NFL podcast with Tony Renteria: Davis: $100 Million NFL infusion not enough for new Oakland Stadium then where to go Raiders?

by Tony Renteria

OAKLAND–The NFL really wanted the St. Louis Rams as their first choice to come back to Los Angeles and considering the Rams history in being in LA. Even though the San Diego Chargers have a history of being in LA. Also LA really wants the Raiders as well.

That’s a lot of AFL history right there between the Chargers and Raiders. The Raiders and Chargers have to come up with that $550 million location fee. Charger owner Dean Spanos can pull it off and Raider owner Mark Davis may not be able to.  Since Davis and the Raiders are the odd team out of LA Davis will consider his options if he would considering moving the Raiders to now unoccupied St.Louis, San Antonio or working with Oakland again and see if they can build a new stadium at the Coliseum footprint.

The Rams will not wait around in St.Louis they’re actually moving now. The Rams will open their 2016 season in the LA Coliseum and they want their new stadium to be at Hollywood Park and it should be ready by 2019. For Rams owner Stan Kroenke who said that the move to LA is bittersweet but none the less the Rams will be kicking off in LA for their pre season game in August.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: This Cal-Stanford match up may not award the Ax but expect both teams to chop it on Thursday night on the Farm

by Michael Duca

photo credit: calbears.com Cal Bears promo Cal @ Stanford for this Thursday night

BERKELEY–Well it depends on if Cal head coach Cunzo Martin blindfolds his players because they think their going on the road in this field trip from the Cal campus to Stanford’s Farm and if they didn’t think this way they’d just collapse.

This is one of those Pac 12 seasons the teams are good and they beat each other all season long you might end up with a team that’s 10-6 in the conference and there might be a team that goes 8-8 and wins the conference tournament. The wind up with very few representatives in the NCAA.

March Madness it’s unfortunate because there’s a lot of games that could be won at home and not on the road Cal seems to be several of them. For this Thursday night’s game at Stanford the Cardinal have some weapons like Marcus Allen, Michael Humphrey, and Rosco Allen.

Rosco Allen seems to enjoy playing against Cal he’s an interesting player because he can score in the paint and he could score outside. Rosco has a pretty decent mid range shot.

Michael Duca takes you through the Cal Bears game at Stanford Thursday night at Maples Pavilion listen below for the podcast. Game night coverage with Morris Phillips on Cal Bears and Daniel Dullum on Stanford Cardinal read all about it right here at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

Sharks’ Stalock strong against Jets

Photo credit: (Trevor Hagan/The Canadian Press via AP)

By Pearl Allison Lo

~ San Jose and goalie Alex Stalock held the Winnipeg Jets to one goal in a 4-1 win Tuesday.

The Jets have now lost three straight. Conversely, the Sharks have won three straight.

Stalock’s last appearance was against Winnipeg as well, where he came in to replace Martin Jones and stopped all six shots he faced. This time, Stalock turned aside 21 shots, to earn his first win since November 22.

There was plenty of animosity between the teams. Both the first and second period saw fights and the third included roughing and a game misconduct.

Scoring times were similar in the end periods.

San Jose’s Chris Tierney scored shorthand at 15:18. Winnipeg followed 23 seconds later still on the power play. Nikolaj Ehlers scored, aided by Drew Stafford.

With 47 seconds left in the period, Joe Thornton made it 2-0 off teammate Tomas Hertl’s rebound.

The Sharks got a five minute man advantage in the third when Tyler Myers was called for cross checking. Tommy Wingels had checked Myers into the boards and Myers replied by shoving Wingels in the head at 12:55.

With 5:48 left, most of the Jets thought they had tied the game, Blake Wheeler scoring after tripping Stalock, as Stalock’s stick went flying in the air. However, the goal was taken back and San Jose got a two man advantage.

It was a lackluster power play until Coach Peter DeBoer gave the Sharks a talking to. It resulted in the typical Joe Pavelski power play at 15:59. Logan Couture and Brent Burns helped. With the assist, Burns now has a career high eight game point streak. It is also the longest run by a San Jose defenseman, according to @EliasSports.

