By Tony Renteria

OKLAHOMA CITY–The Sacramento Kings are starting to do the one thing they could not do all season, they are winning basketball games on the road, they went into Oklahoma City beating the home Thunder 116-104.

The Thunder played with out Kevin Durant who sat out with a sprained big toe on his right foot.   This opened up the way for De Marcus Cousins to get a seasoned high 19 rebounds to go along with his 33 points.

The Kings who have suffered with sub pat third quarter play took a small lead into the second half and extended that lead by setting the tone in the third quarter by out pacing with Thunder 22-16 to start the second half. They held on in the fourth quarter to get the road win.

The Thunder were led by Serge Ibaka who scored 25 points for the home team. Russell Westbrook scored 17 and played over 41 minutes trying to keep pace with an energetic Rajon Rondo who had 19 assists.

The Kings continue the Texas swing by heading to Dallas Tuesday night and the Thunder stay home Wednesday to host the Grizzlies.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Oakland will lose the Raiders

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

ALAMEDA–Monday the 4th of January 2016, was the dateline for teams to present plans to the NFL to move to Los Angeles. The San Diego Chargers, the St Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders, at least one(maybe two)will leave for Los Angeles, the second media market in the country that hasn’t had an NFL team for the past 20 years. By mid January, one or more teams have to be approved for the proposed move and three-quarters of owners have to vote to make it possible, if not(no decision by then)it could get tabled until next year.

The Rams proposed a stadium which could house two teams in Inglewood, LA area. Another plan would be for the Chargers and Raiders to share the facility at Carson. By far the Rams have the best option with $450 million in possible subsides, while the poorest would be the Raiders. The franchise relocation fee is $550 million dollars, and no team has received enough support from NFL owners to make the move. Committees are meeting during this first week of the year in New York.
The Chargers released this statement:
“We have tried for more than 14 years, through nine separate proposals and seven different mayors, to create a world-class stadium experience for fans in San Diego. Despite these efforts, there is still no certain, actionable solution to the stadium problem. We are sad to have reached this point.”The Rams statement:

“The Rams  informed the National Football League today that the Rams propose to relocate to the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The relocation would be effective for the 2016 NFL League Year.”

And the Oakland Raiders were the last to release a statement::

“In accordance with the relocation policies, the Oakland Raiders submitted a relocation package to the NFL. The matter is now in the hands of the NFL’s owners. An owners’ meeting is scheduled to take place in Houston, Texas on January 12 and 13, 2016.”

Are the San Francisco Giants willing to spend on Yoenis Cespedes?

The Giants signed two starting pitchers to strengthen their 2015 weak rotation, by signing free agents Jeff Samardzija for $90 million dollars and five years and then Johny Cueto for 6 years and $130 million dollars. The “first row” of free agents outfielders available as of today are: Yoenis Cespedes, Justin Upton and Alex Gordon. Cespedes would be the ideal fit for the Giants in a stadium where a good right handed power hitter can do very well, but Cespedes is looking for a long deal of four years at least and most teams are probably pondering the situation; as he would turn 31 years of age this 2016 season. Alex Gordon, with less power but a Gold Glove could be a good option also, and of course Justin Upton who could provide some power in the middle of the lineup. Cespedes probably is the best fit, and he would be back in the Bay Area, where he originally began his career with the Oakland Athletics. The Los Angeles Angels are very much in need of a power bat left fielder, but owner Arte Moreno said recently he is not going for the big free agents this year. However, he has said that before, and has also changed his mind. He has the money, so I would not be surprised if he signed a guy like Yoenis Cespedes.

Are the Warriors receiving enough national recognition?
If the Warriors played in New York, or Los Angeles, or even Chicago, we would be reading that this 2015-2016 is “the best NBA team ever, but they play in the Bay Area, Oakland, to be exact. If we determine the best team by winning record, the history books show that the best three teams ever where all Chicago Bulls;  1995-98,  72-10, 1996-1997,   69-13 and  1991-1992, 67-15, the Michael Jordan and company teams. The Warriors are 32-2, on a pace to become the best record ever, all they have to do is to win 41 of their next 48 games, then the numbers will show that they are the best on a regular season in the NBA history. Notice the Bulls (above) have the best two records ever on consecutive seasons, and that means that if the Warriors win the NBA title again, they will make some history also. Easy to forget here in Curryland, that the San Antonio Spurs have a 30-6 record.

