem than Antti Niemi and Alex Stalock were. Jones’ star is rising. He proved this season that he can be a reliable presence in net, and can even steal a game here and there. James Reimer has proven that he can gut out some pretty gruelling playoff games, and he has already turned in some very impressive performances for San Jose.

With Martin Jones in net, the Sharks are starting the goalie who carried them through most of the season with only a few hiccups. That he used to play for the Kings should not be much of a factor, since any familiarity the Kings have with Jones will be matched by his knowledge of their skaters. Jonathan Quick is not exactly an unknown quantity for the Sharks, either. The Sharks know him well from many meetings.

The Sharks have Matt Nieto and Marc-Edouard Vlasic coming back from injury. The last time the Sharks appeared in the playoffs, also against the Kings, the collapse began with the loss of Vlasic to injury. The Sharks have added a couple of veteran defensemen since then, in Paul Martin and Roman Polak, but Vlasic’s importance cannot be understated. The Sharks played pretty well down the stretch without him but they will need all their best blue liners to go far in the playoffs.

The Sharks also have some added depth in the scoring department, in Joel Ward and Joonas Donskoi. Ward is a seasoned veteran of playoff games, and scored timely goals for Washington. Donskoi is going into his first NHL Playoffs, but he has some experience with championship games from his time in Finland. Both players were consistently helpful during the regular season, and as additions to a group that has been to the playoffs together many times, they could be difference makers for San Jose.

Melker Karlsson joined the team last season and showed that he could contribute in the scoring department. He has spent a lot of time this season on the fourth line, but DeBoer’s fourth line is very different from the fourth line that Todd McLellan would put together. It is reasonable to expect more offense and fewer penalties from the likes of Karlsson and Dainius Zubrus.

If there is an x-factor for the Sharks, I would say it is Joel Ward or James Reimer. Any of the rookies could surprise the Kings and all have to contribute to get the Sharks through the first round. But Ward and Reimer both have enough playoff experience to do some heavy lifting. Even if Reimer does not play, he provides an added sense of confidence and security that should permeate the team’s mental game.

On the Los Angeles side, defenseman Alec Martinez and forward Marian Gaborik have returned from late season injuries. The team has confidence in their readiness to play, as they recently reassigned forward Nic Down and defenseman Kevin Gravel to the AHL. Other changes to their roster over the last season include the addition of Milan Lucic, and the losses of Justin Williams and Jarret Stoll. The last two were historically problematic for the Sharks, if in very different ways. Lucic combines some of both of those, as a cagey and tough competitor.

The Kings also picked up some scoring depth in Vincent LeCavalier. LeCavalier is nothing if not streaky but he should not be ignored. He has a lot to prove after his dismal stay with the Philadelphia Flyers. Since he is supposed to retire after this season, he can be expected to give it his all.

For the Kings, I would not identify particular players as x-factors. Rather, their tendency to start slowly should be seen as the critical factor. If they let the Sharks get ahead of them, they might not catch them again. If the Sharks can avoid having key players injured early, the Kings might not need to spot them the lead. They might just take it fair and square.