After missing a breakaway earlier, the Sharks’ Joel Ward’s empty netter with 54 seconds left, made the game the same score as the teams’ last matchup. That game also featured a shorthand goal and unguarded net.

Game notes: Injury-wise, Wingels and Winnipeg’s Mathieu Perreault returned, but the Jets’ Mark Scheifele remained out. San Jose was outhit again 29-10. The Sharks outblocked Winnipeg 21-10. San Jose now hopes to use momentum from their last home win and perfect road trip. They begin a three game homestand, starting Thursday at 7:30pm with former Coach Todd McLellan’s return to SAP Center for the first time with his Edmonton Oilers. The Sharks’ Raffi Torres will also be eligible to return from his 41-game lockout.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Former New York Giant Monte Irwin dead at 96

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez
photo credit: vintagecardtraders.org New York Giants hero Monte Irwin in 1953
A truly historical and legendary figure, Monte Irwin died in Houston, Monday night at age of 96 of natural causes. He was sought after to be the first African-American to break the color barrier, in the 1940’s, before Jackie Robinson. Negro League owners recommended to Branch Rickey, President and General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers Irwin to be the first African-American to play in the big leagues.
A great long life for Irwin who was a mentor to Willie Mays, and who was in the dugout at Polo Grounds when Bobby Thompson hit the “Shot Heard ‘Round The World”In American baseball, the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” (usually spelled with an apostrophe) denotes the game-winning walk-off home run by New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thomson off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds to win the National League pennant at 3:58 p.m. EST on October 3, 1951. As a result of the “shot”, the Giants won the game 5-4, defeating their traditional rivals in their pennant playoff series 2 games to 1. This moment was named the greatest in New York or San Francisco Giants history and one of the most famous in the history of the game.
“I don’t have any regrets,” Irvin said in 2010. “I couldn’t aspire to becoming a Major Leaguer because the door was closed. Jackie Robinson is the real hero and the real pioneer. I was just so happy he was successful, and it made it much easier for all of us who came after him.”
Willie Mays, 84 years old,  issued a statement in reaction to the news of Irvin’s death that read, “Today is a sad, sad day for me. I lost someone I cared about and admired very, very much; someone who was like a second father to me. Monte was a kind of guy that you had to be around to get to know. But once you became friends, he always had your back. You had a friend for life. Monte Irvin was a great left fielder. Monte Irvin was a great man. I will miss him. There are no words for how I feel today. I could say so much more about Monte, but this is not so easy to do right now.” Monte Irwin played a very big part in the integration of the game with African-Americans who were coming into the majors in the 1950’s. Irwin the fourth American-American player to make it to the majors, after Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby(first African-American player in the American League)and Hank Thompson.
Born on  February 25, 1919 in Hateburg, Alabama.Monte Irwin played with the New York Giants from 1949 to 1955, a first-baseman and left-fielder, Irwin had his best year in 1951, when he finished with a .312 batting average, 24 home runs and 121 runs batted in. I had the privilege of meeting him and shaking his hand on the field prior to a postseason game which he used to frequent often.
Monte Irwin, member of the Hall of Fame, was a man of class and dignity. May he rest in Peace.

NHL podcast with Joe Lami: Another Hockey Night in Canada this time in sub 20 Winnipeg for Sharks

by Joe Lami

photo credit: flickr.com outdoor hockey in downtown Winnipeg where temps are in the minus 20s

The San Jose Sharks are coming off back to back wins against Toronto and Calgary. They play in Winnipeg tonight and  it’s cold as hell in Winnipeg it’s minus 20 for tonight’s game at the MTS Center. It should be an interesting game you look at the Sharks and how they played that game against Toronto.

That 7-0 win at SAP Center over the Leafs helps out their confidence. The Leafs were coming off their third game in four days and they already played the Kings and the Ducks in LA and Anaheim then they came into San Jose on Saturday and get blown out by the Sharks.