Brazil looking for Vinganca
In Portuguese, the world Vinganca means “revenge” and this next World Cup of Soccer, the world’s greatest sporting event, will take place in Brazil, this year and Brazilians who were totally embarrassed during the last World Cup by Germany who defeated them 7- 1 are looking forward to playing this time in front of the greatest futbol audience in the world. Brazil has won five World Cups more than anybody and they are the only team to have qualified to every World Cup. When you are the host country, you automatically qualify, so that was sort of good news for the Brazilians this year.  Germany is #2 all time with four World Cup titles. Brazil is the fifth largest country(by territory)in the world, only Russia, Canada, United States of America and China are larger, but there is not bigger passion for one sport in the world but for Futbol in Brazil. Because the way they lost to Germany last time in the final game, where 95%of the Brazilian people were either listening on the radio or watching on television, the media in Brazil considers this 2016 World cup as their most important in their history.

Sun Devils hold Cardinal women to historic scoring low

TEMPE, Arizona – Arizona State merely wanted to put together a solid defensive game plan for Monday’s Pac-12 women’s basketball encounter with Stanford. And it worked.

The result was an effort of historic proportions – literally. The Sun Devils held the No. 11-ranked Cardinal to its lowest point total ever in a 49-31 victory before 1,708 at Wells Fargo Arena.

“This certainly wasn’t our night,” Cardinal Coach Tara VanDerveer said. “We just missed too many shots, and Arizona State did a lot of things defensively that made it difficult to come back. They played a great game.”

Women’s basketball became a varsity sport at Stanford in 1974-75 as part of the old AIAW. Based on team statistics kept since the 1978-79 season, the Cardinal’s previous scoring low was in a 72-32 loss to Missouri on Jan. 2, 1984 in the Dial Classic at Miami, Fla.

“We had a beautiful scouting report that allowed us to know their personnel inside and out. That allowed us to play the defense that we played,” ASU guard and Bay Area native Elisha Davis said. “You can have a system, but if you don’t have the chemistry and the awareness on defense, it’s not going to work.”

Davis admitted that getting the wins over Cal and Stanford mean a little more to her, saying, “I’m really good friends with some of the girls at Cal, so that makes it a little more personal. With Stanford, it’s more of a rivalry. I’m thankful for both wins. To open up conference with wins against teams of their caliber speaks a lot to how much we’ve grown as a program.

“It’s a beautiful win, but it also shows how much our hard work is starting to show.”

Arnecia Hawkins and Sophie Brunner each scored a game-high 12 points for ASU (11-3 overall, 2-0 Pac-12), while Davis canned three 3-pointers to finish with nine points. Brunner pulled down 10 of the Sun Devils’ 41 rebounds, and teammate Katie Hempen had five assists.

“Rebounding was a big focus this weekend, especially with Stanford,” Brunner said. “Whoever was going to hit first was going to get the rebound. We really took that to heart, and tonight, we were the ones that hit first.

“When we hit them first, they seemed to get tired, and I wasn’t expecting them to get tired that easily,” she continued. “They (Stanford) just seemed to get tired early in the game, which we took advantage of.”

Hawkins didn’t want to consider the decisive win as a statement game, saying, “We treat every game like it’s a statement game.”

Davis added, “We want to show that anyone can win on any given day. We don’t think about rankings. None of that matters on the court. What you do with the ball and how you interact with your teammates and having a collective team effort is what’s most important.”

Sun Devils Coach Charli Turner Thorne said, “I thought we had a tremendous effort and worked hard the entire game. We never let (Stanford) get comfortable in their offensive mode.

Arizona State, which defeated Stanford twice last season, defeated the Cardinal for only the 14th time in 71 meetings.

Two days after a 59-34 win at Arizona, Stanford (11-3 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) never led in the game against ASU. After the 17th-ranked Sun Devils opened the game with a 14-4 run, Stanford was held to single-digit scoring until Kaylee Johnson’s layup with 1:02 left in the first half closed their deficit to 26-11.

“I didn’t think we would hold Stanford the way we held them,” Turner Thorne said. “I couldn’t believe the halftime score. We’ve had some defensive battles over the years with scores in the low 50s. But I was confident that we could do a great job defensively.

“Our goal is to make teams work for what they get. We won’t give anyone anything easy, and when we do that for 40 minutes, I like our chances.”

The Cardinal shot 24 percent (5 of 21) from the field in the first half and didn’t fare much better after halftime, making 6 of 22 shots (27 percent) in the third and fourth quarters.

Arizona State didn’t shoot much better (31 percent), but made 17 field goals and made 9 of 11 at the free throw line.

Thorne said one of the things that worked in ASU’s favor was “time of possession.”

“That’s usually a football term, and it worked in our favor in both of these games” Turner Thorne said, laughing. “With our leads, I thought we did a very good job of getting offensive rebounds, kicking it out, and make them keep playing defense. I thought our team played very poised, very smart in the fourth quarter in both games.”

