San Jose, CA – The San Jose Sharks host the Winnipeg Jets for another regular season, following a 5-3 to Detroit here in the SAP Center on Tuesday. Alexander Barabanov recorded his 100th career goal, but it wasn’t enough to stop a third period rally from the Red Wings.

Earlier today, San Jose’s Tomas Hertl was named an NHL All Star to represent the Sharks and as for the Jets, Winnipeg remained undefeated to start 2024 and San Jose seems like a likely place to keep that fire burning as the Jets edged the Sharks at SAP Center 2-1.

It was a quiet first period for both teams, with the highlight being Mackenzie Blackwood who got 11 saves and held his composure when the heat came. Winnipeg and San Jose went hit for hit with an evenly physical period, but it was a clean period with no penalties. 0-0 at the first intermission and energy high throughtout the SAP Center.

The silence was broken in the second period and it came seconds after the Jets killed a hooking penalty. Barabanov scored off a wrist shot, assisted by William Eklund and Ty Emberson and the Sharks were up 1-0 and Barabanov recorded his 100th goal with the Sharks, a game after he scored his 100th career goal.

A minute later the Jets answered back. Neal Pionk shot the puck towards a screened Blackwood and the puck was deflected by Morgan Barron in the net, 1-1. As the period ended, the score was tied and momentum could sway either way.

The third period was a battle, but this battle had an early game changing moment. San Jose’s Filip Zadina got a hooking penalty and that penalty broke the tie for Winnipeg. Gabriel Vilardi tipped in a pass from Nikolaj Ehlers past Blackwood and two minutes into the final period, the Jets were up 2-1. The Sharks gained some opportunities along the way, but to no success as the Jets skated off the ice with a 2-1 victory.

The Sharks now start off 2024 0-2 and now have fallen even further behind in the standings as this season progresses with another loss. Coach Quinn has a lot on his plate as the season now prepares for the trade deadline and the next game for the Sharks is Sat January 6th against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the SAP Center a 4:00pm PT face off.

San Jose, CA – After three straight games that went to overtime, the latest being a shootout loss in Vegas, the San Jose Sharks face off against the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets come in on a four game winning streak which the boys in teal ended 2-1.

The first period was a hot start for the Sharks as they put up 11 shots in the first five minutes. Filip Zadina went to the floor and hobbled off the ice and wasn’t seen for the rest of the period. The first goal of the game was the first goal of the season for Justin Bailey and it came from the point and was assisted by Mike Hoffman and Jan Rutta, 1-0 Sharks. Brendan Dillion tied it up with a blue line wrist shot, 1-1.

A very quiet second period for both teams, but that’s thanks to a great performance from both goalies. Mackenzie Blackwood was on full display and blocked 13 shots in the second period. Two penalties, but both were killed off and the period closed with a 1-1 score.

In the final period the teams played a conservative game, but finally after 15 minutes into the period the stalemate was ended when a power play goal by William Eklund off a slapshot to make it 2-1 Sharks. The goal was assisted by Mikael Granlund and Anthony Duclair. The Jets emptied the net between 1 or 2 minutes left to try to get a tying goal, but the final buzzer hit and the Sharks won 2-1.

After this win the Sharks head to Arizona to face the Coyotes on Fri Dec 15th and hopefully can keep the fire burning that they ignited on the road trip before this game and it seems like that fire is still as hot as it can be with this victory over Winnipeg.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Troy Ewers: Sharks coming off 3-3 road trip face Oilers tonight at SAP Center

The Vegas Golden Knights right winger Jonathan Marchessault (81) skates against the San Jose Sharks defenseman Henry Thrun (3) at T Mobile Center in Las Vegas on Sun Dec 10, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the San Jose Sharks podcast with Troy:

#1 The last game on the road trip for the San Jose Sharks (8-17-3) they took an shootout loss to the Vegas Golden Knights (19-5-5) 6-5 at the T Mobile Center. The Knights Jonathan Marchessault scored twice in regulation and got the winning shoot out goal on Sunday night.