Then on Monday night the Sharks in Calgary had almost gave up the game in the second period where they had a horrible penalty kill and then they Sharks were able to retake the game in the third period. That’s what really was the most impressive from the game last night.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Sharks enjoying the lamp finding the back of the net more often

Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh

photo credit: bingimages.com San Jose Sharks Joonas Donskoi who scored one of the seven goals against Toronto last Saturday

On the podcast: Wins have been in such supply and the San Jose Sharks seemed to be coming through now. With a win over Toronto at SAP Center on Saturday 7-0 and the one goal win over the Calgary Flames on Monday night at the Sadddledome 5-4.

The Sharks got goal scoring help in these last two games from players like Joel Ward, Joonas Donskoi, Melker Karlsson, Joe Pavelski and Tomas Hertl contributed with two goals in Saturday’s game. They all seemed to be back in good form.

Unfortunately Sharks Tommy Wingels got into a collision with Donskoi and will be sidelined and hopefully the Sharks are looking for his full recovery. The Sharks seemed to be firing on all cylinders in the game against Calgary Monday night which was quite different from the game with Toronto.

Toronto was making some glaring errors and it was a good sign the Sharks can take advantage of those errors. Calgary was really ready for San Jose and the Flames pushed back and their known as the come back kids for a good reason.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Charlie O: Kings barely hold on for Kobe’s last visit to Sacramento

by Charlie O Mallonee

photo credit: capitalradio.org the Lakers Kobe Bryant puts the defense on the Sac Kings Rudy Gay in Thu Jan 7th’s game at Sleep Train Arena

SACRAMENTO–Kings fans at Sleep Train Arena who got caught up in all the hoopla with the return of LA Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Kobe promised to travel to Sacramento but no one was sure he was going to be able to play. Well Kobe got here on game day and said “I’m playing.”

Not only did he play he played for almost 31 minutes and scored 28 points he went 10-18 from the field he did well on the charity stripe and this guy had a great game. The Kings got out to a lead matter of fact their biggest lead the Lakers had in this game was two points.

The Kings got out into the third quarter and had a 27 point lead so you say, fall in, all done, all through, right? Salute Kobe and say goodbye, hugs and kisses get out of town. Well no, the Kings go through this tremendous let down they don’t shoot particularly well, they’re defense such as it is falls completely apart and they let the Lakers back into this game to the point where the game was in question.

At the end of the game the final comes out 118-115 Kings now were talking about the Lakers the 8-29 Lakers arguably if not the worst the second worst team in the NBA. Just behind the Philadelphia 76ers and the King just barely held onto win the game.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News and Commentary: Raiders will stay in Oakland NFL expected to come up with funds towards new Oakland stadium

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo credit: Los Angeles Times artist rendition of new Los Angeles Stadium

OAKLAND–According to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell the likelihood of the Oakland Raiders staying in Oakland is all but assured. The Raiders who were considering moving to Los Angeles due to poor conditions and no funds to build a new stadium will get financial help from the NFL according to Goodell.

The San Francisco 49ers who are hosting the NFL Super Bowl on February 7th received $200 million contribution for their new stadium Levis Stadium in Santa Clara. The Raiders quite possibly might use the 49ers Stadium during construction of their new Stadium if they cross that bridge (literally too).

The Raiders hopes to move to LA might have been squashed due to a proposal for an new Ingelwood Stadium (the former city of the Los Angeles Lakers) that would be built to house the San Diego Chargers and the St.Louis Rams. The price tag to build the shared facility comes to $1.86 billion. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made the proposal and the vote on Tuesday need two quarters of the majority to approve any Raiders move. With Goodell coming out to announce the league would financially support the Raiders new stadium in Oakland it’s very unlikely now that the Raiders would move to Los Angeles.