After ASU’s Kelsey Moos opened the second half with a 3-pointer, Erica McCall’s inside jumper and a layup by Lili Thompson helped Stanford pull to within 29-17. The Cardinal got no closer than 31-19 on a pair of Brittany McPhee free throws.

“Our team is good at adjusting, so we had faith that we could adjust and we can usually do that to our advantage,” Hawkins said.

Davis’s third 3-pointer gave the Sun Devils a 39-19 lead with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter. Arizona State would take its final 20-point lead with :56 left in the game on two Sabrina Haines free throws.

Thompson was the Cardinal’s top scorer with seven points. Thompson and Johnson each had four rebounds.

“It came down to motivation; the team with the made-up mind was going to win this game,” Turner Thorne said. “We always want to be as relentless as we can be, and tonight, I thought we were.”

Stanford returns home Friday to host Utah (7 p.m.), with Colorado visiting Maples Pavilion on Sunday (noon).

San Francisco 49ers podcast with David Zizmor: Tomsula doesn’t deserve most of the blame York does and he admits it

by David Zizmor

SANTA CLARA–Let’s keep in mind that every assistant coach in the NFL has dreams of being a head coach and former 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula was no exception as he was fired right after Sunday’s game. Also former 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was no exception he was also on the 49ers chopping block.

It was kind of apparent to everybody inside the 49ers organization that 49ers CEO Jed York was favorable towards Tomsula and he took advantage of that. Tomsula gets a tiny bit of blame for what went wrong in the 2015 season. Let’s be honest it’s hard to fault him that’s because every assistant coach wants the head coaches job.

So as far as what went wrong with the 49ers coaching this season you can point to Tomsula but as far as the blame is concerned York gets most of the blame, it’s not Tomsula’s job to figure out whose most qualified for the job. It’s the general manager Trent Baalke and the team CEO York.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal has a lots of stars on this team that’s bringing out the NBA scouts

by Morris Phillips

BERKELEY–This year’s Cal Golden Bears have put it together their a team now. You can sense it, the fans can sense it, the announcers can sense it. Whatever happened in Virginia that kind of put the lights on for Cal after losing there back east they took their first two games of the Pac 12 season. The Bears trailed for only six minutes in the two games they just won against Colorado and then Utah.

Defensively they were lights out the Bears just stopped both teams cold in their tracks. There were 30 NBA scouts in attendance for the game with Utah on Sunday. What you want to see is if your an NBA evaluator you want to see these guys go against top flight teams.

The issue is Cal can put out seven footers and Ivan Rabb at 6’11 and the wings are all 6’6 and 6’5 and their really committed to playing top flight defense. Still they have a lot of growth to do offensively but this is definitely a team on the rise.

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Cardinal seek to get back in win column after one point loss last Sunday

by Jerry Feitelberg

PALO ALTO–It was a very difficult loss for the Stanford Cardinal (8-5) losing by one point to the Colorado Buffaloes last Sunday at Maples Pavilion. They had an upset beating the Utah Utes to open Pac 12 play at Maples on Friday night and they were looking forward to taking on Colorado but lost to them by one. When you play these tight defensive games you never know what’s going to happen.

Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins has the team on the right track right now. They might not do that well overall in the Pac 12 but they might end up in the NIT again. It was a close game against Colorado and losing a game like that sometimes you fall short.

Stanford’s Rosco Allen has been very productive he’s either a center or a power forward and he’s done a good job for the Cardinal. His shooting has been good, his defense has been good and sometimes he gets off to a slow start. Most every game he’s solid he’s going to be good for 18-20 points a game.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Lami: York says blame rests squarely on his shoulders

by Joe Lami

photo credit: sfgate.com 49ers CEO Jed York at press conference announcing firing of head coach Jim Tomsula

SANTA CLARA–We have rarely seen 49ers CEO Jed York step up to the podium and address the media and he’s stepped back from speaking this season. He mentioned that and in effect he doesn’t want to be a distraction to this team so what he’s deciding to do is he’s taking a step back.

He mentioned that he would step back on social media, if you remember York a few years back before this terrible season the 49ers had we saw York talk a lot. Today was the first time we got to speak to York and he addressed the fans right off the bat by apologizing that this season was unacceptable.

York takes the blame and he’s trying to get this team back to a Super Bowl winning team. York also mentioned that he’s keeping general manager Trent Baalke on as team general manager. Which raises a very interesting question why would Baalke remain on? When you look at Baalke’s draft picks and how York used this that this would be an important picks.

The Warriors swat the Charlotte Hornets, 35th straight win at home.