#2 The Sharks are fully aware what a Marchessault can do and he was the difference in this game where the Sharks hung with the Knights in a close game 6-5.

#3 The Sharks were 3-3 on this past road trip and defeated some of the leagues tougher teams on this trip with wins over the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, and the Detroit Red Wings.

#4 Troy wanted to ask you about some of the Sharks scorers on Sunday Mike Hoffman with two goals, Calen Addison and Mario Ferraro both with a goal a piece. They made it close against the Knights which is a huge improvement after how they struggled earlier this season.

#5 The Sharks are taking on the Winnipeg Jets tonight, the Jets are on a run they’ve won four straight games and the Jets (16-8-2) in their last game defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 in Anaheim. The Jets are no pushovers but the Sharks have played much improved hockey how do you see this match up tonight at SAP Center.

Penguins ended the Aves streak in shutout 4-0. Tristin Jarri goaltender for the Pens stopped 31 shots.

#4 More bad news for the Edmonton Oilers they have lost their star forward Connor McDavid for one to two weeks due to a upper body injury. McDavid has two goals six assists. McDavid got hurt last Saturday against the Winnipeg Jets in 3-2 overtime loss.

#5 The New Jersey Devils Jake Hughes has been exceeding expectations and is considered one of the best NHL players this season. Last Saturday Hughes had four assists becoming the first player with at least 14 points in the first five games of the season since the Pittsburgh Penguins Mario Lemieux did it with 17 points in the 1992-93 season.

Karlsson reaches 100, Sharks lose to Jets 6-2

San Jose Sharks’ Erik Karlsson (65) celebrates after his goal against the Winnipeg Jets with Jacob Peterson (24) and Logan Couture (39) during third-period in Winnipeg on Mon Apr 10, 2023 (AP news photo)

by Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks fell to the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 Monday night in Manitoba, but the game will still go down in history. Erik Karlsson scored twice, eclipsing 100 points, the first 100 point season by a defenseman since Brian Leetch during the 1991-92 season.

When Karlsson’s point shot on the power play beat Connor Hellebuyck 3:42 into the 3rd period (as he has many other goalies this year) the Swede became the first European defenseman to pass the century mark. He has 25 goals and 75 assists, both career highs.

It goes without saying he’s the first Shark to have a 100 point season. His first goal also set a bit of Franchise history. Point 99 on a backdoor goal just 20 seconds into play was also the 2,000 franchise goal by a d-man. Logan Couture assisted for his 700th career point, all with San Jose, and Jacob Peterson had his seventh point in as many games.

While Karlsson has the 15th 100-point season by a defenseman, he’s the sixth defenseman to accomplish the feat. Bobby Orr and Paul Coffey combined to complete the feat 11 times while Al MacInnis, Dennis Potvin and Leetch accomplished the feat just once. All are hall of gamers, though MacInnis and Coffey did not win the Norris Trophy for best defenseman in at least one of their 100 point seasons.

The question will be whether Karlsson takes home his third Norris this year or if results like Monday’s push him down the line for a player like Adam Fox, Josh Morrissey or Charlie McAvoy (read: playoff bound and not 29th overall). Karlsson gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead but Pierre-Luc Dubois, Adam Lowry, Kyle Connor and Mason Appleton all scored to put San Jose down 4-1.

Karlsson scored again for the 100 milestone the aforementioned Morrissey scored his 16th of the year and Mark Schieffle scored his 44th on the power play. The Jets desperately needed the win to hold on to the last Wild Card spot with Calgary (90 points) and Nashville (88 points with games in hand) on their trail. Hellebuyck made 19 saves while the Jets fired 33 shots on James Reimer.

Two games remain on the Sharks schedule, one against playoff hopeful Calgary Wednesday night and the other against the lock Edmonton Oilers Thursday night. Should Karlsson score at a two-point-per-game clip he’d move into sole possession of the tenth best season by a defenseman, though Paul Coffey at nine (113 points) is out of reach. But perhaps a piece of hardware is in reach for EK65.