Sharks outlast Flames

(Photo: Sergei Belski, USA TODAY Sports)

By Pearl Allison Lo

~ In the race to the regulation finish line, San Jose worked their way past a quick Calgary Flames comeback, in a 5-4 win Monday.

The two point lead, in a tight Pacific division battle, seemed destined, as the Sharks leapfrogged over the Flames to fourth place, keeping pace with the third-place Vancouver Canucks.

San Jose had a two goal lead three times in the game.

All of the three goals in the first were pretty evenly spaced apart.

The Sharks started where they left off, outscoring their opponent 9-0 in the last two games before they retaliated.

Joe Thornton got the takeaway and the goal as he exchanged passes with Joe Pavelski in between. He scored far side at 5:07.

San Jose would have had a power play but instead, Joonas Donskoi made it 2-0 when Chris Tierney passed the puck cross ice to Brendon Dillon at the blue line. At 9:27, Donskoi then tipped in Dillon’s shot.

Things intensified before Calgary’s goal. Two of Mikael Backlund’s attempts were saved and the Flames had a 2-on-1 shot blocked. Right after the latter, on the other end, the Flames scored. There was a rebound off Johnny Gaudreau’s shot. Micheal Ferland got the puck and Sean Monahan put it through the net at 13:45, after the Sharks were looking around.

San Jose reasserted their two goal lead, when Logan Couture began the second with his first goal of the season at 1:53.

Things remained in the Sharks’ favor until the second half of a double minor to Mike Brown, after he drew blood with a high stick.

Brent Burns was called for tripping, setting up a Calgary 5-on-3.

Within fifteen seconds, the Flames tied the game with back-to-back goals on back-to-back shots.

Dennis Wideman was aided by Gaudreau and Mark Giordano at 11:12. Giordano now has a five game point streak.

Sam Bennett was helped by Backlund and TJ Brodie.

In the third, San Jose’s Justin Braun got hit twice, the second time in the visor when he was already down, and had to leave the game. Couture said after the game, ““It’s scary anytime you see that much blood coming out that quick.”

The Sharks managed not to lose steam and went back up with a power play goal at 5:12. Burns scored just over 30 seconds in, assisted by Patrick Marleau and Thornton. Burns now has a seven game point streak. Marleau played in his 500th straight game.

Joel Ward then scored the game winner, as his pass turned into a goal. The assist went to Burns. Ward also had the game winner in the first of the season matchup between the teams.

Braun came back into the game.

Dillon was called for a penalty at 15:42 and Calgary pulled goalie Karri Ramo. It paid off, as the Flames pulled to within one. Ferland was aided by Backland and Dougie Hamilton.

Game notes: San Jose ended up outshot 35-18, outhit 22-9 and lost faceoffs by a 44-29 margin. The Sharks’ Tommy Wingels, who had a collision with Donskoi, left and came back during the first and then remained out. He is questionable with an upper body injury, for the 5pm matchup against the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday.

Steph’s 31 points leads Warriors over Heat

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon

OAKLAND — Stephen Curry scored 31 points to lead the  Golden State Warriors to their 36th consecutive home win at Oracle Arena with a 111-103 over the visiting Miami Heat on Monday night.

Draymond Green dropped 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Klay Thompson added 17 points for a Warriors team who improved to an NBA-best (36-2) on the season.

Golden State overcame a cold shooting night by Curry from 3-point range, who missed seven of his first nine 3-point but got plenty of help as the Warriors tied the Philadelphia 76ers (1966-67) for the fourth longest regular-season home win streak in NBA history. Chicago holds the record of 44 set in 1996-97.

Dwyane Wade scored 20 points, while Chris Bosh and Gerald Green each scored 15 points for Miami (22-16), who entered Oakland winners of eight of their past 11 games at Oracle Arena.

Luol Deng finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Miami.

Andrew Bogut scored eight points to go along with nine rebounds for a Warriors team, that has won seven of their last eight games.

Golden State travels to Denver Wednesday to take on the Nuggets, while Miami heads to Los Angeles to take on the Clippers on Wednesday.