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors defeated the Charlotte Hornets at the Oracle Arena Monday night by a score of 111-101. The game was marked by the return of forward Harrison Barnes, Steph Curry and Brandon Rush. Barnes missed sixteen since injuring his ankle in Phoenix on November 27th. Curry left Saturday night’s game as his left ankle was bothering him. Curry returned with ankle braces on both legs for the Charlotte game. Rush missed the Saturday game with an undisclosed illness.

The Warriors took an early 10-4 lead in the first period. Curry hit a three-pointer to get the lead for the Dubs. For Curry, it was the 105th straight game that he made a three-point shot that is second all-time in the NBA. The Hornets came back and had a one-point advantage with a 13-12 lead with a little over seven minutes left in the period. The Dubs went ahead 17-13 but Charlotte went on a 7-0 run to put them ahead 20-17. Golden State responded by tying the game at twenty. With 2:11 left. Harrison Barnes entered the game, and the Dubs went on a 15-4 run to give them an eight-point advantage after one period of play 32-24.

The Dubs and the Hornets each scored thirty points in the second period. The Dubs continued to lead by eight 62-54. One of the key plays in the period was a fantastic lob pass from Draymond Green that Andrew Bogut converted for a two-point play. Key players for Charlotte in the first half were Kemba Walker with fourteen points, Jeremy Lamb with twelve of the bench and Brian Roberts with nine. For Golden State, Klay Thompson had eighteen, Steph Curry fourteen, Mo Speights Nine and Harrison Barnes with six. Charlette shot 48.8% from the floor while the Warriors shot 58.1% and were nine for nineteen making threes.

In the third period, the Hornets rallied to cut the Dubs’ lead to one 66-65. Klay scored the next five points up the lead to 71-65. The Dubs continued a 12-0 run to go ahead 78-65. Steph and Brandon Rush each hit a three-point shot and Golden State now had a fifteen-point lead. The third period ended with Golden State ahead 95-77.

The Hornets made a run in the fourth period. They held the Dubs scoreless for over four minutes and closed the gap to nine, but coach Luke Walton put Draymond, Steph, and Bogut back in the game to seal the win. With 5:31 left, Draymond fed Steph, who converted and Draymond had his third straight triple-double. He became the first Warrior to accomplish this since Tom Gola did it in 1960. The Hornets were toast as the Dubs won their 32nd game of the year 111-101.

Game Notes- The Warriors improved to 32-2 for the season while Charlotte’s record dropped to 17-17. The Warriors were led by Steph and Klay. Each had 30 points. Draymond had 13 points, ten assists, and 15 rebounds. Mo Speights added 15. Brandon Rush had 10, and Harrison Barnes finished with 8. Charlotte scorers were Kemba Walker with 20, Jeremy Lin 13 and Jeremy Lamb 22.

The Warriors meet the LA Lakers at the Staples Center Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

Message to the Fans From York

By: Joe Lami

photo credit: buschleaguesports.com 49ers CEO Jed York

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—

49ers’ owner Jed York spoke with the media for the first time in over a year on Monday morning at Levi’s Stadium. Once again, it was to discuss the termination of a head coach, as the 49ers reported late Sunday night that Jim Tomsula won’t be continuing as the head coach.

York begun the conference by thanking and apologizing to the fans for going through the difficult times, “this season was difficult on multiple levels. We took a step back towards a goal of winning a super bowl.”. York also acknowledged the criticism that he’s faced from the fans, whether it be from social media or even the banners that were being flown over the stadium.

He went on to say that he understands his role as the owner of the 49ers and that he has taken a step backwards with communicating via social media and he shouldn’t be a distraction to the team.

The most important step moving forward will be choosing a new coach for the 49ers. York confirmed on Monday that General Manager Trent Balke will remain on and will be in charge of choosing the next head coach. This seems to be different because with the initial hiring of Tomsula, it appeared to be solely York’s decision. By taking this step back, he is getting out of the way and allowing football minds make the football decisions, a criticism that hit him hard this year.

York appeared to have also shown that Balke might be on his final string by indicating how important the upcoming draft is with the seventh overall selection San Francisco will have. With Balke’s previous draft record, one has to question with he’s up for such a high task, but York is giving him on final chance mentioning that he has taken us there before and he can do it again.

While York didn’t want to tip his hand too much on what San Francisco will be looking for, he mentioned the obvious in finding a leader and a general that can lead a team to winning a Super Bowl. When it was brought up that the 49ers seemed to have a coach with these qualities in Jim Harbaugh, York danced around that question. York also mentioned that the 49ers do have a short list on possible candidates they will contact and that the media is free to speculate.
